Each Legion has their own traditions. Therefore, saying that each Astartes goes through a mind wipe is not entirely correct but nonetheless, it is a good generalisation. Also, there are various ways to mind wiping. Chemical, cutting parts of the brain, magically~using psychers and/or (multiple bashes to beat the brain out of the skull and then to keep them alive after reformatting the brain functions who are then known as Servitors to humans or as Art pieces and decorations for Dark Elves). ~All Grey Knights would go through mind wiping bcz its in their indoctrination. While Custodes live upto centuries minimum and many times choose to mind wipe themselves voluntarily. ~But Salamanders(SM) are known to avoid it. Some memories are suppressed in cases perhaps but these are outlier cases. They are the most Human of all Legions. SM are known to visit their families & friends and are known to value each human life as precious. They would go to huge lengths to ensure the safety of civilians even before their own lives. This is a key principle in SM traditions as enshrined by their great Primarch Vulcan (who is missing but not dead). ~Dark Angels exclusively mind wipe all aspirants. This is just prelude to the challenges of Caliban (which are derived from the Lion's own struggles in conquering his beloved planet and hunting the Calibaninte megabeasts). Also, almost all DA recruits which fail the challenges get converted into Servitors. This is bcz DA do not trust other humans with their secrets. Most mind wiping is done through chemicals (but given DAs advanced tech, mind wiping machines might just be an option too. Remember nobody truly knows the secrets of DA, not even their own). ~Blood Angels have the blood tradition bcz of their gene seed characteristics. Also, as dictated by the Emperor's Angelic son, Sanguinius himself, all BAngels have to strive for Excellence in Arts, Music, culture so as to avoid the side effects of their genetic mutation. And thus, they usually do not mind wipe themselves in their later years. The recruits which pass are mostly mind wiped to a certain extent usually with a Librarian presideling over the ceremony. They do not lose their personality however, in cases, they might have to learn to read and write again and start just as a toddler would.
Yep, thank you for leaving this explainer i appreciate it. The video had to be made with the idea of "how do i say this and not be wrong but include as much as possible" . Otherwise as im sure you know. It would be like 5 hours long.
00:49 The other reason why they're blessing their weapons is for the very real existence of sorcery, psychic powers, daemons and magic. All parts of their arms and armor are blessed by Chaplains and Sanctioned Psykers in the belief that it will repel the ruinous powers of such malevolent beings that may make their armory either fail, be ruined or just doesn't work. So yeah, those automaton psykers that they fought can by all means twist their guns if they choose too - only that they are unable to do so thanks to the little blessings and preparations the Astartes's weapons received. Its a small detail but VERY important in the lore of the setting.
A crazy detail is that when our “Hero” is teleported and pukes blood, it IMMEDIATELY starts to clot. This is super lore accurate and is also the reason why when a Space Marine loses a limb he kind of just takes it like someone would a punch and keeps on killing. So much attention was paid to the lore in this it’s mindblowing. Long Live the Emperor of Man, Beloved by All!
Yeah, I wish this explanation video had noted that, because I feel like that's definitely a question 40K-uninitiated viewers would ask about the blood, since it looks strange.
You probably should have mentioned that these rebels (or whatever they are) are actually doing a great job at trying to stop the astartes. Yes, they are just getting slaughtered but they do employ the best tactics possible for a regular human to try and actually kill an astartes if you don't have acces to tanks. Try to get him into a kill zone and focus fire him, preferably with heavy weapons or just a shitload of soldiers. And yes, it's totally worth sacrificing the guys that led him into the kill zone because if they didn't fire immedietly the astartes would likely notice the ambush (even through thermal smoke) and either evade or just crush the ambush. The other viable tactic is to distract the astartes somehow and then get a soldier to do a suicide run to try and attach a very large preferably shaped explosive device to the astartes armor and detonate it immedietly. These tactics are viable to kill an astartes. And while those seem easy, they absolutly are not. The problem is that astartes don't just have superhuman strength, speed, endurance, reflexes etc and the absolut best equipment that is possible to have, each one of them is also a tactical and strategic genius. And as if that still wasn't enough, all of them underwent a training regime whose warm up exercises would just straightup kill any normal human. Not to mention astartes are pretty much immortal if not killed in battle and as such many have centuries of experience in nothing but combat and war against enemies and creatures that few have ever even just heard of. If you are a military commander and you are expected to go up against Astartes you should treat them as tanks but with the manoveurability of infantry and the modus operandi of special ops.
You can use intelligent tactics, you can have overwhelming numbers, you can have a home-field advantage, you can have a superior position...the Space Marines will still accomplish their objective, because that is all they live for. Beyond all the genetic enhancement and top-tier equipment, an Astartes, at his core, has been systematically brainwashed and mentally conditioned to regard achieving his goal as the only thing that's important. He doesn't have doubts, he doesn't have a 'girl back home' that he's thinking about, he can't be shocked or traumatized, he isn't afraid to die, he _certainly_ won't blink at killing the enemy...and he's been trained for years to instinctually know the best tactics to use in any given situation. The true strength of a Space Marine is his resolve and willpower. There are things that can defeat Space Marines, and regular humans with no artillery or air support? They are not those things.
My theory it is a daemonworld, a world pulled into the Warp from realspace that doesn't follow the material universe's rules any longer. Also, travel through the Warp leads to issues with time as we know it. Seconds could be centuries in realspace and vice versa. Hell, you could go full time-paradox and go back in time before you left upon exiting. An ork warboss did just that and searched for his past self to kill so he could have two of his favorite gun. He did just that with no issues because he was too stupid to realize the signifigance of it.

On his patreon, the creator has stated that these are nobles from the rebelling planet with augments to enhance their psyker abilities (they are not as powerful as we saw them without their augments). Also their masks they're wearing are ceremonial.
@SordidusFellatio It didn't want to help them. The orb was a high level psyker, and to demons, they're basically a wagyu steak. The demons ate that orb and it just happens to release the space marines from it.
@@BlackViperMWG That orb-entity probably lit itself up like a beacon in the Warp and immediately drew the attention of a stronger, hungry warp entity that just devoured it.
@Peniley Majorey In the scene where the Inquisitor is in space and the two orbs are communicating. He has a distinct smoky aura compared to the Warp Entities Sapphire blue. In the scene where the Astartes are in the warp being held by the Warp Entities tentacles a similar smoky force doesn't so much shoot the Sapphire blue Warp Entity as it does engulf and consume. Stands to reason that if the Inquisitor had lost his body and was now stuck in Warp space that he could as some final act of glorious service save the Marines. Possibly they all only ended up in that vast place because of the Inquisitor. Otherwise they may have been trapped in the Warp. And if you are wondering what I mean by 'they all' I urge you to watch the last few seconds very closely. Particularly the other pillars in the 'throne room.'
I love watching analysis of Astartes. Everyone manages to catch something different. I never noticed all the unused skulls in the room with the big construct before.
Personal addition for anyone wondering: The background story is that humanity spread out through the Galaxy over the course of several thousands of years, then by the 25th millenia, developed psychic powers (leading to possesions that killed entire solar systems) and the AIs we used to make things run went full Skynet. In the 30th millenia, the most powerful human psychic proclaimed himself Emperor of Mankind and made the Astartes as his shock troops to reclaim the galaxy. To run the show, he made 20 super Astartes called Primarchs, which the 4 Satans stole and spread out through the Galaxy. As the Emperor reclaimed the Galaxy he found 18 of them. When he was close to reconquering the Galaxy, his best Primarch got possesed and, with the help of 8 other Primarchs (many of whom ended up possesed too), started a Civil War that left the Empire in shambles. Eversince then, the Astartes have fought to preserve what remains and most of the stories of the setting happen in the 41st millenia.
Thank you for this. I’m really starting to get into the 40K universe since the release of Darktide. I’m hoping to start reading the books soon, but it’s so hard to figure out where to start. This video is a great jumping off point.
The most devastating thing about the Emperor's Angels of death is not the fact they are 9 feet tall weigh 600-900 pds if pure muscle, not that they have 9 or 12 new organs planted inside of them including two hearts, not that they can fight for months without true sleep (half their brain will sleep while the other half is awake and fully combat effective, not the strength of speed that makes Captain America seem like a child in comparison, he'll it's not even that they can eat inorganic matter to sustain themselves or eat parts of the recently dead to gain their memories, NOT EVEN BEING ABLE TO SPIT ACID. What makes them such a force of nature is in the way these sons of Demigods move as one. That's what this creator got spot on. It is not about the individual, it is all about the unit or team. They act and think as one making them unstoppable juggernauts of The Throne! The Emperors wrath made manifest.
@8 bit Romania I got into it by reading the books initially and just looking at the fractions lore on warhammer wiki. Just recently I started painting models. I don't think I will play , but the painting is very relaxing.
Those Astartes are clearly Grey Knights, the fighting force of the Chapter of the Ordo Malleus of the Inquistion who specialize in hunting daemons and chaos creatures. Their rather plain, silver-grey armour is pretty iconic. It explains how they could so easily shake off the psychic attacks, as the Grey Knights are usually psykers themselves.
I cant wait to see this animators take on primary and specialist astarties like death watch, gray knights, custodies, primary marines, etc. Or even primearchs as we all know Lionel Johnson is back in the fold now
Those angels strength is their fanbase. More doesn't make better, they act slow, under powered * and let's face it any puking human SPITS ACID * if you want a VO2 max of a horse you need the head of a horse
One should not forget, that the Inquisitor that was communicating with the orb, was probably the highest ranking officer on that ship. A human inquisitor's authority is above most Astartes and can command them to do as he wants. Basically they are untouchable.... unless turning to demon due corruption.
@Peniley Majorey yeah thats a bit confusing. But i remember somewhere i read that even the grey knights answer to some inquisitiors. However it is so that any inquisitor is above all other non inquisitors in the imperium.
For those wondering what the Warp entities are saying: Inquisitors orb - "Who is there?" Strike Team orb - "I am here, brother. We have all failed." Inquisitors orb - "The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal." Strike Team orb - "Impossible. We'll never survive" Inquisitors orb - "You.must.take.them" Inquisitor - "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY" I would like to think that the Inquisitor warning the Chapter Master to recall his men caused his lapse in focus, ultimately giving away his presence to the Warp entities, who had no idea he was eavesdropping, and thus causing him to become possessed. Another thing to note, we could almost hear the Inquisitor through his helmet warning the Chapter Master, which could imply he was literally screaming at the top of his lungs since they all communicate through internal comms. I like to think the Inquisitor and the Chapter Master were well acquainted with one another, each fully expecting the other to fulfil their duty to the very end. That confidence the Inquisitor had to warn the Chapter Master, knowing full well possession was guaranteed, but simultaneously knowing the Chapter Master would not hesitate to “free him” from possession is why I believe the Inquisitor was able to push himself to the limit, disconnect the harness tying him to the Warp entity’s orb and holding it until his soul literally burned away inside of him, until the Chapter Master and his Captain swiftly and mercifully ensured his expiry. ONE FOR DISCUSSION - @16:55 I like to imagine that the black smoke that seemingly attacked the Warp entity was in fact the soul of the Inquisitor “returning the favour” and giving the surviving Astarte(s) a chance.
Didn't Syama Pedersen confirm that the black smoke was actually a Daemon that saw the orb in the warp and just ate it instantlly hence why it said "we'll never survive"
4:38 - Most wouldn't notice that the Astartes hidden within the shadows is preparing to point his gun on those two guys ambushing his brothers until you hear the "BANG BANG" sound of his bolter gun. What a great little detail.
Holy shit, I thought that was the Astartes in hallway that opened a door into the dark room and shot them but you are correct. The amount of details to make this perfection is astounding, I truly believe that it is basically impossible to make a better warhammer 40K video from now on based on this.
@@007999999999999999 I wouldn't even notice it if someone hadn't pointed it out in the comments section of the original vid. If that person didn't bother pointing it out, I would be unaware of that extra tiny detail sitting there.
It is kind of hillarious that in a situation where in many other movies some agile little monster would ambush out of the tight dark corridor here we have a 2,5m large, metric tons heavy (with armour) superhuman killer machine sneaking up to them. A small reminder that Space Marines have surprising stealth qualities.
13:25 my interpretation of this is that the spikes are a neutralizing agent, meant to weaken the orb so that a bigger team can enter the ship and capture it like the other orb. I believe that the orb panics and reaches out, finding the other orb (thats tied to the psychic) close by and communicates, which is how the psychic intercepted the messages. Following this the other orb says it failed and is captured, so the orb we just found prepares to do the sucking in attack thing, the psychic hears this and tells the captain (or whatever rank) to "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY", and in this moment of broken focus the captured orb attacks the psychic, trying to break the connection and maybe give the other orb a chance. We see the psychic lose the mental battle, essentially lose his mind from possession (its not pretty in 40k), and the 2 higher ranking officials swiftly put him down. I also believe that the tentacles were the orb's power, and the black magic shadow thing that hit it was a final attack from the psychic (it's the same as the power we see from his hands when he looks down), which cuts off the orb and casts the captured Astartes randomly about the cosmos.
also it's my understanding that the humans on board are being controlled by the orb, which is why a) the Astartes have little remorse killing them (possession has non-reversible damage), and b) why they are trying to capture the orb in the first place. To prevent it from capturing further ships or perhaps even fleets.
Pretty good summary in my opinion. The psyker attacking the orb in the warp in a last stand kind of thing didn’t really cross my mind until you and others pointed it out in these comments. Adds a lot of personality and character to him whereas i just saw him as some weird dude just getting taken over by demons. A lot of details in this video that takes multiple viewings to see.
Nice theory , I was guessing blackstone injectors. Unfortunately think the inquisitor psyker was devoured when his face lit up (comparably to how the Emperor feeds) and the black wispy smoke I believe denotes humanoid psyker energy. So, my hope is it was the Emperor that blasted the entity and saved as well as transported his blessed Astartes to his realm in the immaterium with his fractured self(how he became the corpse on the throne wuth that many iterations), because as they say, "and they shall know no fear" and you know most importantly "the Emperor protects".
I thought little of that psyker in the presence of the Astartes before I knew what he did. But after knowing, mad respect. No hesitation. Just goes for it.
I love how they show little to no recoil when firing even bolters, after all they are super humans. It always struck me as odd how a Halo Spartan can flip a tank but cannot control the recoil of a SMG.
@@ddjohnson9717 he hasn't full control of his limbs in this scene. i think they have no problem to control recoil with just one hand atleast for a Boltpistole
[Edit] Syamada Pedersen the creator said these are the actual lines: "...no escape. I have failed brother." 'We have all failed. The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal." "Impossible, (I) will never survive." "You must! Take them!" [/edit] My own interpretation was: - Who's there? - I have failed, brother. - We have all failed. - The astartes defy our touch. - We must return. Break your seal. - That's impossible, we'll never survive. - We must, take the offer.
The animator did an AMA on reddit ages ago…he regretted not putting in subtitles! The orb says: “You must. Take them.” As in: ‘You must’ - break your seal. ‘Take them’ - kidnap the thic bois surrounding you and take ‘em with you. That’s when the inquisitor turns to the veteran fella and says “recall them immediately” - it’s really muffled though. Hope that helps
That makes a lot of sense. With what happens to them after the speech. These orbs are psychics so they have a deep connection to the warp. My bet is they have a deal with one of the demons, a sort of pact to rise against the astartes. In the intro the rebels are described as being defeated. So they are being rounded up one by one. This isn't the first incursion, look at how methodically they proceed in the capture. You look at the spikes they repel the blue psychic aura, my guess is it's a way to restrain them. The captured one has metal bulges like shackles moving around it, disposed in a similar way. The captured orb senses the other's presence and asks who's there. The strike orb then tells him the bad news. Captured ponders about the refusal of the astartes to yield. Then orders his brother to return (to the warp for me). The strike orb then indicates the impossibility since it's too much of a risk for them (probably because they'll have to face the demon and say they failed, that or the huge dangers lying in the warp. I would go for the latter) But the captured indicates how desperate they are and that they have no choice. They must take the offer. (This might be linked to some ultimatum imposed by the demon) What happens next is the process of going to the warp and the marines are taken along. Once in the warp the orb creature gets attacked because nobody is your friend in the warp... The enemy of my enemy is... Well who cares in the warp...
Additional Explanations for the uninitiated: 7:26 The armor Asatrets wear is a product of approximately 20000 years of development, it's almost the most sophisticated and advanced piece of equipment humanity knows, it's the reason why those half-a-ton things can actually still be stealthy. 8:26 The "seals of purity" as they are called are just one manifestation of how Empire protects itself from the warp. In 40k if enough ppl believe in it it becomes real, regardless if it's even logical. Imperium believes that all this skull-flled gothic architecture and purity seals actually ward off chaos, therefore chaos actually makes it work, therefore empire uses chaos to ward of chaos... More or less. 17:46 His blood instantly coagulating isn't part of him being in Hell, it's actally what's happenming to their blood in real world. Astartes blood is supplied with extra hyper-platelets that cause a near-instant coagulation upon injury. This means you can cut off an Astarte's Hand, cavitate their chests and still they'll be able to fight for some time, they are trained to ignore pain. 17:50 That wasn't overkill of a reaction, Those guys think and process mental stuff and input faster than a regular human does, their senses are improved beyond our scope. it also relates to the secene at 15:22 Those look like trained reflex reactions but they are actually mentally processed decisions.
I'm pretty sure that the location represented at the end of the film is the Astronomican, or rather its warp-side presence. It is a bright pillar of golden light created by corpses on thrones. My assumption is that the Emperor intervened to break the hold of the warp entity that trapped the marines, dragging at least one of them to a safe place within the warp. The multiple skeletons represent the fragmentation of the Emperor's psyche within the warp, or maybe the only way that a human can perceive the Emperor's presence within the warp.
I also just wanna say the comment section is glorious, this has to not only be the coolest universe I've come across, but the fanbase has to be the icing and cherry on top, a lot of you guys are awesome and talk as if you've basically lived it.

I’m pretty new to WarHammer, but there’s one thing I’ve noticed that I like a lot. Multiple times you say, “we don’t know for sure.” There could be multiple answers that are all just as possibly correct. It’s an indication of a great sense of mystery and sprawl in this fictional universe. George RR Martin has talked about this being a key aspect of writing fiction. I also think this used to be a big piece in Halo prior to the 343 industries taking over the franchise. Since then much of the mystery in Halo has disappeared and almost everything now has an explanation or is over explained. Leaving the fans with the ability to speculate is a big part in developing a fan culture where people can theorize together. And it doesn’t matter whether or not they are right. It just matters that people are actively thinking and discussing your franchise (in a good way).
I agree. I love that they do this and a few folks really hate it cause they "HAVE TO KNOW" lol. But not knowing is part of the fun. I always tell people when it comes to fanfiction or theorizing about 40k. It's a lot like the goldy locks position of a habitable planet. You don't want to be too close to the sun or too far away. To little liberty with it and it will contradict itself (this is done on purpose by the 40k writers btw.) To far and your not talking about 40k anymore. So know what is relevant to the universe and don't venture too far, and you're good.
@@TBiscuitsmx5 Elder Scrolls isn't obscure like that. Achieve CHIM and boom you know the world is in a tower and you are a dream. Shit 40k isn't even that obscure, Humans good, xenos bad. Judging by the shape of the craft and the melta's firing from the top, it was probably a Caestus Assault Ram rather than a Boarding Torpedo. The later look more like TBM's with a rocket at the back.
That's what I thought when I first watched it go in years ago but it's more likely a take on a Shark Assault Boat the Caestus Assault Ram is just so much larger than what we see but does have a very similar method of both approach & breaching in application.
7:04 I like to believe that this astartes fired his plasma pistol into the psyker’s shield as a way to create a smoke screen, impairing his enemy’s view to give himself more of a chance of breaking through
Not all Astartes minds are wiped. In the Novel "The Emperor's Gift", When asking the female Inquisitor what tribe she's from, he tells her he still remembers them to this day. Also another Wolf Lord found out that an large band of Trolls were rampaging through his former clans homeland killing his people and he went there to fight with them
@@Zaketh_ Salamanders still interact with their families even when Space Marines, they visit them and stuff IIRC, its in part why they are the most 'human' of Space Marine chapters and value human life. Blood Angels also don't have their minds wiped, even Dante who is nearly 1500 years old still remembers himself as a boy. The rituals and processes of how each chapter creates new marines varies a lot chapter to chapter.
The only chapter I can think of that actively mind wipes there recruits is the Dark Angels. If they did actively mind wipe recruits then a large portion of the Heresy wouldn’t of happened. But one important thing to mention is that there is a heavy amount on mental indoctrination with modern Space Marines. The Imperium doesn’t want another Rebellion of marines but mind wiping every recruit is a bit to much effort with to little reward.

At 4:39 look closely at the sniper who's killed. That wasn't some random Astarte' that killed him. That's one of the guys he was shooting at. That's how fast they're.
Just casually sprints through a corridor with a literal ton of weight on his body, within 2 seconds to get a sniper than doesnt even damage their armor in the slightest.
is it tho? We see 3 astartes running through corridor. Not 5. 2 got shot at and 1 stopped. Where the last 2? It's more likely, that they split up. 3 run through corridor, 1 goes to kill that gunner and another is doing some covering.
Heres my take on that place the space marine found himself in at the end. I think it’s the realm of the emperor. Each chaos god has their own realm of chaos and the emperor stole power from the chaos gods and has likely become a chaos god himself, so it would be fitting that he has his own realm, where the space marine found himself inside. Also, the emperor’s psyche became shattered into a lot of different pieces of himself, so seeing all those skeletons on thrones makes me think that it’s the scattered bits of himself within his realm. He’s known to occasionally reach out and save people like the sisters of battle or influence battles to turn them into victories, it’s not far fetched that he would save one of his Astartes from the warp by bringing him into his own realm.
The orbs were most likely Umbra - a Xenos species The devices the Astartes stabbed the orb with were most likely not communication devices, but more likely psychic suppressors - they just were not strong enough The Inquisitor threaded extremely dangerous grounds...only an Inquisitorian Psycher would have been skilled and strong enough to try this task Although he got overwhelmed when the two Umbra conjuncted Nonetheless its highly likely the entity that did disrupt the warp entities (all likely Umbra) was the spirit of the Inquisitor - sacrificing himself to intervene The Emporer protects!
The only thing that would have me think it may be the C'Tan and not the Umbra is the ending. What do the Umbra have to do with a structure littered with giant, dead humanoid figures?
@@adrikubel the umbra are orbs whjch are incredibly psyonically gifted They manipulate the warp so why would it be surprising that they teleport beings through the warp? Ctan are...possible...but ctan are just shards (form can differentiate of course) but ctan shards are MUCH more powerful than those orbs...
Imo the dark stuff could be the remnants of the aura after the psyker died. But you can see the marine trying to get his bearings he looks at his hands, looks around and suddenly the black stuff disappears and the entity is visible and it is instsntly shot. So imo it was one of the marines that shot it. They can be that fast and accurate and they never give up
From what I know, the Umbra are not particularly strong psychically, though they match the orbs closely in physical traits. More likely, these are Yu’Vath. They are immensely powerful, and are known to control several worlds each. They are particular towards enslavement.
My guess is those spheres are Psychic Spheres of The Yu'Vath. An artefact from the old empire Yu Vath, who were around the year 39 M. The spheres has self awareness, a techno-warp device.
Also fun fact: the suits of armor the Space Marines wear are technically just suped up biohazard suits from the Dark Age of Technology. Can't even imagine what the actual combat suits from that period were like.
This sounds like the "Terminator armour was just radiation suits from DAoT" misinfo applied generally to the Astartes Power Armour as a whole. Astartes power armour could be as good as souped up DAoT biohazard suits, who knows, but I'm pretty sure we know that they were made beginning with the Thunder Warrior's Thunder patter armor.
One thing I love specifically about Warhammer 40k that many other fictional universes/mythos aren’t known for is the cosmic horror aspect. The last scene for example, where the marine ends up in some random place filled with gigantic skeletons on thrones is so fucking cool and cosmic horror like

Hmm this was good one. I had heard some good theories of the psykers as for the orbs. For the psykers the mask and hoods where some kind of psy hoods to help focus their powers and the two being bonded psykers, as they both had upposite hands bound (kinda connected sacrifice). Making the stronger by sharing their power and able to react to each others actions better. As for the spheres one good theory that those are Yu'wath origins as that was xeno empire on north west portion of the galaxy known of their very powerful psykick powers and heavy warp based technology.
You can actually see the connection between the psykers when the first one dies. The spine coming out of the hood of the second sparks and he loses the focus/strength to keep the astartes away... and died as a result.
@@KeyClavis Aye the spine and the mask might be part of the bond. But all so they where not normal humans beingabout as large as marines themselves and not forgeting the shock batton one literally swated the second marines pistol off like nothing.
I think it's pretty established that some variance is a accepted but the general really clearly defined rule is that all aspirants under go extreme mental conditioning or indoctrination to facilitate higher acceptance rates of the more demanding aspects of becoming a full Astarte. Some ofcourse go full off the wall warrior priest been little more then human supremacist zealots looking at you Black Templars! The two chapters you brought up are the extreme edge cases the Salamanders actively support their members retaining blood relations or even families as they believe it makes them better at protecting the Emperors great works. While the Space Wolves have a much different belief system around psycho conditioning and especially Librarians that doesn't align with moving away from your roots or tribalism. They instead where possible harness it and just that competition as an edge. That said they also try to get drunk sooooopp yeah....... 😅
@DanielVisOneCade well Salamanders even have Astaetes living within their family members communities. - totally unheard of in other chapters. It's like being taken as 10 year old to be space marine and then one day come back to your town "Hey Mom and Dad! I am home on leave, except I became 8 ft tall giant with pure muscle mass and extra organs, looking like mix of human and medieval draft horse".
At the end where it zooms out after he pukes, you can see small flashes on the other "pillars" in the distance of the other retributers teleporting in. Each small flash lined up with the drums of the soundtrack. Neat detail~
6:11 Fun little detail. Up to this point the Bolters have been firing in semi-auto, and here you can see the Astartes switch his Bolter from semi to full auto.

That last scene after going through the warp is definitely inspired by, one of Zdzisław Beksiński's pieces. I'm not accusing this amazing CGI artist of stealing, just pointing out an amazing inspiration made manifest.

The spheres are Necron Dolmen gateways which are living stone portals into the webway, and these gates each contain a shard of Nyadra'zatha, the Burning One, who showed the Necron how to make them. The two gates are basically bits of the same being telling itself to pull the Astartes into the webway, but something powerful manages to take it out and break its hold, sending them to who knows where, probably a Necron world lost to time.
I think the orb is old Yu'Vath tech used as a portal to the warp. Also why the praying guy ( inquisitor ) got killed is because a possessed psyker can not only kill you and everyone else in your party, but the entire ship, depending on the psykers powers. Demons can use their full potential. If an inquisitor suspects that there may be a possessed person on a planet, they may decide to destroy the entire city och even end all life on the planet just to neutralize the threat. And he doesnt say take the alpha. Its "who is here* -*i have failed* -*brother, we have all failed, the astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal* -*Impossible!* -*we'll never survive* -*we'll never die* -*you must. Take them

I’m blown away by what UA-cam has done for the 40K fan base, been there since the beginning 87, I was 11. It was just me and my five friends and we, especially I, was just engrossed in it. I took the rouge trader and compendium books with me to high school with me (codex’s weren’t out yet). We didn’t know anybody else who even knew what the hell 40k was, we were closeted nerds. 2nd edition really established the game, and set the ground rules moving forward. But even up through 2010, it felt very niche, but now……WOW, there are so many fans now, most have never even played, they just love the universe. It’s really awesome seeing people fall in love with something that’s been a huge part (and mostly a secret) of my life. Thanks again to the UA-cam community, you’ve made an old fan grateful.
Your welcome and Im happy to hear it. This channel is dedicated to getting new folks into the hobby. I figure theirs enough channels covering every detail. But theirs almost nobody targeting new folks.
What was frustrating 20 years ago was, I was constantly trying to grow the fan base, and the barrier to entry financially for young “let’s face it, male, teens) was extremely high. As it was for me when I was their age (a box of 10 Terminators in 1990 was $30), a box of 30 marines was $30, guess which one we all got? I purchased every piece of literature produced, game related or novel. None of these kids could do that, so I would hold lore sessions with them, educating them on what was actually happening. Now with UA-cam, they have access to all of that, I think it’s awesome, and am grateful for the new fans. On a side note, the actual hobby has priced themselves out of anyone but the middle aged dad and above. GW should (and is sorta trying to branch out) from the modeling side. The IP is their greatest asset, if they do it right (and they’ve been cautious (which isn’t bad) to answer that. Could be 1980s Star Wars brand value
I come back to watch this frequently. My goodness the animation is fantastic. I catch something new each time. Its absolutely insane this was done by a single person
Regarding the 'shot' which seems to hit (destroy?) the tentacled Warp entity: I've always wondered if the shot is meant to be understood as coming from the plasma pistol, which the lead Astartes managed to get inside the orb before firing. The pistol exploded and destroyed his hand, but may have still fired its plasma into the warpspace, right at the entity in its vulnerable state. Regarding the end: it's definitely not a different galaxy, at least, as 40K lore is clear that the Milky Way's Immaterium is disconnected from any other warpspace which may or may not exist in other galaxies.
I think the Orbs are basically the physical manifestation of the Umbra. This weird alien species that appear as black Spheres to a normal eye and were somehow, somewhat related to the Warp itself.
18:24 really remind me of fear and hunger when you get to the part with all the gods who have “retired” and are just hanging out in the big vaefeteris looking room thing

Also found another movie called ultramarines today, was a great watch as well!
I liked the video, you did a great job. In addition to your explanation I think you should have closed with talking about why he threw up blood exiting the warp, and the service studs on his brow. Small things that need explanation for newcomers to WH40K and easy to hit. Anyways, as I said, great breakdown of this amazing short. Syama Pedersen (the creator of this short for anyone else reading this who is new) is an amazing animator.
I read a comment somewhere saying that the marine ended up in the Mariana Trench on Terra. He said that when the oceans dried up during the age of strife all the warlords went there and carved their faces into the walls of the trech
It could be that, the original artist wants you to interpret it as whatever you want. Thats also why in the video their is almost no talking. The artist wanted the context to be up to you.
Having just finished "the hunt for voldorius" it occurs to me that the orbs seen are something similar to the prison cell of the bloodtide, and that there is something a whole lot worse inside of it
You missed a few details. The orb says" you must take them", referring to the strike team. At the end, if you pay attention to the other platforms, you can see other flashes of light, meaning the other marines got teleported as well. Also, the dots on the marines forehead.
The shot at 17:45 ish comes from the marine shooting just before when his arm is blown off. There is some sort of time alteration. You can see him look into the order and lock in on where to aim. He then aims and shoots the entity that is pulling them all in. That is why they get released.
I never caught on to the fact there was an impact as you said at 16:55. Great catch, thanks for the explanation. Pretty new to Warhammer since I just played Space Marine. Thanks!
I don’t think the chapters wipe the memories of aspirants. Several Black Library books about Astartes have them remembering their childhood, the Nightlords Omnibus is a good example. The main character constantly references his childhood on Nostromo, and growing up with Zarl.
Been here since 87 (11), I’m glad I wasn’t the only person slightly confused, but took away exactly your hypothesis. Great explanations for the uninitiated on what the warp/chaos is, and “it’s what you want it to be”. That’s how I took it for this video. Subtitles would have been nice for the warp dialog
for clarification: a Bolter round is basically a .50 (12.7mm) self-propelled, recoilless HEAP shell. hence those things make a huge mess. it can, by modern days, be compared to the FRAG-12 round, or the respective variant for the AA-12, which is basically a Bolter with that kind of ammo
Astartes Bolt rounds are .75 caliber, the .50 caliber ones are what humans lucky enough to have a Boltgun use. There are also .998 caliber Bolt rounds.
The white space marine helmets denote Veteran Status and are usually associated with Company Veterans, which would form the Company HQ element in an IRL military. There is also the 1st Company of a Chapter, which is comprised entirely of Veterans. The Space Marine with the white coat and laurels on his helmet is a Captain. The Iron Cross looking thing is the Crux Terminatus, a sign of Veterancy that allows a Space Marine to wear one of the few coveted Terminator Armours of the chapter, if the mission requires it. I cant determine if the Marines are part of the 1st or 3rd Company. I guess they are part of the 3rd Company, as the knee pad is one of the places some chapters denote the Company they are part of. The I inside the Crux Terminatus should thus signify the affiliation of those Space Marines with the Holy Inquisition. What throws me for a loop are the white shoulder pauldrons, usually they denote the 1st Company, but they could just denote Elite/HQ status. So summarize: The Captain is likely the Captain of the 3rd Company and his bodyguard is a Company Veteran with likely hundreds of years of service and countless battles. The Space Marines have 5 "roles", usually denoted via a symbol on the shoulderpad: HQ, Elite, Troop, Assault and Support
I was going to say something similar, but that depends on this chapter being fully codex-compliant. The tactical symbols on the squad's shoulder-pads says they're not as way out there as the Wolves, but they might be similar to DA or BA, *mostly* compliant, but with differences, such as different veteran markings, or different company markings.
Not exactly in real life. From the platoon onwards military units are led by comissioned officers in most armies, which mostly means you need to attend officer school. Veterancy will generally only allow promotion to non-comissioned officer status, the highest ranked and experienced of which will assist officers in command tasks. So you can have the platoon or company commander have no combat experience, the positioned attained purely by their education as an officer. This is a bit of a running trope in pop culture - Band of Brothers illustrates this during the Bastogne part, where new West-point grauate commanders are shown struggling to command their troops, and Generation Kill also shows some of this "veterans led by newcomers" friction.

The other reason why they're blessing their weapons is for the very real existence of sorcery, psychic powers, daemons and magic. All parts of their arms and armor are blessed by Chaplains and Sanctioned Psykers in the belief that it will repel the ruinous powers of such malevolent beings that may make their armory either fail, be ruined or just doesn't work.

Legendary comment
Not really any reason to mention that this is about 40k not basic military tactics.

@@BlackViperMWG That orb-entity probably lit itself up like a beacon in the Warp and immediately drew the attention of a stronger, hungry warp entity that just devoured it.
The black cloud attacking the warp entity was probably the Inquisitor. His 'aura' was identical in the preceeding scenes. Even in death, he served.
Stop talking nonsense and confusing noobs
God Bless. The emperor protects
Yes. That makes sense to me.
And they shall know no fear. :)
I love watching analysis of Astartes. Everyone manages to catch something different. I never noticed all the unused skulls in the room with the big construct before.
Personal addition for anyone wondering:
The background story is that humanity spread out through the Galaxy over the course of several thousands of years, then by the 25th millenia, developed psychic powers (leading to possesions that killed entire solar systems) and the AIs we used to make things run went full Skynet.

@TzunSu Yeah, you're right, but I was trying to boil things down to the bare minimum, and I think that was starting to go into details

One should not forget, that the Inquisitor that was communicating with the orb, was probably the highest ranking officer on that ship. A human inquisitor's authority is above most Astartes and can command them to do as he wants. Basically they are untouchable.... unless turning to demon due corruption.
I doubt that was the inquisitor, they usually have an entire team of subservients for them to use, psykers and astropaths chief among them
@@agrape2887 wearing the inquisitional badge without permission is heresy.... Probably other team members in the ship
@Peniley Majorey yeah thats a bit confusing. But i remember somewhere i read that even the grey knights answer to some inquisitiors. However it is so that any inquisitor is above all other non inquisitors in the imperium.
@Peniley Majorey Cease your investigations. Non shall question the authority of the Holy Inquisition. :)
@Peniley Majorey Welcome to the Inquisitions biggest issue. Itself and it's own unlimited authority.
For those wondering what the Warp entities are saying:
Inquisitors orb - "Who is there?"
Strike Team orb - "I am here, brother. We have all failed."
Inquisitors orb - "The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal."
Strike Team orb - "Impossible. We'll never survive"
Inquisitors orb - "You.must.take.them"
Inquisitor - "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY"
I would like to think that the Inquisitor warning the Chapter Master to recall his men caused his lapse in focus, ultimately giving away his presence to the Warp entities, who had no idea he was eavesdropping, and thus causing him to become possessed.

That's a GREAT catch!
Great catch
SMG's are tricky......and......and......they.....um......
one of the reasons as to why when someone says that a halo spartan can defeat a space marine i just laugh XD
They have strong arms, but feeble wrists, and they fire smg with one hand. Cuz reasons. And stuff. xD
if you lookclosly you can see they control the recoil with another hand (6:18). and when they fire single hand (7:31) the gun goes out of control.
@@ddjohnson9717 he hasn't full control of his limbs in this scene. i think they have no problem to control recoil with just one hand atleast for a Boltpistole

"...no escape. I have failed brother."
'We have all failed. The Astartes deny our touch. You must return, break your seal."
"Impossible, (I) will never survive."
"You must! Take them!"
[/edit]
My own interpretation was:
- Who's there?
- I have failed, brother.
- We have all failed.
- The astartes defy our touch.
- We must return. Break your seal.
- That's impossible, we'll never survive.
- We must, take the offer.
still hearing '' we must take the alpha'' (the psyker)
The animator did an AMA on reddit ages ago…he regretted not putting in subtitles! The orb says: “You must. Take them.” As in:
‘You must’ - break your seal.
‘Take them’ - kidnap the thic bois surrounding you and take ‘em with you.
That’s when the inquisitor turns to the veteran fella and says “recall them immediately” - it’s really muffled though.
Hope that helps
@@peppernanny "We must" - do this, and survive.
"Take the offering" - the sacrificial astartes, which it did.
@@Foxstab no they said "take them"
That makes a lot of sense.
I would go for the latter)
But the captured indicates how desperate they are and that they have no choice.
They must take the offer. (This might be linked to some ultimatum imposed by the demon)
What happens next is the process of going to the warp and the marines are taken along.
I love this
So do we just have a weaker version of the orks’ psychic field?

@@thegoat1701 sadly to become a historian and 40 K knowledge you have to watch multiple eight hour plus long videos😂
That makes alot of sense I didn't even think of the emperor intervening like that
Glad someone else thinks this. "The Emeror Protects"

The microrockets followed by the melta confirms it as a Caestus
7:04 I like to believe that this astartes fired his plasma pistol into the psyker’s shield as a way to create a smoke screen, impairing his enemy’s view to give himself more of a chance of breaking through
Not all Astartes minds are wiped. In the Novel "The Emperor's Gift", When asking the female Inquisitor what tribe she's from, he tells her he still remembers them to this day. Also another Wolf Lord found out that an large band of Trolls were rampaging through his former clans homeland killing his people and he went there to fight with them
Argel Tal also remembered his sisters and mother
I've read somewhere that some Salamanders chapters don't fully memory wipe their astartes either, they're allowed to remember who their parents are
AFAIK it's only the Grey Knights?

I think that tactically he was moving in the shadows parallel to his unit.

The orbs were most likely Umbra - a Xenos species
The devices the Astartes stabbed the orb with were most likely not communication devices, but more likely psychic suppressors - they just were not strong enough
The Inquisitor threaded extremely dangerous grounds...only an Inquisitorian Psycher would have been skilled and strong enough to try this task
Although he got overwhelmed when the two Umbra conjuncted
Nonetheless its highly likely the entity that did disrupt the warp entities (all likely Umbra) was the spirit of the Inquisitor - sacrificing himself to intervene
The Emporer protects!
The only thing that would have me think it may be the C'Tan and not the Umbra is the ending. What do the Umbra have to do with a structure littered with giant, dead humanoid figures?
@@adrikubel the umbra are orbs whjch are incredibly psyonically gifted
They manipulate the warp so why would it be surprising that they teleport beings through the warp?
I imagine a cross between Master Chief's armor ... and the TARDIS.
@@mackenzles yooo you got a bit too far with that one, TARDISes are too OP, even for warhammer

Human combat technology was so advanced the ORKS sued for peace.
If I were to guess, probably not as good as the emperor's golden boys but pretty dangerous still.
I think the message the marines get just before the orb pulls them in is something like "Get back to the ship. MOVE."
The marine lost his hand because he fired his own plasma pistol inside the orb which created explosive backfire.

1:25 not in the vast majority of cases. Many chapters do not practice mind wiping at all for example Salamanders and Space Wolves.
This feels like Khan Academy but for 40k
I come back to watch this frequently. My goodness the animation is fantastic. I catch something new each time. Its absolutely insane this was done by a single person
Regarding the 'shot' which seems to hit (destroy?) the tentacled Warp entity:
I've always wondered if the shot is meant to be understood as coming from the plasma pistol, which the lead Astartes managed to get inside the orb before firing. The pistol exploded and destroyed his hand, but may have still fired its plasma into the warpspace, right at the entity in its vulnerable state.
Regarding the end:
it's definitely not a different galaxy, at least, as 40K lore is clear that the Milky Way's Immaterium is disconnected from any other warpspace which may or may not exist in other galaxies.
another comment was theorizing it was the psyker/inquisitors spirit after he was possessed by the captured orb.
I think the Orbs are basically the physical manifestation of the Umbra. This weird alien species that appear as black Spheres to a normal eye and were somehow, somewhat related to the Warp itself.
There is likely a servitor in each defense pod
18:24 really remind me of fear and hunger when you get to the part with all the gods who have “retired” and are just hanging out in the big vaefeteris looking room thing
About the "drones" at 1:43. Since when does 40K have unmanned drones? They would have to be servitors, right?
Thanks for making this detailed video. I just came across the full merged episodes made into a short film an hour ago.
By god, I can’t believe I’m now finding out about WarHammer 40k and just became a fan. Can’t wait to dive into HOURS of lore about these guys.
Having just finished "the hunt for voldorius" it occurs to me that the orbs seen are something similar to the prison cell of the bloodtide, and that there is something a whole lot worse inside of it
17:49, even in the grimdark you will sick up corn even if you can't remember the last time you had any.
You missed a few details. The orb says" you must take them", referring to the strike team. At the end, if you pay attention to the other platforms, you can see other flashes of light, meaning the other marines got teleported as well. Also, the dots on the marines forehead.
Dots are years of service
The shot at 17:45 ish comes from the marine shooting just before when his arm is blown off. There is some sort of time alteration. You can see him look into the order and lock in on where to aim. He then aims and shoots the entity that is pulling them all in. That is why they get released.
Great video, I don't play the games but am fascinated by the stories and backgrounds so this video explains a lot.
Grey Knights do, but the only 1 I know of that do so.
@@Ralgimanek well, anything touched by Ward….. am I right?
Been here since 87 (11), I’m glad I wasn’t the only person slightly confused, but took away exactly your hypothesis. Great explanations for the uninitiated on what the warp/chaos is, and “it’s what you want it to be”. That’s how I took it for this video. Subtitles would have been nice for the warp dialog
Awesome, thank you!
Good thing someone's out there reuploading Kullivars videos.
Well thats because we all are Kullivar :D.

Came to support your channel from RA. Looks very interesting.
Thanks and welcome
for clarification: a Bolter round is basically a .50 (12.7mm) self-propelled, recoilless HEAP shell. hence those things make a huge mess. it can, by modern days, be compared to the FRAG-12 round, or the respective variant for the AA-12, which is basically a Bolter with that kind of ammo
Astartes Bolt rounds are .75 caliber, the .50 caliber ones are what humans lucky enough to have a Boltgun use. There are also .998 caliber Bolt rounds.
the human scale bolter would be .50 cal, the astartes one 2 -3 times larger caliber imo.
15:34 i just loved that this scene became a meme. The quick punch and his brother fires off immediately, no hesitation
Love how he clarified that this is for normal people. 0:01
Yep, this video was made to propagandize the masses about 40k and get them hooked into our addiction in Sci Fi :D.
This is a bit of a running trope in pop culture - Band of Brothers illustrates this during the Bastogne part, where new West-point grauate commanders are shown struggling to command their troops, and Generation Kill also shows some of this "veterans led by newcomers" friction.
they are number 16 tyrant's Fists from "borken throne" based on they emblem on left shoulder piece
Honestly, you explaining this lore. I hope to see more of you explain more ! Thank you
