Tool Live. Sacramento. 1998. Remastered. Full Concert. Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA. August 26th, 1998. Edited and remastered by ToolArchive. www.toolband.com
I was 15 in 1998 and a big fan of Undertow and Aenema. I didn't know about Opiate. Somehow, in those early days of the internet, by way of crazy luck- I managed to connect in some fan chat room (remember those???) with a guy in Arizona who said he had bootleg VHS tapes of shows for sale. I sent 25 bucks cash through the mail that I had earned cutting grass and I more-than-half expected to be simply scammed. However, about a week later, a thick padded manila envelope arrived with a copy of this very show, plus most of another one (London 7/21/94). Watching Maynard dance and pull off the screams live and pour his heart out on stage forever changed my perspective on music and what it was all about. I thought the actual performances were awesome, but even then I was underestimating just how good they were. The set lists are powerful, and the songs were not "old" yet.... Danny and Adam are perfect, of course, but Maynard's vocals seem to be completely effortless and the emotional inflections are gorgeous. Plus, in this particular show, he appears to be genuinely happy and excited to be performing, opposed to his typically reserved personality. Tool concerts in recent years are still entertaining, but this was the Golden age. This is as good as it gets.
What an awesome story/memory....difference of past a current Maynard is that he’s just my psychedelic now and wants it to be about the music...u can tell his personality was diff back then, tryin to be center of attention, mr jokester, etc...he’s changed and is all about the music and wants people to feel It rather than focus on him.

In the beginning of the show Maynard looks like a mix between David Bowie, Ric Flair, and any combination of a televangelist and by the end he was a bra-clad engineer from Prometheus.
Only just discovered this gem. I mixed the sound on this tour. And this video captures the emotion of the whole show. Definitely the best set list. Finishing on flood was always incredible. A band ahead of their time. Can’t believe it’s nearly 20 years ago
Roly Oliver I seen them at 98 ozzfest in deer creek amphitheater in Indiana, and this was the same motif. They hit the stage right when the sunset. There was a war between the lawn and pavilion. The entire lawn was ripped up & set on fire. People stuffed beer cups full of sod and lit them on fire, threw them at the pavilion. The pavilion would throw them back. There was so much shit getting thrown it nearly blacked out the sky. There was three huge fires. It rained. It was pretty much the best show ever & such an amazing evening.
Wow, you’re so lucky to have worked with one of the greatest bands ever arguably during their peak. This show and the night before it were my first two tool shows. Changed my life forever. Thank you.
I was there, and I wish I was smart enough to describe the energy at Memorial that night. It was on par with a spiritual experience. This was the best show I would ever see, nothing has even come close.
Amber I had a couple drunk girls doing that when I saw APC. And the sound was so quiet (despite being in the front) that they were louder than Maynard :/
There are days when you waste time on the internet. Then there are days when you are listening to the new Tool album and you remember seeing them live and search for old shows. Then there are days when you find that show and proceed to punch yourself in the crotch with joy that someone has uploaded that show to view for eternity.
Maynard in his prime...This tour was my first Tool concert, Indianapolis and then Cincinatti. I will forever be grateful for that. The energy was breathtaking. Never before or since have I experienced such a powerful performance of pure awesomeness. Many many humble and sincere thanks to all involved in making this video and sharing it with all of us.
I've said it before, but again, thank you for your selflessness and generosity. It has not gone unnoticed. This may be the best TOOL show of all time. So great.
+brian patrick YOU ARE RIGHT.......I HAVE NO IDEA HOW COME THIS BAND SOUNDED LIKE THE WAY THEY USED TO SOUND.......THEY WERE GREAT,,,THATS THE TOOL WE ALL LOVE...
God that performance of H was an absolute masterpiece. I wish I could go back in time and be there to witness it live. I guess I'll just have to watch it a hundred more times on here.
It's really hard to epress the significance of seeing this for someone like me who was there that night. It was the 90s. People didn't walk around with cinema quality camera equipment in their pockets. When you went to a concert, it was a one-time experience. You would take it in and then leave knowing for certain that you would never experience it again. All you had was your memories. But by some miracle, it turns out some absolutely magnificent bastard was there filming. And that same magnificent bastard, or whoever ended up with the footage, decided to bless the whole world by putting on this magical video web machine. Now, here I am 25 years later rexperiencing something I thought would only ever live in my head. And it even includes the singing genitals I genuinely wondered if I'd made up. I can't thank you enough for this gift.
Seen mjk so many times probably over 20 watched everything online and I keep coming back to this show I think this is his best performance ever you was truly blessed to be at this one
Whoever filmed, edited and downloaded this, I love you. So great to see Maynard fooling around, SMILING, joking. Amazing performance as well, but to see Maynard like this is just priceless. Made me instantly happier on a really crappy day. Will be returning to this concert again :)
I think shit got real long before he removed the wig. These guys don't Fuck around. Brilliant group and I fucking love them. I would never pass up a chance to see them. Great show by the way. Thanks for sharing!!
This could be my favourite performance ever. Right up there with the best. Maynard is a musical fuckin shaman if ever there was one. Hes a genius, I'd pay thousands to go back in time and be there. I get goosebumps watching it from here. I choose my words wisely when I say Maynard Keenan is the most important Song writer and performer of all time and this amazing band were is his platform. I always said I wouldn't go Download Festival again until Tool or the Mars Volta performed. This year my prayers were answered. I'm all set to see them in 3 weeks, Tool are so much more than a band.
I was 2 years old during this tour. My brother seen them live for his first ever concert and he also would always play Tool next to my crib when I was a baby and always stayed a fan. Thanks big brother if you come across this!! 🤟
I AM BLOWN THE FUCK AWAY AT THIS ABSOLUTE PERFECTION . When people refer to Tool in their prime performance era, this is what I imagine it to be. Also, not being able to sell the shirts and key chains made me chuckle. Wild.
I've gone to see TOOL 7 times, and never have seen them play Eulogy. But when they played Lost Keys into Rosetta Stoned for the 10,000 Days tour, that was nearly as amazing.
Holy hell..the memories this brings back..1st time seeing them in Kansas City in 98, OZZFEST, same setlist!! Everyone all day was acting like fools and idiots..as soon as Tool came on Everyone stopped. And fixated themselves on the greatest band ever. Most unbelievable experience.
How did you find this??? I was there. Unforgettable show!! We'd seen Buzz Osborne at the Mansion Inn earlier in the day. Memorial Auditorium is such a small, square venue that sound over-pressure is incredible. It was a great night. My wife was alive then and dancing in the aisles!! Ænima rocked and No Quarter soured me on Zeppelin for years.
19:15 There is something to be missed nowadays with how powerful Maynard was as a frontman. Not to say that he isn't powerful anymore, but as a band grows wiser and more mature, that raw energy seems to dissipate a bit. Probably some of you will not like this comment, but it's just my two cents.
I agree. Maynard here was a pure beast in terms of performance. What an incredible performance. I thought the singing in Glass House 1996 was good, But here it is on yet another level.
i wanna say this was the last year maynard performed as "the front man". I think in 1999 all his up front and center antics came to end and he moved to the side out of the lights.
Not sure what happened. Wanna believe that during the conception of Lateralus he had a different approach in the way he wanted to deliver the music live. Different style different direction. Lateralus had a new angle and i guess it didn't require Maynard to be the "Live Maynard" from 92-98.
paisteuser06 as awesome as early Maynard was the way he performs now is much more “tool”, he’s an instrument, not a frontman. Watching pusicfer and APC shows he certainly doesn’t lurk in the shadows lol
This was my first Tool show, and it was insane! The Melvins opened for them, and Maynard's performance was truly mind altering for everyone there. Thanks for sharing!
i always enjoyed maynard in costume and character. the reverend act is hilarious and then strips down into just the bra and underwear so priceless. and thoose dance moves!
Amazing post/ Concert!!! I saw them on this tour with Melvins and would be hard to top! Even tho in Orlando Maynard was behind a curtain the whole time. It's not a surprise too me that it's been so long since a 'New' album release as its got too be hard to top what they already have done. All the memories will live on a long time! Thanks for sharing.
Gracias por tu trabajo!. Una pieza de la historia, Tool es una banda increible y el ramasterizado hace que mi sistema de audio me transporte al espacio 😵😵❤️
saw them in knoxville, tn 8/5/98 (so three weeks b4 this show) and it was mind blowing being right there watching these guys, one of the most amazing experiences of my life . danny carey is maybe the most underrated musicians ever!!!!!
Yeah, Kevin. Jeebus, man. Thanks for upping this. Some good memories from when I saw them. One stop was when they were on Lollapalooza with Snoop Dogg. Maynard dedicated Ænema to all the Snoop Dogg fans. It was hilarious. Cheers.
Maynard being Maynard. Wig, suit and a TIE! LOL Seen Tool 3 times. Danny Carey is a drumming God. His friend Neil Peart is watching from heaven with a smile on his face.
I fucking love this performance I swear this has to be one of the very best of their performances and I watch this whole thing on a weekly basis while pounding beer and playing guitar along with there songs in my room. It’s been the best thing to keep my alive and honestly so happy to have this. Thank you for uploading.

+6soulcontrol lol The Melvins were and are horrible. Tool always has the worst opening bands. Meshuggah, Failure, balh blah blah Primus does suck.
+Viewing Account Don´t forget King Crimson... fucking band!!!!
lamiaponlo092 I never saw that band.
+Viewing Account Isis opened for them one tour, they were pretty damned good.
WarMachine 1776
ISIS. Is that right.
great job remastering. clean crisp raw and brutally beautiful thanks!!
Thank you! This is a masterpiece!
Maynard's best performance!
So glad I followed them around on this tour. They were on fire! Thanks for the upload
This is awesome! Thanks for the upload
i always enjoyed maynard in costume and character. the reverend act is hilarious and then strips down into just the bra and underwear so priceless. and thoose dance moves!
Amazing! This show gets me through hard times.
One of my favorite Tool shows to watch. I'm sure you worked your magick. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks for sharing.
thanks for uploading.
once a year I go on a tool binge and this is always at the top of my list to revisit. goddamn, this would have been such an epic show to be at.
I was 19 when I saw this tour in Dallas TX. I’m 42 now and just saw them again in Dallas. Better than ever.
This is one of my favs; nicely done on the remaster, the audio actually has a little bass now lol
I can't believe I'm just now seeing this. And I'm so happy it's the first time 🤙
I love the all tool albums and eras,I think their concert is fucking amazing today
But I miss the "frontman Maynard" sometimes
Mind = Blown. Thank you.
ty for upload
I wish they'd release more live albums. So many gems here.
Was at this show awesome that someone got this well done.
That transition from Opiate to Flood was fucking *golden* .
Yeah, Kevin. Jeebus, man. Thanks for upping this. Some good memories from when I saw them. One stop was when they were on Lollapalooza with Snoop Dogg. Maynard dedicated Ænema to all the Snoop Dogg fans. It was hilarious. Cheers.
Went to every CA show for this tour. Every night was a different set. All were amazing but the San Jose State Event Center show was life changing.
Maynards dance during the eulogy solo had me in tears 😭
"Kevin sucks, this changes everything.

😂🤣😂🤣
Maynard being Maynard. Wig, suit and a TIE! LOL Seen Tool 3 times. Danny Carey is a drumming God. His friend Neil Peart is watching from heaven with a smile on his face.
Good lord, hallelujah! This is one of the best Tool shows on youtube.
I fucking love this performance I swear this has to be one of the very best of their performances and I watch this whole thing on a weekly basis while pounding beer and playing guitar along with there songs in my room. It’s been the best thing to keep my alive and honestly so happy to have this. Thank you for uploading.
Wholesome af, from one tool fan to another 🤘 I've been addicted to this concert during my workouts
Just fucking brilliant. Always and every time.
I cannot wait for that new album! This band will always be my favorite.
August
What do you think of it?
Peak Tool. The golden years.
They're still killing it
@@adamwinters4448 Nah.
This was a high point of artistic expression in live shows for tool. Theatrically.
I agree🧛🏻♂️🕯️
CAME TO HEAR SOBER AND ACCIDENTALLY SKIPPED PERFECT TO IT
Attended both the Memorial Auditorium shows.
It is so fucking awesome to see these old Tool shows popping up. Great audio too. My HatNachoi8 goes off to whomever videoed this and posted it.
