Shout-out to the unnamed cerebrate who held off a combined attack from three fleets (two races) while the "Queen Bitch of the Universe" couldn't be assed to help out. A true Chad.
I hereby dub the cerebrate megamind for doing so
Why the hell wasn't she there in the mission as a hero unit? Did she have constipation while the three fleets invaded?
@@Jacksonthehedgehog9 I think you meant Overmind but honestly I like this new headcanon better.
"Medic healing a zealot" I think we've hit all the carbot memes at this point
Krkr
I feel ya.
Krkr
Now imagine a stalker being healed by a medic and shielded by a sentry (is that their name? The floating orb Protoss unit from the gateway)
@@HurremDurrem stalker is mech, so he can be repaired by SCV :ь
@@RylanorWhoRemember ah true, time to make a Mobius Mod for multiplayer. The medics in that mod for SC2 can repair mech units
@@HurremDurrem Sounds interesting, I'll try it, thanks!
This mission is a great example of showing instead of telling. You know Mengsk is kind of broke when he can't field battle cruisers and has to utilize special forces. Altanis throws everything Protoss have, and UED is all about their fleet. It's common for this kind of missions to give every AI character by composition but this is especially good as they're not like "I only make infantry, destroy me with AOE"
True, but it's 'Artanis'. 'Altanis' would be an Archon made from Artanis and Aldaris... which would be awesome - sincere and yet sarcastic all the time.
@@TheUberjammer It makes perfect sense in lore that the UED would be attacking with primarily battlecruisers and air because the 2nd mission of the UED campaign was you stealing a large number of the Dominion's battlecruisers.
@@offthedeepend3996 It would make more sense if you'd replied to the original post though,
@@TheUberjammer I thought I did? My mistake.
@@LordMalice6d9 Dunno about this, apologizing seems a little out of character for 'Lord Malice'.
Artanis: Send the dark templar!
Du Gal: Send more battle cruisers!
Mensk: Another warhead!
The opening chat for this mission is both iconic, and hilariously weird: They absolutely have to establish who these enemies you're fighting are, there really isn't a better way to do it, so I respect why the scene is like it is, but watching Arcturus, Artanis, and Dugalle jump in on Kerrigan's private phone call with the cerebrate is kind of hilarious.
I just really love the "I'm pretty much queen bitch of the universe" line
@@jweweiler Oh yeah, Iconic as shit, and one of Kerrigan's better moments, it's just funny how hard the setup for the rest of the scene gets artificial the more you think about it.
I mean, outside of Terrans every briefing in the game should just be "[thinks hard] You got it?" given how much communication is done via telepathy
Entire Zerg campaign would've been Palpatin_Dew_it.mp3 on loop since there's not even a need for communication as equals, but as direct subordinate relationship
I feel at this point it's just canonical that the entire Koprulu sector has a few unencrypted group chat rooms they are all share.
@@Wrenling i
I Feel like this is the only mission that's quite like this though- very few missions have your enemies join you in the chat, or if they do, it feels like it has good in-universe reasons, and that bit of restraint is forgone here just so we get to know who we're fighting.
24:35 the siege tanks were blocking the ramp perfectly so the zerglings couldn't path the normal way
I'm pretty sure your zerglings got possessed by the angry ghost of Fenix, who used his dragoon pathfinding to lead them to their deaths.
This is beautiful, and now my head cannon! :3
The authentic Brood War experience
I love how Dugalle was secretly listening waiting his moment to reveal himself
I felt very sorry for him at the end he was reading a letter to his wife that we was never able to send, his guilt of killing his old friend unjustly and now he has to comply with heading back to earth just for kerrigan’s amusement of failing in that, also that music in the credits from myth 2 is fits so perfectly with how the game ends on a downer note and we were left hanging on that for a decade
42:01 Grant be like "You see, killbots have a preset kill limit. Knowing their weakness, I sent wave after wave of my own men at them until they reached their limit and shut down"
If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards.
Checkmate.
It's kind of impressive that Mengsk, Artanis, and DuGalle all managed to figure out how to inject themselves into the same private comms between Kerrigan and her Cerebrate at the same time.
Ah I love that cutscene that starts at 53:45 where Kerrigan talks behind my right ear.. Man what a sound problem to have.
This mission seems to be one of the only ones in Mass Recall that the 'additional heroes' option makes the mission far harder. You get kerrigan, who if she dies you lose. Enemies will sacrifice science vessals to irradiate her in the middle of your base, and she'll get targetted down first. The protoss gets Artanis in a super mothership with Planetcracker, and the terrans each get a super battlecruiser. They can't be killed, respawning after a few seconds, forcing you to clear out the main base areas last so you only need to kill them 2-3 times. They'll also join random attack waves sometimes.
That sounds like hell ngl, defending as zerg is probably the worst match up for them
i done this mission in this setup for 3 and half hours on normal. it was a hell when one enemy hero ship comes to ur base and kill everything^) and enemy heroes can be defeated if u kill main cc. which require to clear all base^)
additional heroes made this mission feel so much more epic.
Feels like the three enemy commanders *REALLY* want you dead, even if they need to do it themselves
Wasn't the original SC1 Omega mission like that? If one of the 3 enemy bases started taking major damage and was about to be destroyed the other 2 enemy fleets would launch a counter attack on your main base to try and get you to bring you forces back from the attack to defend?
a question: was it bugged everytime i had to restart it or does the Aleksandr never attack? Arthanis and Mensk are attacking always at the same time while DuGall just chills in his base.
I can't believe SC1 ended on so open note. The hybrids, the victory of a chaotic evil force (with no clear goal anymore) and the menacing feeling Kerrigan had at the end. "Yea, we'll come back maybe some time in the future with SC2"
I like that Mengsk's bases have his golographic statues thrown around. This, and the fact he uses different set of units than UED makes this mission more atmospheric. Sadly, he never got to fire his nuclear missiles. There were some at the main base at 48:58.
I'm gonna miss this series, thanks for running it through! It's become a nice video to have available each day.
Next one will be better!
Time for that Mass Recall coop campaign!
@@UM96lol I would play the heck out of that, does it exist?
@@7thAce I used to play it a lot in the sc2 arcade back in the day, unfortunately now it seems to have been removed (it was a much much older version)
I simply cannot express how good the chit-chat at the beginning of the mission is.
Oh wait, I actually can.
"Queen Bitch of the universe"
18:00 The song that's playing is actually LittleV's "Starcraft Zerg Theme 1" remix/cover, so it's likely it's just mixed at a slightly higher volume. Really neat to hear that in Mass Recall, in particular this mission.
When I first booted up Omega on MR, that played first and that was a jam. Big fan of it although I know the balancing on it in MR isn't quite right.
Given I watch these videos at 2.0x speed and forget about it, I was wondering why this badass speed metal track was playing in starcraft.
This is the most iconic mission for Kerrigan in all of StarCraft, in my opinion. I wish they kept this energy going into the second game. Just that heel turn from total panic to casual dismissal and “When it rains it pours.”
Rames Jaynor is how I’m going to call him from now on. Thanks for this gem, Grant.
o7
24:00, I think what happened is that the ramp was blocked by sieged tanks, which count as buildings for the purpose of pathing, and you gave them the order to go beyond the tanks, which is why they tried to go around.
Kind of the same reason why adept shades instructed to move into a Terran main will not try to go up the ramp.
if not, that was some starcraft 1 accurate pathing :P
It's exactly this. I had this exact problem in this exact spot here. Amusingly in SC1 the bad pathing would have made it not a problem, but SC2s better pathing causes the problem seen.
I don't remember alot of missions from brood war but this one stands out from it's scale and feeling of being the outnumbered swarm and eventually overcoming.
so, a few things:
i really think the "dearest helena" cutscene is one of the best of all of starcraft.
i love the themed enemies, it's something that's often missing. i think that this mission has a bit too many "oh, you didn't fully kill this area? now they're almost rebuilt again" moments though.
really looking forward to real scale. how will the gorgons look?
and i forgot like 3 points i wanted to make because i didn't write them down xD
bro I can tell you as someone who hasnt seen or heard any of the sc1 cutscene intro dialog things that the last thing I expected to hear outta kerrigans mouth was "I'm pretty much queen bitch of the universe" I never wanted her as a dommy mommy but after that DAMN the actual swagger in it LOL
Man kerrigan really was a much more fun character in sc1, wasn't she. Well, thanks for the series grant! I've enjoyed watching it alot.
For real, where was the "queen bitch of the universe" line when she beat the shit out of amon?
For the control group, if mass recall uses standard sc2 hotkey, you have alt+# to add the unit to the ctrl group # and remove them from any previous group.
Or shift+box select to remove unit from the selection and reform the group with ctrl+#
Grant: why is there a templar in my base?
Templar: dude I was chilling here for 15 minutes and storming your overlords offscreen. How have you not noticed me, senpai?
God this mission is just so good, it really feels like an incredible way to end the game All the previous characters you played as and alongside, you built them up with your own 2 hands, you controlled them as they were betrayed by Kerrigan and now by those same hands you have to murder them all and it starts off with 25 minutes of hell being attacked by 3 incredibly powerful enemies in an extremely exposed position, crawling your way out of your base and all of a sudden just controlling half the map finishing off with an incredible victory lap of cleaning up the remainder commanders. Every other mission always puts your starting position in a corner, both Starcraft 1 and 2, it's a safe haven with predictable attack paths but here you're thrown into the heat of battle with no comfort, or illusion of safety, your only solace is absolute domination. The mission really makes you feel like how Kerrigan is supposed to feel as a character and it's beautifully communicated through gameplay. In my opinion this is the ultimate final Starcraft mission in the entire series both in the sense of the Zerg campaign finale and the Starcraft 1 capstone.
I think my only gripe with this mission is that it features 2 Terran and 1 Protoss, narratively it makes perfect sense but gameplay wise I wish it was 1 Terran, 1 Zerg and 1 Protoss just to truly give that feeling of total domination over all 3 races, playable wise Mengsk really feels like the oddball in this mission where he feels the most gimped. I don't know how popular of a mission this is to recreate and mod but replacing him with a Zerg opponent would probably make for an incredible mission. But again, this mission is honestly perfect from it's opening to the enemy surrender quotes it hits everything you want it to hit, it's so good.
I thought about mixing the Ued with Zerg like in To Kill the Beast. But ofc that goes against the idea that the UED cant control the Zerg anymore
@@hiei49 Something like... "We may not have the Overmind any more... but our new friend Mengsk has lent us some Psi Emitters, and we still have our neurostimulants..."
either that or there's one last cerebrate not in Kerrigan's control, and that cerebrate is under UED's domination.
@@SittingOnEdgeman That would nullify the To Kill a Beast mission though as once the Overmind truly died the only remaining cerebrates are those under Kerrigan's control. Basically the reason there is no Zerg enemy in this final mission is because Kerrigan finished cleaning her house in the missions leading up to it so having a Zerg enemy here would nullify all those missions leading up to this one.
The only way to add a Zerg opponent here in a way that makes a modicum of sense is to bring Samir Duran in with some Zerg that followed him, not knowing he betrayed Kerrigan. However Duran has no qualm with Kerrigan and isn't trying to kill her so him being here wouldn't have made much sense either. Basically the mission is perfect as is with 2 Terran and 1 Protoss considering how all 3 campaigns lead up to this point.
@@SittingOnEdgeman There is one way that a Zerg enemy could have been featured in this mission. Daggoth the main cerebrate that was the 2nd in command of the first Overmind could have been leading what was left of the renegade Zerg in an attempt to get rid of Kerrigan and reclaim control of the Zerg. But Daggoth never once makes an appearance in Brood War as a character.
I'm the guy who balanced this map. I intentionally made the start the most challenging moment in the series, then I worried it would make the cleanup phase feel tame in comparison, but testing showed that it rather was the opposite. You get bullied so hard in the first part that pulverizing the rest of your enemies is just sweet revenge. It also fit really well narratively: the Zerg are caught off guard and it looks like the Allies could almost pull it off, but then they don't and you get a roaring rampage of conquering Zerg who re-establish dominance for good. Most of the credit goes to the Blizzard designers, of course, but I am super happy to still read, a decade later, that we nailed the atmosphere on this one.
*sends overlords into an attack wave of valkyries and battlecruisers
"Oh, gosh! They're killing all my overlords. No!"
:p
DuGalle was such a good character...
Too bad he was such a failure, but not every character can be cool and competent.
I would like to see a dream scenario to see DuGalle in SC 2 co-op mode. Then he'd have unique Valkyries and Medics. :p
@@RickySama240 He would absolutely need to have unique dialogue if the other commander is Stukov
Good thing you have never played through StarCraft 2. Now you can do that!
Not going Mutas on this mission is not canon... this platform is the muta breeding ground you get to take out in WOL
Maybe he cosplayed as the north western base, the ground-only base.
Look at that giant Grant games guy, he's really good at videogaming
I like the high templar you can just barely see the energy bar of at 9:05 (arrived about 10 seconds earlier) and he just chills there for a while, that he finally notices at 17:16
It's even better that he's talking about being caught with his pants down right as that High Templar casually wanders into his base, haha
(thanks for the time codes btw, I found it really hard to spot on the minimap, and that was when I was actively looking for it, haha)
You can actually see it REALLY clearly a couple of times between 9:27 and 9:45
Also, I'm kinda confused why it didn't storm already, at 16:17 for instance.
Although it's on-screen for maybe just 1 second, it had full energy for quite some time, and 16:18 seems really close to the Zerglings here - I'm surprised they didn't auto-attack.
Hell, the HT might even have done a Feedback on one of the Defilers!
(I mean, if the AI was good enough to cast Defensive Matrix on the tanks next to the Lurkers, why didn't it cast Feedback too, haha)
"And then DuGalle died on the way back to his home planet!"
Kids: "YAAAAAY!"
Fun fact: there is a typo in the message that Dugalle wrote in the last cinematic :P.
"I hope the audio levels are OK for you guys."
"What? I couldn't hear you over the sound of this banger."
Mengsk: Ok ghost team Bravo and Delta, your duty is to sneak their defenses and nuke the Hydralisk Den on the South
Ghost Johny: But sir, isnt Grant going to predict the pattern?
Mangsk: I will leave you in this platform so that the Zerg capture you! Nobody questions my orders
It's not like Mengsk is a stranger to leaving ghosts high and dry...
What a thumbnail for the last episode of this series
Y'know if you really think about it, Kerrigan kind of rode off the coat-tails of some nameless cerebrate she forced to do all her work for her.
Well, now I know what sc1 was all about. Thanks, Grant!
What about Age of Mythology Norse campaign on Titan Difficulty? :D
I wonder if you will even see this comment as it has been about 2 months now! if you do hey mister grantgames! hope you have a great day! It is really weird to have seen the whole StarCraft 1 campaign even though I have been playing StarCraft 2 since it came out. being able to experience the full story in a format that I actually enjoy and see where all these references came from is amazing! I had no idea that StarCraft 1 was so good and that I missed out on so much detail! after having watch the whole playthrough I was surprised to find that I actually preferred these campaigns over sc2's one even though I have played and loved StarCraft 2 for ... holy shit 12 years now MY LORD I am getting old! anyways thanks for doing a story playthrough it was really cool hearing your feedback on the story and the gameplay and being able to see the game in a StarCraft 2 engine! anyways thanks for the great series and I hope to see one for SC 2 one day to hear what you think of the stories and characters

Dark swarm removes damage from single target projectiles.
It doesn't protect troops from siege tanks aoe, lurker aoe and reaver aoe.
However, since reavers are broken in this mod, it causes a lot of issues and works like that only half the time.
Nevertheless, the supposed mechanic is single target protection.
The way Kerrigan sounds like she's rolling her eyes in mild irritation with the "when it rains it pours..."
So, a question to those who had never seen Starcraft 1 before Grant started this Mass Recall playthrough. Kerrigan didn't do to well during the best character poll. Now that you've seen her at her prime, would you have voted for her?
The Queen Bitch of the Universe title alone would've earnt my vote tbh, never expected to hear that from a blizzard game other than maybe diablo
Honestly it makes me hate borderline mary sue SC2 Kerrigan
Well, her motivation is still a big question, why does she want total control the zerg and what will she do after she achieve the goal?
And while she's a good character, she's not a good zerg character, especially not a good representative of the race.
No. She is a generic evil bad monster that betrays people for literally no reason doesn't have any plans beyond be evil and her decisions make no sense whatsoever.
@@ThanhLe-ti8nx Not a good Zerg character? She's the perfect Zerg character! Molded by the Overmind itself and eventually succeeded it, being stronger than the Overmind and anyone else could imagine. Why does she want total control of the Zerg? Because she saw first hand how harmful it is to have a divided race, being Mengsk lieutenant initially and fighting against the Confederacy. This notion was than reinforced by being the prized pupil of the Overmind who controlled all Zerg initially and fought tooth and nail to keep is so when the Terrans tried to interfere. What will she do after? I don't know, what does any other character do after? None of them have clear paths moving forward, in that sense SC2 received a pretty clean slate to choose the paths of all the SC1 characters that survived, and some that didn't too(Tassadar, Fenix, etc).
If you want to remove units from a control group press alt+number to create a new group with that number. The units will be removed from the group they were in before.
24:00 lings went for lower tank (it probably fired first), but the higher one was blocking the rampy way through it
This whole series has kept me company while I've been sick the past two weeks. Thank you for putting so much time into it. :)
Look at that GiantGrantGames, he's very good at the video gaming!
It was legendary. There's a sense of emptiness as this thing wraps up, but it was a beautiful story to see through the SC2 engine. Looking forward to the next ones!
Thank you Grant for doing this series, it has been a blast
Valkyrie does shine. I did played last patch a couple days ago and they done wonders but Corsairs are borked.
And i do remember that they always been borked.
@@onatyungul872 Are you sure the enemies just didn't have the armor upgrades yet to break the damage calculations?
You definitely played through the best way in the original Brood War, hitting Artanis, Dugalle, then Mengsk, as Artanis gets an insane DArchon/Reaver/Carrier count if allowed to max. However it's a great time turtling with Lurker/Hydra/a million spore colonies, then rushing Guardians/Devourers to hit Mengsk with a Air Zerg death ball. From there I go Infested Terran against the Protoss. People seldom use these three units, as they arent seen in multiplayer but they're incredibly strong in campaign.
Animorphs is a great book series, despite all the filler books they put out for money. It would actually make a very interesting TV show in this day and age, if they can get over the hurdle of needing to give the vast majority of the screen time to a bunch of teenage actors.
57:19 and here I was thinking if mindhawk trolled you hard that you will say the name incorrectly like the hawk he is xD
Rames jaynor
Just love the fact you noticed that high templar in your base after 14mins🤣🤣
Thank you so much for this series, Grant.
I've always loved SC1 and BW, but was too smol and scared to play it without cheat codes when I played it at a (probably too) young age. It was a delight to say the least to see you play through it, in all its warts (the damage calculation bugs) and undimmed glory (literally everything else).
It has been a blast.
Also, look at this Giant Grant Games. That dude is really good at video gaming!
This was such an awesome series Grant. Thank you so much. It's been so fun tuning in every day and watching this.

@@marley7868 True dat.
A brilliant end to a good series. Hopefully the per video discussion topics keep up when the SC2 story playthrough comes out. Cheers G3!
I think the zerglings used their psychic power to detect the tanks and pathed around them
The ramp you mentioned @24:00 was blocked by the tanks, so, since the lings couldn't get down throught the closer ramp, they went the long way.
On a side note, related to the Legacy of the Memes, I was thinking about a Carrier that doesn't spawn Interceptors, but Queens, that attack with spawn Broodlings, only it's not Broodlings, but Firebats.
Dude what were you smoking to come up with that 😆
Gratz, very fun to follow your playthrough. It would be funny to see how many overlords were killed in this mission xD
Did anyone else catch Rames Jaynor? 😂
Luv ur work brother 👍
OH’ That’s where she got that nickname…
The thumbnail made my soul shrivel. Good job, earned my sub today
Final mandatory comment saying I love this playthrough and thank you so much for all the content you provide Grant... I assure you that every time I feel like reliving the history of StarCraft I will return to this playlist :D.
What a trooper
I did Omega a few days ago - perhaps for my first time, can't remember - and used virtually only ground units. Mengsk's base took multiple maxed waves of hydralisks, lings and ultras. Lost 713 units in total. Dugalle and Artanis were down in one, the latter right at the start.
That wraith was like "I´ve overstayed my welcome - cya!"
What is the music the admiral listens to in his final moments? Is it a composition made for the game, or did they grab something classical?
I think it's a composition for the game, but I am not entirely sure.
It returns in a shout-out in WOL though, as part of the I, Mengsk suite, and plays during the cutscene where Raynor first encounters Valerian.
Perhaps the best episode 4 of them all
53:55 I like that the goliaths don bother to shoot that zergling, they are just runny away for dear life from the off screen mutalisks or guardians
Time to pick what playthrough to watch next.
The main thing I miss from SC1 is you the player are a general to all of these fights and the calls are talking to you directly.
This mission is a mess and I love it!!! ❤️
You can actually press alt+[number] to add selected units to a control group AND take them away from any other control group they're already in
I figured out why your game has looked so much easier. By using some of the custom options for more heroes and hero abilities, the missions are much harder to compensate. On this mission you get Kerrigan but all 3 opponents get hero units and hit you much harder, timing with the heroes too.
The UED masterfully placed its siege tanks so they blocked the bottom of the ramp, so the zerglings thought that way was blocked, and pathed around them.
1:45 eyyyyyyyyyyy i was waiting to see more "Artanis 64" :D
Grant, there is an option to create control group and remove these units from other control group.
By default it is Alt+0 (or other number currently not in use), this way all selected units move from existing control groups to 0.
Grant, its shift + box to deselect.
Grant: *sits up*
Me: So this is the power of ultra instinct
The thumbnail for this part is epic.
24:00 I think what happened is, that the sieged tanks completely blocked off the ramp and because 3rd matter state of starcraft the zerglings founds no concievable way through and decided to take the other path.
"You guys have no idea if I'm wearing pants or not, and neither does DuGalle." You underestimate the UED's intelligence gathering network.
Really enjoyed this series. So weird to see the old SC1 stuff with... decent... pathfinding.
DO THE STUKOV MISSIONS !
Kerrigan has an awesome Skype connection.
I can't remember because it was so long ago but I'm pretty sure this was the only mission of SC1 i couldn't beat back in the day. I think I took out the UED, but couldn't crack Mengsk or Artanis. Great mission
this mission is a ridiculous struggle on cerebrate difficulty. the motherships and jacksons revenge battlecruisers shit on my world.
I am pretty sure the mothership and Jackson revenge are from extra hero option, you get Kerrigan while Mengsk and Dugalle get beef up battlecruiser and Artanis get a beef up mothership( I believe it the one from safe haven ), all three also can’t die permanently
@@hungcuong606 ohhhh that would 100% make sense. i did play through it w/ the extra heroes on and had kerrigan. yea the freaking mothership just repeatedly attacks you and goes back to base to heal to full while white is smashing u from the top with tanks and bcs. it made me want to scream. felt so good to finally beat it though.
