Chris, I used to work in an AGM and SLI battery mfg plant and I can say for certain that the example you cut open was our fault. The pole that fell from the battery plates is caused by manufacturing defect. The plates are cast long before they are dipped into the mold of the cell. If the lugs (thin fingers above the plates) are dirty, wet, or cold, the cell won't cast perfectly. Early 2000's Dodge Intrepid, battery is forward of the passenger side front tire in a compartment. Tire has to be removed to access. Pulling the air box off helps with getting the battery out. 45 min to and hour job.
@@Scotty-vs4lf Didn't intend to end up with this car. Cosigned on a loan that went south and ended up with it. 18,000 miles on it when I got it and 164,000 now. I'm into it for normal maintenance, a water pump and changed out the timing chain set when that was done. Not a Dodge guy but I can't complain. It doesn't owe me a thing.
Good on you for adding the tip on not putting you tools on top of the battery. This is very important, and the average person really doesn't understand what can happen. I was working on a side post battery a long time ago and started talking to my son while I was wrenching on the terminals, it distracted me for a second.. The wrench made contact with both terminals and welded itself to the terminals. I grabbed the wrench and broke it loose, and it was so hot all I could do was throw it away from the battery. This all happened in about a 3 second time frame. I feel lucky that it didn't blow. I've seen batteries blow up on people before, It's not a pretty sight. I'm reminded of this everytime I use that wrench, because it had a chunk missing out of the box end where it arced to the positive terminal.
Not only did you show the battery maintenance, you also demonstrated dying battery symptoms, the battery locations on different cars, this video is the best.
The other thing I always wonder is how you sync your video and speech. Sometimes I can tell the audio was live recorded, but most time it sounds like it's was added by post processing because the audio is so clear and loud, no background noise. I can only guess you will have to speak one time while recording video, then speak for the second time and add it for the final output. If that's way you do it, that's lots of work. And every BEFORE and AFTER transition, it's also so amazing. How do you hold the camera at exactly the same spot at different time. Those camera tricks might be your secret, you don't have to share them here : )
Thanks, your videos are invalueable to me. I still get nervous working on my car, but you make it easier. I had a flickering battery symbol pop up on my Camry’s display, and I thought for sure it was going to be an expensive fix. I checked the voltage, and it was 12.5v, and then 14.1v when running. The positive terminal had some corrosion, which I removed using your suggestions, and the symbol went away. The battery is 4.5 years old so I am going to replace it before the Winter.
I ordered my very first car. It's a Kia Picanto 2020. I watched your videos before purchasing to see what to look out for and now I watch them to see how to tend for my car. Thanks. Also hello from Central Asia :P
One little note, when measuring voltage across the battery you should measure the voltage across the battery terminals as well to ensure there is good connectivity between bat terminals and the battery leads . Awesome video
I think you can also just measure resistance between the battery post and the terminal itself. It would be better to use a bonding meter so you can see the miliOhms but an ordinary multimeter will do. However, if a person has any doubt about the connection, it would be better to disconnect them and clean, clean, clean.....then reassemble and apply corrosion preventative compound.
Love the videos as always, especially the amazing attention to detail and great content. But everyone here knows Chris Fix wouldn't actually have three dead cars, he's just that committed to teaching us 😂
For what i received i passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the scriptures 1 Corinthians 15 3 PS: "according to the Scriptures" - what the Apostle means is that Lord Jesus fulfilled prophecy's of the Prophets of God in Old Testament. There are like hundreds of Prophecies that Lord Jesus fulfilled, just look it up dear ones. God is our Father. He is the best of Fathers, the most lovable and merciful of Fathers. Read the whole uncensored Bible that is Catholic(The Original) and pray my friends. Wish you all well
Recently purchased a battery and they tacked on the installation kit without me saying anything. At first I thought it was just an up-sale to try and get more money out of me but glad to know it actually has a good use!
Something to note with battery group models is some have an R suffix. The R models have the positive and negative terminals reversed from the non-R. It's very important to verify your terminal placement.
Omg this is literally PERFECT timing! My hummer didn’t start after a few weeks & struggles after a week-ish, so I figured something was up. Chrisfix always coming in clutch!!!
I watch Alot of your videos over and over because I want to become a mechanic or a vehicle technician. I love working on cars and learning about how they work and problem-solving.
I’m grateful for you taking the time to make these videos. I would like to add a few items that were not included. You neglected to include the fuse panels that are inside the vehicle and that you will need to be able to access them so like disabling the hood open sensor you will also need to latch the door locking mechanism to disable the sensors. Don’t forget to return them to the unlocked position before closing the doors and the hood. One more thing is that the plastic cover that you mentioned that you like to replace over the terminal after installing the new battery sometimes includes a small plug attached to it that should be installed into the unused vent port on the new battery so that harmful liquid will not leak out causing damage and you should also attach a vent tube to the other vent port on the new battery and rout the other end down and out of the vehicle. I’m not criticizing you, just trying to help the people that are looking to you for guidance. Thank you for making these videos.
I always tell my friends about your channel Chris and how good it is. This battery maintenance video is just super. Who remembers all these things today, and it is helpful for mechanics or lay people who just had a bad day with a dead or dying battery. Very good video. Should be mandatory to watch this ( once a year at least). You might not fix it yourself, but you have at least an idea of what is going on/ what may be wrong/ and if the attendant is trying to rip you off on more maintenance charges or jobs! It can be a nasty world out there for the uninformed. Once again Chris. Thanks. One of the BEST videos you have done, and that is saying a lot.
Just a small tip... Sometimes the wheatstone bridge rectifier will go bad in an alternator which will allow a/c pulsed voltage to goto the battery. This pulse will eventually kill a battery. While testing your charging circuit, you should always check for a/c voltage on the line. Too many times I've seen batteries destroyed from a defective alternator diode. Also, if your cigarette lighter or other power accessory is always hot, like most FORD vehicles, then plug a small 12v battery or one of those 12v trickle charging battery maintainers in the accessory port when changing out the battery.
Great video! Some batteries are in even weirder places than the trunk or back seat. I drive a 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T, and the battery is in the drivers side front bumper/fender. In order to replace the battery, you have to jack up the car, take the wheel and inner fender liner off, and then change the battery. Plus, to make it even harder, they put the negative terminal at the far end so it’s almost impossible to get off without taking the positive side off first.
My uncle has a first gen Dodge Viper that he’s owned since new and the only way to access that battery is in the drivers side rear wheel well. There was a period about a decade ago when he left it sitting in the garage for over a year and my cousins tried to get it fired up, but the battery was dead. I’ll never forget that moment when I was walking up the driveway to my grandparents house (they live next door to each other) and seeing some guy from AAA removing the wheel off the thing, I was so confused and even more confused seeing him then open up a panel in there and pull out a battery.
Today I just replaced the battery on my 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. I used my battery tester to test my other battery and it says 106 CCA Replace. So I went to my local auto parts store and bought a brand new battery, i installed a brand new battery and now my car finally starts right up a lot faster!
Just a quick tip: For the replacement w/o resetting the car's ECUs - you can also connect any 12V power supply to the terminals or even the cigarette lighter :) It is much easier that the bulky jumper cables and most importantly - you don't have to hurry with the quick removing the cables while quickly touching the terminals.
As usual Cris, a well thought out video. Your videos are informative and you don't include stuff that doesn't pertain to the video. There's nothing worse then trying to research something and end up watching someone tell you everything except the information your looking for or to watch them remove 10 bolts, for example. Keep up the good work! Thanks

Nice job... I know what Im doing but stubled on this video and checked it out anyway.... its good to see someone not just showing all the hows but why to do or not do something... covered all the basics and even other important things to be aware of.. all accurate and not done in a rediculously long or boring way.. Even covered parasitic draws and gave away all the little secrets on diagnosing it...

That’s the goal with all my videos. Show the whole process and everything in between !
@@chrisfix Yes, I noticed that in others videos, just waited until now to let you know how great, helpful your videos are, excellent quality.

You know its a good day when chris fix has a new video

One little note, when measuring voltage across the battery you should measure the voltage across the battery terminals as well to ensure there is good connectivity between bat terminals and the battery leads . Awesome video
Thanks for the tip!
Hi Chris how can i replace my battery cable. The old cable is short. Thank you very much.
Or you could measure the voltage drop between wire terminal and terminal post.
@@rael5469 how would you measure it with a digital multimeter? would i just test the post and the terminal with it on voltage or which setting?

Something to note with battery group models is some have an R suffix. The R models have the positive and negative terminals reversed from the non-R. It's very important to verify your terminal placement.

"Hello sponsors, all my batteries are dead."
"Our truck will be delivering tomorrow"

My ex had a Chrysler Concorde and it was the same thing. Had to remove the right front wheel to change the battery.
19:25 I like how he starts talking quietly so he doesn’t wake up the car

Just a quick tip: For the replacement w/o resetting the car's ECUs - you can also connect any 12V power supply to the terminals or even the cigarette lighter :) It is much easier that the bulky jumper cables and most importantly - you don't have to hurry with the quick removing the cables while quickly touching the terminals.
