The thing I love about your videos is even if you don't need a certain fix, you still tell us how to fix it. It would be so easy for you to skip something because your car doesn't need it, but the fact you tell us the signs and things to try for symptoms your car isn't showing is awesome!

It’s so nice to see Chris genuinely excited when he fixed the car because I have the same reaction when I finally fix something that’s been taking awhile, best feeling ever
I think what really excites him the most, is that using logical deduction and knowledge about how an engine works, and what are the possible failure. Applying theory and getting result, unlike the mechanic which just replaced some random potential failure elements things, is the real reward.
In my case, my 95 4Runner died on me two days ago AIR ✅ Spark ✅ Compression ✅ Timing ✅ (changed my timing belt when I replaced my water pump) Fuel ❌ (checked the fuel rail and wasn’t spraying fuel. Culprit on my case is a bad fuel pump) Thanks for the info Chris

As a non mechanic there's nothing more satisfying as fixing a car yourself. It might take a bit of time and patience but it is truly rewarding for the wallet! This guy's videos shows exactly that.
Chris, it is amazing how much effort you put into these videos. This could have easily been a “how to fix your timing belt” but no you decided to put in the extra effort to show all the symptoms of a non running engine. Simply amazing! Never change man, keep up the amazing work!

After having taken apart and rebuilt a 2.0L Ford Focus motor, I can say that the convenient access to the timing belt tensioner and crank rotation/balancer is the stuff dreams are made of. Wish chain-driven engines could somehow engineer that.
Epic! I did these exact steps on my new E30 Touring last month. It had been sat for 6 years. It was a bad ECU in my case, making only three injectors work. Tested LITERALLY everything before swamping out the ECU. This video is so helpful to someone who doesn't know. Cheers Chris!
So what do you guys think I should do with this car? I have a few ideas in mind like sell it to make money for a supercharger, give it back to the owner (I dont think he wants it tho), sell it and donate the money to charity, build it, find someone who really needs a car badly and give it to them, etc... Any other ideas?
i wonder if I would have been able to figure that out. After fuel pump and spark plugs, timing belt has gotta be up there in what I’d check and I’m a complete noob pretty much.

Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.

Why changing the distributor and the computer? I can understand for the coil maybe he found the spark weak. If it wasn't the timing belt. It could probably be the timing of the spark. For real. The LITERALLY first time I went to a mechanic because I hat misfires, he told me it was most likely the distributor and or sparkplugs. He told me it was difficult to do and all in all would cost me about 300 bucks. Exactly! On most other "how to" videos, I get a couple minutes in, (maybe!) and I've already clicked on to the next one. I just sat through 16 minutes completely interested and content. He should do a "how to" video on "how to 'how to' video" . Wow, that was hard to type, lol.

He said the car was sitting for 4 years so it broke down at least 4 years ago (maybe longer) who knows how long chris has lived there and had worked on cars in the driveway
My mitsubishi wouldnt start at a wendys drive thru, the guys working there gave me a push into the parking lot. Spent an hour trying to figure out the problem, searching up UA-cam videos and then found this. And it worked. Dude thank you so much!
Take it to a mechanic, doesn't get fixed, nobody knows what's wrong. Bring it to ChrisFix, within an hour it's running. Wow, you never fail to impress me dude way to go!
Agreed, I was thinking that the mechanic that had worked on it wasn't very good as soon as the video started. There are a lot of mechanics that are just parts changers, they don't actually diagnose the issue, they just replace parts hoping they replace the right one. I will say that timing can be an easy one to gloss over, because most engines aren't non-interference and the engine grenades if the timing slips. Luckily for this Honda that engine seems to be a non-interference engine and was able to be saved!
Oblivion , Unfortunately, he probably did, but decided to jack up the bill first by doing a bunch of unnecessary work. Sad reality of a lot of people in the industry unfortunately.
The same thing happened to my dad 20+ years ago with a 92 Subaru wagon. He spent at least 4k on repairs and couldn't get it to run. He sold it to a friend of his for 300 dollars because he was sure he was selling a dead car. Next week he saw his friend driving the car and found out a $7 part at the local auto store is all it took. . . . My dad still talks about it today. 😞
I had a leaf blower that sheared a key and got out of timing. That’s one thing a lot of people forget about and throw things away that are still good. Like this car almost got scrapped and it just needed some love. Thanks Chris! Excellent video on diagnosing problems.
@@cipherthedemonlord8057 I agree and disagree. They generally aren't out to rip you off but wind up doing so because they are just parts replacers and not diagnosticians or actual technicians. If you follow the five steps before replacing parts, consider yourself smart hahaha
I towed my Miata to a spec Miata shop when it broke down, to do a timing belt job. They did it wrong, broke my camshaft, and replaced the camshaft wrong too (caps were out of order). They sent the car back to me after 3 months not running, and charged me an arm and a leg for their work. If anybody knows Miatas, it's them, right? Nope, they failed. I took it apart myself and had it running in 2 days. The new cam was unfortunately beyond saving (it was scored to the point that is was binding to the caps even in the right order) and it broke in half on the highway, taking the head with it. I sold the car with a blown motor. What did I learn from that? It's best to work on your own car, Chrisfix style! I don't trust anybody with my cars anymore, so I do everything myself so I know exactly how every nut and bolt on my car was treated.

@@Bodragon right on. He's funny he's like the guy who never shows his face on that TV sitcom ,with the neighbor looking over the fence . Lol. I forgot the name of the sitcom
I've genuinely got a kind of fear about working on my own cars, even though I don't mind repairing electronics. Seeing Chris be so excited, and how logically and plainly he makes everything, it really does inspire me to try. At one point, I did try to change out the oil on my own car, but didn't have the leverage to get the oil plug out. I ended up stripping it and had to go to a mechanic. I've never changed my own oil. I'm hoping that maybe if I keep watching this channel, I can finally give it another shot. I really want to be more responsible with the vechiels that I drive and know how they work.
It might not have been your fault. Sometimes it is so tight on there from other places, it basically traps you. I'd recommend getting a 1/2 inch drive mechanics set, which will help you get way more leverage going forward. Just watch over-tightening it. Don't be discouraged!
Put a wrench on the end it your socket wrench before you try if you need more leverage it basically makes the handle longer causing you to need less effort to turn the bolt but be careful it’s like having super strength lol
@@paulstill3630 Haha, yeah. The place I took it too recommended that after the fact. It was kind of frustrating because some of the material I had read didn't mention that as a possibility. The car place also said a length of pipe could work too. My problem was that I had very little funds and didn't have extra wrenches or tools available that easily. I finally invested in a full wrench set and am going to give it another go after the ground thaws.
@@winterssiege4624 thank you for the kind words! They did mention that most places use air tools, and it might have been "tighter than normal" or something like that. I didn't really have the proper tools at the time, either. I've learned a bit since then. Hopefully my next go turns out better.

@@mrarmy8744 Y'all really don't know what you're talking about and don't know shit about cars, do you? It's pretty freaking simple. Because a mechanic has to provide a warranty. And just by looking under that valve cover, this thing is NOT going to run for a long time, or even run great. It did not have the required oil changes for a long time. That engine needs proper maintenance, what you've seen under the valve cover is a BIG SYMPTOM of a MUCH bigger issue. Imagine how the crankshaft bearings are if the cam and rockers are looking like that. That engine needs a rebuild and thorough clean, at the very least. I expect the bearings won't be looking too good either. He got the engine to run, but he didn't completely fix all of its problems.

What could be the cause of the slack timing?
Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.

I had a misfire code. My mechanic did not check or diagnose spark plug or coil. He replaced parts only. :(

It might not have been your fault. Sometimes it is so tight on there from other places, it basically traps you. I'd recommend getting a 1/2 inch drive mechanics set, which will help you get way more leverage going forward. Just watch over-tightening it. Don't be discouraged!
Wrong size wrench/socket will do that to much leverage and over tightening will as well I think that was you problem
I really like how you break it down so everyone, regardless of their level of knowledge, can understand the problem at hand
After watching this video, a few weeks later I bought the same make\model & year. It helped tremendously, I was able to know what to lo
ok for & how to solve the problem. Chris's videos are phenomenal, informative, to the point,And above all else the camera is not shakey or of bad quality. Myself and I believe tons of other people appreciate what you do. Thanks
did you wear your Chris fix Valeida gloves to?
The fact that I can watch these in my bed, nowhere near my car, and retain the information almost verbatim is actually insane. This guy is an amazing teacher. I can’t wait to go look under my hood tomorrow morning lmao
@random guy on youtube nah, we ended up deducing it was an electrical problem (some rodent got under the hood and chewed someshit) so I had to take it to the dealer to find the wire :(
Mechanic: Charges a lot of money for parts that don’t related to the problem Chris: Finds that problem in a snap, needs not a lot of money to fix. Chris is my mechanic for car problems now.
Should share this video with the guys mechanic..
Or find your better local mechanic 👍🏾
@@Jerry__S Agreed, if he checked things properly he would've found the problem eventually.
@@jarrettembry643 exactly
Jerry Serrano my money is on he was a crook, I hate dishonest mechanics
When I tell you I would have asked this man first before spending a dime! Talking about he saw you working on cars in your front yard. Amazing video!!!! Very informative
I'm going to quit my automotive course and just binge all your videos, I think I'll learn more from your videos than my lecturer who likes to talk about his life.
asdfg hjkl 🤣 so true! I learn more working in a shop and watching cool videos.
lol
asdfg hjkl woah
My instructor would always talk about his life too smh
why would u quit ur automotive course? lol, if u pay attention they teach u more about the science and functions of the vehicle more than videos. Plus it prepares u for ASE certification and the test required for it. Videos like these dont train u or prepare u for working in a real time shop. Yes these vids are helpful but these are mainly DIY
Did i just spent 16 minutes of my life watching a man repair a car? yes and ill do it again
only if it’s ChrisFix!👍🏻
No, it was a video of a man showing you how to repair a car.
Happily, no less.
Hell yeah
i still watch his video because its all knowledge and there is no shitty thing in video
Do a video on how to clean the gunk, replace the things that need to be changed, clean it up a bit, Sell it and Split the money with your neighbor
I'd love to see that video also.
This. As a followup to superclean your engine bay: superclean your actual engine!
And now tell me, how the heck did the professional mechanic end up with changing expensive parts, rather than follow this 5 logical steps to diagnose the problem?!
And that’s why I love this channel: when you DIY you at least got a chance to do it right💪🏼🤪
Because they want money
@@mrarmy8744Would be better to actually fix the problem, too, no? That way the customer comes back?
What surprised me was the fact that despite the context of the guy's car suddenly stopping at a stop light, the mechanic replaces parts which don't go out all at once like that
@@Brody1312 You'd be surprised how often they do this. Sometimes it's just pure ego/hard-headedness in thinking they know better.
lets be honest, it was a Honda so it did like half the work by itself already
Love how this comment is 1 week old and He still gave you heart
Joel Cardoso Thats Chris for you.
DieselJS I think you mean crish... lmao
Well Honda’s never die like my grandpa has a honda from 1960 and he said if it dies I can sell it and it never dies like we went through a fucking lake and it shut off and 30 mins later it started
zeroh what? It’s Chris...
Watched this video because my car wouldn't start, but it would crank, fire and die. Figured out I needed a new fuel pump and a new timing belt! Thanks Chris! You're a lifesaver!
this is one of the best car videos ive ever seen. Hands down
yes true that! Suspense climax everything.
Man i was really excited , Chris fix really nailed this
You’re videos just helped me start my wife’s ‘86 Nissan 300z that’s been sitting in the garage for 10 years.
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
This guy is the man! The way he breaks this down makes it seem somewhat simple. That gold play button is well deserved!
Tell this to your neighbor. Then if he doesnt want it anymore just donate it to some one who doesnt have a car. Thank you for this. I am not scared anymore to check and DIY my first car.
Thanks Chris!
Im from Philippines btw !! TAGAY !!!!
Mindanao area here. Haha
🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Great suggestion
kaibigan
Eyyy Represent pare
Now ChrisFix gets to do the first oil change the car has EVER had.
J Smith no joking. That crust under the value cover is just wow.
So disgusting 🤣
Do you think the same "mechanic" that did his timing belt was also charging him for 3000 miles oil changes?
i think its honda standard or head is leak thats why dirt inside
Who knows how old the oil is, he said the car sat for 4 years and it was probably overdue before that.
I like how you thoroughly explained everything but didn’t over do it. Some videos like this take forever to get through because they over explain and show every painstaking detail. This was edited very well to show what needed to be done but skipped past boring unnecessary steps.
Thanks!
Here’s a good acronym to remember the necessities: Check the FACTS. Fuel, Air, Compression, Timing, Spark.
NICE
Rob Mut I really like that acronym!
Exhaustflow
That would fall under Air
GOOD ONE! This is what they should teach students in schools taking auto mechanic training! Then the students won't forget the basics like this neighbor's mechanic did! Obviously this mechanic who couldn't fix the problem forgot to check the FACTS!! LOL
So i purchased a 2005 mustang with only 5k miles on it. Then i realized i only started looking for one after i watched Chris's Mustang series. And now because of these videos i have started to do things on it my self. Chris has single handedly turned me into a car guy.
Okay nerd
your display picture is your call of duty stats......
That's awesome man, keep up with it. Its tons of fun. But dont get carried away, I ended up spending over 8k on my truck because I loved working on it. :) just enjoy it and have fun
@@theupscale7130 i have already spend like 4k lol too late
DrCray thats not bad
What you could do with the car, is post the car on Craiglist for a trade then after fixing it up, trade it again and again. Would make a really good series.
And somehow works his way up through the car chain lol
Great idea unfortunately for most states make that illegal unless you have a dealership license
Usually it says you can't sell more than like 5 cars a year without a dealer license. Same deal with houses.
In New Jersey there’s no laws that say you can’t buy and sell a certain amount of cars
@@RussellWaldrop trading isn't the same as selling. Also if he would only fix and trade there wouldn't be a need to register them in the first place.
