You know the scene in Hellboy 2 where Hellboy and Abe are drunkenly singing along to a tune while slumped on the floor? Constantine would fit into that picture seamlessly.
@@Razer5542 You are right about that one lol. He shares some similar traits to Batman(detective work, prep time), but John's in a class of his own, honestly.
Yes and no. If you were to put someone like Darkseid versus somebody like the question yeah Darkseid seems really overpowered but when you put him against somebody like Superman it evens out. I honestly just think the power scale of most heroes and villains is a little bit higher in DC than it is Marvel, and that's not saying that Marvel characters are weaker, Marvel's heroes and villains are relatively equally matched but so is DC if it's the right combinations.
@@spencil9941 yeah there's definitely characters I could have used instead of darkseid that would have got my point across but at the same time when you think of Darkseid losing its usually Superman delivering the last few blows (with help, you got me there)
Allot of this stuff is from the Rebirth and New 52 story lines. They took Constantine and turned him into a faux Dr Strange. In the Vertigo Hellblazer comics, Constantine gets by with his wit, he barely uses magic. He makes deals with devil's and angels and eventually they go to cash in on the deals but Constantine constantly makes deals staying one step ahead of those trying to get him. For example, when he conjures a demon to fight another demon, the summoned demon hunts down Constantine. Constantine falls in love with Zed and Zed is set to be mated with angels. Constantine makes a deal with a demon, getting it's blood inside him. Constantine sleeps with Zed so the demon blood will be in her and then when the angels sleep with her they go on a rampage and kill the people who set Zed up to mate with them. Now Constantine owes this demon something and he eventually comes to collect but Constantine makes a deal with Swamp Thing to get the demon off his back. The thing about Constantine is he is always making deals and he knows one day demons and angels will seek to cash in. This is what makes his story attractive because every choice Constantine makes has good and bad repercussions, and you know with each choice he makes the actions will come back to haunt him. One last thing: you always see him standing outside of Hell or at the Gates of Heaven. This leads readers to believe that Constantine is finally answering for his actions but as you know, he always has a trick up his sleeve
One of constantines oldie but goodies co.es to mind "make a deal with a demon, call in a favor with an angel, drink with the devil and chat with god. How you ask, well anything is possible when hell wants your soul and heaven owes you some favors"
You could of easily said what you tried to say without overly explaining nonsense. Seriously man wtf. Just say Constantine has both dumb luck and finds a way to stay one step ahead of his ever evolving bullshit around him

My favorite Constantine moments are when he telepathically showed that annoying magic club full of fanboys how each member would die which drove them all insane and the time he crushed up Santa Claus' bones then snorted them for a little extra magic juice. I loved the Vertigo run.😁😁😁
@@oldmanjenkins771 St Nicholas. I dunno where he's buried, probably Turkey, but John went off to some church somewhere, cracked the floor, and dug up St Nicholas. The fame of St Nicholas / Santa, John managed to turn into immense power by snorting his crushed-up bones. He did the thing in the Tate Club by having a mate bury a hair from his head in the Garden of Eden. He managed to call up the angel who defends Eden, and he came and made a bit of a mess of a bunch of dick magicians at the club's 200th anniversary celebration.
My favourite involves Swamp Thing, who manifested himself in a pile of tobacco, while casually talking to him, John took a pinch of the tobacco manifestation for his smoke😂

Emese Molnar-Kovacs That's because the HP universe in general isn't that powerful when compared to other magic utilizing universes. JK designed that universe to be hyper realistic despite the fantasy elements. People can't truly come back from the dead, magic can't cure everything, etc. It's almost a fantasy parallel to real life. I kinda like that about it too because the magic system is strict and unlike most anime and comics don't pull random abilities out of its ass when the plot calls for it.
Emese Molnar-Kovacs That statement doesn't look or sound like a joke. Apparently you haven't been on the internet long enough to realize there are real fanboys who say stuff like this and mean it.
Constantine is so powerful that the fourth wall matters not to him because John met his creator Alan Moore aside from this he met other creators in reality. One day, I was in Westminster in London-this was after we had introduced the character-and I was sitting in a sandwich bar. All of a sudden, up the stairs came John Constantine. He was wearing the trenchcoat, a short cut-he looked-no, he didn't even look exactly like Sting. He looked exactly like John Constantine. He looked at me, stared me straight in the eyes, smiled, nodded almost conspiratorially, and then just walked off around the corner to the other part of the snack bar. I sat there and thought, should I go around that corner and see if he is really there, or should I just eat my sandwich and leave? I opted for the latter; I thought it was the safest. I'm not making any claims to anything. I'm just saying that it happened. Strange little story. His second meeting with his creation was illustrated in 2001's Snakes and Ladders an adaptation by Eddie Campbell of one of Moore's performance art pieces: Years later, in another place, he steps out of the dark and speaks to me. He whispers: "I'll tell you the ultimate secret of magic. Any cunt could do it." They met a third time in fiction, when Moore was written into issue No. 120 of Hellblazer by then-author Paul Jenkins. Moore is seen sitting in silhouette at the back of a bar as John Constantine (who is on a pub crawl with the reader) raises a drink to him. Writers who had their run on the Hellblazer series have also admitted meeting the character in real life. Original Hellblazer writer Jamie Delano also claims to have encountered Constantine, during his run on the character, outside the British Museum.Peter Milligan saw Constantine at a party around 2009 and rushed after him, only to find he'd disappeared. Brian Azzarello once saw him in a Chicago bar but avoided him, saying that "the thing about John is, the last thing you'd want to be is his friend."
Well. Everyone of them will die and everyone of them will come back. Rick will be petty and build a second finite curve around his side of the multiverse. The doctor will shatter internally and morally and bring out the Valeyard which will harnest probably the regenerative energy of all his past and future selves which are probably infinite based on the Timeless child lore. Constantine will probably stole timelord- and Council of rick-tech for a future encounter. Then they all will have the luck to never meet again, but Rick and the doc will be more damaged as ever before, while constantine just see it as a regular Friday.
I still say it the wrong way even though I know how to pronounce it correctly. It just feels strange to change when you hear it being pronounced wrong almost everywhere and I like the wrong version better.
Constantine is the batman of magic, he has some trick and plan to get out of any and every situation. From making a deal with the devil to calling in a favor from god
i like constantine he's a really cool character but his stories get so absurd that I roll my eyes. I mean i know DC likes to overpower they're characters but damn.. lol
@@russell2890 it's the best version. That "fate synchronicity wave riding" bullshit just ruins the character. In the Vertigo stories John was just a regular guy expert in occultism, the kind of fraudulent magic used by conmen in real life, not the D&D fireball kind of magic. And it was entertaining because you saw this almost regular guy getting himself into absurd and dangerous situations and get out of them thanks to a stroke of genius, or sometimes by sacrificing his friends. One thing that bothers me though is his wardrobe choice, he wears a full suit with tie and trench coat, but he doesn't hang around bankers and lawyers, just working class people, punk rock bands and drug dealers, is it a matter of personal style? Being recognizable and fully exploit his own reputation?
I really liked the sympathetic magic in his coat. He loses it at one point and the coat keeps on trying to find its way back to him - all the while anyone who wears it basically gets some of his powers - but mostly gets screwed.
hes a good character but hes too much overpowered, there is no way a mortal can stand that much power... makes 0 sense a creature challenging the creator.
Constantine, Lucifer, and Dream are my fav charachters from dc, but by far my boy John gets the lest rep, even though he can tussle with them any fucking day, I mean the guy's main ability is luck, which is beyond the gods, he is op as fuck and he does not get enough love..
DC tends to overpower their characters, and I think that actually takes away from Constantine’s charm a bit. I fell in love with the character because he relied mainly on his wits, intelligence, and charms throughout the Vertigo runs, and his magic was quite subtle in nature. Either way, thanks for the video! It’s really well put together and a great reminder I definitely need to start reading Justice League Dark.
Liked, subbed, still picking my jaw off the floor. Think I cracked the concrete. Constinene is now and forever more my favorite DC Character. Great video, your voice is awesome. Nothing further. 💜
Ever since this came on my recommendations, I can't stop thinking about how John Constantine is so damn powerful, it's ridiculous. Why have I never got into the Hellblazer series?!?!
John Constantine is the only character Batman cannot defeat and will always call on when things are far beyond his detective mind and way of thinking!!
it always deppend on the writter and time they have to prepare, in some cases like the old constantine he would need a lot of time to do deals to take care of batman, but now as powerfull he is in a quick fight he could win, but if they both have time to prepare that could be something really interesting
This is a great video and Constantine is a great character. His knowledge and lack of morals/ethics make him dangerous. Manipulation, deceit, and trickery are how he wins most of his battles, not through sheer power, because in most cases he's the least powerful person in the room. However, my most favorite moment was when he encountered Circe in The Trinity. Constantine knew she was losing her immortality. He told her in an attempt to manipulate her, he knew how she could get it back. Circe, the powerful goddess she is, did not care about his information and had him stabbed. Constantine lying on the ground dying from a stab wound was saved by a mystically restrained Zatanna who cast a spell which had absolutely no words to it at all. While I love the character, sometimes he is too over the top and shouldn't be in the same league as the big boys. Constantine has become the Batman of magic and needs to be dropped down a few pegs.
Perfect explanation. The character should be that of a man who uses trickery to win instead of "Haux GOd killing" magic. So his blood is that of a demon but he can be The Spectre and bind God?
Actually the opposite in Hellblazer. He is an expertly skilled, and incredibly well researched Magician. But he wasn't born with the sort of raw power that Zatana or Dr.Fate have. He instead is basically the bastard that learned the frigging Cheat Codes to reality and can cut-off even gods off their power. He forces gods down to the level of mere men through their arrogance, but he never becomes a god himself.
Vertigo's Constantine was never over powered. His trick was making everyone believe he was. He only ripped Nergals spine out cause he knew his name (that has something to do with the demon lore in the book, which goes all the way back to the first time he summoned nergal and couldnt control him for that exact reason). He could always use magic but it was never opening pocket universes to dodge attacks. That was the problem a lot of the Hellblazer fans had with the new 52 version. They knew as soon as he went to DCs main imprint, he'd just become an asshole version of Doctor Strange.
"Go to Hell, John!" "Sorry. I can't go back there because of my trickery." "Wait. Whuuu.....?" "Besides, I don't really want to go back. Not my cup of tea." "But... wait... what?" "Bartender, cut this one off. To lit to even speak right."
Love this mate Although just a thing about the Golden Boy. Constantine never took away his powers, he simply cut his connection with him so Golden Boy couldnt affect Constantine’s life anymore
Vertigo John is my favorite. A video going over all the times John Constantine screwed up, gave up, did something selfish or straight up got someone killed, would probably be just as long. Or maybe longer.
I love a good OP character as much as the next guy, but I honestly hate hearing some feats that literally should be impossible. Like trapping nigh omnipotent beings in traps/seals that The Presence cant break?!?! I mean cmon, comics. Youre better than this
No they're not. This is comic books. What are you whining about? Anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, can and has happenned. That's what makes them awesome.
I think he means another god because the presence is #1, he’s the equivalent of “the one above all” for marvel and they are supposed to be like the top characters.
Are they? With people saying "Nonsense is perfect writing" I have no clue where you got the courage to write that comics are better than this. I like the wackiness, but cringe at the attempts to make things so powerful they're dumb. And then the same people who like this, turn around and criticise anime characters for the same thing, the irony.
Constantine is like Goku from DBZ with magical twist Base powers are decent All the Powerups are temporary Burn his soul or granted through artifacts and he needs to use them in order to take on more powerful foes. Has a time limit on them
I always find it funny how a guy who battles with the gods is unable to cure mere cancer from himself while able to continue on living as a soul outside his body
TheUndyingOne84 my theory is that the show didnt get enough views and to the general audience it was too similar to shows supernatural which had a similar concept and trench coat wearing protagonist so the execs figured it wouldnt be worth continueing.
@@TheLyingFigure I have been watching supernatural since it came out and I am a lore fan but Constantine has way more possibilities than supernatural could ever dream of . But you are right that why they pulled it because it couldn't rack up the views because of supernatural . It should be aired after alongside Lucifer or on it's own they should also promote it to the supernatural fandom.
I'm only six minutes in, and I didn't know Ol' John was capable of pulling off this many 'power stunts'; this is approaching the point of "Mary Sue-ness" (the same as I feel about Marvel's 'Blue Marvel', who they have shown beating TWO Hyperions [read Marvel's Superman.... well, one of them], AND a Hulk [Alternate Earth, but still]). All that being said, I love how he is depicted on Legends of Tomorrow. While he deserves a show as dark as Preacher or Walking Dead, 'Dark and Gritty' has been run into the ground lately (primarily due to TWD, in my opinion), so its nice to see this lighthearted version of him, that is still true to the core of his character, even if a bit underpowered compared to his comic version ^_^.
@@omnientertainment5852 Truth to tell, I haven't read comics in a long while, but I've seen others on UA-cam talk about how overpowerful Blue Marvel is (as I said, it seems like every other sentence he speaks is how he's beat down people tougher than his current opponent). Until this thing, though, I never knew how stupidly powerful Constantine was (even though he was one of my favorite characters during my 'goth' phase in the early 90s ^_^)

His second meeting with his creation was illustrated in 2001's Snakes and Ladders an adaptation by Eddie Campbell of one of Moore's performance art pieces:
Years later, in another place, he steps out of the dark and speaks to me. He whispers: "I'll tell you the ultimate secret of magic. Any cunt could do it."
They met a third time in fiction, when Moore was written into issue No.

Imagine if all that time Constantine was DC Lucifer just bored af so he nerfed himself to "play" with inferior beings as a way to entertain himself.
Exactly he is smart and dangerous but come on he is not that tough to survive against the big boys without some trick.
also he wins alot because beating him isnt worth the cost
And he's a novice Magician?
Imagine if he'd used half of his potential. Hed be God.

My Constantine knowledge: *boosted by 100*
Vertigo's Constantine was never over powered. They knew as soon as he went to DCs main imprint, he'd just become an asshole version of Doctor Strange.
aka Heckblazer
So, Constantine is borderline unstoppable...
Apart from lung cancer
"Go to Hell, John!"
"Sorry. I can't go back there because of my trickery."
