Here is the 2023 update: The restaurant is closed, not due to bad reviews or poor performance but seemingly because John Esposito (the owner) wanted to retire. Which is impressive, survived for a little over 10 years after the episode (better than most) and survived a pandemic and still it was only because the owner wanted to retire that it closed.
Thanks for sharing it
He had a good run.
i only got the information about the pizzeria being closed - i mean i only looked on google but there it says it opens @2 pm ...
That's cool!
eh, id say it was the pandemics fault, but he says he wants to retire to keep his pride. A "you're not firing me i quit" sort of thing.

2. Mechanic
3. Gordon Ramsey

2: The Mechanic
3: Chef Ramsey
4: your parents
5: your Wife / husband / partner

This ep was just sad. He wasn't stubborn because of pride, he was stubborn because it worked in the past with his mum and dad and he wants to carry on their memory in some way :( I'm so happy to learn the restaurant did well after this. He deserves the world.
I think he was stuck because his parents ruined him in a way. They had him working there since he was 8, they had him working there all his life, he didn't have the chance to get a real education, make his own choice, no wonder the man got stuck in his way, it's not like he had the chance to learn anything else
@DimT670 facts they set this kid up for failure
@@ericbelota1849Yeah and that was okay enough when they were still around, but a lot of parents forget that they'll die before their kids do (unless something tragic happens), and don't think about what their lives'll be like without them

This episode is so heartwarming. WAIT THIS EPISODE ISN'T 5 YEARS OLD I'M ACTUALLY NOT LATE
The way he remodeled the restaurant was perfect. Kept the owners memories intact, while making the place new and his own. Fuck this episode was such a roller coaster of emotions
The show didn't remodel, they cheaped out. Never trust Hollywood. They painted half the walls, enough to cover camera angle and used paper that looks real on TV.
it was excellent !! almost more of a refresh than a remodel.
The fact that the chef was the one who sent out the rotten lobster and smelt the uncooked one and claimed "oh yeah, ammonia, that will kill someone" but never received any shite for it and in any other episode would have been ripped to shreds by Gordon still upsets me 4 years later. Like regardless of an owners negligence, the chef sent it out!

*this is what insanity feels like*
I actually agree with the manager i love when places present deserts. What would be insane is to keep fresh deserts behind a glass every day and then throw it away losing money.
Displaying desserts that way is super stupid because:
1) leaving them mold and stink will make people disgusted at the idea of ordering one
2) it's a big waste of time having someone presenting them one by one with an example (which isn't even indicative of the final product as the freaking ice cream was shown with a big spoon of butter) in each table.
If you want to present your desserts you either have photographs of them on the menu or, even better, have them clearly displayed in a fridge in the dining room, so customers will see what actually gets served to them and it also helps waiters know how many portions they have left.
@@nonnoumby deserts don't really stink, except ice cream which is why they placed butter. I couldn't tell the diffrence on the video, further more you think food for ads involves just food? Of course not, real food naturally does not look that good.
She brought a entire tray full of them not 1 by one, and pictures of food on a menu look horrible to me because it is actual food on a plate. I saw a few where they mock up the food and then they take a picture of it which does make it look nicer then the food you will get. Just like every food ad ever.
*Do you know what insanity is?*
@@tossacointoyourwitcherOriginal When they get moldy they stink, that's the hard truth, and having mold ANYWHERE in a restaurant is a serious hazard. That waiter that shows them to you with her bare hands also serves food to the rest of the restaurant.
You talk about how photographs of food is done in a way to make it better than it is misleading the customer (which I never denied) but then defend using completely different things such as BUTTER as ice cream. At that point just use a plastic prope which will never get moldy or stink, or the clearly visible fridge I mentioned which I pointed out as the best option and you clearly ignored lmao.

Really emotional episode. The owner was so stricken with grief, unable to let go, and just let it consumed him until problems slowly keeps piling up on and on. It really is painful to lose people that you hold dear, I hope everyone who currently goes through the same the best
Gordon looked absolutely shellshocked when John accepted full responsibility for the mismanagement of the kitchen. No defensive attitude, no hostility, just "it's my fault" and then the most sincere plea for help I've seen on this show. So glad the business is still open and doing well.
The place just recently closed down due to the owner wishing to retire actually, so best of luck to him
@@ohyeahyeah879 At least he got to bow out on his own terms then. And if he had enough money to retire then all the more proof that they were doing alright at the end.

The fact they hid camera's and microphones outside means a lot of what was recorded like that was most likely not fake. With this show you can easily tell when something feels forced or fake A LOT of what is shown in this episode in particular does not at all seem fake.
Also, something about the re-decorations. I feel like I have not once really seen Ramsey actually go all out like he did with this place. He gave them new tables and walls as he usually does. But he even gives them a new board rather than cover. He gives him a special custom made artwork piece for the back wall. Photo's of the restaurant from years back. Table covers in the form of newspapers of old with the old headlines and even wordings, photo's of his dad, himself, and even his mother. The amount of love that went into the redesign is absolutely unbelievably heartfelt. Also giving him a new shirt as well, specifically and specially made for him.
Not only that but Ramsey even uncharacteristically went from his usual strict, stern British douchey self. To someone who clearly knew that that method wouldn't work here, that this isn't a business failing because of a stupid, poor, or general owner who could give less than two shits. It was an owner who gave too much of a shit, who loved everything he grew up with, who had such a strong attachment to everything it became so unbearably hard for him to let it go. I am pretty sure that resonated within Gordon himself. Since from what I know about Gordon, he absolutely loves his mother, although his tastes for her food has declined, he still eats it out of the love and respect he has for her.
Lastly, the fact he eventually retired, and didn't give his business to HIS kids, really shows he finally learned to let go. To give his kids the choice to do and make themselves what he wasn't able to. And honestly, unlike many of the businesses on the show, this was one of the very few I've seen that deserved a comeback. I am honestly glad that it lasted another 10 years before he closed it down, and the fact it even survived a pandemic as well.

I feel his pain, it's not easy when you feel obligated to help your family, especially when you've fallen into a routine and you don't see the damage your causing yourself
Frankly as a chef, The Head Chef is so good. He execute the new menu perfectly, control everything in kitchen. The Owner would not need Gordon, If he was just listen to the chef.
Yeah exactly
He's also not arrogant and brutally honest. He got stuck up with frozen ingredients and do whatever John said.
Apparently it takes a fucking world famous 5 star chef just for him to listen
With kitchen nightmares it’s almost always an overbearing owner that causes the problems. The owner writes the menu and stops the chef from doing their job of being an actual chef. Eventually, the chef realizes that they have no power and they give up trying.
Yeah, but Gordon is more than just someone who dishes out advice (har har) - as has been said a million times over, he's also a therapist. That's what John really needed.
My heart breaks for this man. Didn’t put the blame on anyone but himself. That’s a true man. It’s hard to let go, but you have to move with the times. I wish him nothing but success for his mental health, his heart and his family and employees

Had the pleasure to eat at the pizzeria during Fleet Week 2017 . Great pizza, happy to hear the place survived until Jon decided to retire
Gordon: The food is disgusting, the fridge is contaminated, the decor is hideous
That guy: *It is for presentation only*
😆 I feel bad for laughing at that.
One of the things I think people are underappreciating regarding John's resistance to change is that when he's told he's doing it wrong and needs to do it differently, that he's trying to do everything like his parents did. Meaning, when he's told "you're doing things wrong," he's probably hearing "your parents were doing it wrong."
Man I feel so bad for John, I'm glad he's turned things around and is still going
They recently closed at February 2023 :( But they had a successful run with their restaurant!
John: "If somebody came to your house and you cooked them a dinner, how would you feel if they started puking all over?"
Well, I'm fairly certain that most normal people with common sense and integrity wouldn't serve their guests ammonia laden lobster carcasses, or other rancid foods that would cause them to contract a serious foodborne illness.
People always thought Gordon Ramsey is a dickhead, but this man is a true teacher. The more you watch him the more you understand that he’s not trying to be aggressive, he’s just trying to provide guidance
Shoutout to Kitchen Nightmares and shoutout to John and Mamma Maria’s team 👏🏽
i compare him so much to joe bastianich. it's chefs like that I have 0 respect for.
Gordon Ramsey is epic. Often he’s the only reasonable person around in these episodes. The staff is unbelievably stupid
Absolutely!!!
I have seen in an episode of... Hell's Kitchen I think(?) Gordon saying something about "You give me this and it hurts in my heart" and I believe that's the key to it all. He knows how good a dish can be if it's cooked with proper care, and then someone bungle it up and it really does hurt in his heart. / B.
@@mbo191 he’s also really good at spotting potential. he knows how well someone can do and if they’re underperforming
Gordon's capability to read people and adjust his own behaviour to the situation is quite extraordinary. Chefs in Hell's Kitchen and his own places looking for absolute perfection? Kick their asses because they need to be tough to survive in a cuthroat business. A guy hurting over the loss of his parents, trying to keep his small restaurant together? Firm, forceful but still obviously caring guidance.

This has to be one of my all time favorite episodes simply because John the owner embodies everything that this show SHOULD be. An owner who let their restaurant fall below acceptable standards yet took full responsibility and was open minded to change. Change that allowed his restaurant to succeed for another decade.
Yeah, it may also have something to do with how heartwarming and sincere this owner was about his past that brought me to tears.
did some searching and this episode aired on november 2012, the restaurant closed on february 2023 because john decided to retire. it was still running for over 10 years since the release date, i’m glad john was able to pull through and improve.
*Ambulance comes in*
John: Kill the cameras
Cameramen: I missed the part where that's my problem
They should've, out of respect to the dude being taken to the hospital. Pretty unfair that they even filmed him while he was feeling like puking his guts out.
Made my day 🤣
They did kill the cams. The clips after were a summary of what happened
Image. Same reason he tried to mislead the paramedics into thinking it was an allergic reaction.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW UPDATE:
Mama Marias and Sals Pizzeria is still open and going strong. They currenly boast very good ratings on most websites including 4/5 stars on Trip Advisor, and 4.7/5 stars on google reviews. People seem to love the food, atmosphere, history and service to this day. The pizza seems to be a highlight. Overall the restaurant has survived the worst of their rough days, Covid and seem to be doing good. Some reviews didnt love the italian food, some didnt love the slices but overall the majority of reviews are amazing. Its noted that the seafood is still frozen. According to Kitchen Nightmares website, old customers have returned, some tweaks were made to Gordons recipes and overall business is up 10% as of 2019 (pre-covid)
Thanks for the update.

This episode was heartbreaking .
Yes
“It’s 2012 John”. Now I feel old.
I almost came to tears when the owner told Gordon he sacrificed his education to work at the restaurant along side he's late parents.....ok after the heart to heart sit-down Gordon had with him, "I cried"😭
Definitely feel his pain , but his parents wouldn’t want him like this and he has too realise , I think he’s still grieving, bless him
I don't like how he both holds the restuarant as a shrine to his parents, but then blames them for why he is the way he is and they made him work like a donkey and etc etc. The guy has serious emotional issues, he both resents his parents and puts them on some insane pedastal. He has a strange child like quality to him, guy seriously needs therapy.
@@defiante1 it’s the immigrant child experience lol. You both love your parents dearly but hate stuff that they made you do in order to better than overall family, it’s a different mindset and culture than Americans.
@@kaiofthestorm7168 not really, stop generalizing
my grandmother had to leave school because she had to work to help her family...she was 13, just a year younger than John was. she was the kindest person I've ever met but she was ashamed of that. even when she was writing she would apologize for it not being good enough because of her education. Funny thing is, she had beautiful handwriting.
i love how gordon is flabbergasted by the owner's acceptance of fault and responsibility.
Well...Most of the time the restaurant owners either have an attitude or they are in complete denial...
Not this time...So maybe Gordon Ramsay was completely surprised because he expected to give the other person a full speech...
Gordon: 😦
mhmm, that's why he's hardly yelling he's just bemused
It is good but at least the owner admits it’s his fault and not try blame staff like most do
Sadly Mama Marias closed this year February 2023 because John wanted to retire but he still did a great job at running it for so long :)
i feel for the owner, he just wanted his parents
I felt that man's pain.. he clearly misses his mum and dad and felt he couldn't do it without their guidance.. he was still the pizza boy they made him... Great to see him step up his mum and dad would be proud.. I hope he is still making a success of his place.. Good luck.
the place is open, last time I checked. It truly hit deep when you see how John was so broken man but when Gordon comforted, it truly had an impact, it shows that when needed, Gordon can truly be the voice of reason/the light to the darkness.
@@Cynderfan35 it actually one of the few restaurant that are still open and successful it's really awesome
. Also if I'm not mistaken the guy has tiktok talking about pizzas 😂
Occasionally I rewatch episodes and this one gets me emotional nearly every time. It's just heartbreaking.
It's not incompetence or ignorance to a weaponised degree. Just an owner that was out of his depth and couldn't see it till he had one heck of a wakeup.
I'm glad to see in the comments that the restaurant carried on and wasn't beyond saving, as many are.
@@Nolascana Right? I'm glad this is one of the few that made it. It's good to see.
The owner is another person I love on this episode. He doesn't sit in denial. He doesn't make excuses. He doesn't become defensive over every little thing he's been holding onto. He acknowledges it. He explains it. He takes accountability and he embraces the way he feels for his parents and their legacy left behind in his hands.
He's broken, and he knows he is broken. He's not cocky, or an idiot, he just needs help.
and the good things is this resturant(please correct m spelling) stills runs until today and its getting a lot of good review.
This episode made me sooo emotional my god what a beautiful man
14:20
John: It worked before. Why can't it work now?
Gordon: Well, you were running on nostalgia; it stood still......You're in love with the memories, John.
That hit close to home. 😢
This owner was such a sweet genuine man. I hope he’s happy today and spending all his time with his family.
29:04 “since my parents died” omg i did not expect it to get emotional so suddenly.. that hit me
Same thoughts.. until the camera cut to Gordon’s face and he was so shocked it was comical
This episode is so touching, 'How long has that been here, since my parents died.'
My tears suddenly fall down like a fountain, I can see the owner really loves his family.
I love how when John said to throw out the sign, Gordon told him to take it home instead 😭
Even his staff knows what his problem is. The best part about it is when the owner say to throw em out, even both his employee and gordon tell him no.
I love the new decor of the restaurant
Man that hit me like a truck.
It's the wrong kind of love though, it kept him stuck!
Update: It was doing well but it closed in February 2023 because John wanted to retire
The conversation at 29:45 had me tearing up man. You can tell John has a heart unlike most of the other owners on this show.
John was clearly struggling so much throughout this, sometimes people never cope with loss. Was good to see him take ownership of mistakes and such though, I hope he is doing better now. Also Joe seemed very knowledgeable and sensible, just held back by the owners menu. Hope they all gained some form of success after this happened

The way the manager struggles to ask how to tell the customers and Gordon just explaining so clearly and nicely.
Gordon is truly the hero we deserve
Yeah I was just thinking this, Gordon is pissed, but still tells him calmly he should call an ambulance, tell the customers he's shutting down, and not to charge anyone. This is probably the worst case scenario for any restraint owner and despite the apathy and negligence John displayed Gordon helps him navigate this crisis.
Finally an humble owner who owns up to his mistakes fast. I’m rooting for this guy.
The heart-to-heart between Gordan and John really brought tears to my eyes. The family pictures, the same reaction, what a special touch.
Now this is a classic episode. And I know there's only five days left, but I hope all you guys and everyone who's running this channel have a very merry and safe Christmas.

What saved this restaurant after Ramsey was gone is the fact that John has very good staff.
