With having zerg around... The Conclave are convinced they're winning, so I think it should be more subtle. Dead hive clusters, yet the creep isn't retreating. Signs of tunneling. "Rogue" queens using parasite for vision. Nidus canals where zerg pop out every few minutes and run across the ground you can't build on, then pop into another canal.

What would make a mission better: Salvation in LotV would have been made much better if, halfway through the mission, Amon started sending not just soldiers but also mind-controlled civilians towards the temple.
The way the mission is now, fighting the possessed Protoss feels no different from fighting the Tal'darim, who you've been killing all campaign long. So lines like "You claim to save of your people, yet here you stand... a butcher!" and "Their Blood is on your hands, Artanis. False savior. Your Defiance means their death!" lack any emotional impact.
Sending massed waves of civilians into the meat grinder would show how evil Amon is, and how he grows desperate as the Keystone is about to activate.

I feel that the Zerg not being there is more telling of why the Conclave feel the way they do. They see no Zerg, there strategies (to them) seem to be working, and this one traitor who is actively turning Protoss against Protoss, working with the Dark ones and basically giving bad advice and completely ignoring his orders and going AWOL is far more of a threat since he's the enemy within. Also keep in mind, Tassadar, might have prevented the invasion of Aiur had he actually carried out his orders.

I think a SC1 reimagined campaign is a great idea. Like adding things that build more environmental storytelling into it. An example being the Terran missions where you have use Psi Emitter to attract the zerg. Adding civilians and their structures to those maps would help send home the idea of how monstrous an action this is. In fact adding civilians to any of the missions that take place on appropriate planets would do a lot to make the worlds feel more real. Not every protoss is a warrior, there should be a bunch running around on the Aiur missions. Not that they need to be objectives or anything, just little set dressing that maybe you try to save because you want to.

Your idea of adding zerg attacks to the mission like in Smash and Garb would be interesting. Have like the Baelrog Brood send attacks and put the player in a race against the zerg to get to Tassadar first. Lore wise, I don't think this is Khor-Shakal, but rather some prison fortress so, it's far enough for the Conclave to believe that they are still safe from the zerg but, close enough for the player to understand their hubris. Like you said, having the zerg on this map would really nail the point that the Conclave is dooming Aiur because of vainglory.

It seems that the reaver (or however its written) just deals damage when it hits its target, so when it targets a dragoon but there is a wall of zealots blocking the path of the bomb, it doesnt deal damage when it expires, thats why it didnt make damage to the buildings

End what fo Fenix and Raynor after that? Go and kill more Protoss to free Tassadar again?! This whole mission seems pointless. Will Tassadar surrender again, when he is attacked by Protoss, so Fenix and Raynor can free him again?

Tassadar surrendered hoping it would end the fighting. But his followers are like "Dude, don't surrender. Now Aldaris, let's actually get some stuff done because if you attack me again, I have a hugely loyal following willing to break me out."
Then Aldaris is like "Alright fine... Zeratul made a great speech anyway..."

Something that would be fun for a mission like this is having a 'bonus objective' like in SC2 - say some civilian protross buildings scattered around that have some zerg spawns killing them. If you can kill the zerg in time you get, idk, some kind of bonus. Would be cool if that could reduce the spawn rate of hostiles (ie they are not wanting to fight you seeing you saving civilians). Or just minerals.

  • @parkerdixon-word6295
    @parkerdixon-word6295 2 роки тому +6

I would LOVE to play a version of SC1 made in the SC2 engine, like SC2- a remake as opposed to Mass Recall's faithful remaster, so to speak, where you get SC2-style bases and Mineral Fields, and units probably end up based on their SC2 versions more than SC1 stats, but the missions are designed to be true to the spirit of the original more than the details. Maybe even working in some mild bonus objectives into the missions whenever it works out, like being able to eliminate some pockets of Zerg here to show that Aiur is falling. The rewards for them can frankly be as small as minerals in the mission or a few reinforcements, protoss who choose to take your side over the Conclave's as a result of your actions, etc.

Here's how I would include the zerg on this mission: Have a small island hive, reasonably well defended with mutas and guardians, no land access. For the first few minutes of the mission, they send out small harrassing waves of mutalisks and scourge. Time them such that the zerg arrive at about the same time as protoss attack waves, so that the protoss are weakened before arriving at the player's base. After a few minutes in game, spawn a player controlled observer near the zerg hive and announce that the zerg appear to be withdrawing. Have every unit the zerg base fly off the map. Any land units, including drones, get picked up by overlords. Flyers just leave. Afterwards, the zerg base does nothing. It doesn't produce units or replace losses. The base can be destroyed for an expansion.
The zerg on Char (EDIT: and Aiur) aren't mindless. The Overmind is actually pretty smart. If your enemies are intent on shooting each other YOU GET OUT OF THEIR WAY.

I think the arbiter is the essence of the Protoss identity in sc1. Templars are cool, but storm is just aoe damage and there are lots of ways to accomplish that. Carriers are neat, but honestly you could have made the carrier Terran and the battlecruiser Protoss and it wouldn’t change anything. Then you have this crazy thing that just turns other units invisible permanently, teleports entire armies and can just remove things from time and it becomes clear that the Terrans aren’t even playing in the same league as the Protoss. Science vessels and ghosts are barely scratching the surface of what’s possible.

As an addendum to my previous comment, the Terran base being an automated ally in the SC1 finale would help make the Protoss the star of the show, which is arguably how it should be. Playing the two 'good guy' races at once was a neat gimmick and felt good from a story perspective in 1998, but now that Protoss 10 isn't the end of the StarCraft story, it's a gimmick we could do without.

I did notice that a single reaver firing scarabs and each shot did damage, but any time there were two or more, their shots seem to interfere with each other.

On the subject of extra triggers. You mentioned in the WC3 deathless videos that you like build missions which also have a parallel no-build part. What if, in Higher Ground, you also got to command Fenix leading a small squad of elite Protoss defending Antioch against waves of Zerg while you do the main objective? It wouldn't have to be particularly difficult, but it would add something cool to do to another generic "kill everything on the map" mission, and could also serve as a soft time limit for the main objective. More importantly, it would add so much more meaning to the following cinematic where Fenix finally falls, because you would have seen him struggle and slowly lose against the Zerg onslaught in the actual mission.

I think dynamic speech triggers would be cool. For example if you go mass carrier on this mission Aldaris or another judicator will say that their "long-range radar system picked up a lot of carrier signatures" or something. And maybe a top of that the AI can build additional scouts and less reavers to counter massive carriers fleet. So you don't just use a single unit the entire game.
Also congratulations to your new blanket!

I have no idea for sc1, but if someone where to remake wol, I would like to see either tosh or nova to be present in belly of the beast, I think that would be really cool

It always scuffed me that Jim didn't drop any SCVs in this mission. Just copy the unit (in old SC) and just have that clone only capable of repairing.

during one of the fights of Fenix vs scouts, I noticed they made the wrong attack speed on Fenix. Was something that was both unique to Fenix dragoon form and Raynor Vulture/Hyperion, was that they had slightly improve attack speeds over the original unit counterpart

An Idea that came to mind in rebuilding the SC1 campaign would be the addition of non SC1 units in places they fit. For example Stalkers instead of dragoons when fighting on Shakuras or Colossi to spice up the Zerg campaign finale.
More cool addition May include an expansion of the characters and their relationship (Raynor has more onscreen relationship with the Protoss than with Kerrigan).
The non plus Ultra would be the addition of new missions exploring the unseen battlefields of SC1
(Deploying the Psi emitter on Korhall, more fights against Kerrigan on Char etc.)
Edit: also adapt mineral field and vespine geysir placement to SC 2 standard

While I liked the missions in Starcraft 2 I think that the general problem of all three campaigns was the lack of long macro missions. There was always a timer or some other form of urgency and the number of available bases was usually quite limited. 15 minutes might be a good length of a multiplayer match, but I feel like one could expect something longer from a single mission in the campaign. The devs should've taken a page from their own older book.

    On this mission
If they could have the hyperion to also have a mule ability, that would be pretty great.
Edit: you could also have an SCV. Give you access to the entire terran tech tree, make you able to go BC carrier as a comp.

If i am not mistaken, in SC1Reavers only deal damage if the scarab explodes on the intended target. If there is no path avaiable, the scarab get stucked and eventually explodes with no damage at all because it couldn´t get near the target the AI is attacking. Meaning invincible gateway.

As far as a reimagined SC1 campaign, a few ideas come to mind. 1) give the player more to do in Terran three, the last mission on Mar Sara. Simplest option would be more options on the tech tree to vary builds. Or perhaps more objectives like having to alternate between fending off Zerg attacks and rescuing pockets of civilians. 2) add an additional mission or extend the end of the last mission on Antiga Prime, so that after the players use the psi emitter, Zerg show up and the player has to slip through them and the distracted Confederates. 3) a mission of hijacking the Hyperion would have been awesome before the finale of the Terran campaign.

Ok you can see the stasis timer on them when they hit themselves but not on your units, I wonder if it's because the enemy carrier was using a StarCraft 2 base game skin

Ah, lone Arbiters randomly stasis-ing your army. Glad to see that survived the update to SC2.
This map really, really wants you to use carriers, hence the long zigzagging path for ground attack.
