    I was excited to see the emergence of an 'Earth New Guardians' - a representative from earth for each of the lantern colours - in the Brightest Day New Guardians story but it sadly fizzled out - I'd like to see that done properly in a giant story that sees each lantern affect considerable changes around the globe.
    Though what i REALLY want to see is that happen IRL!

      @@MosaicComics Indeed - surely the potential perspective on say compassion is going to resonate much stronger for the reader if the character looks after children in a war zone than if they were an Egg-Matriarch of the Zoopflod, ever protectful against the coming of the Dark Flobulons or whatever.

    Too bad that the out of the main Green Lantern title, all the other series had those significant dropping sales, all those stories were fun and entertaining. Maybe it was because at one point, having so many aliens and adventures out of space made the series too distant to the readers. I've always assumed that's why they keep introducing new characters (increasingly faster and more often), because of the need to appeal to reader's new tastes, making them to be more more identifiable with audiences.

    • @MosaicComics

      I think it might've helped a lot if each book took place somewhere different, instead of all being space adventures. Lanterns can go anywhere, so the variety of locations should be as wide as the variety of characters.

      Something this video forgot to mention was that the Sinestro series at that time outlasted new guardians, red lanterns and even green lantern corps. I think there’s an audience for space adventures like that but there were too many titles and a lot of readers quit after Johns left. With the new lanterns, it just feels like new writers trying to make a quick buck with new IP because far sector was all in space. I agree with you but I do think it is wrong. If Johns proved anything. The main GLs can be great on their own.

    I think a big irl explanation is built into the concept of the Corps. In other DC "families," you can't just have someone pop up and claim the mantle. (even if they're sharing) In most cases, there's a loooong process of being a supporting character first before being able to convince readers they're worthy of taking the main stage. BUT, the GLC cuts out the middle-man because anyone selected is already deemed worthy. Once selected (and put through a really quick training period) they're essentially equal to any other member of the GLC. (in-universe)

    I honestly hate how in dc earth is the center of everything, and how humans is the most important people of all time. I think green lantern would really work better as its own thing instead of being a part of dc. I kind of just read green lantern comics from the silver age now because of that. I liked how back than earth was just really a drop of water in an endless universe and wasn't really all that special in the grand scheme of things. At least a lot less so than it is now. The finial straw for me that turned me off of modern green lantern was life beginning on earth making it the center of the universe when it was well established for like 50 years that life began with the guardians. also so many people have used power rings that they lost all their meaning and just anyone can use them. Also the guardians being evil half the time is something I don't care for either.

      Early in the Johns run, they showed alien GL's talk about Earth like a backwater, underdeveloped world. It was kinda refreshing to see Earth viewed that way by someone who doesn't live here...of course that was just introduced to completely reverse it later, but it's still nice to have.

What started with the death of Abin Sur to Hal becoming Parallax could be call the whole story of the in universe 15/17 years of Green lantern mythos.
      Kyle rayner is how the GLC died in the Universe, with one ring left he would have been the last knw Green lantern alive, after all this was the second time in 2 years that the GLC had been destroyed first by the death of Sinestro then by Hal so Kyle never really neede to be the most qualified just the last of the great Corps if comics had a conclusion end it would be that the Guardian don't exist in the future because of Hal & the GLC is but a relic of a long forgotten past, how they came to their end is all but lost in the 31st century with Kyle dying in some far off world in the greater universe or something

    Is there an in-universe reason why some Green lantern rings look different

    • @MosaicComics
      @MosaicComics  3 роки тому +6

      Kind of. I don't remember if it's ever been directly stated, but I've always understood it to be because of all the different aliens that make up the Corps. The rings have to fit so many different species that having one standardized design won't always work, plus the rings need to be able to change their size and shape to fit whoever they go to next...Kilowag's ring might go to someone the size of a Human, and it needs to be able to change or it won't be much use.
      Also, the Guardians are usually pretty lenient when it comes to having a standardized design...every member of the Corps is free to change their uniform however they want, since creativity helps them do the job better, and that most likely extends to the appearance of the rings too. As long as the symbol is visible, the Guardians are happy.

      That was my thinking too (read my comment if you haven’t yet, it’s a lot but covers the problems with this video pretty well, I think). Why define a character by 1 story and constantly replace them instead of developing them to be well-rounded characters by themselves? A great character like the GLs can stand on their own and work in a bunch of different stories but restraining them to 1 story or type of story is stupid. Kyle and Hal have had constant stories and popularity for decades because the writers developed and experimented with the characters instead of just leaving them as they were from the get-go and going for a new one.

      Too many Lanterns actually cheapens the title of Green Lantern since damn pretty much anyone can call himself one.
      They need to reduce human lanterns. I would go with hal, John, guy and Jessica.
      Only reason Kyle was introduced because Hal wasn't selling, they made Hal parallax and later introduced Kyle. He went on to become all powerful space Jesus character and now they don't know what to do with him. Reintroduced Hal so now Kyle just hangs around as a Lackey.
      Green lantern is such a mess. They need to go back to single protagonist driven stories, reduce human lanterns and explore Villains outside of the emotional spectrum.
      Everything going back to guardians or connected to spectrum is kinda predictable.

    1- Hal be the MAIN Lantern.
    2. Kyle a White Lantern.

  • @kenlsten4651
    @kenlsten4651 3 роки тому +5

    I like your video but most of your arguments after around 6:00 are extremely flawed. I'm sorry the rest of this comment can be crass but I fundamentally disagree with a lot of your points and feel these kinds of ideas are ruining modern GL.
    While I like Jo, you could have easily had John (who has similar experiences as a Black veteran), Simon (whose struggles as a Muslim American could've easily fit the story), and/or even Guy (whose history as a police officer and part of a police family could've been tackled and redefined) in the story instead which could've had just as powerful or been even more impactful of a story than we're getting. Jess and Kyle (both Hispanic/Latinx Americans) could've fit the role too like any other lantern who would struggle in this environment and learn from it. It's the same problem as your argument for Simon's extra powers: You don't really compare or take into account the struggles and histories of the other lanterns that easily parallel the new lanterns DC keeps lazily creating. If you wanted a new lantern to be unique, some options are not to have them be American or not have a military history again and again. Give them interests, behaviors, and perspectives that aren't just the same as the other lanterns. It's what I like (and was disappointed they didn't really explore yet) with Teen Lantern.
    At the same time, I'm sorry I have to be honest but the idea that developing lanterns limits their viability for new stories and experiments is complete crap. Instead of constantly creating new lanterns, keep developing the ones they have so each of them can stand toe to toe with Batman and Superman. Kyle was the newest lantern for almost 2 decades (if you don't count jade's short stint) before Simon was created. It allowed Kyle to become a strong, well-rounded character with great relationships and histories with other lanterns and heroes and even a rogue's gallery on par with Hal Jordan. Hal, John, Guy, and Kyle became beloved, great characters through decades of experimentation and development that should never, ever end. People still want more exploration for John. It's what made things like Mosaic, Omega Men, and Guy's Red lanterns so essential and memorable to the history of the franchise. Immediately after Simon was created and JLA was canceled, he was pushed into cameo appearances and replaced by Jessica. 2 years after GLs ended, Simon went back into obscurity and has mostly been forgotten. Even Jess is barely in comics anymore. Why should we care about Jo when they're gonna replace her with Tai, Keli, or another random new lantern someday? Green Lantern already represents so many different perspectives, cultures, and experiences and it's an insult to push them aside and ignore them. Constantly making new lanterns diminishes and disrespects the franchise's history and confuses new and old readers alike. It's the same problem with Flash where they keep adding characters like the Future state Flash instead of developing the diverse flash characters they already have (and could be members of the LGBT+ community too) like Wallace, Avery, and Wally's kids.
    Also, it's hard to take your statics (after Johns' left) seriously when you don't compare them to all the other GL books of that time, specifically Sinestro's series which outlasted not only new guardians and red lanterns but also GLC, Lost Army, and almost Omega Men (which was almost canceled at #7). Also, you have to remember those statistics were during a time when a lot of fans dropped off of GL after Johns left. I still remember everybody calling GL #20 the perfect drop-off point for readers so who knows if GL, GLC, and Sinestro were outselling or selling less than New Guardians and RL because you don't show it. While I really appreciate you using these statistics, don't forget important facts like these that fundamentally redefine and change the legitimacy of your argument. Take some inspiration from "Comics, by Perch" which has made multiple statistic videos like this.

    Seems like the folks who love these nongreens and nonhumans are a vocal minority in sales data...

    3600 lanterns and no one has the talent to write for any of the alien ones. i mean Hal is the greatest, but that is why there are so many earth bound losers.
    earth needs 2. Alan (non-homo) and HJ

    I completly disagree with your points here. The life thing being on earth makes good for a plot point as to why there are so many earth lanterns. But why are they all from USA and not from the Amazon or Atlantis? also the excuse of we need to make new green lanterns is a poor excuse just have one GL you already have go through a character arc.........😑. Like you know why they making these lanterns is cuz of bad writing and to fill a DEI demographic

    The numerous Reboots and Retcons are telling me that Superhero Comics have Jumped The Shark.

    There are more green lanterns because of the woke push. Hence why the latest lanterns have all been brown skinned. This includes the gold lantern from the Legion. The last 5-6 lanterns have all been diverse characters. I wish I were wrong, but I'm not. The sorrow Lantern can be a white guy, though, because he's sad and pathetic. That's acceptable for white folk, or at least that's how they portray their thinking.

      There's actually been a lot of white people with Lantern rings getting the spotlight lately. Hal and Carol have been at the center of the GL ongoing series for the last two years, with Carol just recently joining the Justice League. Guy has been appearing pretty regularly in the main story and backups, and will be featured in a new GLC ongoing starting in February. Justice Society of America just ended, replaced by a new book titled JSA, and Alan's in both. In addition to that, Alan had his own miniseries, that also introduced the Golden Age Red Lantern. Caolan Shepherd has been around since the beginning of GL War Journal. And as you pointed out, Nathan is the Sorrow Lantern, and will be central to the next big GL storyline. So there you go, DC has actually been giving a lot of attention to seven white people with Lantern rings. Hope that helps put your mind at ease.

    I always hated the idea having 4 and now 7? earth lanterns, mainly because I like alien characters like Kilowog more than most of the earth lanterns. With 7 earth lanterns, everyone has to be something important. So at the start of rebirth, John Stewart has to be the leader of the GL corps, not someone like Kilowog , Salakk or even Mogo, who's probably way more qualified. And during big events, every earth lanterns have to be amazing and decimate everything they face. This just leaves most alien lanterns as death fodder or being incompetent.
