im glad im not the only person that remembers the rage entity growing at the centre of earth still...really seems like on a whole green lanterns really not doing too hot on representation for the other lantern corps and that makes me sad. as for my feelings on ion, I more or less like what johns did with the whole thing around living emotional entities and I understand comics can get super confusing due to them not being entirely to one persons sole vision with a character, but I think that the idea couldve been adapted into the emotional spectrum a lot worse and for what its worth I am glad they didnt just make up some new name for a willpower entity and decided to try and tie ion in that way the same as parallax.
Agreed. A big part of the fun of the Johns era was exploring how different elements were connected, so I'm always up for that. Realistically, they could fix all of the ion confusion with one page of exposition, they'd just need to put more thought into it than they did before.
@@MosaicComics yeah, though it’d be a strange exposition since Ion isn’t around anymore as if I’m not mistaken all of the entities save parallax gave their lives to refuel the reserves beyond the source wall in lights out. Maybe they could try to cannonize the past somehow by needing to make a “new ion” as without an emotional entity something bad could end up happening.
if I wanted to stretch I could say that the ion entity is pasive because will power is more of a fuel or boost to an action and not the action in itself, that is why the ion entity is passive and is more suited to boosting already existing power
That does make sense, and I think that's a great way of looking at Willpower's relationship with the other powers of the Emotional Spectrum, especially Hope.
Great video, I didnt read much of the Kyle run. I love the entities and I hope to see them again. I think all the retcons for "ion" and "parralax" was a great idea. Although I didn't Start reading ANY GL until sinestro war so my pov is a little different
Perhaps it was just my brain trying to make sense of DC's inane BS, but I always read this as Ion was living inside the central battery alongside the imprisoned Parallax when Hal absorbed all of its power, so when Hal died Ion was there in that power that merged with Oblivion. Thus Kyle Ion with the ability to truly tap into Ion's full power because it was everything. With the central battery, guardians, and corps restored Kyle's second stint as Ion didn't have the near-limitless power it did the first time, but it was still stronger than any normal GL. As to why Kyle became the host again in that one panel... uh... well in the words of another UA-camr "so the plot can happen."
I had NO IDEA how powerful Ion is until I saw this video!! I started reading Green Lantern upon reading GL Rebirth so yea.....Im here thinking it was just a cosmic space whale-fish 😅. This doesn't upset me. In fact this video has empowered me to read more Green Lantern books , especially the older runs before the Geoff Johns run. 💚💚💚💚
Good video! very informative. I think those problems are unavoidable when you have too many ideas and different writers. If you allow me a suggestion, would be good to see a video about Terry Berg, the Green Lantern that never was. They put a lot of effort and time building up a good character, and all that work was all suddenly abandoned.
When it comes to Ion and this entity. I believe that the mass of green energy allowed Ion to materialize there and stay there but then became the power battery and after all that Ion was discovered by the guardians so they seeked out a new vessel but the mix of magic and green energy with it being kyle called out to this surge and the guardians just allowed it to go.
My theory is that when Hal and Kyle originally became godlike in zero hour and power of ion respectively, they carried a combination of the 2 entities (and possibly the starheart) with parallax being dominant which powered oblivion as well. Both entities were then stuck on the sun with Hal but Kyle absorbed ion and a mix of parallax’s power. And with ion gone, parallax was able to come back fully in GL rebirth. It would explain why they were less powerful when they carried the entities separately later on. Otherwise, I completely agree with your theory at the end (which I think is pretty simple compared to other ideas and what I’ve always imagined the explanation being). Kyle becoming ion again is because he had split the entity amongst him, Jade and the central power battery and during infinite crisis, the guardians secretly gave him the battery portion beforehand (so that he could bring the entity back) and once Jade died, Kyle had a fully powered ion entity. I’ve always wanted a writer to come in and explain this stuff but your video does a great job explaining ion! Btw, do you like the entities or are you glad they’re “dead”? I’ve always liked them and imagined them coming back by using the remnants left in Kyle and the process atrocitus used in dc rebirth.
The entities are great, the only bad thing about them is they don't get used or explored nearly enough. That's why I want them to pick up the thread of the Rage Seed so badly, the ability to follow a new Entity from birth is an opportunity to learn a lot more about them.
I agree with Ken here. Parallax: Hal (influenced/infected by Parallax) heads to Oa and ABSORBS the battery. Within said Battery is (presumably) Parallax who he nows bonds with fully, and Ion (otherwise how else does Ion get into the sun? If that's the idea.) Ion DOES NOT equal the power in the central power battery. We know the two are different things. Ok check on Hal having as much power as he does. Two entities and the power of the entire Corps. That makes sense. Kyle becoming Ion: PRETTY clear he absorbs Ion, and whatever Corps Battery energy Hal leaves in the sun. He also absorbs Oblivion (who you make a point of distinguishing between Oblivion and other power so...two different things). The question is, Hal DIES and leaves power in the sun. DOES HE LEAVE PARALLAX? You could say yes (just in a diminished state given the energy expenditure required to re-ignite the sun. That would help explain Kyles near godlike ability (After all, Hal is responsible for Zero Hour...more evidence of godlike ability when these things are combined). But....is that TRULY what happened to Parallax ala Rebirth? We know Hal becomes the Spectre but rebirth tells us Spectre is bonded to Hal because Hals soul is still bonded to Parallax and Parallax cannot be left unchecked. This tells us Parallax likely WASN'T left in the sun. OR you could take both explanations. Kyle absorbs the energy in the sun (which in this scenario includes Parallax), does his Ion thing, then returns it in issue 150. THEN Spectre bonds with Hal and Parallax (who is either in the battery and senses Hal, or returned to Hal the minute Kyle gave up the power). IDK....welcome to fanboy theory. Bottom line, you know I love THE POWER OF ION. Confusing hellscape aside? I'll never not love that story.
@@TheNerdFonz Rebirth seems to make it clear that Parallax was glued to Hal’s soul after he died, which was the only reason the Spectre bonded to Hal in the first place, so I think it’s safe to say there was no Parallax left behind near the sun.
@@MosaicComics That would be fantastic. I'm not sure if I want a second generation of entities but having them reborn and actually better explained would be great. Something I wish they would do is connect the entities to other heroes like Hawk and Dove, Bunker, and the starheart.
I've got a feeling they will be bringing Ion back in the next couple of issues of the latest GL run. In this case, it will be Hal Jordan as host. It wouldn't surprise me they also redesign Ion from the fish looking thing to something else.
I always thought of the entities as being a sentient manifestation of their respective light. As in, directly connected to that light. It wouldn't surprise me if entities could travel within the power battery ring system into a host. That's just a bunch of assumptions on my part though.
There's no reason they couldn't, since that how Parallax took control of the entire Green Lantern Corps during "War of the Green Lanterns". Maybe it's just harder to do, since it's a narrow pathway that covers a huge distance.
It's a good video except for the fact that it makes me confront the reality of what they ended up doing with my favorite story. The original Ion story is so well done, it's sad how bad the miniseries went. And at the end of the day, putting it in Sodam Yat, the one person who least needed it. I don't remember him ever doing anything with the powers that be couldn't just as easily do with a regular ring.
He did use it to give Daxam a yellow sun, and the mix of his Superman powers + the ion power is what let him do as well as he did against Superboy Prime. Beyond that, they held it back a lot.
