I kinda love that the custodes Shit on the dark angles on the jetbike thing, like, they've stayed in a golden palace full of ancient technology for ten millenia. If someone has flying bikes would be them.

Well, the Sagittarum Guard's helmets look perfect for a kitbash for the Paladins of Virtue (enforcers type of thing) for my homebrew chapter called the Celestial Paladins
This is just what I needed right now, I'm considering starting a custodes army myself and using this quarantine to begin such a massive project.
HAHAHAHA. Custodes, he says. A massive project, he says. Dude, Custodes struggle to field more than 2 dozen models in a 2k game.
Kieran Cooper 2 dozen? My Competitive Custodes list is 13 units with a total of.......13 models. 6 tanks and 7 characters.
buy yourself some aquilons with the adrathatic destructors and you'll struggle to field over a dozen models lol
I recently started collecting and playing Custodes casually and they are a lot of fun to build, paint and play.
Assembling the spear wielding models can be kind of annoying because of the hands being stuck on the weapon parts, making fitting them onto the models kind of finicky, but the rest are generally very easy to assemble. There's rarely much in the way of mold lines and most parts just fit nicely together.
Painting them is generally a blast, at least if you don't opt for an overly complicated color scheme.
They're easy to paint without many inaccessible spots, take well to dry brushing and there's not a whole lot of extraneous detail to worry about as the ornate armour more than makes up for any lack of pouches, interfaces etc. as is typical on ex. Space Marine models.
Alternate color schemes to gold also work pretty well on them, though generally it can be difficult coming up with anything that's not just a different color of base armour.
I've painted mine gunmetal/silver with varying plumes/cloth secondary colors depending on the unit (Custodian Guard with bone plumes, Vertus Praetors with dark burgundy secondary colors and Allarus Custodians dark metal armour with brown secondary colors) and it works pretty well - because the models themselves are quite distinct, varying color schemes across units is pretty easy without it looking out of place.
Playing them is a bit of a nail-biter though. Either they do extremely well or they get completely trashed at the behest of the dice gods.
An entire army with 2+ to hit, Toughness 5, 2+ save and 4++ invulnerable saves is just going to frustrate your opponent to no end if you roll well, while, on a bad day, you'll be in tears with every failed roll as each model lost is a severe blow to your army due to loss of firepower and board presence.
I've enjoyed them a lot so far and can definitely recommend them if you enjoy a super-elite, super-bonkers, balls-to-the-wall type of army.
Anything to spare me from thinking about how I'm going to work from home while the schools are closed and the grand parents are in isolation...

I painted my basic Custodes guard metal/silver with bone plumes and teal gems and it looks pretty damned good. =)

I love the lack of skulls in the range, they go all in for the imperial eagle. Like some sort of Golden Throne denial happening backstage.
Gyrfalcon is the name of the jetbike, Agamatus is the name of the squadron. "Charging across the battlefield on heavily armoured Gyrfalcon pattern Jetbikes, Agamatus squadrons are tasked with hunting down threats to the main Legio Custodes force and destroying fleeing enemy units."
I know it's been over a year now, but somehow I found my way here and I burst out laughing in the beginning when he says Trajann needs a fancy helmet with a giant plume. That's literally what I made for mine! - a greenstuff plume longer than his whole body. Because the fanciest lad needs the fanciest of plumes!! :D

Great timing! I just started painting up a kill team of these golden gents, and I am most likely destined to build a full army out of them. Also, I've been a shut-in all week so it's nice to feel a bit connected to the outside world.

I would very much like to hear your opinion what's missing on each and every faction at the moment. Only when it's discussed in the community the ideas of people will travel and reach GW at some point and when that's the case they will discuss it internally so that we might be able to get some of our desires fulfilled.
My personal opinion (even if I don't have a Custodes army so far)
On the positive side the modells are mostly very beauftiful and representing the lore very okay on the table. You are able to soup them very well with Space Marines, Imperial Guard or Sisters of Battle.
The huge problem I have with Custodes is that the pure range of modells is to small (even smaller without Foregworld). Two pages of modells on the homepage .... of which most are very simillar to each other. So you are basicly forced to play a soup if you don't want to filed nearly the same army every time.
In the furture I would like to expend them with some Jumpy-Dudes, maybe a shooty option for the guards/wardens.
Some kind of human guard soldiers in addition would be awesome as well ... like cultists for CSM.
Furhter nobody comes out as a full custodes right away. What's with a "scout-type" of troop choice ?
More eccentric would be some kind of guard robots / servitors, but they would fit in as well to expend the range.
Of course you could grap something from the Space Marine range like some kind of Stormraven or Rhino, even if I would whish for they gettring their own stuff.
Please see this as an discussion starter in the community. What do you want to have / see for Custodes in the future ?
My biggest point of critisism is ... there is no start collecting box. GW should definitly set one up in the future. Maybe as an compelte overhall of all start collecting boxes .... but this is a completly different topic and I will spare me the ramble of this here and now.

I know it doesn‘t give the same range as some other start collecting boxes but with the ten man set custodes set you get 1 hq and 3 troop choices for 90€
I love this because it helps people see all the choices they have before deciding to invest in a new army!

The Venatari lack a helmet, but if you cut down the plume and eagle on the helmet of a Vertus Praetor, it fits really well with the model, and if you put the heads side by side, the half mask design of the venatari looks like it is cut down version of the Vertus Praetor
I am not one personally for playing Space Marines, but if I did, it would be these guys. If the God-Emerpor ever DID come out, he'd be a part of this legion as well and I'd love playing with him.

id love to see custodes painted with that faux shiny plated gold paint, the kind you get reflection from. mini gold paint is so gritty.
Painting my 30K Custodes atm ;) really like the Aquilon terminators and Galatus dred going to get an Ares guns ship at some point, its too awesome.
The gyrfalcon bike is the same as the agamatus but with a bigger gun (aka custodes grav attack bike)

A Corona is a crown which is where the cornus carrier gets its name and the coronaviruses (which includes the common cold) get it's name from the same term but it refers to their structure.
Funny that you mention the Judge Dredd vibes, because that's the reason I decided to build Custodes: I'm gonna give them a custom paint job based on Dredd.
Those baby tanks look like the racers in Star Wars Episode One if it found place in the Warhammer universe.

I own the Orion dropship and am currently in the process of painting my 2nd ares. Sounds like a brag but you wouldn't think that if you saw my credit card bills lol the kits are not that bad to assemble. Not the best but definitely not the worst (looking at you decimators) lol great fun to paint too as they're so big it's easier to get any shading or highlights in. Overall I'd really recommend them.......just as long as you dont need money for food something.

I can attest as a crap painter they are super easy and since they're not common in my area people run over to look at them and compliment the look of them. The dreds all are a pleasure to build. I did have a bit of trouble on the chassis of the coronus but the callidus is like 9 pieces total and super simple. I had an orion come in right before the crazyness started and haven't gotten together with my buddy who was going to help me pin the wings but the chassis is massive and feel like it weighs 6 pounds by itself. With the new PA rules i can't wait to dust them off and actually try out the golden deathwing terminator spam that buddies of mine said would never be viable.
I can’t wait for the Talons of the Emperor book, hoping the Sisters of Silence get their unique transport for use in 40k alonngside these fellas.

I definitely didn't need convincing to buy more Custodes. Love the models, love the lore, and love that they can go with sisters of silence!!!
Just getting back into the game and into this faction and honestly i do really like most the models. Well i hate how expansive they are i do love the fact that pretty much any box you buy is set you go, yea you can add more to a unit but it really isn't needed either. It brings a nice balance for once.
I personally prefer the bikes (looks wise) of the forgeworld variant more, Gonna have to see how the rules compare them what makes them different? so i know which fit better with how i wanna play.
Super Soldiers not wearing helmets is also an issue of mine, all three of my space marine armies (minus scouts) contain zero helmet-less marines. Big E didn't clad you in the finest armor for you not to freakin wear it.
While I do not own one, a friend of mine has an Ares gunship, I just helped with the assembly and the painting. The model is gorgeous but assembly is a pain, mostly because the way forge world work with their moulds. The entire cockpit area had slipped in the mould so it had a deep gouge around it, all of the wings were warped the barrel of the gun on the front was so filled with holes I thought I'd looked at the picture wrong online and it had cooling pipes or something. After doing some fixing, giving up on it and getting forge world to send us new bits to work with because it should never have been sold like that, it looked pretty good in the end. Still, I'm never buying one myself.
If I ever get the Captain General I am going to try and put a normal Custodes helmet on him.

This is wonderful, I absolutely love the adeptus custodes, but I've always found that I enjoy the forge world custode dreads more then the ones they toss at you in GW, rest of the range is nice though~

These kits look great for conversions too. The Guard look like they could make for great Primaris conversions with just a head swap 🤔
I love my Custodes!! The range is beautiful as a whole.
Those feathers on General Valoris look more like the swords of the Isengard Uruk-Hai, than anything that came from a bird.
I’ve seen a Custodes army painting silver with blue trim and I might actually like that better...
I've got a custody army sitting in boxes, after I finish my admech their next...well until I get Ghazghul.
I agree that some of the Custodes helmets are a bit much even for the Custodes... like it’s hard to pick out the eyes and stuff from a distance.

you can make a shield captain and banner beare out of both kits custodes kits. the main difference is definitely weapons. spears and axes vs spears and sword n board
Loving these series of range reviews. Totally agree with the hats not looking right on the wardens. For me it’s like they are wearing unnecessary conical hat extensions on top of the normal helm. It just doesn’t look right
I really hate the Custodes head. I gave mine eagle heads, because talons of the emperor and personally I love using the army painter "Greedy Gold" over the citadel paint range.
I'm same as you mate, Never really liked models without the helmet. Always prefer a helmet when possible
The Valerian head in the packet is different to the one on GW website
tbh I would have absolutely no problem with you fielding those jetbikes as regular bikes... rule of cool.
The head is actually just fine IRL.
Valerian's head looks like it was photo edited on by a 5 year old child and increased in size by 50% more than what it should be.
I actually prefer the warden helm to the normal guard one, maybe because it looks more triangular and not like a column.
I have this dumb idea in my head of a nurgalite custodes with a 'coronas' grav carrier. ;)
in other news: those Sagittarum heads would look *amazing* as high ranking hussar heads...
