    Good overview as always.
    You can just call the faction Media, the Greek word Atropatene merely stands for “of Atropates”, a Persian satrap during the Hellenistic era.

    Great videos as always, it seems you're getting better at explaining with each videos. The thing about what I like about the eastern faction is that they got good horses and a ridiculous economy that can only be beaten by Rome. Plus Antropaktan is one of the faction with a large pool of units in the east which makes it very fun. And they also got a ridiculous building that raise their 1st class pop and that means high armoured horse units, my favourite.

    Medes/Media/Median is probably the best term to use when describing the people, Atropatene/Atropatkan are more of geographical indicators. I think that Parthia represents the Parni/Dahae nomads that founded the Pahlavan/Parthian empire, while Parthava represents the region of Parthia that was later settled by the Parni after it revolted against Seleucid rule.

    Persian setting does not necessarily = desert ad setting sun . If anything Persia stands for the rising sun, or the daw. The birth of light , Zarathurstra , and the mountain are sacred to us, especially for the Medes who are the ancestors of the Kurds who are known as the people of the mountains. Iran is a very mountainous region with snowy peaks .

    • @rogerhill9559
      @rogerhill9559 Рік тому

      Yeah I think a lot of people in the West don't realize how diverse Iran/Persia's geography is and think it's just desert like Iraq. It has mountains, it has wetlands and sure it has deserts too.

    Thanks for a very enjoyable and comprehensive overview. I've been looking forward to you covering this faction as I'm currently having a blast playing a Media campaign.
    Your hype for their varied roster and especially the awesome cavalry is both warranted and contagious :)
    A few additional notes:
    The Shield-Bearers are awesome for sure, but not really for their bows. Not only do they have low ammo, but they are less accurate and their projectiles are much weaker than even bottom-tier archers (damage of 7+2 AP on normal Sparabara and 9+2 AP on the Elite variant, vs. 12+3 AP on the low tier archers.) In general, my experience is that the shield-bearers are amazing at forming a battle line and eating missile attacks, while using their otherwise unimpressive missile attacks to make sure the AI rushes at them.
    The problem that I have with the elite archers, on the other hand, is that both the heavy archers and the royal archers take 1st class population, while the levy-tier archers are of course 3rd class *and* they have size 200 (as opposed to the normal 175.) It's been hard for me to justify spending the population on archers (that will potentially do less damage because of that smaller size) when I could use those same nobles for cataphracts and such (and it's not like Media needs more tools to counter enemy skirmishers, which this kind of high-tier archers seems to be geared towards.)
    I haven't played too many factions yet, but I certainly agree with your difficulty rating. I think Media is very well-equipped to deal with all the factions that surround it, with great tools against heavy cavalry, horse archers and pikemen. Especially since there's also AOR and mercenary elephants all over the place as soon as you move a little east or a little west.
    Edit: one last thing -- I've found that the one thing possibly missing from the roster is shock infantry for sieges; as much as the axemen and the elite infantry are nice, they're not amazing. I've been able to cover this by subjugating some of the Galatians and levying their awesome swords using the "Levy from Satrapy" mechanic. Takes a long time, but not many are needed for the job of taking the walls, and making satrapies feels very on theme with the Achaemenid legacy :)

    • @Immersaholic
      @Immersaholic  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you mate and thanks for such a comprehensive comment! I see your point about the shield bearers but I think they are very useful because they can force the ai to push your line because they would refuse to sit and take fire. Then you get to manipulate the battle heavily.
      I almost agree with your elite archer statement although it’s worth considering they have much higher damage on their projectiles and high armor so even though their population class is precious they are more likely to survive taking skirmished fire themselves. They are also versatile with that massive attack stat that can swing a desperate battle your way if your melee units are all engaged

    • @Konrad_IV
      @Konrad_IV Рік тому

      You can also use the better vassals and satrapy levies mod, which allows to levy more/better units of your satrapies.

    Media gets Artillery Penetrese for the navy which is basically all you ever really need, it's not as flashy as the Greek / Carthage / Roman but it's basically as effective.
    Ammunition bonus don't help Sparabara (nor does any of the perks that benefit archers, as it doesn't count as archers.), you can stack as much as you want and they don't work. Though the Elite Sparabara is quite useful until maybe the very end game. (same for the Satrap guard, which is a unit that looks a lot better in theory than practice. )
    Their pikemen are good against Armenia / Georgia which isn't super range heavy but has a lot of annoying hard ass infantry like those heavy Spa etc, against almost everything else you probably shouldn't use them, they'll lose to any other pikeman badly, Parthia is kind of hard to say sometimes it's very useful but it's also pretty risky because sometimes they have a lot of range as well. it's probably better to just stick with elite Sparabara which can deal well either way.
    Oddly the archer spearmen levy count as archer, but the satrap guard doesn't, their normal archer and levy archer spearmen is also slightly larger in unit size than normal
    Heavy archer and Royal archer is the same unit (upgrade via imperial reform) both unit need T1 pop so you can't really spam them that easily (it's also hard to get enough of a melee line for this faction to really go super heavy foot archer. )

  • @matthiasdarrington3271

    Been waiting for this overview for a while now. I wholeheartedly agree that it is an easy campaign. I'd probably recommend it to someone new to DEI, just because population isn't really an issue with this faction.
    I'm currently playing my first Median campaign and I'm loving it! I started off with a cav-heavy army with the Sparabaras as my main battle line to draw the enemy into a frontal assault while my horse archers and medium cav destroyed their cavalry, then their archers, and finished them off with rear charges. Like your suggestion, I started with killing off Armenia, and then once the Seleukid satrapies rebelled I actually turned west and destroyed the Seleukids while they were facing multiple enemies. It quickly secured my eastern border and allowed me to focus everything on the Greeks. I found my army composition excellent at dealing with the pikes and their cavalry didn't stank a chance against mine. Best of all, since almost all of my forces were from the paigan class I could easily replenish any losses. Once they were dealt with, I added Syrian Elephants to my two main armies and then steamrolled the Parsa, the Parthia s, and the Baktrians in turn. A line of Elite Sparabaras anchored by elephants on each flank was a nearly inpenetrable wall that easily held until my cavalry could come in for the kill. I'm now finishing off my former allies Cappadocia to secure the last of the lands of the old Persian Empire for Shahanshah Ariistun the Great!

    • @Immersaholic
      @Immersaholic  3 роки тому +1

      Sounds like a awesome campaign mate! I'm curious though, how did you handle the pikes themselves in melee? Even elite spearmen should get wrecked by mid-tier pikes because how powerful the pike itself is. Or did you just not engage them frontally?

    • @matthewhubbard1200
      @matthewhubbard1200 3 роки тому

      @@Immersaholic I really didn't engage frontally. My two main armies were the general on the heavier, jav cavalry, a line of 7 Elite Sparabaras for the heavier armor, 6 reformed Median archer cav, 4 heavy cav, and two Merc Syrian Elephants in my two main armies or 2 early cataphracts to anchor the flanks. My archer cav and heavy cav draw out the enemy cav and eliminate them, followed by skirmishers. Usually by that time their pikes were engaged with my Sparas but only for a minute or two before elephants/cataphracts pinch in from the sides and my heavy cav and general from behind. Basically a version of this battle plan every time.

      @@matthewhubbard1200 Nice job man sounds like you have a excellent setup. I'm struggling against Bactria in my Parthian campaign because Parthia doesn't really have decent melee infantry. I'm having to rely on AOR units which I can only get for one army.
      So I'm mostly having to do all cav armies and just bait them around the map skirmishing them to death until I can rear charge them when their morale is low enough. My next Parthian vid will show this especially.

      It is possible for the Seleucids to avoid the rebellion by having their satrapies love them so much. Its very unlikely for the ai to get this done but it is possible. Sure, those late game units are nice, but turn 200? Eugh!
    No thanks.

      It is a little rough that it’s so late, although it depends on what kind of player you are. I usually play campaigns to turn 300+ because I love slow burns

      @@Immersaholic I feel like turn 200 is just... too late- at turn 100~ I've already conquered all my surrounding provinces in the east, and the steppes, bosphorous and caucasus as Baktria, and I have all my units unlocked.
      By turn 200, I'll have conquered all the middle east and anatolia and parts of greece, the campaign would already be won at that point, there's only really a few factions left that pose any threat right now (selucids, rome and maybe egypt/carthage, though I doubt it.)
      The campaign is basically over by the time you unlock those units for Artokpatkan :C

    • @Immersaholic
      @Immersaholic  3 роки тому

      @@WelcomeToDERPLAND Yeah I see your point but it just comes down to how you play. For example my Parthian campaign is at turn 125 and I've barely survived and only have 2 full provinces under my control. Although its a much harder campaign, I still play fairly slow and immersively.
      It would be nice to be lower than 200 turns for the reforms though, maybe 120 or so at most.

      @kam2150 3 роки тому +3

      @@WelcomeToDERPLAND The reason why we made it that late is because these units are from very end of DeI campaign timeframe, which is II AD or even touch it a bit III AD. They are supposed to be reward for players who sticks long enough, otherwise they would be anachronistic if they would happen earlier.
