This is 2021, and there is no group or singers that can BLOW like the Dells. Also, what singers do you know today that can even sing like that to a live audience? NONE!!!! This is pure God given talent. Melvin Junior is the one that hit that long, long note and Johnny Carter who has the high, high pitch voice. Both are deceased.
Marvin Junior hit the long note, and Johnny Carter hit the high notes. The Dells are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, both have passed. The Dells were together 50 years or so, back to the 50s. I believe their last hit was in the 90s with "A Heart is a House for Love" from Robert Townsend's movie "The Five Heartbeats" which they served as technical consultants. Pretty amazing, they were still sounding sweet.
The Dells started in 1952 and officially retired in 2021. (60 years of Musical Excellence) with one personnel change in 1961. Johnnie Carter, replaced Johnny Funches. Johnnie Carter, Marvin Junior and Chuck Barksdale are deceased. Baritone (Michael mickey McGill) and Second Tenor (Verne Allison) are the Surviving Members of The Mighty Dells, both are 85 years old. Their Mentors were: The Moonglows!
These Guys are from Harvey Illinois a suburb of Chicago... They are a part of my youth... My favorite song by them is THE LOVE WE HAD STAYS ON MY MIND... It is a masterpiece!
Ohhh... The Mighty Dells!... I remember going to dances and when the D.J. played 'STAY" you looked for your boyfriend to dance with because the song was so long! you didn't want to be with anyone else!! Good memories of my teenage years ,the absolute best music ever!! Thanks for your reactions.
I am from Indiana and the Dells are from Harvey , Ill. They are the only singing group that I know that never left their home of Harvey to live anywhere else. I saw them perform in Gary, Indiana back in the 90's. The mayor of Gary was having a Christmas party at their Genesis center. My wife and I were guest of my uncle . Tickets were $100.000 per person but we were happy to get in as my Uncle's guest. We were eating the dinner there when my uncle asked when were the Dells coming out. H was told by one of the Mayor's Assistants that they were having a problem getting the funds to pay them. My Uncle went to their dressing room and asked them how much money they needed to perform. When they told him of their previous arrangement with the city, he reached in his pocket and wrote them a check. He sent for me to come to their dressing room and I met them. They were just regular guys with a lot of talent. We laughed and joked and I told them how much I loved their music. I told them I wrote a lot of love letters using some exerts from some of their songs. They put on a unbelievable show. They sounded better in person. You would have loved them. The lead singer passed away a couple years ago.
@@ShawnandMel4Life I love your reaction when he held that note. On the studio version of this song, he held the note about 18 seconds ( listen to the studio version for comparison) The only other person i can recall holding a note that long was Melba Moore singing another beautiful song " Falling" 😧😧 . Give her a listen.
An absolute favorite of mine! Back in the 70s, this is what we called “belly rubbing” music because of the sensual, slow dancing we did. Have mercy but this brings back so many memorizes❤️. Great reaction y’all.
They are some of the best in four part harmony. My dad loved them. Listen to them harmonize on Nadine, Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation, Long Lonely Night, You Don't Care. The Love We Had, My Pretending Days are Over

I could just picture my self sitting on a secluded beach with the headphones on listening to this song on a beautiful day surrounded by palm trees and a warm breeze in my face 👍🇬🇧☀️
I see this was a reaction from over a year ago however I grew up on this music. I honestly believe that the Dells were Chicagoland's answer to Detroit's the Temptations. Both phenomenal groups. There was an unofficial competition between the groups from Chicago and the groups from Detroit. The Dells are from Harvey Illinois one of the predominantly Black suburbs of Chicago.
I love the intimate setting here, although why The Dells were performing in front of such a small crowd is beyond me. The first time I heard this on album that long-held note about knocked me off my seat. Such a simple sentiment expressed so beautifully with the vocal interplay and arrangement. The Dells are a musical treasure. Just noticed this great upload.
That’s him, no studio equipment!!! Yes, I heard the other song by the Dells 1st & that was Marvin Junior holding that long note! Also, maybe you heard of Stan Latham, if not, that’s Sannaa Latham’s father. He was director on that video. In case, you’re not sure of who Sannaa Latham is? Remember the movie, “Love & Basketball,” that was her when she was little. She has a new movie coming out, I think in a week & up until about 4-6 years ago her father was still directing. And that’s it for your trivia! Love y’all’s!!!
Marvin Jr was the guy singing the baritone and falsetto. Johnny was singing the high notes. I don’t remember their last names or the names of the rest of the group only that they are great together!
