@@gtyplkjh6570 Well hello, Sasha. The music is....interesting. I need to tell you a little about who I am so you understand my comments. I'm 72 years old, honest. In my younger years, my genre' was bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads. I grew up with some late 50's, and full 60's, 70's, 80's, and some 90's music. The biggest problem for me here is the language barrier, as an American, I don't speak Russian, but overall, my impression of the band is it seems like a fusion of Thrash/Speed Metal and Punk. I was surprised when the guitar started riffing on the high frets, that guy can play guitar. Because of the language, the lyrics came to me as just screaming/yelling, but that's my problem, not the bands. The drummer is consistent, the guitar is discordant but that is style, not poor playing. I LOVE the cello, I played a little in middle school. I love the song 'Rock Superstar' by Cyprus Hill and I think it's bass line is cello. The trumpet is VERY punk, it looks like an old car muffler, it's a very cool homemade instrument. I hobby build electric guitars (they are good guitars, but nowhere near professional level), and play a little. Because of my age, arthritis keeps me from making chord shapes, so I play like Keith Richards, 5 strings (no low E), tuned open G, and one finger barre chords. I can't read music so I just play free flow. What is interesting is that though I was never into speed metal/thrash, what flows out of me naturally is similar to what this guy plays, except I have no speed fingers. If I understand you correctly, you know the guitarist and band. If that's right, tell him 'Greetings!' from an old man in America. Between 2012 and 2020 I worked on the museum ship USS Iowa, and met many guests from around the world, including Russia and it's neighbors. All the Russians I have met have been very nice people and would talk extensively with them when I could.

I think people are mistaken. Maynard isn't as hammered as they say. If you look at him closely, every move he makes is deliberate, thought out, calculated. The look in his eyes, and lyrics delivered on time without mistake. What you're actually seeing is a guy who is at the top level of performing. He's just that good at what he does.
All anyone need do is watch Peter Gabriel perform live with Genesis, specifically the Lamb era. He does very similar stage movements. It's how he tells the story of the song. I imagine that Maynard is probably a fan.
I've watched this video so many times i lost track. This is the most intense performance I've ever seen by a vocalist, the man looks completely possessed by the song. Absolutely wonderful!

I keep coming back here from time to time Maynards artistic expression throughout his body to tell the story and the feeling of this song is like know other😮❤❤❤❤
He's hunched over like quasimodo and almost motionless... Yet he manages to give us all a masterclass on vocal dynamics and commanding an audience. That's impressive.
The first 50 sec of this song is the most haunting and beautiful sound I have heard in a very very long time. This performance is pure art and mesmerizing!!!
@@rondohunter8966 Yeah, this is really astonishing. As I said in another comment here, my mother was a trained opera singer and vocal coach. She would have gone absolutely insane listening to his voice.
@@JonShade-fy2gm I have nothing but respect for people who can utilize their voice to bring so much pleasure to others. While I cannot speak for your Mother, I do tend to think that people of her stature are in a rarefied atmosphere of distinct beauty. Unable to recognize the art of another artist in the same field, perhaps different dimension. The English lady was open enough to recognize this is music, though much different to which she is familiar. But as she listens she learns, and knows.
@@rondohunter8966 I meant insane in the most complimentary way. She would have been absolutely astonished by his voice; it would have taken her breath away. She would have rhapsodized over it. I would give anything to have her come back just to watch the look on her face listening to him.
Malika Thueler he's definitely channelling something for this performance, when he hits the chorus its nothing short of spine chilling. Maynard is an absolute vocal beast, and a one of a kind showman.
Junk Head agreed Maynard's performance of this song ...INTENSE!!! I guess that is why I listen to metal and heavy music in general so many emotions and expressions that just can't be rapped away...or sang with a pleasant melody
I can't believe it's 2023 and I just discovered this legendary song. That performace, the expressions along with his voice and the words..... maaaaaaaaaan! This song is playing in my head for the past 3 days or so. I can't stop hearing it, the performace is outstanding. I never loved pop music after getting into metal, they are all shitty actors with a lot of autotuners. This is real performance coming for the heart, from experience. This is art1
The 90s left a plethora of raw, real music, performances. It was the last era before cameras were shoved in faces at every turn... so there isn't coverage of ALL of it. This just means we mudt appreciate what was left behind all the more. 🥂
Maynard is portraying a character that being crushed by his addiction to substance and/or religion and is ironically using his addiction to soothe the wounds that are consequence of said addiction. Paul, the bass player, is portraying Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys.
i agree that they are completely different, however Maynard did some screams that Freddie can only dream of doing. And i said hes got more range i didn't say his voice is better because that personal preference !
Everyone here talking about Maynard being on drugs, and I still believe he's feeling the music as a whole, and he just gets absorbed by it. That's why you think he's on drugs.
ALl i can think is how much pressure all Maynards bandmates must feel when he's fucking nailing like this. Maynard seems like a dude that would fight you if you hit the wrong note.
It's relatable for anyone struggling with addiction the self degrading, the cries out to Mother Mary(or Jesus in the studio version) just to give a small hint or sign of their existence, the pleading why can't we just give in, everything about it just screams dealing with adiction
90's kid finding out a 90's song about addiction in 2023 while trudging through addiction issues better late than nevver, and it's none other than sober thank god

Honestly, who has the balls to get on stage in front of, possibly, hundreds of drug addicts and stumble around in a pink onsie while singing about addiction? I love how brutally honest tool is.
@@unowhavethebiggay1430 he is completely sober. He is making a point. The way he is standing is mocking heroin users and the pink onsie is to signify a toddler. He is giving the audience the perception of a drug addict trying to get clean. He has big balls to do that in front of potentially hundreds of drug addicts. But he is just trying to give a little light into the issue. Most of his addiction related songs you can pick out lyrics that are sympathetic, so I think he has a pretty good grasp on drug addiction. It can make people the shittiest beings on Earth but it's still sad to see them stumbling around like toddlers unable to get clean again. But he still remains brutally honest in the most creative way possible. It's magnificent.
What makes it even more incredible is that vocal coaches say he shouldn't be able to sing like he did with the dramatic postures he took throughout the performance. Maynard Rules!!!
@@FreedomInc I checked them yesterday after reading your comment. That was an awesome journey, definitely going to do that again. Apparently, he has a third group called "Puscifer", and UA-cam directed me to their song "Vagina Mine". I have mixed feelings about it and still cannot stop playing it in my head. This guy is confusing.
+The Trolliest Troll Whether or not Maynard did drugs before, during, or after Tool shows back then is beyond me, but as far as I know it's just an act to fit the subject matter of the song. He is, after all, singing about substance being used as a device for comfort--from the substance's point of view.
There recording process has a lot to do with that too I would imagine. they don't edit that much with a bunch of effect, sometime they do to have the "album" quality but for the most part Tool is Tool
youre wrong milton. im en audio engineer/producer and im positive without any processing their music would still be popular because its not about the processing in their case. its pure talent tbh
and youre partially right but most bands as famous as tool use incredibly high quality/expensive studios. but even before they didnt their music was still popular or got them popular aka ANEMA the record itself sounded like trash but the idea of it was genius
To me that doesnt even look like a drug induced state. That looks like a man that's just so dedicated to performance and music, and has been putting himself out there, opening his emotions to the world, since the begging of his carreer. Theres plenty of bands you can look up to see how they perform on drugs, and it's a whole different kind of twitching and shriveling. This one looks controlled and completely consistent just with the message of the song.
Agree with you 100%. I have seen Maynard perform 3 times. Once with Tool and twice with APC and this is a man that knows exactly what he’s doing and how he wants to do it. And no matter if he is jerking on stage or look like he is jerking it, it’s done with purpose.
The late 80s / early 90s was an amazing time for pioneering music, imho (Death, Defiance, Atheist, IronChrist, Mr. Bungle, Dream Theater, King Diamond, Tool)

This performance is how Tool will be remembered forever . period

I love that we're all still watching this performance...🤗
They all look grunge to me
Please explain what genre Maynard is emulating

@@pablodmdp yeah because kid rock is a genre of music :l
I think people are mistaken. Maynard isn't as hammered as they say. If you look at him closely, every move he makes is deliberate, thought out, calculated. The look in his eyes, and lyrics delivered on time without mistake.
What you're actually seeing is a guy who is at the top level of performing. He's just that good at what he does.
Nah bro he’s fucking tweakin
All anyone need do is watch Peter Gabriel perform live with Genesis, specifically the Lamb era. He does very similar stage movements. It's how he tells the story of the song. I imagine that Maynard is probably a fan.
Exactly. Peak performance
I wish I could like your comment 1,000 times!
I don't think Maynard is high or drunk
Do u think the people at the show realized what they were witnessing.

That vocal performance is outrageous

I've watched this video so many times i lost track. This is the most intense performance I've ever seen by a vocalist, the man looks completely possessed by the song. Absolutely wonderful!
This is the greatest live performance i ever have seen and heard in my life. The music and lyrics are just amazing. I am 50 years old and have heard music all my life, but this is just something very different, and i mean that in the best way. TOOL is great.
First time I heard it was three months ago crazy
I agree, this is how a front man should be in a group. He elevates everything with his talent.
Maynard was asked if he will ever play Sober again live. He said he preferred to be drunk on stage cause he gets nervous. Lmao
Lol he's a troll love him

Funny joke.
I seriously second that notion. Lol

As a profoundly deaf person, Tool was a band I felt through a sensation of vibration. Whilst using an ordinary hi fi speakers, their music felt like I'm going closer to heaven.

This performance is nothing short of iconic.
It was later reported that Maynards microphone was not turned on for the entire performance.
Mtr Laux underrated comment
It couldn't be. The resulting surge of power would electrify the audience. What you hear is his actual voice. Toned down, muffled for your benefit.

I prefer MJK but Freddie had a wider range.
Everyone here talking about Maynard being on drugs, and I still believe he's feeling the music as a whole, and he just gets absorbed by it. That's why you think he's on drugs.

Maynard is portraying someone who is feeble and weak while struggling with sobriety.
That is a great theory actually i agree with you
I can attest to this..Going through opiate withdrawal recently. 30 days in! This has been my theme song..
It's relatable for anyone struggling with addiction the self degrading, the cries out to Mother Mary(or Jesus in the studio version) just to give a small hint or sign of their existence, the pleading why can't we just give in, everything about it just screams dealing with adiction
Hes also relating to how life is hard and that's why we self medicate
No way.. The why can't we sleep forever is something you only get when you've been addicted

+The Trolliest Troll Whether or not Maynard did drugs before, during, or after Tool shows back then is beyond me, but as far as I know it's just an act to fit the subject matter of the song. Man - some bands suck live/without studio tweaking of voices and the like. This is just awesome.
Hans Lain Maynard does have a very nice and unique voice. The bass player has skill. the others are great as well.
Dylan Fisher what would you say was so "trashy" about that album? what would you say is a much "better" sounding album?
To me that doesnt even look like a drug induced state. That looks like a man that's just so dedicated to performance and music, and has been putting himself out there, opening his emotions to the world, since the begging of his carreer. Theres plenty of bands you can look up to see how they perform on drugs, and it's a whole different kind of twitching and shriveling. This one looks controlled and completely consistent just with the message of the song.
Armands Viļums he puts so much emotion into his music he goes into a different state of mind!
maynards a hard worker thats for certain
Agree with you 100%. I have seen Maynard perform 3 times. Once with Tool and twice with APC and this is a man that knows exactly what he’s doing and how he wants to do it. And no matter if he is jerking on stage or look like he is jerking it, it’s done with purpose.
