That's hilarious that he introduces Billy Howerdale as the guitar tech. For those who don't know, Billy Howerdale is the guitarist/backing vocals in A Perfect Circle. Just funny to watch it go that far back.
This is in my opinion, tools best live show. Everything about it is perfect, from the drumming, guitar playing, bass playing, talent, stage presence and Maynard’s vocals (which sound exactly like the record!)
Agreed! And Carey should be added to lists of best top 10 drummers ever. He hammers them, does all kinds of unique mixed up rhythms and is so precise and perfect on every set. Maynard is insanely talented and the whole band perfectly complements each other.
It’s not just that he’s amazing, he does it SO effortlessly. I watched the drum cam when he did Pneuma and it was amazing! He’s listed at the top 26th drummer of all time. I call bullshit. He needs to be top 5 or at least top 10. It’s hard to name anyone that does what he does to the level or better than he does it.
I've seen TOOL live 4 times but I regret so much that I never saw them back in this era when Maynard was out front doing his thing. Edit: Wow, 7 year old comment and now I've seen them 7 times. 2002 was my favorite but 2022 in KC from the 11th row was absolutely awesome. They nailed it and Maynard sounded awesome.
Anthony Lewis I don't think it's really stage fright.. sometimes for Puscifer when he's in character he's right up front stage. Idk what it is though. Maybe he just simply doesn't want to lol
Toolness1 those were the most violently sexy shows... pits were sick... I haven’t missed a show in nj or nyc since 1997... I’ve seen them at every venue.... his voice is pure sex.... hands down
Justin Chancellor hair evolution. 1996 - no hair, no beard. 2000's - Long Hair, no beard. 2010's - Long hair, moderate beard. Now - No hair, long beard.
I was a freshman in high-school when an older buddy forced me to go to this show with him. Never heard of Tool before. I left that show and immediately started saving for a guitar. I had to know how Adam did the intro to Stinkfist. The controlled chaos of the feedback intrigued me. Im so glad I got to see this live. I didn't even know the songs, but I remember when Maynard went into the alternate lyrics for Prison Sex I got the chills and knew this was MY BAND. "I thought I could wash the stain away". That lyrics is so hard!
I thought I could make it end I thought I could wash the stains away I thought I could break the circle If I seeped right into your skin So sweet was your surrender Having become one I have become my terror And you my precious lamb and martyr

I’ve listened H. Thousands of times it’s my go too song when I can’t think of anything too listen.. no matter how many times I’ve heard “I don’t mind” I’ve never not got goosebumps! The greatest band ever!
@timwins31 I read he gets vertigo from the crazy light shows these days, and when it gets bad, he moves his mic stand into a certain position, which is the signal to switch to the less intense light display. It's shitty. Aging sucks, but at least he's not any less passionate about any of his projects like people have assumed.
What I would give to see the Tool show I saw at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Maynard half white, half black dancing like a snake onstage during the Aenima album release......
@@pyocopyocoultra2047 having the drummer listen to a click trick keeps the show on a consistent beat through the whole song. While playing without a click track make the beat a bit more flexible and have the band speed up and slow down the tempo at will. Not just 1/4ths and 1/8ths
When I think of tool this is the era that is dear to my heart. Maynard’s stage presence added so much to their live performances during these years. Perfection isn’t easy to achieve but god damn it’s beautiful to watch.
@@riffgroove this might be an old/young thing or maybe you just dont do drugs, but the last tour with the bead curtain and just the shadow of maynard was a straight up religious experience. The church of light and sound that they are currently going for would honestly be worse with maynard taking all the attention in front. The fact that he goes full costume and hides behind a curtain basically means he agrees with me.
@@friedsensei I haven't gotten to see them on tour for their new album yet. I HAD tickets to see them in May of 2020 before Covid sent the world into hibernation. I will be seeing them finally in October. But over the years, I have seen TOOL a total of 11 times, including the first time at a small club right when OPIATE first came out. I can confidently state that the pre-Lateralus shows when Maynard performed at the front of the stage were much more memorable.
@@riffgroove yeah it could just be one of those things where the version you know is the best, but I saw them on the last tour and it has nothing in common with a club show. with floors in the stadium show its the most well curated audio/visual experience possible. The alex gray art alone is worth the price of admission, if you know his paintings its like a 3D expanded version of his art that is just made entirely to flow with the set, very little of the band on the screens
@@stickyjockythat would be weird though wouldn't it ' being fully gelded - although I hear the prosthetics they have these days are amazing ' plus the bonus of zero offsprings to drain you of you're money So yeah probably worth it
Maynard's face while singing and his gestures to direct you into his stories are unbeliavable. He can remain perfectly balanced ... never seen so much self confidence , like a Bodhisattva . His transmutation from the angry guy to the absolutely spiritual dimension of his Aenima stage characters is something beyond perfection
He looks like he is on Ketamine . Seriously . Ever try to walk on Ketamine searching for the ground with your feet having no reality of your equilibrium or time and space. Basically feeling like quicksand
@@CarrionMorris had the same impression emotional control, tonal quality, breathing capacity and the uncanny pitch of his screams, all seem to be linked to information processing on lsd... maybe he wasn't on it on the actual shows but in the rehearsals or the composition fase... who knows... i feel it aswell...
But you did, here on youtube. Not with your own eyes in person, sure. But its not about time nor place, its about the music through and through. So in a way, we've all seen them at this point in their career and that is a nugget of beauty within itself!
Thank you, ToolArchive, for all your great work. I've been bing-watching Tool concerts for the past month or so; I've watched 80 or 90 hours - and this is definitely one of their very best concerts on UA-cam. F*ing awesome!
I just said the same thing above. There's definitely something about the energy about this particular show. Can't pinpoint it. It's just something probably left unspoken.
HA! so true! also, he manages to make odd time signatures seem like 4/4 by having people watching him dance. To 4/4 i mean. which is rare. Tool don't even have many SEGMENTS of songs in 4/4. SOBER is, entirely, so is STINKFIST. Oh, and from Undertow, BOTTOM, PRISON SEX... I found it awesome that a Band's FIRST ALBUM starts in 15/16 "Intolerance".. actually it's in 4/4, but the opening main riff is 15/16 followed by 4/4, and repeat 15/16 and 4/4. Who the hell does that these days? TOOL.
i just cannot compliment this mastering enough. i am in school for audio engineering, and i'm going into a mastering-heavy course load in the fall and i hope i can be half as good whoever did this.

Nice little sneak peak at what would become the drum backbone of "Reflection" starting at the 46:39 mark. Since that song wouldn't be released until Lateralus in 2001 (5 years after this show), it's just another example of how long these guys work on music before it's formally released. It's calling me.....
I had a DVD set of 3 different live shows during the Lateralus Tour that I bought way back in the day and you can hear Adam messing around between songs playing the "Right in Two" riff. I always noticed it and thought it sounded so cool but it was only for about 15 seconds... a few years later when 10,000 Days came out I was like "Ive heard this before!"
In my 22 years as a Guitarist, I found in Tool the perfection I was looking for. To grow as a musician. I still don't have the words to describe what this band produces for me. I know that he borders on perfection in all his works of art
What blow's my mind is the song sounds exactly the same when he plays it now.. Just show how meticulous this band is about every single note, not only is it music.. it's a science.. MAGICAL. 🧙♂️
Mike Thieman Jr In my top 5 tool songs. I’m just on a journey when I listen to that song. Especially during the “hold your light” section. It’s just like riding the rhythmic rise and fall of giant ocean swells.

YES INDEED. I want to refine the audio even more. I'm going to do it, and when I do (give me a couple of weeks)... I'll repost this concert. It IS something special. The energy in this set is phenomenal.
Having a thoughful relationship with my own mother during my childhood and teen ages, jimmy results in a very personal song to me as well. Gotta admit this guy reaches my heart with his lyrics and sends me straight to the tears almost every time, is so emotional. Carey's drumming is simply beyond perfection. Founding deep personal attachment with most of their songs, specially The Patient, Parabola and jimmy, is making this band one of the best that have eve happened to me musically speaking; among my favs by far. Regret all the years I didn't payed the deserved attention.
I totally relate to it too... It's the only reason why I've always done an acoustic version of it every set I play. The chronological age may have been different, but exactly the same circumstances. Divorced parents, and mother, of course, had a stroke. I was only a couple of years older than Maynard though.

Lada, it’s fair to say that nada has been the same…and 30 years later, the feeling is just as raw. This band stands alone as one of the most unique and original bands of the past 30 years, PERIOD. There is no one of this era who sounds like TOOL or can claim their title!
This video is incredible. I love how it mostly emphasizes on Maynard so I can watch Danny play his drums. I feel so fortunate to have been listening to them since their debut album. Theyre the best.

When the time came he didn't wimp out on the screams. Much more screaming overall this tour than in 2020.
I give it 3 thumbs up.
This is the Tool I remember most fondly. What I wouldn't give to go back to 1997 on this Aenima tour and see them again.

That's hilarious that he introduces Billy Howerdale as the guitar tech. For those who don't know, Billy Howerdale is the guitarist/backing vocals in A Perfect Circle. Just funny to watch it go that far back.
I would think Tool fans know that by now, no? APC's been around for been 20 years, so...
Wasn’t a joke he actually was the guitar tech lol
“For those of you who don’t know” ha
Yeah, he really knew Adam's guitar tone and playing.
He says former tech, what was Billy’s project after/before apc I wonder...
This is in my opinion, tools best live show. Everything about it is perfect, from the drumming, guitar playing, bass playing, talent, stage presence and Maynard’s vocals (which sound exactly like the record!)
This remains an unparalleled recording - the audio is incredible. Danny Carey is a monster behind that kit!
Danny is unparalleled.
@@lonnieshelton1020 Oh he's my #2 behind Neil Peart.

CGranch probably age. He’s in his mid 50s now.
True, same for me
He's got stage fright to the max, he used to be high as a kite most the time to be able to perform up front; the unusual movements, the stare, etc
Anthony Lewis I don't think it's really stage fright.. sometimes for Puscifer when he's in character he's right up front stage. Idk what it is though. Maybe he just simply doesn't want to lol

When I think of tool this is the era that is dear to my heart. Maynard’s stage presence added so much to their live performances during these years. Perfection isn’t easy to achieve but god damn it’s beautiful to watch.

Live vocals and studio vocals are almost identical. Perfection.
Maynard is a genius. Just look at his body language, he doesn't give a shit its all about expression. It's a beautiful thing to witness.
