I used to think store bought pistachio ice cream didn't taste like pistachios, until I made my own with pistachios and it still tasted like store bought pistachio ice cream. It kind of blew my mind.
It's because a lot of nuts have this kind of flavor profile that changes drastically when you add sugar to it. Try it with almonds sometime. Sweet almond flavors are really close to cherry, it's weird.

I _cannot_ stand fruit in ice cream, yogurt, or any other sort of creamy treat. Look, I love an apple, a banana, or a bowl of blueberries, but fruit just _does not_ work in ice cream or yogurt for me. And they do not survive in an ice cream very well. Their presence is an insult. I'm just trying to enjoy some nice, creamy ice cream, and then I feel them, those frozen solid pieces of sin (especially if they're smaller pieces), and I just want to spit them out right then and there. They're so wrong texture-wise, the flavor doesn't add anything, and they don't even provide a nice crunch because usually they're so inedible you feel like you'd break a tooth if you tried biting down on them. I just don't see the appeal at all. As abhorrent as they are in ice cream, it's not much better when it comes to yogurt especially because if I ever want some, I have to go out of my way to make sure I don't get one with fruit chunks in it because so many have them. As someone who used to work at a Ben and Jerry's stand, Peanut Butter Cup is an absolute nightmare to scoop. Those chunks are so large and hard, and the ice cream itself is so grainy and crumbly, I hated it so much.
You're the first person I've ever seen who feels the same way I do about chocolate ice cream. Everyone else seems to really love it. But I hate it. It does absolutely overpower everything.
The funny thing is that there's SOME chocolate ice cream I love, but they're the exception. I think the difference is that they were made with actual chocolate or cocoa, and the end product is something where you can taste both the sweet cream and actual cocoa separately, if that makes sense. The problem is most chocolate ice cream is made either with chocolate that's very, VERY syrupy, or just straight up chocolate syrup. It costs the whole thing in a sickly-sweet, almost acidic taste that never quite leaves your mouth until after like, two glasses of water. Vanilla ice cream doesn't have that problem, because by necessity, it CAN'T overwhelm your senses. It costs too much, AND it's very powerful in small amounts. The flavor can be faked, but even then, it still needs to be added in similar amounts to regular vanilla, or it quickly becomes VERY unpalatable to everyone, even people who are absolute flavor whores for vanilla. TL;DR: I think it's the chocolate syrup. Vanilla doesn't have this problem since it's too expensive, and even then, lots of vanilla, fake or not, doesn't taste good.
So many different "versions" of chocolate taste like dirt to my palate, particularly in ice cream form. As one non-frozen example, Hershey's bars taste absolutely awful to me. I don't know how people enjoy them, but to each their own. There are a few exceptions with what I'd call "good" chocolate flavor, but I honestly don't know what makes them different. I generally avoid chocolate ice cream for this reason, though. I don't ever know if it will taste fine or hit me like a big bite of top soil.

I’m vegan, so I’ve been having non-dairy Ben and Jerry’s ice cream for about 3 years at this point, honestly best vegan ice cream I’ve ever tasted. A lot of other brands use coconut milk which is _way_ easier to taste than almond milk and it gets old really fast.

When I was in college Ben and Jerry's had a flavor called Southern Pecan Pie and it was SO GOOD! It's been over 20 years and I still miss it. But then again, Phish Food is my 2nd favorite flavor so what do I know?

I’m genuinely surprised by his reaction to the non-dairy ones. I went for many years without dairy products, and when I discovered the Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy stuff, it was the only non-dairy ice cream I’ve ever tasted that was as good as the real stuff. Most non-dairy ice creams are full of ice crystals are are too “healthy” tasting.
Pistachio ice cream isn't actually pistachio flavoured, its almond flavoured. You use almond extract as the flavouring for the ice cream, exactly like how maraschino cherries are soaked in almond extract

They've been selectively bred to have the most "meat" on their fruit, but the smallest seeds (black parts in the middle) to the point of infertility. You can still grow them by taking the cuttings of a banana tree and replanting them, and it'll essentially grow as a clone of the original. Great for making bananas whose fruits are almost all the parts we eat them for, but HORRIBLE for genetic diversity, and thus survivability. Almost all bananas eaten are clones. Thus, still very at risk for extinction, at least for those that are commercially produced.

Ice cream tastes sweeter when melted as freezing sugar takes away some of the intensity of the sugar so they add extra sugar to remedy this. Therefore melted ice cream tastes overly sweet. To make this a fairer test they should've been frozen properly, not melty.

I’m vegan, so I’ve been having non-dairy Ben and Jerry’s ice cream for about 3 years at this point, honestly best vegan ice cream I’ve ever tasted. A lot of other brands use coconut milk which is _way_ easier to taste than almond milk and it gets old really fast.
I got the wrong one from the store once (milk and cookies) and it was actually OK. I expected it to just be bad for me

I'm lactose intolerant, so if Ben and Jerry's didn't have any non dairy options I'd be absolutely boned. Like, every other brand just tastes....if "unsettling" were a taste, that's how I'd describe them.

When I was in college Ben and Jerry's had a flavor called Southern Pecan Pie and it was SO GOOD! It's been over 20 years and I still miss it. But then again, Phish Food is my 2nd favorite flavor so what do I know?

I went for many years without dairy products, and when I discovered the Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy stuff, it was the only non-dairy ice cream I’ve ever tasted that was as good as the real stuff. Most non-dairy ice creams are full of ice crystals are are too “healthy” tasting.

Pistachio ice cream isn't actually pistachio flavoured, its almond flavoured. You use almond extract as the flavouring for the ice cream, exactly like how maraschino cherries are soaked in almond extract

@Weirder than usual Just looked it up, they’re called Gros Michel bananas. They are grown locally in Florida, South Carolina and Hawaii. Sorry about that, I remember originally reading that there was only like one place that grew them. Still very scarce though.

The bananas we eat are actually very infertile. They've been selectively bred to have the most "meat" on their fruit, but the smallest seeds (black parts in the middle) to the point of infertility.
You can still grow them by taking the cuttings of a banana tree and replanting them, and it'll essentially grow as a clone of the original. Great for making bananas whose fruits are almost all the parts we eat them for, but HORRIBLE for genetic diversity, and thus survivability.
Almost all bananas eaten are clones. Thus, still very at risk for extinction, at least for those that are commercially produced.

Ice cream tastes sweeter when melted as freezing sugar takes away some of the intensity of the sugar so they add extra sugar to remedy this. Therefore melted ice cream tastes overly sweet. To make this a fairer test they should've been frozen properly, not melty.

Ben and Jerry's are my favourite ice cream, I have a condition that makes every flavour very mild, so this are really good with their intence flavour.
And they all have such great textures too!

I'm not a fan of Ben and Jerry's. It's probably because I'm used to Handel's Ice Cream which is absolutely phenomenal (and not hard as a brick). If you find a Handel's don't pass it up!

I'm glad you realized that Americone Dream is amazing. Also, I hate chocolate ice cream because it tastes nothing like chocolate. It's just kind of bitter and strong tasting, but not good.
Finally, someone who understands! I don't hate chocolate ice cream, but I don't care for it either. But every time I tell people I don't care for how 'bitter' it is, they give me weird looks. Like, it doesn't taste like actual chocolate at all! I'd rather eat vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce or hot fudge than chocolate ice cream.
