This video demonstrates how to make your very own Finish Spatula the FCR Way. This is a super handy tool around the rod building shop.

Just finished my first rod with this tool. Thank you for the video! The results were the best SterlingGray Outfitters has done yet. Thanks again!

Hey Bill, thanks again for another GREAT video. I have learned a tremendous amount watching your videos getting tips and tricks. I watched the decal video which saved me from making mistakes and messing up my decals, yes I ordered decal connection and ordered a sheet of decals. I was about to just slap it on....good thing I watched the video on how to do it right. Let me know if you still want those lathes...if so send me a email...Roy

Again a great video with well explained and demonstrated details! I know it’s been a long time since posting a new video, but all your content is new to me. But anyway are you aware that there are scotch guard abrasives wheels. So much better at leaving a really nice finish if mirror gloss is not what is needed. Fantastic at rust removal! Take care!

Another great and professional video - very beautiful !!!I would like to ask if you have a video or recommendation for a method where you can put guides on the rod and they will all be in one line (before epoxy) - many times each guide goes in a slightly different direction and it takes a long time to reset them, if you have a method, I would be very happy - thank you in advanced !!!

Thanks for watching. So, this process - guide alignment - is one of my least favorite tasks. It's a pain. But you can master it with practice.
There are lots of ways to do this, but here is what I do. I place a reel on the rod to align the tip top (which I mount with 5 minute epoxy). I make sure I get the tip top installed with perfect - and I mean perfect - alignment relative to the reel.
From there, I attach my first (butt most) guide and align it with the tip top. For each additional guide, I make sure I am very careful when placing each guide on the rod with Flex Coat Guide Foot adhesive before I wrap it. I get them as straight as possible by aligning them with the last guide I wrapped on. You can tell when they are centered when the rod bisects the ring perfectly when viewed from directly above.
After all guides are wrapped, I sight down the rod and make sure all guides are aligned with the tip top from tip to butt. It can be tedious, but if you placed them on the rod carefully before wrapping you usually only have to make a few minor adjustments. And the Flex Coat guide foot adhesive makes moving them around easy.
This isn't exactly what I do (I place them one at a time and wrap them one at a time rather than all at once), but this is a good video to show you some ideas that may work for you:

I got the 4pack from mud hole and it's all I use for mixing. Still use brushes for epoxying wraps though. I'll have to try it on guides

To me the spatula is a very useful tool. Some like it for wrap finish others don't. Whatever works best for you is the right way to go!

Hey Bill! I ordered the spatula from Widget and received it today. You are right, it is not the finest instrument out of the package but after shaping, polishing and Plasti Dipping it looks great! Time to put down the brush and try the spatula. Also, I have a video suggestion. How about covering thread size and thread tension. Thanks and great videos.

Thanks for watching - please like and subscribe! So glad you got the spatula. Give it a try...it’s an adjustment but gives you a ton of precise control once mastered.
Never thought about thread tension...great idea. Let me work on it!

I like my spatula but never considered customizing it like that - I will now. I actually started using the 1 I have on long butt wraps - put it on with a brush - then use the edge of the spatula up and down the wrap slowly (perpendicular to the wrap- spinning 200 rpm)- it seems to leave very small narrow rings that level out nicely giving me a clean level finish!👍

    • @masteringrodbuilding
      @masteringrodbuilding  3 роки тому

YES! This is exactly how Ralph O'Quinn applied his butt wrap finish. Ralph invented Rod Bond, Dura Gloss, Permagloss, etc. He always called those very narrow rings 'screw threads' and said as long as you keep the threads all the same size and a consistent distance apart it will level perfectly.
This just proves again there are lots of ways to get a great result. Builders just need to find what works best for them.

I definitely didn’t come up with it for myself - read it in rod maker magazine - and Ralph was the teacher!!!!👏👏👏👏 Give credit where credit is due ! And let me thank you for the videos YOU are putting out - EXCELLENT! Some of the best out there! I love doing the gold leaf dragon scale and often refer back your instruction!!!

Hey Bill I was wondering where you found that shape on the finish video cause after watching the video I went looking for a spatula. Found lots of them but none with that shape. Great idea and as always another great video with very useful info 👍. Keep those lines tight and keep videos coming I'll surely be watching.
