Also the Brood Lord’s pose looks like the insignia; I’d imagine that’s why the tail curls forward that way. I actually ended up liking it a lot more when I noticed that.
I never noticed it, and thank you for pointing it out! But it *also* looks rather... uhm... Well, more genedaddy than just genefather, let's put it that way. Which kinda... still is a bit...
The GS cult range is one of my favorite along with the AdMech one. The conversion potential is thru the roof. And similarly to the necromunda stuff i just love the snap shot civilian life and gear. I just hope that as the range expands that they keep to the industrial/mining/consruction stylings
GS cults, Admech, and sisters are easily the best ranges. However they have the distinct advantage of being all new and so are very cohesive. Eldar have some sculpts over 20 years old, orks have some almost as old, same with chaos and even space marines. Hope they do more "whole faction at a time" changes
I thought the same thing and ended up in the process of putting together a rogue trader/ private military contractor army using gsc, admech and ig as base models, I'll end up using the gsc codex by the look of it
As a kid in the 00s I wanted them to bring back Genestealer Cults so badly to go with my Nids. They brought them back during my hiatus from the hobby and they went beyond my expectations. My Cult is now the size of my Hive Fleet despite having collected the Cult for only two years as opposed to the ten years I spent building my Hive Fleet.
Unfortunately Kirioth is right, they do suck. They’re not even that crazy-stupid sort of enjoyable, like the Goliath or the flying boxes. I’m only able to enjoy them in art.
Yo, you could use the shield on the goliath rockgrinder as a shield on a chaos knight. Given your taste in bat shit crazy knight conversions, I figured I'd make the suggestion.
I've had an idea since 2017, when, in the grip of some kind of persistent fever dream, I produced over 15k words of fanfic over a week and a half under the concept 'what if a genestealer patriarch was severed from the hive mind?' Following that concept, an army developed, distinct from genestealers proper but with many common themes. I called them 'the Dawnguard.' They protect their planet from invading xenos and heretics with a ferocity unmatched, for without the influence of the hive mind, the only thing left is an all-consuming will to live, and even within the Imperium's galactic eastern outskirts, well... in farming the others lies the most secure path for the Brood, and perhaps the people of Arakaea as well, in the minds of those with enough human blood to require such justification. I suddenly and abruptly feel the need to assemble a shelf full of examples of the concept.
I love the Sanctus’ little helper, and to me he makes perfect sense as a sniper generally works in tandem with a spotter. Plus as you said, he’s very fun 😂
Genestealer vehicle armies are not only doable, they are encouraged with the Rusted Claw cult. The Ridgerunners, Jackles and Jackle Alphus all harmonize really well and allow complete supremacy of the whole board. Ridgerunners with flair launchers boost the movement of friendly vehicles and gain a feel no pain save. Genestealer hybrid skin is a lot less intimidating once you get a hang of it. Rarkath Flesh, Kislev Flesh (Swap out the Kislev flesh for Daemonett hide with more genestealery hybrids) Reikland Fleshshade, screaming skull highlight - boom!
@@antoinep.2565 drown the bitches. Well don't, but yeah shade all the skin. It gives them a gross clammyness quality and their skin sections are very detailed with lots of contours that benefit from it.
@@antoinep.2565 but if you want them to look more pale, thin the fleshshade with lahmian medium. I also like using a bit of druchii violet at the back of their heads from the neck to give a slight alien quality.
The Genestralers are great. I am slowly working on a Genestealer cult army, and they have infested the Planetary defence Force, of a mining world. I have also taken the bikes and made them in to my regular Astra militarum army as special forces scouts by swapping the Genetealer cult heads with Militarum Tempestus. Hope to start painting them real soon.
I wish we had something like those genestealer bikes for Imperial guard. A bike mounted squad with their heavy weapons being carried on a quad would work very well. We'd need an improvement to rough riders to make them not instantly obsolete though; maybe different mount options? Also, if they do eventually make primaris bikes, I want there to be 3 size categories of bike: light fast jet bikes probably with a reentry shield on the front so they can do direct orbital insertion, medium weight wheeled bikes that look mostly the same as the current bikes but a little bigger and with actual suspension, and larger half track bikes (think kettenkrad) for terminator like units or other super heavy mounted infantry. Maybe a dreadnought sized one in that category so the poor white scars dreadnoughts can keep up.
Maybe have Rough Riders be melee specialists and Bikers be ranged? Give the Rough Riders an extra attack and bump them up a couple of points (and of course release a plastic kit)
@@catdragon-6631 that sounds like a good idea. I also like the idea of more exotic mounts as well and ogrin cavalry with ripper guns as close in heavy support cavalry. Maybe also a cavalry officer as an hq please so they can get orders. Would really help to represent lower tech regiments, and fill out the guard's fast attack slot the way they've already got umpteen bajillion heavy supports and elite options. If they were going to revamp guard cavalry though I feel like theyd need to make regiment effects also affect cavalry, since they dont benefit from that right now like infantry and vehicles do.
David Thomas yeah, maybe even Cavalry Ace stratagems or different profiles for regiments (like Fen Guard Cow Riders or Vostroyan Shirtless Bear Riders)
Loving these range reviews, new to the hobby (Sadly cant get any models due to the lockdown but certainly going to!) and these really help to inform me what is good and what kind of armies i could make. Knowing nothing about quality and whats considered good its really helpful to have these so thanks a lot!
Honestly, best thing you can do when new to the hobby, go with the rule of cool. If you think an army looks cool, go for it. Sometimes the gaming aspect can take over a little and people gear more towards what is competitive in the game. But if you're just starting out, you'll enjoy it so much more going for the ones you just like the look of most
The Neophyte Hybrids are one of my favourite kits. Around the time of their first release, they were useful for converting options as wargears to use for the Chaos cultists. Goliath Truck is impressive, so is the Achillies Ridgerunner, and the heads from the Genestealer Cults upgrade frame wearing respirators.
I gave in to the land of temptation while watching this video XD Got myself the start of a Fyreslayers army, the battletome, a unit and a book. :) Do it Kirioth give in, also the Genestealer cults are an awesome army for conversions I want to do a mech based Hive Gang with them use all the bikes vehicles etc oh and for the Abhorent I think its called use an Ambot instead to keep the theme,
Regarding the Biophagus' Bond villainesque appearance, I've always felt that playing the GCs in Deathwatch Overkill (and, to a slightly lesser extent, 40K itself) always makes me feel like a Bond villain: it encourages you to send expendable minions to keep foes busy, while concentrating your more valuable assets against things you actually intend to kill; tying enemies up in close combat so they're unable to evade the explosive charges you've set to blow up the platform they're standing on, telepathically paralysing a foe before unleashing your deadliest minions upon them... In short, I feel the Bond villain analogy is completely accurate. :D
@kirioth you mentioned in the forgeworld guard video that the elysian tauros buggies were discontinued. A simple weapon and crew conversion of the achilles would work wonders for that
With the whole mining aesthetic, the Rockgrinder has given me ideas for a weaponised "Continuous Miner". If you don't know what that is just Google it. It's basically a big cutting drum with conveyor belt up the middle, platforms along the side to stand on and a pintle each side at the front to mount a rock drill. It is so perfect.
You should go for it! They’re somewhat challenging to paint with lots of small details but very rewarding because of the very unique as you said “mad max” presence. And they are very challenging to play! 10/10, would recommend
Ahhh, I think that I still have the White Dwarf with the first set of Genestealer Cult rules. I seem to remember having to role for number of arms on certain generations! 11:56 - trouser accident.
You know, I got my own genestealer army, and I have been using them not only as genestealers who were born of a black goo, but also using some of the units stand in for my IG army/ traitor guard army, or even using the neophytes to boost the infantry numbers on my guard army. So I get some milage out of these guys
Dont be intimated there a blast to paint, I thought the same thing when I first was going to get some but one neophytes squad later and I was hooked. Seriously buy one small squad second hand even and try then out you won't regret it.👍
oh hey another range review. Kirioth:"i don't like how the space marine bikes are designed", with a suspicious hint of nid in his voice. Me:"yes Inquisitor, this video right here".
For the Broodlord the design principle was that his pose silhouette from the side-profile is meant to match the Tyranid Icon. That's why his head and tail are curved inwards like that, you can check by comparing his pose to the icon-bearer's Icon.
I had a problem with the Patriarch tail as well until I realized it made his body shape/silhouette resemble the GSC ouroboros icon and now I really like it
My theory is, Tunnels are often dug circular, the saws on the Goliath shield aren’t to dig out a tunnel but so it doesn’t get stuck on a rocky out cropping if the tunnels diameter is a bit too small, idk what the bottom one is for tho because it should have good ground clearance.
The thing that makes the Genestealer Cult so horrifying to me is they don't come out of eggs, the aren't made in tubes, they aren't summoned from the Warp, some woman gave birth to every one of these monstrosities.
I look forward to your next video where you show us your first purchases of Genestealer Cult and how you plan to expand the army. Tempting, very tempting.
the Brood brothers- I now want two gene stealers in black suits, fedoras, and sunglasses who sing classic M.2 hits and are on a mission from.the 4 armed Emperor
Yes, join the cult, we can field also the forgeworld astra militarum tanks. Jokes aside the best thing about this range is the level of bits you get. Like the neophyte you get 10 shotguns, 10 autoguns, 1 granade launcher, 1 flamer, 1 webber, 1 mining laser, 1 heavy stubber, 1 seismic cannon. All of those weapons just for 1 squad. The acolytes one is the same for the metamorph hybrids so you get AAALL OF THE ARMS, plus 5 autopistols, 5 hand flamers, 1 rock cutter, 1 rock grinder, big explosives, 1 big drill from a modeling and kitbashing standpoin is my favourite range
I agree that it might be better for the Broodlord's tail to be moved. But looking at him I just realized that if you look at the model from the side, his curled tail makes him into the Tyranid symbol perfectly. And that's some beautifully subtle symbolism
What really helps me appreciate the Broodlord models tail is that it is meant to look like the crescent Tyranid logo. I think its kind of clever as a way to help the Broodlord convince the cultists of their authority.
Even if you're not going to start a GSC army anytime soon and really just want the Rockgrinder's dozerblade, the Goliath Truck itself, without the guns and crew, works really well as a piece of Imperium (or, with a little conversion work; Ork) terrain. And you can still add those bits to make it part of a GSC army at any later point. I even used one as a proxy for a Taurox in a small Guard detachment.
I would never collect a Genestealer Cult army... but i would happily buy their models. Using those bikes to create a company of rough riders. Using those larger vehicles to create some admech variant vehivles... or as kitbashes for my orks... Kitbashing with the aberrants into chaos modles... the options are limitless with these guys
Realising that the ridgerunner is just a high-tech hilux technical. I can now die in peace. Also, space DJ must rejoin with your Emperor's Children. They demand it!
For 50cents i got that rocky sign weapon. Cut it into three bits. Debris, the two right hands, and the sign. The sign is my old nurgle cults plague sword. The two hands now are apart of a chaos berserkers chain sword hand. Honostly best 50 cents i spent.
I keep coming back to this video. Ive always wanted to do a cult force... But even more I want to use these models for the guard. Those bikes would be amazing for roughriders.
I think the Patriarch tail position is designed to make it look like the cult symbol. If you look at the model side on, the head, curved back, and tail pose, all match the icons across the entire range.
Take the frontplate of the Rockgrinder and put it on your Thousand Sons vehicle as intended, or use it as a shield for a large Dreadnought or a Knight. Then give the rest of the rockgrinder to Barry and his mates to use as a Trukk.
Considering the lore of the Genestealer Patriarch and what he does when he gets to a planet, ( The Genestealer's Kiss) I think the phallic positioning of the tail is hilarious.
You could always use the goliath as a terrain piece in a ruin since the cults use those vehicle's because they're standard industrial equipment having a beat up or destroyed truck would fit nicely on an imperial ruins table. This is only really viable if your into making your own terrain
I really love those Range Reviews for the various factions! It's a nice delve into the model ranges, especially when you do it for less prominent factions like GSC or the Daughters of Khaine last time!
Hmm I don't have any genestealer cult models but for sure out of all people you could have guessed that all the familiars (the little genestealers) have a use. The last model you talked about ,Sanctus can ignore armor saves thanks to the familiar and have him attack twice each time he fights. You can of course remove him but he is part of the models strength.
The tentacle head on the guy in 14:12 would actually make a good amount of sense in the lore since the top left arm clearly belongs to a lictor, who have squid faces.
What's so unique about the GS range is there characters. Even as high ranked as they are, their elites and HQ still look pretty close to regular people. They aren't 8 feet tall and 4 feet thick thanks to layers of power armor and muscles.
You know what. I'm new to Warhammer. But I can already tell how respectable everyone is in terms of criticism. I've not seen any hate yet. Also with the tentacle head ones, I really do see where you're coming from. Its not an opinion I share, but I do understand what you're on about
If GW ever does a sub faction for these guys. I think a fishing or harbor town with a bunch of aquatic, water based genestealers would be awesome. In fact I’m thinking about making some deep sea Tyranids.
@@duncanmcokiner4242 it depends on the era and theme of the army Imo. I have a whole armored batallion of renegade guardsmen for my Word Bearer host... 1 super heavy tank company, 2 battle tank companies, 1 armored fist company (infantry is a kitbash of ungors, cadians, vraks ren, catachans and chaos marauders) 1 HQ&Support company and 1 self propelled artillery company. The HQ&Support company includes a Recon section of three Sentinels, Three hellhounds, a squadron of cold one rough riders, two stormtrooper squads and a Valkyrie. An AAA section of a FW Hydra. from a modeling and kitbashing standpoin is my favourite range
I agree that it might be better for the Broodlord's tail to be moved. But looking at him I just realized that if you look at the model from the side, his curled tail makes him into the Tyranid symbol perfectly. And that's some beautifully subtle symbolism
7:45 "What could I even convert it into?"
All kits, are Ork kits.
Not all revolvers had fluting on the cylinder. Have a look at a Colt Walker.
What really helps me appreciate the Broodlord models tail is that it is meant to look like the crescent Tyranid logo. I think its kind of clever as a way to help the Broodlord convince the cultists of their authority.
Someone: "Genestealer Cult isn't the best range"
Biophagus: NOT SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE!!!
12:55 In this moment we can see the moment Kirioth decided to start GSC
Even if you're not going to start a GSC army anytime soon and really just want the Rockgrinder's dozerblade, the Goliath Truck itself, without the guns and crew, works really well as a piece of Imperium (or, with a little conversion work; Ork) terrain. And you can still add those bits to make it part of a GSC army at any later point. I even used one as a proxy for a Taurox in a small Guard detachment.
Those bikes would be soooo easy to turn into Imperial Guard Rough Rider type guys, And that Ridgerunner would work so well in a so many conversions.
The whole point of the Patriarch's tail is to turn him into the coiled serpent symbol that they all worship.
As so as I saw the profile view, I knew that was what they were going for
Kitbash heaven
I like the broodlord tail because it plays up the hr gieger alien inspiration
KiriothTV according to the lore of how genestealer infestations are caused I’m not sure if that is a tail
Only reason I don't mind the tail on the Patriarch is that it makes him into the GSC icon.
In fact I’m thinking about making some deep sea Tyranids.
i felt that mad max build vibe. this whole range, even every infantry piece, could be made into an awesome mad max inspired army
And guard can’t even get Rough riders but geanstealer cults get bikes
SM bikes are copies of the Lawmaster from Judge Dredd,, Im having a hard time NOT stating a cult force
I'm having a hard job not buying a heap to convert into a Veteran Vanguard for my Guard tbh.
I think the word youre looking for is "A symetrical" ;) Those dirtbikes are dope--imagine hollowing out the headlights and installing some mini leds.
Could grab some Achilles Ridgerunner and convert them for the Elysian Drop Troops ;-)
Genestealer cultists are great for Chaos Cultists in an Iron Warriors army.
Same for Word Bearers
@@SonsOfLorgar Eh. Their more industrial look suits the Iron Warriors better, I find. Less religious Chaos and more brutal utilitarianism.
@@duncanmcokiner4242 it depends on the era and theme of the army Imo.
I have a whole armored batallion of renegade guardsmen for my Word Bearer host...
1 super heavy tank company, 2 battle tank companies, 1 armored fist company (infantry is a kitbash of ungors, cadians, vraks ren, catachans and chaos marauders)
1 HQ&Support company and 1 self propelled artillery company.
The HQ&Support company includes a Recon section of three Sentinels, Three hellhounds, a squadron of cold one rough riders, two stormtrooper squads and a Valkyrie.
An AAA section of a FW Hydra.
An engineering section with a Demolisher with mine rollers and a Destroyer Tank hunter with a mine plow.
@@SonsOfLorgar I'd use them as Traitor Guard for the Iron Warriors. Mainly so I can recapture the old school Iron Warrior feel where they have lots of Super Heavies and artillery rather than just yet another Daemon Engine spam army.
When kiri calls the 5th generations the first phase i die a little inside
Honor the lore, bros!
Lot of potential Nurgle conversions here. Those vehicles...damn they noice!
The Locus has a sneaky tail poking out, easily missed but when I saw it I thought 'Zing!'
I don't really like the tail on the broodlord model, but I do appreciate that they sculpted a model based on the tyranid logo/icon.
I have a friend that plays Astra Milatarum and he converted some Genestealer Cult models into an Imperial Guard Regiment 😊
Thanks so much for this review! I had no idea how to get decent looking dudes for my veteran squad of imperial guard and just cadians are plain and not veterany enough
The Broodlord has its tail between its legs as it supposed to look like the army icon in silhouette.
The reason the patriarch has the tail between its legs is so it's sillouhette reflects the genestealer cult symbol
Sweet I was thinking of expanding my cultists and I look forward to your input on it.
It's nice to know dirt bikes and quads still exist far, far into the future!
Clamavus... if ever there was a chance for tyranids to go chaotic, Come 'ere noisy bois...
Never really seen the abberants things before, but you read my mind: grotesques. I want to get a box and turn them onto drukhari grotesques
They might be a bit small for Grotesques; they actually aren't much bigger than the standard Neophyte or Acolyte.
@@robertwinslade3104 still better than the single overpriced model GW offers
@@gileschenery2536 absolutely agree; it's insane that you need to buy three separate failcast blister packs for a total of £46:50 just to field a single minimum sized unit of grotesques. I've been planning to add some Covens to my Drukhari and I think I'll just use either Crypt Horrors or Wraithguard to convert mine
@@robertwinslade3104 defiled wraith guard could be great
Genestealer Cults really has done a fantastic job of portraying futuristic but still recogniseable working equipment that has been repurposed for a militia.
I have never noticed the Broodlords tail like that and now I can’t unsee it
I always loved the look and lore of the Genestealer cults since they where introduced in the old advanced Space Quest game...And I've always wanted to make a Mad Max inspired army...and Genestealer cults or Orks are on the top of my list for taken on that role..
After watching this review i accidently came out of gw shop with a start collecting box.
the patriarch is in the same shape as the iconography (banners, dangly trinkets etc) so while yeah it looks a bit odd thematically i love it, alternatively you could always just pick up a Broodlord, they're the same thing
4:36 that magi guy wouldn't look to out of place as a farseerer if you have him a helmet
