Ben and Jerry were college roommates. They took a $5 dollar mailorder course on how to make ice cream. That is how it started.
Daaaang....and people at UW Madison are spending thousands for that dairy degree....
Oh my gosh, they were room mates.
I actually met them both in Burlington, VT when I settles there less than 2 years after they started the company. Burlington has put an historical marker in the pavement (sidewalk) at the location of the new razed building to honor it's founding. Their main retail outlet was across the street form my Methodist church and so I would end up swinging by every weekend to check out the "factory Seconds" bin.... the stuff that was dinged or somehow not properly done up for normal package sale. They had an actual Ice Cream Parlor style counter for hand scooping as well.
They had an amazing flavor called White Russian back then... sigh.

@@Njazmo Sure! The U stands for University. The following usually indicates the state (for the state public colleges) UVM is University of Vermont. UVA is University of Virginia. UW Madison is University of Wisconsin, Madison (the city) campus. UCLA is University of California, Los Angeles. New York state uses SUNY plus the city for their shorthand (State University of New York). Most states have a state uni or two or three, but generally, the oldest or first goes by the University of Name of State. Virginia, for instance has more than 8 public unis. They all have different names that don't necessarily have the word Virginia in them but are referred to by the abbreviation. No one wants to have to go around saying "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" all the time when you can just say "Virginia Tech." Hope that helps.

My fav is called Phish Food. When I was a kid I adored the movie Aquamarine about a mermaid and they didn’t know what to feed her or something so they got “phish food” (pronounced fish) so I had to go out and have it and it’s been my fav ever since lol. It’s also one of the handful of Gluten Free flavors they have!
Phish is also the name of a Vermont jam rock group. Ben & Jerry's is also based in Vermont. It's definitely not coincidental that they would have a flavor named after Vermont's answer to The Grateful Dead.

It's not like any dialect of English pronounces ever letter in every word.
There is no such thing as an incorrect way to say a word in English. If you know which word is being used, it was pronounced properly.

Of the few flavors of Ben & Jerry's we get around here, in rural Alberta, Cnd., I love "Cherry Garcia". Unlike most of the ice cream (ice milk actually) around here, B & J's are very creamy tasting, like the Canadian brand Chapman's.

Chapman's is creamy? I feel like I've had a completely different experience where it was grainy and not too flavourful. Maybe I should try again, because they always sound like good folks.

I'm a bit lactose intolerant (cheese and yogurt, yes, milk, no, ice cream is iffy), so when I found out that B&J had some ice cream flavs made with almond milk I was elated. They are so good, and the mild almond flavor actually complements the other ingredients wonderfully. It's the only ice cream I buy these days.
Have you tried coconut milk ice cream or yoghurt? Works best with the milder flavours like vanilla or anything you think a coconut flavour works with.
I also love oat milk ice cream too out of all the different non dairy kinds.
I’m not vegan and can tolerate a decent amount of ice cream but decided to try one of their dairy free range. I wish I felt the same about the almond milk - I found it tasted like alcoholic marzipan and hateeddd it!
Almond joke: Almonds used to be harvested by shaking the tree as the nuts fell off. They shook the ell out of the almonds and made then amonds.

Loved it. I like vanilla ice cream but one of my fav B&J flavors is Cherry Garcia. Great to see Paddy and Grainne paired together again. The sound that Grainne makes at 1:41 when she finds the polar bear followed by her "suck off the ice cream" comment was hilarious! 😆Also, as Seamus said, I've never seen an adult so excited about ice cream as Eadaoin was either! 😅

Chocolate fudge brownie used to be my go-to, but it's gotten too rich for my blood. Now it's strawberry cheesecake
My go-to was Rain Forest Crunch (I'm an old). It was discontinued because it was too expensive to make. It was like bougie pralines and cream.

Most vegan ice creams I've had are either *incredibly* sweet with none of the rich depth that you want in an ice cream or very one-note of whatever flavouring was used.
Blai was right. Using coconut or oat milk is better for ice cream. Almonds do add a cardboard taste to it.
I've found that cashewmilk ice cream makes the creamiest, best tasting vegan ice cream. No matter the brand.

The playing dead doesn’t work lol a woman said she tried it but the bear tried to eat her anyway lol playing dead just makes it easier for the bear. Apparently they aren’t as stupid as people think they are.

You can tell which bears are in the area since black bear poop has berries in it, and grizzly poop has bells in it.

I was concerned that I have completely lost touch with popular culture because everyone knew exactly what banoffee pie was, but I'd never heard of it. So I looked it up and saw that it is described as a British dessert. That doesn't mean I haven' t lots touch with popular culture, but there's still hope for me, Oh, I should explain I'm an American facing his 70th birthday in a few months.

They don't sell Baked Alaska in Alaska... coming from an Alaskan who lives here. But we do eat more ice cream per capita than any other state in the United States.

I am lactose intolerant and still eat real ice cream lol. My stomach hates me for it, but yeah, you can't pay me to eat that non-dairy crap! It's just not the same doesn't taste good at all.
Lactase enzyme.... take a dose with your first bite or sip of dairy, and you won't have any regrets.

B&Js 1st location was an old gas station in Burlington, Vermont, in the 70s. They sponsored a music festival at the nearby ski hill, and the cones were 25 cents each (in the 90s). The best ice cream around. Bring back Wavy Gravy, please.

It's not commonly known but the Owners of Ben & Jerry's are a gay couple who had one partner whose tastebuds were less sensitive to taste so they went about inventing a whole series of things that had more intense flavors. They live in Vermont still, nearby another gay couple who own a series of soaps, cosmetics and lotions called Kiss My Face. A friend of mine had an estate nearby and while vistiting I got to meet them all at a dinner party.

@EdinMike LOL, I did an East Coast road trip when I moved out here, and took a friend who had been living in New York without a car for several years. She actually thought we could look at the guidebook the morning we woke up in Maine, see the Desert of Maine for her satisfaction, drive across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont to get to the factory, see the factory. and head back down to Rhode Island two in one day. She had lost all sense of distance and perspective in her years without a car! I told her I would buy her a pint of Ben & Jerry's

I used to live in Burlington, Vermont, home of Ben & Jerry's. Every year, they give out free ice cream on one particular day. People go nuts for it.
Ben And Jerry’s main office and warehouse is 90 minutes from where I grew up. I remember moving to Minnesota and Ben and Jerry’s didn’t hit their til 4 years after I moved there.
I’m a big fan of Non-diary Chocolate Chip dough made with Almond Milk, its now my preference over the others. I’ve tried other Non-diary B&J but Cookie Dough is still my go to
Used to be half baked, but that became too much. Now its vanilla, but if I cant get vanilla, I get pistachio.
I'm lactose intolerant, if I'm facing the consequences for eating ice cream, it's for Half Baked. 💚
Funny, as an American I've never seen any of these flavors in our stores. But go-tos that are always there are Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, Tonight Dough, Half Baked, or Phish Food.
I made a pilgrimage to Burlington Vermont from Illinois to go to Ben & Jerrys headquarters in 1997....

Coffee ice cream has been around a long time. It was Mom's favorite when i was a kid.
I live in Rhode Island. I have seen people approach the ice cream vendor at art fairs Etc and request a double scoop of coffee. When the person working says that they have run out of coffee, people just shrug and turn away. Like, if they can't have coffee flavor, they don't want any
