@@Ashley-lm4nv That is an excellent question! Because exercising doubt ensures that you understand the true things, as they will always be able to defend themselves, and avoid the false things, because they will fail or refuse to defend themselves. Accepting something which is not true as true can very easily kill you. Without being able to judge if something is true or not, you become totally at the mercy of anyone who tells you anything or any emotion you feel. You become incapable of figuring out what is dangerous and what is helpful.

Well that's normal. Catholicism isn't Christianity. It's a secular organization that just wants your money and puts your life in mans hands not god. I dont need to light candles and say a hail mary etc a priest cannot absolve you of your sins nor can any of the patron saints of Catholicism 🤣🤣🤣 preach the bible without reading it. Just as bad as jehovah witnesses. Worship god and the bible, but doesn't believe in the holy trinity of the bible father, son, holy spirit. Big part of the bible nah we dont believe that. I've always had problems with Catholicism, as well, in Sunday school. I asked the teacher where God came from and why there is so much evil in the world if God is defined to be 1. All-loving and 2. Omnipotent. They pretty much said, it's part of our faith and it's a mystery which isn't a compelling answer at all. But I still believed in this nonsense to some degree until the year 2010 when I started watching videos from the atheist experience. At the same time, I was arguing for the existence of God in the comments section, but the replies seemed more potent and robust than the spectacularly weak arguments that I put forth. So, that was the initiation of my deconversion.

But on that note I liked the reaction keep it up.

    • @TheMeefive
      @TheMeefive 3 роки тому +8

@Curious George George Carlin was telling jokes. Anyone who took him seriously doesn't understand comedy nor religion. Anyone who gets hurt feelings from comedians clearly shouldn't be watching them. Carlin's jokes are very clearly exaggerations and distortions, that's what makes them funny. But for those who thought he was profound, I'll debunk his routine.
      1. First distortion - God is not an invisible man, He's a Spirit who has no gender. The bible uses he so that we can relate. Now if Carlin was talking about Jesus, he's not invisible either. We can't see him because he's in heaven and we ain't, duh.
      2. Second distortion - God doesn't have a list of 10 things he doesn't want us to do. He has a list of 1; if you want his presence, don't sin. Sin isn't allowed in his presence.
      3. God doesn't send you to hell. Like sin, hell is a choice. If you like to sin then you choose to go where sinners go. Meanwhile God has given us the antidote for sin. Blaming him if you don't take it is like blaming the doctor for your death because you rejected his medical advice.
      4. God doesn't need money. Blaming God because men use religion to get rich is like blaming a car manufacturer because someone purposely hit you with their car.
      5. War, disease, death, poverty, hunger etc... are the result of man choosing sin. Wipe out sin, all this stuff goes away. We have the remedy.
      6. You can see the sun but you can't explain how it came to exist. So you believe in an invisible explanation to the origin of the universe. Good for you.
      7. God literally tells us to pray without ceasing. How is it impolite to pray when he actually tells you too?
      8. Prayer is in the divine plan. We are supposed to pray according to God's word. "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done." If you pray against his will he's not obligated to give you what you ask for.
      9. Prayer is not a grocery list nor a letter to Santa. Prayer is communication with God by which you get to know him and find his will.
Clearly the Joe Pesci part was made up but let's say Joe Pesci did get rid of your neighbor problem. How do you know God didn't send Joe Pesci with the baseball bat? It could have been in the divine plan.
      10. Considering that the objective of prayer isn't about getting what you want but is about getting to know God, there is no way of measuring it's success rate.
      11. Why would God strike the audience dead in answer to an atheist's prayer? God isn't in the business of filling atheists' request.
      12. Carlin challenging God to strike him dead is like a 6 year old kid challenging the President of the United States to nuke him. Why would POTUS respond to a kid's death wish?

I come from religious family and grew out of it when i was teenager because realized it was only my emotional side that needed it for not feeling lonely etc. When i saw that it was only feelings based and stopped caring so much how other people would maybe guilt trip me for not believing, it was easy to let go and move on.

Christianity began as sun worship, the stories about Jesus are symbolic.
He is just a personification of the sun, made into a god figure later on.
The sun "dies" for 3 days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north.
In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin"
The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind"
The sun is "The light of the World"
The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea.
"He cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him", is just sun rays.
Jesus' "crown of thorns" is just the sun's glare, also know as a halo.
The sun's "followers", "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, through which the sun must pass.
The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High": thus.."he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12.
The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30 degrees, hense, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30.
The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified", which represents its passing through the equinoxes.
The vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected.
The reason why saviour myths are so similar with a godman who is crucified and resurrected, who does miracles and has 12 disciples, is that these stories were based on the movements of the sun through the heavens, an astrotheological development that can be found throughout the planet, because the sun and the 12 zodiac signs can be observed around the globe.
In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun throug the heavens.

There SHOULD be questions on religion because religion is responsible for more war death than any other reason,so its kind of important to not only question it,but examine it thoroughly.

The scariest and greatest feeling I experienced was when I came to the acceptance of reality. I'd rather live in truth than in a delusion. There is no invisible sky daddy. No ones keeps a record of my thoughts. Or my actions, except my boss and my friends. They keep me in check both professionally and personally. There is no one book that explains it all. Although I am tempted to argue for a few. But there are volumes upon volumes written by tens of thousands of humans that express their experiences being alive and boy are they a joy to read. And despite my battles with nihilism in the past, a natural part of the overcoming my indoctrination, I am better for it. Because I don't have to pretend anymore. I see clearly. I live authentically, or as much as I can. I treat people well and kind, religious or not, not because I will receive a reward for it, but because it just feels good and makes the world a better place. I celebrate the holidays because it's always been a part of my life and it's truly enjoyable. I just leave out the belief stuff. Because the last time I checked, a thing either exists or it does not. Whether I believe in it or not. Cheers.

Been watching a few reactions of religious people to this legendary Carlin rant.
Yours is easily the best. Where many other reactions tended to evade the arguments in one way or another, here, there's a spirit of open mindedness and readiness to actually acknowledge the points that are being made, and even take them with a healthy dose of humor and self reflection.
So congrats - your religion hasn't closed you off to arguments from "outside", and you don't suffer from the compartmentalization of the mind, that religion so easily forces people into to avoid cognitive dissonance.
You're doing great. As an atheist, I'd wish for you to eventually be able to fully escape this worldview that has so many toxic aspects, but even if you don't, you guys got the spine and intellectual integrity to not let religion mess you up, so that's totally fine too because thats what counts at the end of the day.

@Alberto Garcia Looking back on this comment to Donald Bird: Perhaps, I was rude. I think it's because I found Voltaire being misrepresented all over this thread. If you're wondering about my own level of Voltaire literacy/awareness, I refer you the post by @zaraki119 kenpachi119 in this same thread. He quotes Voltaire as having said something which was actually written by an online troll in 2009.
The same appears to be true with this guy's citation. Where does it come from? He doesn't know. He went to "brainy quotes" .com! Ha! As if brainy people need a website! Real brainy people quote things they've actually read.
"Voltaire firmly believed in God." - Daniel Gordon (scholar/expert) see (The Bedford Series in History and Culture: Boston, 1999. Part One: The Duality of Voltaire, Religion, p. 13.)
Further, I did searches, peer-reviewed scholarly searches, and I can find no such quote (freeing fools) from Voltaire. However, as stated in the @zarak comment/reply mentioned above, I've only read "Candide," a few scholarly treatments of Voltaire, and a handful of Voltaire's personal letters. Therefore, I could be wrong. Maybe Voltaire said this thing about "freeing fools;" however, a contextual understanding of Voltaire's philosophy makes it obvious that he would be including atheist in such a statement. True skeptics know...they don't know.
Fools, well, we see what fools do.

Also in 1 Kings 22:19-23 we read of an event happening and evil being tolerated. Revelation 12:5-10 talks about God purging the evil out of heaven. Revelation 21 talks about Heaven after the evil has been purged. Way I see it is there is still free-will, but the intent or desire of evil won’t be there like there was in 1 Kings 22:19-23. To give an example from a worldly perspective is this. For my experience being a Christian when I went to a Christian school or when I’m around Christian friends I can honestly say I never had any kind of desire to do evil or more generically to sin. The only free-will I desired was to do good. The way I see it is this... Yes evil was tolerated at one point in time in heaven. God basically cleaned things up by casting Satan and his angels out of heaven. Now yes there is still free will, but now purity around people the desire won’t be there to sin. Revelation 21:4 says there is no more pain, sorrow, or death.

Many believers would not be willing to do that. If faith can't stand up to the slightest bit of scrutiny, it must be pretty flimsy to begin with.

When I was a kid I struggled with religion. First I couldn't understand why god would make my brother disabled. Then I couldn't understand why, if there is only one god, why are there SOOOOO many religions and why can't we agree on how to worship god. Then I learned in school that slave owners in the US taught specific bible verses to slaves to justify slavery so black people would accept their position. I also learned that black people were not allowed to practice their religion, know their country of origin, or anything about their culture. that was the day I gave up Christianity because I didn't feel it was a religion compatible with black people. it also didn't make sense to me to pray to my oppressor's god for salvage from oppression. Then I learned in school about manifest destiny, the crusades, the Spanish inquisition, and world war ii, and I lived with horrible actions by my government in the name of god and religion. I realized man used the bible, religion, and religious differences to justify their atrocities. I felt even if there was a god, man was too corrupt to be his messenger. I wanted to believe in god, but I saw to much pain in the world. crime, poverty, excessive wealth, war, murder, and death, etc. finally I took a philosophy class in college and one question we debated was is the world the way it is because there is no god, because there is a god who makes the world a world of pain and despair, or because god gave man free will and man creates pain and despair. and if god gave man free will, is this what he intended with that free will.
Today, i believe in science and nature. I can see those things and I know they exist. i do not need faith to believe in things i can clearly see and feel. i do not believe in god

For me it was the concept of hell. Imagine you have a daughter that you love more than life. Then if she doesn't obey you or disowns you, you send her to some cellar where people torture her eternally. Why tf would you do that?!? What does that give to you? And this creature that made hell is supposed to be the embodiment of love. Just doesn't work.

    • @andremesq
      @andremesq 3 роки тому

@CALEB ALVAREZ You are right that the word has multiple different meanings. When you talk about putting your faith in God the word takes the meaning of trust. You can indeed use faith as a synonymous of trust and be correct, but I often find people trying to switch back and forth between those meanings in the course of an argument when is convenient.
I'm specifically referring to faith as when is used as a justification for a belief. In that context faith takes the place of the evidence and becomes the evidence itself. The "evidence of things unseen" I believe is what's mentioned in the bible.
In this context, when people have a good reason to believe something, they always use that reason. Its only when this falls short that people start to saying they take things on faith.

The Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Incas, Numidians and every civilisation/empire that ever existed practised slavery (btw some still do - apart from the Christians who, after the enlightenment, campaigned against and eventually abolished it!).
