@@erinchristopher7871 Maybe Maynard is thinking of Arizona Bay. He wrote a song about wishing for California to sink into the ocean, later started a vineyard - did he join all the others in California? No, he chose Arizona. He might still be wishing for LA to sink.

I had been listening to her for at least 3 years before I showed up at this very concert. I knew that Maynard was a prick and that was very much confirmed by the way showed disdain for the people who listen to his music. I guess he thinks he's some kind of intellectual because he at some point came across the golden ratio or some shit. Anyway, the band would be so much better without him. On the other hand people that listen to the man and think that they're deep because they listen to them would suffer so I guess they do fill a niche.
No matter how many times I’ve heard this song over the last, about, 30 years, and no matter how many times I see the live video, Maynard still sends shivers down my spine, causing me to sit in reverence, and awe, of his vocals, and performance.
@eric8542005 Experimentation with any kind of drugs is pretty much a given with Maynard...he's talked about it, although not at length. But that being said, he's a PERFORMER. He's always taken his music/performance INCREDIBLY seriously. I highly doubt the dude has EVER been under the influence while onstage. In his book, "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things", he stresses how important his live performances are to him. I just can't see a man of his level of seriousness and overall gravitas going onstage (at the giant fuckin' Reading Festival, at that!) in any kind of altered state. It doesn't really compute.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this video. I was surrounded by death and illness, I felt completely useless and down. And then I saw this masterpiece. Helped me to feel alive again and it's so good to read all this comments.
This performance helped me with PTSD. I couldn't get on a bus without extreme terror. I did it with this song. I know Maynard had social phobia but if he can get up there and sing in a onesie, I can get on a bus. There are 100 reasons to love Tool, but I am forever grateful for this performance. It made me find my courage,
I've watched this video so many times i lost track. This is the most intense performance I've ever seen by a vocalist, the man looks completely possessed by the song. Absolutely wonderful!
@@gnatpiz Well, I know this artist, there is a similarity, my name is Sasha, but how do you like this music, see in full, the trumpet how beautifully enters ua-cam.com/video/F7bmyqfJ0ss/v-deo.html
@@gtyplkjh6570 Well hello, Sasha. The music is....interesting. I need to tell you a little about who I am so you understand my comments. I'm 72 years old, honest. In my younger years, my genre' was bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads. I grew up with some late 50's, and full 60's, 70's, 80's, and some 90's music. The biggest problem for me here is the language barrier, as an American, I don't speak Russian, but overall, my impression of the band is it seems like a fusion of Thrash/Speed Metal and Punk. I was surprised when the guitar started riffing on the high frets, that guy can play guitar. Because of the language, the lyrics came to me as just screaming/yelling, but that's my problem, not the bands. The drummer is consistent, the guitar is discordant but that is style, not poor playing. I LOVE the cello, I played a little in middle school. I love the song 'Rock Superstar' by Cyprus Hill and I think it's bass line is cello. The trumpet is VERY punk, it looks like an old car muffler, it's a very cool homemade instrument. I hobby build electric guitars (they are good guitars, but nowhere near professional level), and play a little. Because of my age, arthritis keeps me from making chord shapes, so I play like Keith Richards, 5 strings (no low E), tuned open G, and one finger barre chords. I can't read music so I just play free flow. What is interesting is that though I was never into speed metal/thrash, what flows out of me naturally is similar to what this guy plays, except I have no speed fingers. If I understand you correctly, you know the guitarist and band. If that's right, tell him 'Greetings!' from an old man in America. Between 2012 and 2020 I worked on the museum ship USS Iowa, and met many guests from around the world, including Russia and it's neighbors. All the Russians I have met have been very nice people and would talk extensively with them when I could.
To me that doesnt even look like a drug induced state. That looks like a man that's just so dedicated to performance and music, and has been putting himself out there, opening his emotions to the world, since the begging of his carreer. Theres plenty of bands you can look up to see how they perform on drugs, and it's a whole different kind of twitching and shriveling. This one looks controlled and completely consistent just with the message of the song.
Agree with you 100%. I have seen Maynard perform 3 times. Once with Tool and twice with APC and this is a man that knows exactly what he’s doing and how he wants to do it. And no matter if he is jerking on stage or look like he is jerking it, it’s done with purpose.
He does such an amazing job at portraying the insanity of alcoholism. Crippling down like that and scratching his chest, the feeling of having no control and the world falling down on you. This is arguably one of the best live performances of all time.
The first 50 sec of this song is the most haunting and beautiful sound I have heard in a very very long time. This performance is pure art and mesmerizing!!!
Maynard is portraying a character that being crushed by his addiction to substance and/or religion and is ironically using his addiction to soothe the wounds that are consequence of said addiction. Paul, the bass player, is portraying Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys.
I once saw a comment on another Tool concert vid that said that Tool is like if the patients from Outlast started a band, and now I can’t unsee it. They are a very strange but very cool band.
i've seen everything from metallica to rob zombie live, but this low res, low bitrate recording from 1993 is still the best live performance of any metal sub-genre to date.
Everyone here talking about Maynard being on drugs, and I still believe he's feeling the music as a whole, and he just gets absorbed by it. That's why you think he's on drugs.
Malika Thueler he's definitely channelling something for this performance, when he hits the chorus its nothing short of spine chilling. Maynard is an absolute vocal beast, and a one of a kind showman.
Junk Head agreed Maynard's performance of this song ...INTENSE!!! I guess that is why I listen to metal and heavy music in general so many emotions and expressions that just can't be rapped away...or sang with a pleasant melody
90's kid finding out a 90's song about addiction in 2023 while trudging through addiction issues better late than nevver, and it's none other than sober thank god
28 years later, this live performance is just as epic and hits just as strong as it did during that time of the debut. This band was so groundbreaking and much ahead of their time, it feels almost ethereal.
A short time after i saw this on tv recorded at reading festival in 93, they played in a small gig in my town Norwich (uk) in a venue called the waterfront.....bloody awesome gig.
Noticed a cool testament to their greatness: you pretty much never see "who's here in 20xx?" comments in Tool videos. It's a given that no one ever leaves.
To be able to vocalize to the ranges he does in this video while in obvious distorted posturing is absolutely mind blowing... good lord this band is amazing.
@@nickygrey7027 how much does vocal range increase? I can some what reach those notes like he does, and with insanely struggle somewhere around Axle range, I have quite a deep voice genetically. Any idea? Sbould I go singing? Shout I fucking blow my brains out? Thanks.
I am now 50 years old. I first heard Tool when I was 22 years old. The very first time I heard them I said to myself....."There's a lot more going on here than most people realize!!"
I will never tire of hearing this song. They are probably sick of playing it by now but I could hear it thousands more times. Favorite band of all time.

The late 80s / early 90s was an amazing time for pioneering music, imho (Death, Defiance, Atheist, IronChrist, Mr. Bungle, Dream Theater, King Diamond, Tool)
This performance is unreal. It's a depiction of such tortured loss of control that makes you feel deeply uncomfortable. It's impossible look away from.
There recording process has a lot to do with that too I would imagine. they don't edit that much with a bunch of effect, sometime they do to have the "album" quality but for the most part Tool is Tool
youre wrong milton. im en audio engineer/producer and im positive without any processing their music would still be popular because its not about the processing in their case. its pure talent tbh
and youre partially right but most bands as famous as tool use incredibly high quality/expensive studios. but even before they didnt their music was still popular or got them popular aka ANEMA the record itself sounded like trash but the idea of it was genius

46 here. My granddaughter LOVES Tool. I mean, big parental win for me and her momma. She says “Play the rock and roll music GiGi!” Indeed my child, we will play it.
Perhaps the single greatest live performance of a song in rock music history. Simply jaw-dropping, which is usually the case with Maynard and his boys.
Agreed. I'm almost 72, grew up with Cream, Zep, and Pink Floyd. This song has some of the most powerful lyrics I've ever heard. This is a different genre than Floyd, Gilmour emotes with his guitar. This guy ties vocal quality, powerful gut-wrenching lyrics, and gritty performance together with a shitstorm of addiction psychology. I'm worn out after listening to it. It is simply top top top notch.
It's relatable for anyone struggling with addiction the self degrading, the cries out to Mother Mary(or Jesus in the studio version) just to give a small hint or sign of their existence, the pleading why can't we just give in, everything about it just screams dealing with adiction

@@rondohunter8966 Yeah, this is really astonishing. As I said in another comment here, my mother was a trained opera singer and vocal coach. She would have gone absolutely insane listening to his voice.
@@JonShade-fy2gm I have nothing but respect for people who can utilize their voice to bring so much pleasure to others. While I cannot speak for your Mother, I do tend to think that people of her stature are in a rarefied atmosphere of distinct beauty.

Maynard was sober AF. He's just being Maynard. He did this perfectly.
@eric8542005 Yeah are we ignoring that there would be irony in singing a song called Sober while pretending to be drunk/high as fuck?

@@gtyplkjh6570
Well hello, Sasha.
We were not ready for this in the 90s
Dose that means you dont have that power to lisent just like me 3/4 years ago i didnt like them now its one of my fav.
We were not ready to be Sober(to be honest..)
Armands Viļums he puts so much emotion into his music he goes into a different state of mind!
maynards a hard worker thats for certain
Agree with you 100%. I have seen Maynard perform 3 times. Once with Tool and twice with APC and this is a man that knows exactly what he’s doing and how he wants to do it. And no matter if he is jerking on stage or look like he is jerking it, it’s done with purpose.
