Hope you talking about Simon and Garfunkel because if you're talking about disturbed you must be youngen. Simon and Garfunkels original is amazing. This song told the future.
Simon and garfunkel's version was on point for the time that they released it. This version is the very power update with a lot of hope.

“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence?
It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.
Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.
Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls.
Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.
Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy.
One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”
Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.
While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.
Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history.
The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”

Great story but not the story behind the song. It was written by Paul Simon, who took a few months to get the lyrics right, after sitting in the bathroom in darkness, playing his guitar, and lost in his thoughts, hence the line 'Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.'
It wasn't written about Sandy Greenberg by Art Garfunkel. It just resonated with him due to the way Art Garfunkel would look out for him at college.
I've spent probably a year now watching reactions to Disturbed's Sound of Silence. I can say with some authority, this is the BEST reaction. Respectful of the piece, and honest and heart-felt. Thanks.

I've been binge watching today and seen load of the same reaction and it's priceless. Some tears, much emotion. But it's the ''Wow'' at certain intervals of note change that's the best x
So refreshing to see someone listen to the entire piece without constantly breaking the flow to flap their gums. You only truly get David's interpretation of the music and lyrics by letting the song build Constant interruptions destroy the flow. Such a powerful piece I never tire of listening to it. Like most of us, that exhalation of breath at the end demonstrates the effect this rendition of the song has on almost everyone that hears it, it simply takes your breath away.

Another unexpectedly moving piece was Zombie, covered by Bad Wolves. They were supposed to be the back up band, not the recorded, and when she died the first recording day, they knew won't worthy of it san,kanga ,an bloody szrrp.

I agree. I discovered it several years ago (I’m a big fan of covers) and was dumbstruck by how the interpretation is so much better than the original. Love exposing others to it for the first time and everyone is blown away. (Check out Metallica’s Turn the Page).
I was born in 1968. Heard this song on the radio for years. Never had much effect on me at all. Til now. Ive always liked Disturbed, but this puts them in rarified air. Everytime I hear this, I have tears running uncontrolably down my face. Never has a song affected me this much. I dont suffer from depression and the like, but this....this bares the example of what it must feel like. And the strange thing is, I absolutely love this version
It's not a cover, it's a revival.. they included that in their album.
When he hits “ and the people bowed and prayed”, it still has the ability to raise the hairs on the back of my neck and arms, even after listening to it when it first came out.

The entire song has does that for me...
This is by far the best rendition of Sound of Silence. The darkness at the beginning draws the listener in and builds vocally showing us the frustration the singer experiences railing against the silence leading to anger at the end building to the crescendo and takes us down from the high in a catharsis. The originally sadly stayed monotone and failed to truly express the emotions hidden within the lyrics.
the next portion of the lyrics "to the neon god they made".....You can almost imagine what Moses felt after the first trip to the Mountain and returned to the gold calf being worshipped.
Now that is an honest and true reaction video. No ego, no interruptions, just a pure emotional reaction. Thank you.
When David sung this cover..I was crying my heart out. Because it is exactly what is happening to our world RIGHT NOW..I am 69 yrars old and I love this rendition so much I listen to it every single day..He should win an AWARD FOR THIS SONG..GOD BLESS HIM !!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I'm 68 and I absolutely fell in love with the original version and loved it until I heard THIS version... I've listened to this version at least 25 times today and I have gotten goosebumps every single time... David's voice is stunning... I have heard that he was classically trained and I believe it... I couldn't tell it when he sings his heavy metal though....

I don't think this man could have interrupted this song if he wanted to, I believe like me he was to enthralled with the song to do anything but stay captivated by it's power & ride it out till it was over & then released.
How many times I've heard Disturbed's version and STILL, i feel such strong emotion from it. I remember when S&G first put it out and how at that time, I thought, 'Awww .... how soft. So cutesy'. Fact is, I'm 71 now, a budding and published poet, and recorded singer who chucked it all away for a Marine Corps career. I've seen 2 consecutive years of war without let up Death, destruction, pain and suffering coupled with the happiness of hope for a future of peace and tranquility were my constant companions.
With this rendition, I can still feel the pain, the angst, the anger and frustration and indeed, the RAGE at a world that didn't listen. At least I also found that I can still cry, let out MY rage at a world so lost.

I'm 66, I only served A few years in (74-77) missed Vietnam by just a few months. Lots of people told me I missed nothing. But. Sometimes I think that I needed to prove something to myself. People think "Hello darkness my old friend" is dark, IMO I think "Silence like a cancer grows" to me is the darker lyric.
Man does that lyric haunt me.

That's the line I identify with the most, I don't know what Simon intended when he wrote it, but it seems like a repudiation of secular Soviet socialism. Everyone is afraid to speak because of the KGB, it's an atheist society where they're made to worship the State, and Russia actually does have some cathedralesque subway stations built by the Soviets and the people get their propaganda at the tenement halls.
I imagine it was written more about the US which definitely has some parallel experiences, but the Soviet system was this song implemented deliberately and brutally.

Retro bigotry. Gotta love it! Your attempt to disguise your dislike or hatred of atheism, secular and socialism by using as an example a near 40 year dead (counting from the fall of the Berlin Wall) form of government, isn't even clever it's so obvious.
There are legitimate arguments against some forms of socialism. I'd might even concede to you secularism if agreed about the definition of the term.
But, explain to me, though (remembering there are *literally* hundreds of *millions* of gods conceptualized throughout the history of humanity), why not believing in *your* god amongst the *millions* is an issue, some kind of detriment in your head or any of your business even to began with?! You realize the song was written 60 years ago when the USSR was very real and socialism/communism was still expanding. It's a perfectly timely reference. Also, Soviet style socialism is very much alive in North Korea, and while China has ditched the economics of socialism they've kept the equally terrible Stalinist police state. I didn't reference either of those countries because given the slim chance Paul Simon was thinking/dreaming of socialism it would be in the USSR.
Also, I can make the case religion saves people from worship themselves and their State without choosing any particular religion. I do think some religions are better equipped to be a buffer to State tyranny than others, but regardless your athiest rant is irrelevant, and kind of cringey. It's amazing you can parrot some athiest 101 talking points as though you have something unique and interesting to say.
After watching many a reaction, I think the piece that now gets to me most, especially with the visuals of the music video, is "People writing songs that voices never share". The metaphor of a song and its implications that each one of us has a story, an experience, a song to share with the world, but none of us dare to let it out.
His vocal range is unbelievable especially for a man makes the hair on my entire body stand on end every time I hear it

I think simon and garfunkel was singing it as hope that you would listen to the warnings, disturbed sang it as anger that most of us did not listen and with fear of if we continue not to listen but still holding out some of the original hope that we have a last chance at listening
I've watched countless reactions to this song, from vocal coaches to singers and composers, but I come back to this reaction because your reaction is the most authentic and genuine, you don't criticise David's amazing vocal range, nitpick on the smallest thing, you appreciate it for what it is, a masterpiece from a very talented singer, thank you. ☺️

I’ve been lucky enough to hear David Draiman sing this live and it’s spine-tingling. I love the way the song builds and builds and you can feel the big “neon god they made” line coming and you know he’s going to do something epic with it- and then he brings out that gritty growl he has. I get chills every time.

I am thoroughly convinced that this is the finest cover ever done. I'm 53, so the classic original is part of the soundtrack to my childhood. My tendency to always side with the original was blown away and shattered by this version. S&G was amazing, but this destroys it. It conveys the hopelessness better than the original. And thanks to the visuals, you are still left with a feeling of hope.

Wow! I didn't know that...but I get it. When you're doing the exquisite work that he does vocally, you're in that headspace of executing it technically and with the range and power he brings into it as a trained singer. Then with the music and his vocals building it, it is extremely difficult not to be moved by this message. The official video seen here adds the crowning touch of the music perfectly matched with the imagery.
I worry about anyone who listens to this and DOESN'T cry! :)

I thought the original was more of an......acceptance of the darkness and documentation of how it came about. Disturbed's version is the righteous wrath of a good person fighting the darkness and acceptance.

Believe it or not, this is the writer Paul Simons favorite version of the song
I take some solace in that Paul Simon himself cried. So I don't feel so bad. The original was kind of an anthem for my generation. That was a time of prayerful sorrow being right after the JFK assassination, and this version is a primal scream defining how we've grow little since the old days. It's magnificent. And timely.
David draimen actually met Paul simons at a chef Ramsey party after he covered this song and Paul told him thats how this song was supposed to be, that just wasn't their genre they where folk singers

Thank you for listening to the piece all the way through before you commented. It has to be heard in its entirety to get the full impact of the words and emotions. The best thing I ever heard about this piece was that Simon and Garfunkel's rendition made you think, Disturb's made you FEEL!

I don’t usually like covers but I love this version, especially with today’s goings-on. Song has more meaning every time I hear it, and I was around for the original.

Without a doubt, the most powerful live performance I've ever witnessed from a hard rock/ heavy rock band...the studio version is gorgeous, but this particular live performance brings me to tears as well

I really appreciates his genuine reaction to the song and that he has the guts to show his emotions. It is a very powerful version. When I heard it the first time and all the other times to, it gave me goosebumps and I always gets tears in my eyes.
It's not having guts, it's been true to himself, his emotions, and live as a human, I don't believe that even half of the person's who listened to this the first time didn't cry, or at least felt the power and urge to do. If you listen to the word, and let the music flow into your ears, without anything else breaking your attention., you can't stop them.

Oh wow! Sir what a wonderful reaction i got joy out of watching your eyes tear up! That is exactly what happened to me , I grew up with the Simon & Garfunkel version but to be quite honest I have never listened to the lyrics until I saw Disturbed perform this on the Conon O'brien tv show and when i saw it, back in 2016 I was glued to my tv screen! You couldn't pry my away i was hypnotized and mesmerized! And I can honestly thank David Draiman & Disturbed. that i heard the lyrics, every single word for the very first time after 50 some odd years! And when it was over all i could utter was WOW! WOW! WOW!.... even now after 4 yrs of watching Disturbed perform this live on the Conon O'brien TV show I still say WOW! WOW !WOW! I just love this rendition the original never really grabbed me like this version did and a lot of it has to do with the group Disturbed because i've heard the original countless of times....so thank you my friend for your genuine reaction!
Rob, I have studied voice and classical music for 20 years. Opera snob - yep!!! A friend of mine told me I had to listen to this song. When it was over I just had to sit quiet and let the tears run down my face. There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song. I felt so deeply in love with this interpretation I had to see it live, so I went to a Disturbed. 99% heavy metal, then this song comes on. The entire crowd silenced, cell phone lights were raised, some had lighters, then entire crowd of sweaty gross heavy metal fans joined in unison at the top of their lungs. It was actually quite a spiritual moment. Tears were flowing every where, including mine. In my opinion, this is the most amazing cover of a classic song I have heard. David's voice was just stunning and awe-chilling... and the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking... You have to watch the live Conan version...

There is a lot to be discovered and felt in most subgenres of metal. The vocals can be hauntingly beautiful, whether they are clean or dirty, the harmonies created by several bands that have dual lead guitarists cannot be found elsewhere. Does this mean all metal is good, or other genres are bad? Certainly not, but to limit yourself is folly, I think.

Amazing, you know metal gets a bad rap and people think it's one sound. But it's actually one of the most diverse genres out there. Lyrics and vocals on many songs are really emotional and dark.
"There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song"... why would you cut yourself off to some of the most raw emotional music that has ever been created? In 1991, as a senior in high school, I embarked on a choir trip to New York and saw Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables on Broadway up front and personal. That same year, I was introduced to the Black Album by Metallica via Enter Sandman being incessantly played on the radio. I'm telling you, as a choir kid, I had never been exposed to the raw emotion of metal musicians until then. I immediately procured a copy of "And Justice For All" and that sealed the deal. Don't close your eyes to what's out there, you may be surprised at what you will find. There are hidden gems out there that can change your lifestream and philosophy.
If you don't love this song you are dead on the inside.

Paul Simon called David Draiman (lead singer for “Disturbed”) to say how amazed he was at their interpretation of his masterpiece. Draiman spoke about it in an interview. He was understandably stunned. Draiman is well-regraded as one of metal’s best voices. He trained in synagogue with his dad, who was the Cantor. He has an enormous range! To sing with the passion he does, taxes him and his voice greatly. I have so much admiration for him!

David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! First time I heard Disturbed's version, I cried. He sang it with anger, frustration, vengeance, then finally acceptance. It's though it was going through the stages of grief. I loved it.

I love watching people react to this song...esp when people don't know what they are in for. His eyes/voice pierce your soul. Someone else mentioned it below but I do love the Conan version better than the video but it's only because I think the passion is taken up a notch. You should check out Dancing with the Stars performance of this...because the guy who is dancing it is actually DEAF so that adds a whole new layer of emotion to the song. Great reaction as always!

My wife to be - her 5 year old nephew absolutely loves this. Back of the car, he sits and sings along. Knows most of the words. It's amazing. And as this song picks up he little voice picks up and he almost imitates it perfectly. It's incredible. This is the greatest cover of any song ever made. Unreal.
