King of the streets! Dude was one of the original MMA fighters! Had striking and grappling. All around fighter
Yes. That man was a legend. And he fought in an era where weight classes where just getting figured out for the sport….
He kept on chopping at that tree trunk until the whole crowd were yelling: "TIMBER!!!"
People forgotten about Marco ruas but everyone remembers Royce. This man would've won the first two UFC tournaments if he was in there 💯
Pedro rizzo was another Brazilian savage during this time.
Frank Shamrock was also a complete player
@user-hn2if1uc8x What people outside of Brazil do not know is that Marco Ruas was very used to fight with Jiu Jitsu guys including gracies in MMA (at they time they used to call it "Vale Tudo") events inside Brazil. He could have won or lost, but he would definitely not be surprised by Jiu-Jitsu's techniques.
A regular civilian would have quit after one kick. Incredible, he lasted so long.
Paul was a real warrior, not very good technically but he had a big heart
Ruas vale tudo rsrs = MMA
He’s simply the first. If he didn’t come along then there would have been another “First”
I remember watching this back in the days... One of my all time favorite fighters this guy was a beast of a fighter.
You must remember that line 'he's gonna be the leaning tower of varlens' 😂
E o rua pegou algum desses?????
Marco Ruas truly created MMA. Marco Ruas, verdadeiramente, criou o MMA.
KING OF THE STREETS 🔥💯
My first favorite MMA fighter… because of this tournament and this fight.
I remember watching this on VHS. Back when everyone had 1-2 styles, Marco Ruas had multiple just like today. This was a long fight, and he swapped strategies multiple times during the fight. Shows high fight IQ as well 👍👍
He gave him that leg on a silver platter 😮..every time..
He tried to check a few times but it’s like his brain couldn’t figure it out ☠️ I’m actually curious to wonder how he even knew to do that, most untrained strikers would think to try to grab the leg before ever thinking of checking
Marco Ruas, The Pioneer of The MMA.
Casuals don't know this guy brought the foot stomps into the UFC.
Freakin casuals...their such casuals...ugh damn casuals. Such casuals huh? Casuals...psh. Unreal.
@@garymorris1
Uh yaaaa. Actually u are a filthy casual if you haven't rented the first 59 UFCs on vhs from Blockbuster.
Sorry man, I don't know what to tell u.
That's just the reality.
You should also should be well-versed in PrideFC. Do u even know who Bobbu Sappu is?
Varelans, Keith Hackney, Joe San do, Tank, Freddy Mercury, etc, are essential viewing for any respectable student of cage fighting history.
For example, 19 year old Vittor's steroid fueled blitz demolition of Vanderlei is fundamental knowledge that u must have.
Its also a good idea to be familiar with Gary Goodrich robotically pounding that one guy with elbows while wearing the black kimono.
Me and my friends watched much of these pankration spectacles on PPV when we were teenagers in the 90s
This guy’s an absolute legend. This is the guy that the Gracie’s steered clear of… that’s why you never saw any of them fight or challenge him! He was way ahead of his time. Wish I could’ve trained with him when a younger man I was. Definitely my idol growing up
🥊👏🏾🫡🙏✌🏾
Marco Ruas the best of the best ....
This is why it is smart to learn how to fight strong side forward as well.
@georgiaguidestones2999 Yes. Especially for strikers who kick. Around 30% of the time your kicking attacks will end with your strong leg forward because your opponent counterattacks. At that time you need to shift laterally off the line of attack or fight back with your strong side forward.
In the case of this video, Ruas was chopping the leg out from under the bigger man who did not have leg kick defense. He could have switched sides and protected his injured left leg but didn't know how to do it.
@vernshein5430 most of the elite fighters are able to that these days. Back then MMA was completely new and it was one martial art against another. Know ufc fighters are complete in most areas unlike 30 years ago when most fighters had no clue how to check a leg kick.
mma is old sport . It date back to the Roman empire and the gladiators in the coliseum. It wasn't called MMA but it was the same warrior Mindsetof mixed fights style @@georgiaguidestones2999
@@georgiaguidestones2999actually no they aren’t Lmfao, you don’t see many ufc fighters even at the highest level that are able to switch stance. Most people are just not naturally switch hitters or have no interest in developing it. It’s more common in kickboxing, they don’t even switch that much in Muay Thai
Marco Ruas, o precursor das artes marciais mescladas! Até hoje ele tá uma rocha! 🎯
I recall watching this fight live. It was the coolest thing I ever saw.
Ruas was fearless!!! Old school monster!!!
Marco Ruas was a beast!! He knew the way to beat any opponent back in the day where there was no weight limit. Watching him fight Varleans had me on the edge of my seat the entire time bc varleans had a weight advantage over most fighters. And as a trap fighter his weight played a big role. Congrats on making UFC WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE….you encounter a random guy at random weight in the streets…..round one FIGHT!!!!!
I feel this is best early example of effective leg kicks in og UFC. Respect to both guys, great fight. Ruas impressive
I remember watching this fight when it took place. Marco, Pedro, and Justin. Best leg kickers the game has ever seen
Marco samurai Ruas.

The king of the streets, that's what they called him when he first came into the UFC, I remember watching this with my buddies. Life goes by way too fast, you young guys out there enjoy every minute of it.
Marco Ruas was the first MMA fighter. He trained and was good on all areas.
Imagine if the polar bear was trained to modern standards? Fool was huge
If he trained by any standard period. He was street brawler self trained by watching video tapes
So fuckin strategic.... Art of War shit
Definitely ahead of his time with these leg kicks.
Those early UFC on VHS must have been a trip!!!
The definition of persistence
Marco Ruas e a lenda viva, o destruidor
So much better without gloves and no decisions. No point sparing, no controversy.
@@garymorris1 Disagree, but I get you. Way too much striking now for me, early UFCs each punch had to count. Nobody like Strickland that just fights to win rounds. To the finish or nothing, more like the real thing. How many modern UFC fights do we she with no takedowns and no attempted subs, just basically kickboxing with smaller gloves.
@jou1900 Nah its my view on an unimportant issue, so it belongs to me, not to you. Love first 15 or so UFCs more than any modern card. It's just much closer to real fighting, why allow hand tape and gloves, but not shoes? Guys train to win rounds, but before you just had to win the fight, the only option. If you're allowed to make your hands into bricks changes everything.
You guys love watching unwatchable shit. Guarantee most of the people liking this post have never attempted sitting trough these dogshit early cards.
@@forwhatitsworth in 2013 the ufc had a finish rate of 52% across all weight classes. In 2022 the finish rate was 56%. Why would the finish rate go up if the UFC has trended in the direction you claim it did?
If anyone deserves to be in the hall of fame it's this guy
Shows how good leg kicks are. One of the easier strikes to land but the damage piles up
back in the early '80's my old Sifu took a group of us to watch a full contact competition. There was a Dutch kick boxer against a shotokan fighter, The Dutch fighter had just shorts on and had huge calves and legs. He chopped the shotokan guy until he couldn't stand and then knocked him out with a head kick, when the shotokan guy lowered his hand to protect his legs. I was only a kid at the time and was sitting 3 rows out and could hear those kicks.
That fight made Ruas a legend😮
Marco Ruas the inventor of MMA
That's what i call a foot stamp 😂.
I got Ruas’ autograph at a UFC event. Awesome guy.
and people thing these kicks is a recent invention... Marco Ruas was so strong... incredible
One of THE best classical fights.
Marco was a damn weapon back then. They wouldn't even let him fight the Gracies he would of jacked them up!
Gotta say also, the Polar Bear Paul Varelans, what an absolute warrior
Rest in peace my friend🫡🙏🥊
I know you’re up there celebrating in Valhalla 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👋🏾✌🏾
Brutal. That guy was on crutches after that fight for sure
Marco Ruas Hall of Fame now
Flawless execution. Wasn't defending the kick. Much taller and bigger. Chop the leg, as soon as he crumbles finish the job. Amazing how the polar bear just watched him do exactly what he wanted and didn't try to stop it. Imagine what that leg looked like after the fight...
Marcos need respect. He was the first UFC champion
Marco Ruas, the first real MMA FIGHTER ever
King of the streets vs the polar bear. I used to have this on VHS back in the day
Hall of Fame to Ruas now
Remember this well. Wish UFC and Pride would go back to their early days.
Vale Tudo since the early 80s
Top athlete in 4 different forms of fighting

Marco a real one. Legend
Those losses towards the end of his career basically had limited Achilles and cartilage left in a battle tested body
The King of the Streets 👊
Watching this sure shows you how far mma has come as a sport.
Modern ufc should have that camera that captures above the contenders. It reminds me of Tekken 2.
Marco Rua's shot was like a baseball bat.
The Gracies never have nuts to combat with Marco Ruas.
Marco ruas uma lenda. 👊🏽🇧🇷

Eu lembro dessa luta. Ruas era MUITO bom nesses chutes.
Marcos Ruas legend, UFC Hall of Fame.
Legends, both.
Don't forget the Myth about Marco Ruas an Richson Gracie fought on the beach n Rio for 4 hours 🔥🤯 i would do almost anything to see that 🤣💯🔥🥋
How Paul took so many kicks to the thigh is incredible.
I love the early days of the MMA fights.

How dumb are you gonna be to sit there and let him keep kicking your leg
