    I appreciate how ride-or-die Fenix is. Literally. He literally dies, comes back, tells you you're branded as traitors and then immediately goes 'Hell yeah I'm on your side, lets kick some Protoss ass!'
    As for Aldaris, I don't think he's right - as a Judicator, he serves as both a figure of law *and* faith, which gives him such an absolute way of thinking. To him, maintaining order within Protoss society is paramount, so the extent he goes to to persecute Tassadar makes a certain kind of sense to him, even as Aiur burns under the Zerg; the Zerg represent a physical threat, which is the duty of the Templar, but Tassadar represents a 'threat' to Protoss Society, which is Aldaris' greater concern. Even his 'civil war' is considered acceptable to him despite such a thing being what they condemn the Dark Templar for, since to him it's not a war between Protoss but a fight against an outside force that will corrupt and destroy Aiur, with even its greatest champion having already been corrupted by it.
    What's interesting though is that I wouldn't say Aldaris is a bad, er, Protoss - he's just so steeped in the rigid nature of the Protoss Empire that he can't see past it. It's telling in the final mission he actually apologizes and wishes Tassadar luck, and in Brood War he's a much kinder person, showing respect to the Dark Templar for helping the Aiur Refugees and making no comments about Raynor. It's only Kerrigan that makes him an antagonist there, and the refusal of others to see her for what she is is what pushes him back into his rigid nature, starting his coup to maintain Protoss Order and fight back against an outside influence. It's just, you know, he's actually right in Brood War because, well, Kerrigan *is* an outside force manipulating and corrupting the Protoss.
    So all in all, I like Aldaris a lot, he's a lot more complex and interesting than the typical 'political' character. He's wrong in the first campaign, but right in the second one, and you get a good sense that were the Protoss Empire not so rigid and uncompromising in its beliefs he would have been a better, er, man.

    Aldaris makes a lot of "correct" decisions based on what he knows. From his perspective, there is wasn't much else he could have done. There are a few things you can call him out on; believing that he has the upper hand on the Zerg when he has only barely scratched the surface of their forces, not listening to Tassadar when he tries to explain how DT energy works, but really, from his PoV, basically what happens in SC1 is his lead general Tassadar allows his entire planet to be overrun by locusts because he felt bad about killing the rats that the locusts were eating, and when they finally find him to make him answer for his failure, they find how that he has befriended the rats, and also a cult of Satanists. A well written character is not one who always does the right thing, but one who makes decisions that make sense at the time based on their motivation and personality.
    Of course, then there's Brood War, where Aldaris actually IS correct about not trusting Kerrigan, who successfully fools the entire Protoss faction, including Artanis and Zeratul, into doing her bidding. This is why Tassadar is an S-tier character; ain't no way my man would have fallen for that shit. Would have steered the Gantrithor right up her ass.

    • @benedict6962

      Aldaris makes reasonably good judgements, but is really bad at investigation and argument. Unfortunately, only Tassadar and Raynor are any good at that last one.

    • @bachpham6862
      @bachpham6862 2 роки тому +19

      For BW, to defend Artanis and Zeratul, they kind of don't have an alternative choice in the matter: it was either to cooperate or die one by one. Moreover, Raszagal was a respected member of the DTs, and having Aldaris, a member of the conclave, killing the matriarch would have meant there be no chances of reconciliation between the 2 factions. Also, even if Aldaris was right about Kerrigan, his action to raise an army to kill Raszagal for me also seems to be fueled by his prejudice against DTs (is running the plan through your allies first seems too hard? They could have put her in temporary stasis if he truly makes his case).
      Overall, I think Aldaris was a complex leader. His distrusts and adherence to Conclave helped him make a lot of correct decisions, but at the same time, those same things were also his downfall as it poisoned the Protoss alliance and exposed their weaknesses to Kerrigan.

      Considering Aldaris' information is essentially, "Zerga re devouring the planet and Tassadar went and got allies to help." Choosing to put all your resources into stopping Tassadar from helping because he thinks the help he brought smells is very much bad judegment. Between "literally devouring the planet" and "Getting help from people I don't like", he chose the latter.

    I always appreciated how the Protoss in SC1 are so technologically advanced, while still maintaining a rigid, old-fashioned social hierarchy. Aldaris is wrong in the way that the Protoss and the Conclave as a whole are wrong. He disregards Terran lives, he hates the Nerazim and he will not entertain the idea that they can't win the war alone. Aldaris decided that was the appropriate time to send the entire fleet to the opposite end of the galaxy to arrest one heretic. He's directly responsible for a large fraction of that '70% fatality rate', and might be responsible for the fall of Aiur.
    Anyway, Tassadar is too darn honorable to resist arrest so now Fenix and Raynor gotta do a jailbreak adventure. Fortunately, Raynor is down for breaking somebody out of prison.

    Okay, as much as I like Tassadar, what the hell is this fighting to resist arrest and then turning himself in to end the fighting that started over him in the first place? You can't jerk around your followers like that. They're willing to join you in exile and fight the conclave all in your name and on your orders and then you just bail on them halfway through the battle? If people are willing to fight for you and you have them do so you've got a resposibility to make sure they weren't fighting for nothing.

    • @wereoctopus
      @wereoctopus 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah it's a baffling choice, seemingly only there to get two PvP missions instead of one.
      My headcanon is that Tassadar has to resist *at first*, create enough chaos that the Conclave can't just capture/kill the DTs as soon as they make planetfall. Perhaps his surrender comes once he believes the Conclave's local infrastructure is too damaged to mount an effective search.
      I say headcanon, since there's no dialogue hinting that's his goal, nor any objective like "destroy all Observers and Robo Bays".

    • @TheHappy115
      @TheHappy115 2 роки тому +10

      While I agree doesn't make much sense, I just like to believe that he finds that after a while, the civil war is both pointless and weakening both sides when the true threat is the Zerg. So, he figures that turning himself in will instead distract the Conclave and they'll wasting their time trying to go through a whole trial process. During this time, Fenix and Zeratul can then focus their efforts on the Zerg and attempt to eliminate them while said Conclave is distract doing what they do. As much as they want to take out the Dark Templar, Aldaris really seems to want to take out Tassadar more than the Dark Templar.

    Just to add my two cents to the "was Aldaris right?" debate... Tassadar is a general who has disobeyed multiple direct orders from the civilian leadership of Aiur, and his actions ultimately contribute to the marginalisation of the Protoss civilian government in favour of military leadership (even when Artanis proclaims the end of the age of castes, he phrases it as "everyone is a Templar now," which I think is... unsettling?). The fact that the narrative proves Tassadar right and presents all of this as a good thing... I think, could be compared interestingly to the way a particular strand of American cinema often portrays conflicts between military leadership (decisive, realistic, practical) and civilian leadership (bureaucratic, short-sighted, naïve). Of course, there is also a question to be asked there about whether the Judicator caste are better characterised as "religious" than "civilian"...

    • @tacticaldroid133
      @tacticaldroid133 2 роки тому +4

      The Conclave seems to be a sort of kritarchy when it comes to structure. Think of the Athenian boule. Now, the Protoss religion seems to be a richly prescriptive one, meaning that it can effectively act as a stand alone legal doctrine, much like Abrahamic religions are very detailed in moral prescription and can have their teachings be very easily translated into laws. I think the closest government to the Conclave we've ever had in our world would be the aincient Israeli biblical judges before Saul.

    Based only on what I have seen in this playthrough, Aldaris makes decisions I regard as mostly understandable, but it is clear he's been given a role where he (and the Conclave as a whole, as he is the only one seen representative) are intended to be proven wrong as short-sighted and foolish. He's also hurt by the inexplicable borderline-blase attitude to the Zerg on Aiur (doesn't help this comes after the Zerg Campaign where we see this as a Big F'ing Problem for the Protoss) and their focus on political goals over military ones (comparison comes from the Terran campaign of all places, where we are subjected to repeated failures from the Confederacy to the point that simply doing our job ends with our arrest.) Serving under Aldaris is something like as if we served under General Duke in the Terran campaign.
    He's clearly given quite a bit of text and space to show his more displeasing qualities (as he opens in the campaign with how your actions have made him trust in the Templar again, which, since he's the political and religious leadership caste, seems like a pretty damn demoralizing thing to be saying to your underlings (it was along the lines of "At least you aren't all useless", though later it's more like "You aren't all traitors.")). I think he's more reasonable then he's let on to be: he does listen to Tassadar's "hey go murder a Cerebrate" plan despite having some significant distrust in Tassadar after his failure to stop the Zerg and sudden disappearance, and his later suspicion of Tassadar's further suggestions seems fair in light of that moment ("you killed a Cerebrate but you didn't do it right for reasons I just completely neglected to mention, sorry. But it'll totally work this time!")

  • @archsteel7

    Aldaris is, in my opinion, is the picture of "even a broken clock is right twice a day." Yes, he was correct about Kerrigan. But he was wrong about Tassadar, The Dark Templar, the Terrans, the Protoss's ability to defeat the Zerg in open conflict, attacking "defenseless" Cerebrates, the list kinda goes on. The thing is, he's just an extremely mistrusting zealot who views anything he doesn't understand, which is most things, with suspicion. Something that just kind of happens to be correct, once, with Kerrigan, but is pretty much just exclusively incorrect for the rest of the series.

    Scarab capacity is not that useless, at least at play levels below professional. Reavers attack faster than scarabs are built, so they actually have lower DPS once they run out of their stored scarabs. At the pro level reavers don't attack continually that often, so it's not very useful, but on the pro level reavers are also rarely used because HTs serve the same niche and have fewer weaknesses.

    I think a lot of the "Aldaris was right" stuff comes from Brood War where he sees right through Kerrigan and gets killed by his allies for his trouble. But even there Aldaris has the problem that he never tries to explain himself to the player character until its too late and he gets killed. We probably wouldn't have listened and things likely would have ended much the same way, but he never even tried.

    Aldaris is definitely wrong. He begins the campaign declaring Tassadar a failure for not murdering millions of innocent humans. He continues by condemning anyone who associates with the dark templar "heretics". While the zerg devour his homeworld, he goes out of his way to make enemies of people who have come back to help. We only ever see him make one good call, and even then he refuses to /explain/ that call and just tries to kill everyone who disagrees with him, which seems to be his standard operating procedure.
    I get the perspective that Tassadar is a general who disobeyed orders and went rogue, I really do. But the orders he disobeyed were to massacre civilians, and later to abandon the protoss's one and only hope of defeating the zerg. To the first, in real life, that would be a criminal order, and militaries have rules about disobeying criminal orders for a reason. To the second, well, I'd liken Tassadar's disobedience there to that of Stanislav Petrov irl. As important as maintaining military order can be, it's not more important than the whole world.

As far as I'm aware of, Zeratul, BC-Raynor, and Dragoon-Fenix all have faster attacks (there may be others, but can't think of them off top of my head). I believe Vulture-Raynor and Dragoon-Fenix are one of the only Hero units that do NOT come fully-teched (Raynor benefits from Iron Thrust, while Fenix benefits from Goon Range) Other heroes I have the upgraded tech defaulted on them (Such as Zealot-Legs on Zealot-Fenix in the first mission)

      It's mentioned in the SC1 manual who he is and what he did. There used to be TONS of backstory and hamd drawn art for everything in Blizzard manuals, and PC game manuals in general. Part necessity to explain what they couldn't in game due to tech limitations, and part because a big heavy box full of cool stuff was a selling point for PC back then. If your box didn't have sufficient weight to it, it likely wasn't selling without something else to back it up like shareware marketing.

    23:47 Aldaris's story makes me sad. He was a jerk, and he did take quite a bit of humbling but he did come around to the side of Tassadar and the others. He did try to do things their way after that, but what came of it? The new generation of Protoss would rather listen to KERRIGAN of all people than him! His misgivings about her even turned out to be right, but no one would listen. And even though he caused more pain and suffering with his rebellion, I can't really fault him for that because of his options as he would have seen them at the time.
    Admitting you're wrong takes courage, especially for someone so prideful as the judicators were, and it should be respected. When you interact with someone you disagree with in any capacity, you should always leave a way open for them to be accepted if they choose to go over to your view/position. If you keep rubbing it in their face that they were wrong, they will usually go back and double down on their old ways, and reconciliation will be nearly impossible.

    I still think Aldaris is right to be honest. If Tassadar would not have been so cryptic and antagonised him so much, I think he would have understood. He gave him a chance in mission two but Tassadar gave incomplete information about the cerebrates, wasting everyone's time. But, after Zeratul killed Gorn, Aldaris owned up to his mistakes and, in Brood War, he has respect for Zeratul.

    So, this part of the Protoss campaign is basically a Military coup, right? The conclave is the Aiur government, and the Templar is the military. The Executors, leaders of said military, order their troops to eliminate the opposition so they can ally with enemies of the state. On top of that, at the end of Brood War, Artanis, the Executor, is the leader of the Protoss. The Conclave, the former legitimate government, is nowhere to be found. Are we the baddies?

    • @strangestecho5088
      @strangestecho5088 2 роки тому +3

      The conclave leadership were completely blinded by fanaticism, which ultimately ensured the Overmind's success when invading Aiur. They were so worried about the 'taint' of the dark templar (who were demonized for wanting to live free of the Khala), that they chose to withdraw troops from the Zerg invasion to hunt down and arrest Tassadar. Despite his disregard of conclave orders, Tassadar was still actively fighting the Zerg invasion, yet they chose to prioritize starting a civil war. The first game ends with the Conclave being overwhelmed by the Zerg, and the remaining members make peace with Tassadar and the dark templar in a state of desperation.
      I think the assumption with Brood War is that the remaining Judicators sided with Aldaris's rebellion and were effectively wiped out in reprisal.

Refusing to adapt or see a different perspective as the conclave did was a bad decision, but we have the benefits of being an outside observer with both hind-sight and perfect knowledge.
      From Aldaris' and Tassadars perspectives, they have very strong and logical arguments for why they acted as they did. If they had the players knowledge or had effectively communicated what knowledge they did have things would have played out entirely differently, but effective communication and simple resolutions don't generally make for a good story.

But also in this thread, we have a lot of people willing to explore his perspective and not frame it as simply as "Aldaris' pride is ruinous". Though flawed, we can appreciate he his own guiding principles too.
