Guy Gardner has always been angry, but what happens when he finally reaches a breaking point? What does it actually mean to become a Red Lantern and be powered by rage? Are the other Red Lanterns really the dangerous monsters that everyone believes them to be? And after a lifetime of rejection, has Guy finally found the place he belongs?

Red Lanterns and Guy are VERY underrated characters. My favorite group of anti-heroes in DC comics. Thank you for covering this for people who have NO idea about this side of the Reds.
I like Guy's Reds.
Atrositus turns you into your rage, taking away anything you could have ever been apart from it, Guy arms you with your rage so that you can use it how you want, he leaves you with everything you had and the potential to be something greater.
I’d pay for a Animated series adapting this version of the red lanterns overcoming there hate under guy to help people
Imagine if Atrocitus played video games. His Rage levels would go off the rails. He wouldn’t rage quit, just be even angrier.
It’s a shame this run got cancelled because this red lantern run was super underrated.
Sadly dc needed to make room for more bloody bat books
Guy needs to be a dual lantern. Kyle wore all the rings, razer was wielding red and blue in an animated show, so it’s only logical that guy, who’s proven he’s capable of wielding red and green, separately and together, it only makes sense he just wield them both at this point. When he wore them both during darkest night, he was shredding black lanterns to pieces. I swear if he got more time to comprehend his dual emotions for both rings, he’d have the most dangerous constructs, green creating the shape, and red dong the damage, which basically mean he’d bypass the green lantern no kill rule because of rage fueled willpower.
He's been one a few times
I wished Guy stayed as a red lantern
"Anger is not a weapon it is a motivation" Me who uses it as both:MMMMMMMM
Very well said all around. I remember one of my favorite character moments in this series was with Dex-Starr and Atrocitus. Atrocitus was almost willing to take Dex's ring to sustain himself but refused to do so.
Because he was the last one loyal to Atrocitus and say this next part with me: "He is good kitty"
Yeah, the handling of Atrocitus has been pretty amazing overall, but especially in this run. He chose to show kindness to Dex-Starr, even though there was a large benefit to betraying him in that moment. He tore down the honorary statues of Guy's team, but left Rachet's standing, because he deserved to be remembered. He even got vengeance against the guy who scarred Skallox. And it would be incredibly easy to write Atrocitus as nothing but an unhinged fanatic (which he absolutely is), but instead they lean into him having layers, and I love it.
Do you have the source for your PFP?
Guy gardner in my opinion needs more love in the comics because the time he spent as a red lantern he did great
Guy Gardner can be a cocky, arrogant bastard. He can also be a sensitive, upstanding soul, too.
I was first introduced to the character in the late 80s, in Justice League. I must say, at first, I hated him. But over time, as his character was broadened and they gave him more depth, I began to like him a lot. He's one of my favorite Green lanterns.
I think a lot of us had that same experience. I didn't like him at first either, and now I can't imagine Green Lantern without him.
Very good character work on Guy, he’s always been an underrated character in DC.
He became a pretty cool dude as a red lantern
@@jacobweatherford4696 He’s been cooler before that from the 1999 to the present
Guy Gardener hasn’t had a lot to do I’d like to see a story that focuses on Guy that continues his rivalry with Atrocitus. Maybe have Guy forge his own red ring that doesn’t have any of the red lantern down sides.
I support this. Hal and Sinestro can have each other. Guy vs Atrocitus as eternal rivals would be dope. Maybe even forcing Atrocitus to realize he's living for something besides rage. He can never forgive the human that wounded his pride.
@@TheGreatDevlin Hall and Sinestro’s relationship was exactly what I was thinking of they hate each other but they also respect each other.
@@zyairrbissoon Anything that moves the GL franchise away from revolving around only Hal as the beacon of storytelling is a win. And really, every hero deserves a direct rival/villain.
I not only support him making a red lantern ring that’s an improvement of the power of rage, I also want him to wield both red and green as the ultimate avatar of the phrase: the will to destroy.
Agree, except with the "forging his own double ring thing".
It simplify the people wearing the ring to just being capable of one emotion, if you need more than one. The rings choose you in what you excel at, not what completely encompasses you.
Also, having 2 rings of different colors doesn't yield any advantages.
This run was so good. They had a very real chance of becoming edgy for edges sake, but somehow managed to make an excellent series.
And I've always said there's a difference between rage and righteous fury.
Unpopular opinion, I’ve always liked Guy Gardner. He’s the only one who punched Batman hard, when Batman really deserved it.
Guy is great. More people need to read runs like this one.
love the idea of the rings being neutral. I am a proffessionally spooky person each autumn and would love to see a benevolent/neutral yellow lantern that just does horror or the like.
A Yellow Lantern that walks the Earth on Halloween night, just to see what happens...I'd love it.
Dude this run was so good, was so annoyed when Guy went back to being a Green. This gave him some much needed spotlight, plus with Kyle as the White lantern and simon on earth, they were allowed to be creative
i really hope that one day they will make a miniseries or a solo series in general for the blue lanterns, the star sapphires and the indigo tribe
maybe they could use some of Johns' forgotten plots? like the rivalry of the blues with Evelstar, the unknown sapphire or that the indigos do not have willing members or that represent their emotion.
This
This story arc meant a lot personally because at one point in time I was struggling with anger issues along with frustrations of life. I saw some of myself with Guy and some of the characters. I can appreciate that he helped them by giving them respect and an outlet for them to help deal with and overcome their anger problems. This made them more than just angry beasts, along with showing the difference between healthy and unhealthy anger. I feel like the videos you do, along with talking about the Emotional Spectrum is a form of therapy. Especially now since I'm planning to see a therapist soon.
Dan, you have my utmost thanks and appreciation for doing this video. It means a lot as I use this story as a reminder of how much this changed me. And I'm sure it has changed others too.
That's really great to hear, and I'm glad you're getting the help you need. Stories are powerful things, and having that kind of impact on even one person makes the whole thing worth it.
this is why i love the concept of the corps and lanterns
Wow.... Other than Injustice Guy in the comics, I've never seen him in such awesome glory! I'm gonna read this!!!!
I really enjoyed this catch up. Guy Guardner has always been an underused character and this really fits his bill.
20:47
I saw a great interpretation that green is the most important lantern because it acts as a neutral/balancer for the emotional spectrum. Because it’s willpower and without will/resolve the emotion can overpower you:
- Blue is hope but they have a tendency to become passive/unwilling to act. Will helps them move from simply hoping for change but perusing change
- violet is love but they can become obsessed in their love/passion. Willpower stops them from going to far
- indigo is compassion but too much compassion makes you give up yourself/give to much away. So it needs restraint to know when to be selfish
-orange is greed and acts the reverse (to much free you end up like larflees, so will limits that to know when to give versus take)
- and like you pointed with red/rage you could become a mindless savage blinded by it but also have anger towards injustice or for someone else (or will keeping you from going too far and losing yourself)
It also adds depth to why yellow/fear is its counter and why sinestro core looks for people who can instill fear rather than having tones of fears. Because “fear of becoming ___” can also deter you going too far with any one emotion (which is in line with some sinestro interpretations) but at the same time it’s flawed because fear and panic can also worsen these emotions and make you start acting like that
This story was ASTONISHING. Thank you so much for telling it to me!
Great vid, this run needs more eyes on it.
This was easily the best of the GL books at the time (5 books in 1 month? Sounds impossible today). Personally, this was your best video and I’m excited to see your summary of the supergirl series!
Dexstar is so cute ☺️
even if it burns my face i have to admit that it is quite cute
he is my favorite completely animal lantern :)
@@juanbisonosuero3650 lol 😂 indeed
I loved this video! I'm really looking forward to the Supergirl one in the coming weeks.
Great summary! I really love this title. Sadly, a lot of people dismissed these titles only because it has New52 on it.
Great job, Dan! Really enjoyed this video. Always liked the Red Lanterns, but walked away from the book before this run. Will need to pick it up, might help me change the way I deal with rage! Rwahahahaaa!
Great video man!!!
Thanks!
Dan, I'm going to need you to stop giving me stories to revisit before I finish the ones I'm on! 😂 Seriously though, I remember feeling relieved at the change of direction that Soule brought to the Red Lanterns book. I haven't read it since it came out so I'm excited to meet these characters as if it's for the first time, especially Skallox!
Seeing how much work you put into these videos also makes a strong case for your eventual coverage of the Mosaic story line. It's like you take the time to sift through the minutia of a story and bring enough of the best points to your audience while leaving enough unsaid that we can enjoy it for ourselves. It's a fantastic experience!
Narrator sounds good, well spoken and enunciated video. Interesting content. Thank you for the upload, sir.
You're welcome, and thank you for the kind words.
Dude, just, thanks so much for making these videos. I look forward to each and every one. It’s exactly what I need on a repetitive work day. So, thank you.
You're very welcome.
Guy with long hair and beard looks awesome.
Another fantastic video that makes me want to read a whole comic book run! Haha
This was def one of my fav lantern stories
It’s kinda a shame you can’t do a comic like this dissecting the idea of the orange corps due to the fact there always will be only one. Could be neat to see an evil take on a blue lantern though, giving people false hope could definitely have some evil notations
Every single time someone asks my favorite GL, I say Guy and get the most hate for it. But when I point out this run, the GLC New 52 stuff, and Injustice Year 2, I usually win them over. And that's not even mentioning JLI.
Man I love this video, it works better to make us relate with guy and understand hsi sadness and anger, especially the background music, this second time I'm watching this.
While abrasive and sometimes the fool of stories, Guy has always been a total badass and one of my favorite characters
Amazing video love Green Lanterns
I wish they used guy’s blackest night costume for this run
Please do an in-depth video on all of Guy and Ice's relationship
Red lantern aren't just angry, they are in rage, an all consuming rage. they are only a few who can remane sane under the control of a red ring .
I think DC should make Guy a permanent Red Lantern, or given recent events in the Green Lantern comics foreshadowing big changes coming up, maybe they could have his Green Lantern ring fuse with a Red ring, resulting in him being a new kind of lantern and maybe emotion in the emotional spectrum.
You know I always wondered why Blue empowers Green and debuffs Red and it’s the only emotional spectrum to have interactions, at least in the TV show on CN.
I’d imagine Green, Yellow, and even Star Sapphires would interact with Red in a positive way.
Will, Fear, and Love in their own way would empower Rage.
See I think the colored lantern corps enhanced the mythos and lore of the GL franchise as a whole. I loved the Red Lantern run and I wish it would’ve continued. Same goes for the Sinestro books and the Larfleeze solo books. I believe the Blue, Indigo and Star Sapphire’s could also use solo books to further flesh out the corps with engaging stories. The GL franchise as a whole is sad today to me in the amount of titles we get from DC. I hope in the future DC brings them back in a good way with engaging stories. I also think that yes rage and fear can have “positive” traits if handled correctly but most people I feel don’t have the control to handle rage and can let fear get the better of them too. I don’t really see a positive argument for “Greed” though. Yes, Larfleeze worked with the other lantern corps for what Blackest Night? But very loosely at that. Greed I don’t really see having any positive attributes to turn into that even if the corps was ran by someone other than Larfleeze, which I know Hal was an orange lantern for a short time but still. I’d like to see a video on your thoughts of the Orange Lantern (Corps.)
When you really get down to it, Greed is just wanting things, and a desire to possess something can bring joy, or even be important to your survival depending on the circumstances. The real problem (with ALL emotions) is that too much of any one is a bad thing...being kinda selfish sometimes isn't the end of the world, but always fixating on getting what you want at all costs can start to ruin things. Even something like Hope isn't immune to this...Hope is the belief that everything will work out for the best, but if you have too much Hope, you may be willing to remain a passive observer waiting for the situation to resolve itself, instead of taking action to achieve the desired outcome.
Amygdala/ Aaron Helzinger would been a notable Red Lantern for his temperamental irregularities and diminished intellect.
Red Lantern Guy was one of my favorite Green Lantern stories, really wished that stayed his status quo, turning the Reds from the Green Lantern's greatest enemy to their greatest ally. But nope, God forbid you change the status quo..
I read the Red Lanterns book before the Guy Gardner run. It was insufferable to read, a Shakespearean whine-fest. This period was such an invigorating time for all of Green Lantern, just overshadowed by coming after the Geoff Johns era.
It's kind of amazing that Red Lanterns is basically split into two runs, and one of them is an all-time great while the other is one of the very worst.
@@MosaicComics Red Lanterns during the Guy period even made Futures End seem interesting with their Tie-in. That's an accomplishment.
I would have enjoyed the presentation of the late Guy Gardner Warrior villain slain in the 1990s to get revived as a Black Lantern: Dementor. Dementor would been a cold, deformed, disfigured magician who could easily been a stronger threat as a dead person able to warp reality and souls as he saw fit.
Now I want to see a similar storyline for the yellow lanterns and the Orange lanterns. Heck even the Black lanterns if it's possible.
Read the Sinestro series if you want to see a really good story about the different motivations of the members of the Sinestro Corps. That group runs the full range from freaky monster villains to inspirational, hopeful heroes.
@@MosaicComics thanks I'll look into it, also who is the author was it Geoff Johns or someone else.
@@redsteel1151 The whole thing was written by Cullen Bunn.
I wont spoil it here - shows 3 corpses 😂
As The Grand Priest of The Temple of the Algorithm, I bless this video with a comment.
Woooo
Anger is a gift
2:35 when did Dex Star loose himself to his rage ?, i thought like Atrocitus his rage was also focused on vengance on those who hurt/ killed his family.
I like to think Steven from Steven universe got this talk from his therapist.
Still thinking about that show.
@16:32 the power of a cat, dex 4ever
looking at everything; this comic’s prolly the reason the red lanterns are less brainwashed in the GL animated series
(after all what’s the point of fighting red lanterns if they’re all one-note zombies)
Hey are you going to review the green lantern civil corps special or just wait until the whole arc is finished before reviewing it probably the later
Guy is easily my favorite Green Lantern. I hate that most people only know him for the stupid "just one punch" gag. He's a legit badass and someone who looks out for his friends no matter the cost to himself.
When I think of Green Lanterns who've had substantial development and meaningful character growth, I always think of Guy Gardner first.
Rage, Anger, and Greed are only negative as our societal norms and standards have labelled them as such. As SyFy shows us these can be considered positive even preferred emotions such as Greed (Ferengi), Anger and Rage used in Berserker Fashion (heroic aspects of the Kzin) and others as well. So are any emotions really negative? Not really. it all depends on the perspective and how they are used.
My favourite lantern corps is the orange and red lanterns
No, Guy killed Major Force in his right mind as Warrior.
Thar drink guy made is called a michelada
Red Lanterns are dope. Just not a fan of losing my heart...I like my heart.
Ik im in the minority but i liked the first half of the RL more than the soule run. That run was the first lantern things i ever read. I thought the backstabbing, blood magic, and Atrocious almost learning his lesson was interesting. Ik there were problems in that run but found that more interesting than the kind of bland meditation on rage and abuse with guy.
i like the bones of the soules run but i never felt the impact others did. RL themselves felt like Guy lackies by the end with flatten personalities and their edges shaved off, going along with anything guy said bc he made their lives better. I could've been on board with a portagonist shift if the reds felt like they had more agency in making these life changes & still showed the nastier side of their personalities. I think that makes or breaks an abuse narrative for me is 'do they have agency and did you feel the need to make them more sympathetic by making them more palatable?' if the answers no & yes im probably not going to like your story.
Sorry for the long ramble, your vids are always thoughtful. I love the new ones with the branching topics its like a surprise even time u put one out.
Thank you. I wasn't able to appreciate the Peter Milligan run of Red Lanterns, but I'm glad you could, especially if it was your gateway into reading more Lantern stuff. When there's so much to pick from, it's cool that everybody can find something that appeals to them.
I need to see Jason Todd become a Red Lantern
Envy Corps
Sorrow Corps
Egoistic Corps
DC, i know that you want to make them, go for it
DC recently introduced what people are calling a "Sorrow Lantern" (or Grey Lantern as I call him) a while ago. Not much is know about his powers yet, but it is exciting seeing a new lantern and the possibility of more to come.
Bleez backstory was sad
Rachet death was sad
Red lantern ring would be op on hulk
i dont care man, Guy Garner's red Lantern suit looks totally bad ass and he's a great fit as a red lantern then a green, green ta me didnt always fits him, makes him look like a clown and more weak, sorry for put alot of thinking energy into on him as a green L but im just saying, he's better off Red not Green
=-D
I hate this comic so much I just ahhhhh I dislike how they did my boy atrocitus
