As an American Southerner I really appreciate these young men and their great manners. By the way, we usually split the biscuit open, into two halves then add the gravy.
To be fair to the young man who wanted some jam, there are a lot of people who prefer to eat their breakfast biscuits with butter and something sweet like jam, jelly, or honey. I’ve found that biscuits are basically great no matter what I’ve put on them.
I prefer my biscuits with butter and a good jam, but I think perhaps the Southern part of the US prefers the gravy. I never took the gravy on biscuits..lol
I love that for years, Josh and Ollie have been mocking the concept of ‘biscuits and gravy’ in random videos. They try it, and liked it so much that now they are trying to convert others 😂
To be fair, those kind of gravy isn't really common outside of the US. I can somewhat understand why it looks a bit off compared with what we usually think of a gravy's appearance.
@@Josua070 Your absolutely right the reason it received such a negative reaction in hearing about it is because they were basically imagining cookies with brown gravy. Then to pile on that white/country gravy doesn't exist there whatsoever gives little cause as to why a mysterious lumpy white liquid is actually good. Not to mention while most comparable to a scone an American biscuit is still very different from them, meaning if they had ever tried a white gravy on a scone it would have been an entirely different experience.
@@Josua070 That sausage gravy is actually a bechamel sauce, which is one of the mother sauces from France. It's called "gravy" because instead of using traditional butter, meat drippings are used.
As an American, I can confirm we put jam on our biscuits and it's amazing! Also try with butter and honey, or just butter. Like scones, they can go sweet or savory.
That Theo kid is an American at heart! He loves this stuff more than his own culture's food! As a Texan, this whole episode had me smiling seeing them enjoy that.

Yup, Buttermilk Biscuits are for soppin'. That is why biscuits (or toast) is served with eggs, to sop up the yokes. Eggs cooked "side up" are the best, lots of runny warm yokes.

I live in the South too (Louisiana), and I love biscuits and sausage gravy. My father-in-law loves coming down for a visit, because he makes sure to get his biscuits and sausage gravy. Their manners about how good it is (these boys) is refreshing
As an American, I can say that obnoxious behavior is present accepted ages in all countries. For example, people here making collective statements about all American teenagers. There's also plenty of idiocy running rampant, such as these same people being somehow baffled that people they've already decided are horrible not being respectful to them.
Believe it or not, but there are a lot of Americans who've never eaten biscuits and gravy. Biscuits and cream or sausage gravy is usually from the South or the southern US. It was a poor person's food, like grits, made with leftovers or the bits of meat, seasonings, and oil left stuck to the bottom of the fry pan that you have to scrape off, but which tastes fantastic because the seasonings are baked in and there are crispy pieces. Then you add cream and flour and salt and pepper to make the gravy, pour it over biscuits or toast, and Voila! You have a quick meal, which is now mostly eaten for breakfast. It's very flavorful. My Mother, who is from Mississippi, made it all the time, especially after she fried a bunch of sausages for breakfast. She'd also make the cream gravy with crumbled-up pieces of sausage init, and then you pull the biscuits into halves, place a piece of (round) sausage on top of each half and pour the cream or sausage gravy a top of if. Yum!!!
They had their first bites of soul food and you literally saw their souls smile through the video. That’s what soul/southern food is all about my babies!
True, but sausage gravy made right is ethereal but made badly can be pretty awful and from past videos by these 2 I'm left to wonder what that gravy really tastes like. Is it a proper example of its kind?
@@prisonerofthehighway1059 Yes, I know and I think I've seen a video where somebody (maybe Josh and Ollie) ate at that guy's restaurant so yes, PROBABLY pretty good. But something about that video I saw, if it's the same guy, just gave me a feeling there were compromises due to being in a place where real American ingredients might not be available (can you say hot dogs in jars?).
@BTinSF biscuits are just flour, butter, and dairy. The sausage is just pork and spices/herbs. Both can be done at a high level pretty much anywhere in the world.
So what ive learned from this is that there is a market for american comfort food in the uk. We can show them the way to enlightenment. One iced cold cup of sweet tea at a time.
Typically southern "gravy" is just flour and pepper in water, really bland and almost flavorless. Go up to the upper midwest and enjoy sausage gravy made with well seasoned Italian or polish sausage. Northern Sausage and gravy is fantastic, southern is generally a disappointment.
@@Steve-tl7zo I grew up in the Swamp of Florida, and I cannot tell you of any occasion in which our "gravy" didnt have pepper, sausage, and other things in with it. @@pasionariaarguello4245 That's not always the case though, just because they're British. As a British person, I can tell you first hand, these kids were raised well, lol!
I lived in England and I think the biggest difference is that they don’t cook with much flavor. Absolutely minimal spices, not a ton of fat (for flavor). In general, it’s fairly bland. So when they eat our food I think it’s a flavor punch in the tastebuds!

Thanks guys for sharing our biscuits & gravy across the pond. I usually serve two cut in half with plenty of gravy on a side plate with a traditional egg breakfast. Southerners eat butter and jam/jelly on biscuits. Honey, too. (And for those in the UK, jelly is clear fruit spread in the style of jam from like grape juice, apple juice, etc.)
As a southerner, watching their sweet faces as they try it made me so happy. Also thank you for actually having a great representation of one of our favorite meals

Yep. Butter or honey or, more likely in my case, preserves or orange marmalade. Embarrassed to admit I actually like McDonalds’ bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. *Much* better than with an English muffin (crumpet to you British types).
For the record, so the British kids know, we *also* have regular brown runny gravy that we eat on turkey and whatnot. The white gravy is pretty much just for things like these biscuits, and fried & breaded chicken steak, and fried & breaded pork steak (kinda like schnitzel). We eat brown gravy like you have in the UK for most other things that call for gravy, we like to put the brown gravy on mashed potatoes too.
@@rotten2209 It's battered and fried like chicken...ie chicken fried steak, chicken fried pork chops, chicken fried bacon....It's all delicious in my book....ha
I love when the one kid asked for jam. It’s actualy quite common to pair your biscuits with a spread of butter and jelly. Most restaurants that serve biscuits will even have jelly packets already on the table for when they bring it out. I was hoping to see that come out, but the one kid was onto something for sure. Glad to see they all liked it
I have always put butter and jam on biscuits. Saskatoon jam is the best. I don’t think I have ever seen them served with gravy. Red Lobster serves them with herbed butter that goes really good with seafood chowder.
In Texas, we have them with butter and preserves or honey as an alternative to gravy (it’s especially nice as a side to fried chicken with the sweet condiments). I wholeheartedly agree with that one young man that a double cream would be fantastic on biscuits, tho. Yum!
@@asquithmainlines699 You’re not from the southern US, though. It’s different in every region, and Canadians would have them with Saskatoon jam, while we typically have them as a full meal with sausage gravy here in the South.
@@sevenandthelittlestmew Yes you are right we would serve fresh baked dinner buns in their place. I probably only have biscuits once or twice a year but I do enjoy them. Some day I would like to visit the south east states and try your cuisine. It all sounds pretty interesting.
The confusion about the nomenclature for American biscuits comes from the dish’s history. Biscuits are a modernized version of hard tack, which people in the American frontier called “biscuits.” They called it that because (like an English biscuit and biscotti) hard tack is baked twice. American frontier people’s used this as a method to preserve it. One would typically make a large quantity of biscuits/hard tack and then soften it with a liquid or sauce when ready to eat. This method of preserving and preparing biscuits/hard tack is what developed into the dish Biscuits and Gravy.
As a southerner, at least where I grew up, we’d open the biscuit and lay it on the plate with the crusty side down, spoon on the sausage gravy and many of us add extra black pepper! Pairs so well with eggs over easy so that the yoke runs into the gravy.
Australian here. My old man has done a lot of business in America and he always tells me the same thing every time we have a BBQ "no one does BBQ like southern USA. They don't cook sausages and their BBQs. They cook 9 course meals with salads, sides, starters, entrees, mains and desserts all on the BBQ"
That's not just the south anymore. Just about every decent cook has a smoker and with a little help from UA-cam, we've become pretty good at smoking meat

@@zydration3538 I gave a compliment to the young men. relax.
Yum!!!

They're both beautiful things but nothing beats a buttery fluffy American buttermilk biscuit
As a Brit living in America, I can attest to the missing out.
Amen to that.
All this goodness is why l'm fat.🤣🤣 l would have love to see them try a buttermilk biscuit and real butter on it. Yum. Molasses and butter mixed on a biscuit. Oh my l 'm going to make a pan in tbe morning.
@@backpackbattles4176 what are “British” foods Americans should try? I’m not too familiar with your guys dishes besides the stereotypical fish and chips and teas.
I’m trying to learn here
What you have to remember is that it is regional. Living in the Midwest, although I've had biscuits, it had never been with gravy until last month and that really doesn't count. It was a vegan version and likely not much like what you are describing.
The biscuits, sausage gravy, and chicken all look perfectly prepared. How are these kids supposed to go back to beans and toast? Also, hats off to Mr. Smith for allowing this demonstration in his school. He should be proud of his well mannered students.
Right!? just horrifies me to think how my Indian bros survive in America 😂
I certainly wouldn't go back to beans and toast! And I never tried beans and toast!
Or* HOT TEA w/no sugar 😂 you just know like that one kid said at home they’re all going to be asking for sweet ice tea 😂😂😂😂
The biscuits are over cooked.
@@deidres100 No, not at all... they're buttered and browned perfectly!!! Nice crispy outside and soft inside.
Yeah, I'm from Alabama in the deep south. We call that "sawmill gravy". We also eat biscuits with tomato gravy, or butter and sorghum or blackstrap molasses.
As a Texan currently living in West Africa, I can’t tell you how much my mouth was watering watching these guys eat biscuits and gravy. Man, I miss southern food!
ok, try Biriyani
Preferably Hyderabadi one
Not from the south but I love biscuits and gravy.
Biscuits loved in Michigan, too. It's not just a Southern thing
As a Texan in Texas I’ll eat a plate for you tmrw morning😂
If they have wheat flour in West Africa, neither biscuits nor gravy are hard to make. You will appreciate the effort put into learning how to make them, and you might become a Big Man if you make it for other people!
Best thing about this video is the change of demeanor these kids have by the end. Exactly what comfort food is supposed to do! They started all stiff and skeptical and by the end relaxed and satisfied. Amazing the effect of good food on all of us. Fantastic video!
@@SocialDelanaomg chicken fried steak and gravy is the perfect lunch after a perfect breakfeast of biscuits and gravy.
Well good tasting food, but let's be real, eating stuff like this is why America is so fat. Biscuits and Gravy? Zero nutritional value. The kind of food that makes you fat.
@@mdillinger2010 the reason Americans are fat are huge protons and easy access to fast food. No ones eating biscuits and gravy every day
@@ditchfood8047 bro what, that's straight food coma territory, even biscuits and gravy is thought of as a breakfast food, it's so hearty and rich that I can't move after 😅
@@mdillinger2010 lack of self-control is why Americans are so fat but high calorie good tasting food certainly does not help.
Also as an American we eat that British gravy too, the runny brown liquid stuf, it’s super good w the mash potatoes that’s a THANKSGIVING CLASSIC
it was mentioned somewhere in the video, you should totally try bangers and mash! All it is is just some sausages on mashed potatoes topped with beef gravy
absolutely amazing, fits right in my southern cook book 🤣
I like the white gravy better myself. Making it from turkey drippings is a staple in my house
Its not "British gravy" it's just brown gravy lolll
@@pinetreepizza that’s what I’m saying! Idk how England can’t comprehend that gravy is just a sauce and there are different sauces. It’s a wonder they don’t see mustard and scream about it not being ketchup
Drizzle some of the brown gravy on a slice of Thanksgiving turkey, or get a fork full of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy in one bite. Maybe, a little stuffing and green bean casserole in that bit, too.
I love these videos! .... The kids are great! ...Being from Alabama I love watching them try the Gravy and chicken combo...lol
"Let's call it interesting for now" such a polite way to say "this looks disgusting" 🤣🤣🤣
They're british
British people are so chill with their choice of words, even when their minds are freaking out over how nice the food are, they'll just say "That's quite nice" or just "Oh lovely"
😂
@@lilypads3033 I know right? And the fact that when they are in trouble they say stuff like "I'm in a bit of a pickle"... I loooove that, so polite.
Tactful understatement is a British cultural tradition.
Seeing the kid smile just from eating it, that’s why it’s called comfort food
As a full blooded American southerner at heart, it warmed my soul seeing how happy it made some of these kids. 🥹
This was a scream to watch. I am a born and raised southerner in the good old USA and it was delightful to see these youngsters, who were skeptical at first, really enjoying our food. And they want to import it! Really fun. Thanks bunches.
This video was a delight! I'm American too, and I have to say, watching this made me smile...and now I'm hungry for biscuits and gravy
@@jenl5988 Me, too!
Nice to see the brits presenting biscuits and gravy accurately for once.
@@jenl5988 I want biscuits and gravy now too
I thank God everyday how blessed I am that my wife is southern and can cook amazingly
We need *more* of these kids❣️ I could watch them all day! 😊
As an American southerner, it warms my heart to see this soul food crossing the pond. The look on the boys faces! Lol. Now I will try some beans and toast.
No to the beans and toast. I know what both taste like and I can't see them together.
Just gotta have the right beans 😎
Growing up poor baked beans and toast😊😊😊
They use the sweet ones don’t use savory
Savory beans and toast is mediocre
Keep in mind, their beans are more tomato based than our baked beans
I notice their mood went from stiff and polite (with strong hints of skepticism) to upbeat and happy as the episode went on and the more American food they ate.
That happens when you eat a lot of sugar 😁
@@s_adalheid Yep. That's what we do in America. We eat sugar. And we like ittttttttt. So we're going to keep doing itttttttttt.
@@nothingtoseehear5012 😂😂 I'm glad for you guys
@@s_adalheid omg no take away his sugar he's had enough
@@s_adalheidI disagree sugar can lead to you often feeling th opposite
These boys are honest but polite. I enjoyed watching them describe how much they enjoyed their food and politely asked for more.
The fact that they asked for more confirmed that they weren't just being polite and saying that it tasted good. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that teen aged boys, eating machines that they are, would ask for more. :D
This is adorable and makes me happy♥️
"it actually makes me happy how good it is" you sir, have just defined soul food 😂
Right😂
Perfect definition
Right?? Like same as comfort food
Precisely 🎉
Such facts
As a born and raised Georgia person I'm glad that they are enjoying true southern food.
Southern food they serve as far north as Chicago
As a Californian i hate everyone
Soul food 🙄🤡
@@AnastasiaBeaverhousn I’m from NY originally, biscuits and gravy, grits… definitely a Southern thing lol!
@@adolphhitlerdemocratcreep They obviously can serve it anywhere but that doesn't mean it doesn't come from the south. I can get fajitas at my local shop, does that mean it's not Mexican?
I lived in England for 6 months about 25 years ago. When one of my English friends came to America to visit, I took him to my grandmothers house for an authentic southern cooked meal. He was completely blown away by Mimi’s cooking! We had it all! Snap beans, mashed potatoes, meatloaf, cornbread and biscuits with jelly were on the menu if I recall correctly. I’d give anything to have my Mimi and her amazing cooking today. My grandmother was the most loving and gentle woman I’ve ever known. I’m so glad Edmund got that experience. “Love is the key ingredient” was something she liked to say.
Southern cooking is the best.
Your comment is so very kind. At 71 years of age, I still miss my own grandmother and her cooking.
My grandma could cook boot leather and it would be amazing👍👍
💖thanks for sharing this sweet comment!!
I had a Southern grandma who cooked like that too. I still think about her biscuits and skillet fried okra. Such good memories.
This is why I love the internet. As an American, it’s so crazy (in a funny interesting way) that biscuits and gravy is unusual to them lol
I've always loved how Brits and Americans relentlessly make fun of each other, but deep down we're cousins just having a laugh and both enjoy a good meal :)
Here I am drinking sweet tea and going to be making biscuits and gravy tomorrow for lunch 😂 Gotta love it! I have a British friend and the one thing she can’t get on board with is PB&J 😂
Alrighty! as long as ya'll promise to make us some French Fries 🤠 🇺🇸 🏇
@@4everloved142Who doesn’t like PB&J?! That’s like not loving bacon.😢
I keep my hands in my pockets when around the red coats.
Cousins? The UK is closer to an abusive mother who had a change of heart after a drawn-out bankruptcy only to be bailed out by her most successful child.
3:17 "you wouldn't just drink gravy by itself"
Kid:" i would"
That's my man right there
If you’ve ever been to Dairy Queen and you’ve gotten the white gravy, I’ve drank a cup of gravy from there, absolutely life changing
Where I come from gravy is a beverage 😂
gravy smoothie
BOWL OF GRAVY!
That brown gravy he's talking about is... well... pretty damn good. I get it. I prefer it, frankly, and I'm Texan.
When they enjoy something and say “it’s quite nice” it makes them seem so grownup and polite. I love it. 💕
Reminds me of Gordon Ramsay
I love how “proper” they are ❤
I'm SO glad yall threw in the chicken at the end. Really pulls it together to make a proper American flavor experience. I'm from the south and the one meal I'd ask my mom to make when she came around was Fried chicken in an iron skillet, with biscuits from scratch, and lumpy home made mashed potatoes with white gravy made from the used fried chicken grease. Literally the most satisfying meal I could ever eat.
Oooo i gotta try it with the chicken grease! Usually make mine with bacon and the grease from that
Yup, only thing missing was lumpy, buttery mashed potatoes lol
Yes sir 🤠
Bojangles represent
Mmm throw in some sweet corn on the cob too🥰🤤
