  • The original version of this song was great and had a lot of meaning to it. For some reason may it be his voice the power behind it or the emotion he presented brought out the emotions in me. I was truly speechless and had to cut the camera.

Interestingly enough, this song covered by Disturbed touches young people in a profound way. They don’t know Simon and Garfunkel, but they totally get the lyrics of this song, probably because Draiman stabs your soul and totally inhabits the meaning. They cry the first time they hear it and become obsessed with it. Disturbed’s fans get to know S&G and folks who would never listen to metal get to hear and understand what really is behind Disturbed’s message over the years, (although they seem to have a bit more of a hopeful message any more). They don’t lose their edge, but this song takes on a totally different message when someone like Draiman, a very well educated guy in his mid 40’s with a family sings it. People who knew the S&G original finally hear the lyrics from a soul level instead of a sad level, you know? I’m glad you get it.

Simon and Garfunkle's was light and poetic, fretting of a growing distance between. It was different times. For these days, Draiman delivers the Final Warning. Iron fist in a very refined and meticulous velvet glove. A rounded softhanded beauty luring you into the song, and then he confronts you with stunning and searing power. Time is just about up folks. David Draiman was born in Brooklyn to an orthodox Jewish family. He hails from a long line of noted temple cantors. He attended Yeshiva and was expected to sing in temple too. Well... he went in a different direction and much of his family disowned him. His later songs are so powerful.... Hold on to Memories; Inside the Fire; The Light... Incredibly inspirational. Give them another try... you might be pleasantly surprise. His vocal training was primarily to prepare him to cantor.

  • @stmichelob
    @stmichelob 3 роки тому +3

Back around 1963, Paul Simon had a dream, and when he awoke, had to write a song based on what he saw. The song turned into "The Sound of Silence", and is maybe one of the most recognizable and known folk songs ever made. But it was a folk song, and the emotion of HOW it was sung did not correctly convey the dire warning of the dream he had, I believed, received from God. So the song was made, and remained as it was, until the band Disturbed decided to cover it in their own way. For those who do not know who Disturbed is, they formed in the 90's and are known as a "growly, metal" band. But then they covered "The Sound of Silence", and blew everyone's mind with the singer's vocal range and depth of emotion. In short, they did the song the way, I believe, God wanted it done. This is my comment on the song on various youtube videos concerning vocal coach and others' reactions:
"Disturbed's version of this song is so strong... so imminent and fraught with warning... so dire for action and yet so sad and what could be with failure to heed the warnings... S&G's original was almost like "reading" a history book and the emotion conveyed was "Oh well...". Yes. As a gen X guy, and a Marine of the 90's, THIS is the version I feel in my soul. THIS is the version it always should have been."
I feel that the warning given to Paul Simon 60 years ago was meant to be heard now, at this time, and I felt this VERY personally when I first heard it. The lyrics were "from me". The lyrics were EXACTLY what I was going through, and have been going through, ever since.
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
(I've always felt alone, in darkness, being shunned and scorned by those I tell of things to come)
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
(I have been called a prophet or possible prophet for the last year now, and I've summarily rejected this. I don't know what a "prophet" is as it pertains to me, but I do know that I have discernment. I can see what is in front of me. And I reckon I've been called to tell others of what I see. I don't know...)
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
(I have seen what is coming; HAS been coming for 14 years. But again, I walked alone. I saw alone, at least concerning those I knew. That "neon light that stabbed my eyes"... it "touched the sound of silence" of those around me who were willingly blind and deaf to what I saw)
And in the naked light, I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
("People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening"... Those who chose to be absorbed in their phones, their social media, their own comfortable thoughts that everything was good and would be forever... So sadly wrong...)
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
(No one dared disturb the sound of mass capitulation and compliance, that the "group think" that had been forced upon them, that they had learned was the only way to exist, was correct, and the penalty for disturbing that sound of sheepdom was to be eaten by the wolves... which was a lie. An opposite. The wolves were, in fact, herding the sheep for an easier slaughter.)
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
(Me screaming at the blank faces of those I had sworn a Sacred Oath to protect, to wake them from this perilous dream they had self-induced, to WAKE THEM UP and make them see. And they chose their comfortable cognitive dissonance over life-saving truth)
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
("Take my arms that I might reach you" hits me so hard... I come with love and knowledge... just take my "arms" and allow me to help...)
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed
    In the wells of silence
(And they just vaguely smile, or comfortably smirk, and turn away... back to the comfort of silence...)
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence
(And then, after all the ignored warnings, they turned to the gods of culture, who seduced them with self love; with self-absorption; with love of the worldly. Even after the prophets of their world SCREAM for them to hear... they are just unheard words in their world of silence...)

This song is AMAZING... probably the most popular reaction song E V E R !! The crazy part is this is so far from what it is that Disturbed does musically that people of any music genre were/seemed (bewildered?)! 100% of all the people that watch this video thought to themself, "What the heck am I experiencing here?" "Who is this Man?" "Where have I heard this before?" "Is this religious/spiritual in its nature?" (lol) and then once the song is over? (speaking of the sound of silence) almost all had to gather their thoughts and ponder many mixed emotions! Was this for real? How Davids phenomenal vocals were either never known to them or if known to them... What the hell this was? The sad thing was when watching the official video... many (did I say, "Many?") focused on his facial expressions and piercings; the dark imagery was intentional as well as exceptional! Was this a fluke? Not at all ...but... this was totally unexpected by the entire world of music as a whole!! ~just like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" - these songs which are covers... are now theirs!!
