eh, the reason more of them didn't vote to impeach wasn't that they are complacent, it's more because they are spineless cowards. and i mean, to be fair, they do have a good reason to fear for their lives and those of their families, but it is also kind of a "leopards ate my face" situation, since they were the ones who actively fomented and encouraged the leopards who are now eating people's faces so they could get re-elected. they're afraid of the monster that they've created.

This isn’t about free expression, this is about Trump and his followers reinforcing each other, mutually supporting what is worst in all of them. The link is broken, Trump can no longer experience the online adulation of his fanatics, nor do they get their Trump fix. This was never about expression, it was about a feedback loop.

Even if no more violence happens, there's no way that this is a peaceful transition of power, because violence has already happened. That ship has sailed and we missed it.
It's also not seamless, because a seamless transition would have started 2 months ago to ensure Biden's team is fully informed and prepared when taking office.
Trump has still not conceded. He has not admitted Biden won. He hasn’t said that the election was fair. He refuses to say he lost. That’s a problem.

They were all calling for unity while attacking Democrats and supporting a president who did nothing but widen the divide. He called them "do-nothing Democrats" how many times? Sleepy Joe? Crazy Joe? While I’m surprised she couldn’t get more, I’m thankful for the symbolism of the 10 votes to impeach from Republicans in the house, spearheaded by Liz Cheney, who’s state of Wyoming voted for trump 70-30% over Biden. THAT is patriotism, country above both party and political career. As a liberal, Liz Cheney is not my favorite human on the planet, and yeah we disagree on a lot. But she has earned my respect by continuously standing up to and criticizing trump, and by voting to impeach.
Trump has ruined the GOP brand. She cannot save it. But she is on the right side of history.

If she was a patriot, she would have left the Republican Party after hearing the phone conversation of Trump telling the Georgia Secretary of State to find him votes. The entire G.O.P. is ignoring that little phone call while still trying to overturn the election anyway they can.

You make a good point about him fanning the flames for 4 years. I was thinking that it was a moot point to bar him from running then when he will be too old to do it anyway, but you're right he'd go around threatening to run if he could and this gives him one less weapon in his arsenal of gaslighting.
Still, he'll make a story about how being censured is because he is 'too real' and claim to be a radically good guy whose cons you should fall for, while he runs his kid as his puppet candidate.
