@@gamer966 SMB1 end levels based off of a system called frame rules. Basically the game only checks to see if you’ve completed the level every X amount of frames (I think it’s every 24 frames but I don’t exactly remember). Former world record holder Darbian has a good analogy of catching a bus. The bus arrives to take Mario to the next level every X amount of frames. Mario can make it to the bus stop at any point but he can only catch the bus every X frames. The frame rule difference is apparent around 2:23.
The sheer amount of information you kept track of and showed at the end is amazing. I've never seen someone keep track of literally EVERY single thing that happened. That is insane! I was blown away by the editing and time it took, but that floored me at the end. That was well worth watching all the way to the very end. Simply amazing speedrun and video. ❤
This is really mesmerizing to watch for some reason. Just watching the results of over 5,000 speedruns of Super Mario Bros. playing out in front of me all at once is SO cool. I can’t even imagine the amount of effort you put in to make this. Congratulations, you just earned yourself a sub.
Visually seeing the framerule differences between attempts is neat. Also holy crap my brain hurts thinking about the amount of effort this took. Very cool stuff.

Woooooow! If there is one video in all of UA-cam that deserves a like, it is this one. Not only because of the many hours of gameplay, but for the incredible editing and sincronizaron of all those thousands of videos and sound tracks. This is just insane! This is a masterpiece!
This is...honestly amazing. Not just your attempts or the way you combined all the clips. This is incredibly interesting to see where the majority of runs end and how hard speedrunning really is. This is what I would show to someone who doesn't think speed running is all that hard. This is freaking art man.
@@kelvinnkat well since speedrunners inputs are tracked, they can all be put into one hacked client of the game and run collectively. Atleast that’s how I assume he did it.
@@kelvinnkat Yeah. To prevent cheating, speedrunners (of pretty much any highly competitive game) have to show their button presses and record inputs on external hardware.
When I said "That is a lot of Marios" in a previous video, I'm guessing that's an understatment now. THIS, is a lot of Marios. Amazing video. Loved it.
Probably my favorite part of this video is how well it shows the framerule system in action, the fact that no matter how far behind or ahead some of the Marios are, at the start of a level they leave in small groups, and depending on how consistent you are, those groups stay clustered together. It's super neat, great job!
"We started with an army. There were thousands of us. By the time we even reached the enemy stronghold, our numbers had been reduced to a mere handful of veteran Marios. All I could hear were their screams as we madly dashed to save the princess. I couldn't even look back to see their final moments. When we finally found Princess Peach, there were only twelve of us. We have saved our Princess, but at what cost?"
Yeah, didn't notice it at first but you are right. Great visualization . Should send this to Bismuth or Summoning Salt, but I also like that the bus-analogy already is kind of a running joke.
@@JustsomeSteve supposedly the framerules have something to do with when you press start on the start screen which could determine where enemies appear in a frame because enemies are on a timer that restarts every frame cycle. I.E. if you press start at the beginning of a frame cycle, then enemies will probably appear slightly sooner when you enter a frame than they would if you press start a or near the end of a frame cycle. I assume you think that is happening here because enemies are showing at different points on the screen, but that is probably just because the Marios themselves are at different points on the screen, so the enemies are not showing until whenever the Marios show.
@@wrestlerx8494 The "Framerule is just, that the game refreshes every 21 frames; that window is considered a frame rule. This means that when Mario reaches the end of a level, how quickly the next level loads will depend on where he is in the frame rule; a player who reaches the end on frame 3 and a player who reaches the end on frame 19 will both be on the same frame rule. Thus Mario's will walk together, at the end of the level, on every Framerule (every 21 frames) into the next level. I just think it's a great visualization of that Framerule. :)
@@JustsomeSteve ok. Because there is a glitch in this game with a Bullet Bill that I think appears in level 8-2 and for that players supposedly wait on the start screen at the beginning of the game until a certain point to press start which is apparently needed to set up that glitch later in the game. My guess was due to the enemies being on a timer based on the frame it's on when you press start, you have to press start on a certain frame to allow the Bullet Bill to appear underneath Mario at exactly the right time to do the glitch AND do it in the least amount of time.
Number of Mario’s left after each level (give or take) Start: 5162 1-1: 3308 64% 1-2: 929 28% 4-1: 835 88% 4-2: 414 49% 8-1: 138 33% 8-2: 55 39% 8-3: 32 58% 8-4: 12 37% So the levels from easiest to hardest, in terms of deaths/resets, are 4-1, 1-1, 8-3, 4-2, 8-2, 8-4, 8-1,1-2
This is a really neat way to put show just how difficult speedrunning is, all the deaths and fails, and how big of an achievement it is for the runner when a run is completed, It also is really amazing being able to see the framerules with each group of Marios at the beginning of each level. Great video!
@@GreenScreenBoi True that. A much better way to pass the time is to dunk on people who shamelessly share their interests and hobbies on social media. Makes me feel so much better about my loser life. Besides, how else would I tell others I have no life without telling them I have no life?
I'm just saying this to prove a point. People like this contribute nothing to society, and waste there time to get a pointless world record just so they can say they did it, but really, no one cares
idea: if you are able to pinpoint on each level map the point where a run dies you could create a quantitative heatmap of the most difficult points in the game. In other words, we could go from saying "1-1 is so difficult to do fast enough that only X% of runs go through" to be able to say that for specific points in the game. See the infamous Koopa jump in 1-2. That was a slaughter!
I totally get your point but I don't think a speed run would be a good indicator of how hard the game is. Because he's sacrificing basically all strategy to win in exchange for speed. Like skipping all power ups and attempting jumps with a very low chance of success because in speed runs that's what you have to do.
@@The_Bad_Guy. The point is to find the difficult points in a speedrun, not for other types of gameplay. Of course, if you are playing with a different objective you would obtain different results.
@@CristianConsonni that's works in the case of nobody reset. But most of speedrunner reset if the very beggining dont be good, instead of the end or middle of the speedrun.
@Adnan Yusuf a “spliced” run just means that there are segments from multiple runs combined into one video and passed off as being continues. For example, a spliced Mario fun might have a perfect first 2 stages but then mess up, it could then be spliced with a perfect next stage and so on giving the appearance of a perfect run
It's great to see the discrete clusters of Marios at the start of each level, each separated by framerule; it's a great visual representation of how the game works.
I actually really enjoy how this truly visualizes the frame rule aspect of the game. It's a massless blob of marios at the end of the level and then you can see clear separate clumps after teh frame rule has taken effect.
Really informative way to visualize it. When the marios are evenly spaced by the frame rule, those are easy parts of the run. When the marios explode and spread out across the whole floor, those are the parts of the game that are most difficult to keep consistent
You can really see how easy 4-1 is in this video. Anybody with a copy of the game and something to play it on can easily complete 4-1 just as fast as in the video.
True I didn't think of that, but since I played mario bros when it came out it's already burned in my brain. I wish more games were as simple yet good as mario bros.
Haha this is incredible, never seen anything quite like it before Edit: shoutout to the walljump run at 1:19 LOL Edit 2: love the framerule gaps that appear starting in 8-1
Frankly, I'm impressed at the editing skills required to make something like this. Also pretty cool to see the effect of frame rules visualized like this.
Looks like he lost 1000x by missing the pipe on 1-1 and resetting, then gave up another 700 times before the flag (-1800). But going from 3300 lives to under 1000 (-2300) on 1-2 shows how dangerous that level is for a speed run! Next level brought him down to 137 survivors (-800). So after that 55 lives (-82) doesn't seem so bad. Finally we got 32 (-50) going into Bowser's Castle for a finale of 12 (-20). Naturally, he might have practiced these later levels so he'd be more successful when doing a speed run from the beginning.

I like how as you progress through levels you can actually visually see the 12 frame rule in effect as regardless of place when a new level is started you can see the mario's exit in groups
I like how in the start of each level you can see the mario's group up by frame rule, what an excellent visual representation of buses arriving at different scheduled times
i absolutely LOVE that you can see how the frame rules divide runs into discrete intervals. like in most games you'd expect a fairly constant distribution of the player's position between the slowest run and the fastest, but here they're split into clusters because of the way frame rules work
@ Basically, the level can only end during certain times, so if you get there early you have to wait. The gap is tiny, but you can see when a new level starts how they all got bunched into groups after having been like a stream before. Imagine a race but you have to take the bus. It doesn't matter if you get to the bus stop before the other guy if you have to take the same bus.

Basically the game only checks to see if you’ve completed the level every X amount of frames (I think it’s every 24 frames but I don’t exactly remember).

See the infamous Koopa jump in 1-2. That was a slaughter!
I totally get your point but I don't think a speed run would be a good indicator of how hard the game is. Because he's sacrificing basically all strategy to win in exchange for speed. This was awesome, thanks for putting it together. The battle of 1-2 is a blood bath. Lost so many good Mario's out there.

21 frames I think
21 frames
I like how in the start of each level you can see the mario's group up by frame rule, what an excellent visual representation of buses arriving at different scheduled times
Agreed. Very cool to see how far a framerule actually sets you back.
Its so interesting to see how they are grouped based on framerules. Each group of marios are perfectly spaced from one another
i absolutely LOVE that you can see how the frame rules divide runs into discrete intervals. like in most games you'd expect a fairly constant distribution of the player's position between the slowest run and the fastest, but here they're split into clusters because of the way frame rules work
What are frame rules?
@ Basically, the level can only end during certain times, so if you get there early you have to wait.
The gap is tiny, but you can see when a new level starts how they all got bunched into groups after having been like a stream before.
Imagine a race but you have to take the bus. It doesn't matter if you get to the bus stop before the other guy if you have to take the same bus.
@ you can only gain or lose time in increments of 21 frames. i have no idea why that is exactly, but it results in this cool effect we see here
@ is difficult to see at the begging but in the last couple stages you can see the Marios start in small groups.
This is wild! I can tell this took ages to compile, and it's gotta be the most unique speedrun video I've ever seen. Plus it was cool to watch the attempts all at once, seeing some fall behind or out, or how many were close to the pace of your 4.58. It really puts the grind of a speedrun into perspective.
