The truth is, out of all the singing groups of that era, all the Motown groups or Philly Soul Sound groups, The Dells were the one that perhaps had the best voices. Just incredible. Listen to their first big hit "Oh What A Night" from 1955.
this is music here this was one of my mothers favorites she would like to play around the house this brings some wonderful memories here the dells was the best ever.
R.I.P. Guys!!! Johnnie Carter died in 2005 & Marvin Jr., died in 2009, & last but not least, Chuck Barksdale died, I think in 2015, he sung in the harmonies! The other 2 are still alive, Verne Allison, & Mike MCGill the two of the three part harmony!!!
The Dells are one of the greatest R&B souls groups of All-time. Check out: "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind", Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation"!"🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
GUURRRLLL, you went waaayyy back on this one! The late 60s... 😱 Definitely a "blue lights in the basement" slow-drag song!!! It doesn't get better than this.💯🔥🎶💖
I read a comment that says his voice was so soulful. I'd have to second and even third it. I don't think I've heard anyone replacing a Marvin Jr.'s voice & he held that note!!! R.I.P. guys!!! Bless the 2 that are left.
It was 1970. I was riding around in a car with my neighborhood boyz. I was only 15 and the driver was 25. We were sipping beers, and smoking some good stuff. They plugged in an 8 track tape and guess what was playing…yep, this very tune. I wasn’t feeling any pain, and the groove sounded like it played forever! Those were the daze! Thx for the memories!😂
If you like this song by the Dells, then you will absolutely LOVE, "Give your baby a standing Ovation". Also, have you heard "Black Pearl" by Sonny Charles and the Checkmates. It is the perfect "honor song" for black women. Go to UA-cam and watch the video. That song "Black Pearl" should be the black woman's anthem.
Those basement walls hold many many secrets, if you wasn't there you wouldn't understand!! "The Grind" TJHS Class of "72" reppin!! #StoneColdCLASSIC🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Soon as I saw this thumbnail, I knew I had to stop and look at your reaction to Marvin Junior's held note 😆So you had your powerhouses in Motown like the Temps and The Tops, then you have your Philly Soul in The Delfonics then you go to Chicago where you have The ChiLites and THE MIGHTY DELLS. I believe this maybe their signature song but my favorite is 'The Love We Had (Stays on my mind)'
GenXer here, since youre going there with the soul era. I got a great one for you. Dee Dee Sharp- What color is love. I guarantee you and your husband will love that one
Ashley, this song was originally recorded and released in 1965 on the Vee-Jay label. It was re-recorded and re-released in 1968 on the Cadet label, a subsidiary of Chess Records of Chicago, IL. The Dells are from Harvey, IL. a suburb of Chicago, IL.
I grew up in hazel crest, IL and we lived less than 5 minutes from where they grew up. I think Marvin junior said chess told him he couldn’t sing. He was so wrong.
I turned 9 in the Summer of '68 when this song came out just after Dr. King was killed. This is one of the songs I remember because music was always playing in our house thanks to my Dad. Everybody used to try to hold that note and it became a dare game. So hilarious.🤗
The extended version was darn near a baby maker. 1968 15yrs old at a Philly neighborhood basement party! Gotta make sure your close to her cause you have a idea the songs playing soon....
Johnnie Carter & Marvin Jr.'s voices were the ones. The shrill voice you hear, the one that starts the song, is Johnnie Carter. And the other, that also has main verses & holds that note at the end, is Marvin Jr. You refer to him as holding the note for, first, 30 seconds, then he held it for a year!!! YEAH! Marvin Jr.!!!
Yes indeed, he held that note much, much longer than this. Even his other singers had looked at him to make sure he was alright. I could not believe my ears or my eyes
This song was a standard play at blue light house parties long after it was it was no longer a current hit. You could "slow drag" (more like slow grind) for over six minutes.
He held that note for a year 😂😂😂😂❤ you ain't lying young lady 😅❤
yes
They’re the ones who sung mostly all the songs on “The Five Heartbeats” movie
Great movie and yes they did!!
The Five Heartbeats was a great movie. It's sad that people didn't watch it. The soundtrack is a 5!!
My dad specifically wanted this song played during his funeral as his last dedication to my mom.
Your dad was a true man.
Marvin Junior’s voice was so soulful🎼🔥✊🏾
His voice influenced David Ruffin, Teddy Pendergrass and many more. David Ruffin nicknamed Marvin "Iron Throat"
Marvin Junior's gruffy lead tenor/baritone, and Johnny Carter's soaring falsetto here are unmatched.
Saw them live about 20+ years ago and he STILL held that note
The truth is, out of all the singing groups of that era, all the Motown groups or Philly Soul Sound groups, The Dells were the one that perhaps had the best voices. Just incredible. Listen to their first big hit "Oh What A Night" from 1955.
The Dells were no a Motown nor Philly group, they predated the Motown era having started in 1953 while in high school in Harvey, IL.
@@Nomad-vv1gk That is essentially what I said.
I have them as one of my Pandora stations. Their music is ABSOLUTELY timeless. Babies still being made to their music.😅😅
The ultimate in DooWop! They DooWoped the cramp out of this song! Genius stuff here folks. Pure genius!!😂
Old school "slow drag" classic tune. ✅✅👍🏾👍🏾🎤🎤💯💯
Yessir
Harvey Illinois ain't no drag about this real slow music a slow dance
Oh yes, especially when we used to do that dip to the beat. Damn, talking about making love on the dance floor. The good old days ❤
"He held that note for a year". 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I believe this is a 1960's song... Mr. Marvin Junior still pierces my soul when I hear him sing. Lawd have mercy...
The greatest slow drag song.
Another great song by them is “The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind). Check that one out.
Yes...My Favorite Dell song

Everything Dells is fire! ❤🔥
This took me back when I was a teenager going to those blue lights party, and all we did was slow drag.
This song was my introduction to slow jams. I was 5 years old when I first heard this. The soundtrack of my life. ❤
Oldie, but goodie!

Number one group FOREVER !!!!

I read a comment that says his voice was so soulful. I'd have to second and even third it. I don't think I've heard anyone replacing a Marvin Jr.'s voice & he held that note!!! R.I.P. guys!!! Bless the 2 that are left.
Hi Ms. Ashley, The Dells, a Great group. I also like "Oh, What A Night".. ♠Mr.G..
One of the greatest groups of all time. Went to see them live about 20+ years ago and he STILL held that note
There's a live version of this on youtube from 1972 that's absolutely amazing and it's great seeing them perform it.
The album version doesn't do this song justice, check out the live version that they did. You want be disappointed.
The dells got this one stand my corner live that's really nice
It was 1970. I was riding around in a car with my neighborhood boyz. I was only 15 and the driver was 25. We were sipping beers, and smoking some good stuff. Marvin Junior was a "beast" on the microphone !
A real true BEAST !!
You have to react to the dells - the love you had stays on my mind. You will not be disappointed.
Bought The Five Hearbeats Movie Soundtrack in the 90's & this was on it ... playing it since .. & the longest note {Wow Always blow me away}
I turned 9 in the Summer of '68 when this song came out just after Dr. King was killed. This is one of the songs I remember because music was always playing in our house thanks to my Dad. Everybody used to try to hold that note and it became a dare game. So hilarious.🤗
Legendary group you should dive right on into!
Why didn't they tell you to do the live video!!!! You miss a gem!.
Amen
Yessss❤❤❤❤ amazing
A masterpiece.nice reaction
You need to listen to the Dramatics and hear their harmony, Be my girl, In the rain, Fell for you, I can't get over you,
This the love jam back in my day. Men were romantic and debonair back then. That is why more people got married back than today. Wheeeew!
One of my favorites from the mighty Dells. John E. Carter member of the Dells was also a founding member of the R&B / doo -wop group The Flamingos.
The extended version was darn near a baby maker. 1968 15yrs old at a Philly neighborhood basement party! Gotta make sure your close to her cause you have a idea the songs playing soon....
This is old school at its best.
Possibly the best soul song form the era. They don't make music like this anymore.
The Dells was in my time, the late 50’s and 60. And stayed strong after that. Also love Oh What A Night. I have the 45 records. 💜
Summer of 1968
Year I wad born, hello
OMG!!!....You look gorgeous.......I swear you look like the ripest sapodilla on the tree.......love the new look
My jam ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ashley this song came out in 1955. You are listening to them just singing the song in 1972.
I love the way you are❤❤❤❤❤❤
Actually, Stay In My Corner burst onto the airwaves during the 60’s. Lead vocalist is known for holding the longest single note ever recorded…
Released in 1968😊
🩵🩵🩵 one of my favorite groups, you need to see the live video for this song?
You gotta see the live video of their performance.
Yes indeed, he held that note much, much longer than this. Even his other singers had looked at him to make sure he was alright. I could not believe my ears or my eyes
You said it! Wasn't afraid to sound like this. There's many male singers out there that can sing but they won't. Thats why I hate music today.
I was so hoping you were going to be checking out the video of their live performance on the TV show “Soul” of this one…a must watch.
This song was a standard play at blue light house parties long after it was it was no longer a current hit. You could "slow drag" (more like slow grind) for over six minutes.
Maurice White on drums here. A few years later, he would form Earth, Wind & Fire.
Plz listen to The Commodores “Just To Be Close To You”
It was House parties blue lights and a lot of slow dancing😊
Ashley you have to do the love that stays on My mind by the dells that's even better than stay in my corner
First comment i know you got a husband but you’re beautiful
"King Osirus" ->If You Stay Darlin (You) Make Me So Proud? Stay Baby!
those drums are banging
From 1953 to 2012 legendary
I'm still trying to hit that note by Marvin Junior.
This was normally a last song played at the party the extended version 😂😂😂.
Released in 1965🎶💖
Still sounds good 12.26.2024!!!
David Ruffin call Marvin Junior iron lung
