    The color issue... I believe that the flat “yellow” look to the 4K is due largely to the speed booster. I’m not saying they are identical without the speed booster but WAY closer. At least the stuff I’ve gotten a chance to see that used both(friends projects) a skin tone test on the 4K with and without speedbooster would be awesome

      @@julianburrus9956 It's workable except for extreme close-up shots where you still need to capture sound. Also, my first copy had a defective fan. I sent it back to the retailer and they sent me a new camera. I don't see it as a complete deal-breaker, I just prefer cameras that shut down their fans while recording. Many of the bigger cinema cameras do this now - shut off or slow down the fan substantially while recording.

    • @Leo9ine
      @Leo9ine 4 роки тому +8

      @@julianburrus9956 I have the 6K and I'm an audio guy at heart. In an average silent-but-untreated room, you need to be inches away to hear the fan (with an ear or a microphone). I could only imagine it being audible in a dead silent treated studio where you're recording macro video with the mic on the camera. Even then, it's a very consistent low frequency and would be easy to filter in post. I worried about the fan noise too, until I actually got it in hand. The fan noise in the video is *severely* boosted, it makes it sound like a vacuum cleaner. In reality it's essentially silent and nowhere near such a high pitch.

    That's interesting. The 4K camera has a Micro Four Thirds sensor just like the regular 1080p BMPCC, and I bought a Metabones Speed Booster 0.58x for that camera about two and a half years ago, so... unless Metabones stopped making that type of speed booster, there are at least three in total: x71, x64 and x58 (which is the fastest).

  • @denny_nguyen
    @denny_nguyen 4 роки тому +27

    There's already a full frame speedbooster for the 6K on the market - LucAdapters magicbooster - also adds a better IR Cut Filter and will have clip ND filters in the future. This makes shooting in 5.7K kind of attractive, because the field of view will still be wide, you can shoot 60fps, record in 3:1 and have a better rolling shutter time.

    • @TrentsMullet
      @TrentsMullet 4 роки тому +2

      Denny could you please elaborate on why you’d shoot 5.7K rather than the full 6K?

    • @denny_nguyen
      @denny_nguyen 4 роки тому +10

      @@TrentsMullet Afaik there is still no card on the market that can shoot 3:1 Raw on 6k with 50fps. However, you can shoot 3:1 and 60 fps on 5.7k with a Samsung T5 (although the data rate shouldn’t be substantially lower, but it seems to be enough). So higher frame rate, better compression rate. When your finished product will be 4k, which it will be in most cases, then 5.7k is still good enough for getting crispy oversampled 4k or doing crop-ins and I bet you won’t be able to tell a difference, if I upscaled to 6k. Also the rolling shutter is reduced from 19,8ms to 16,3 ms and by that pretty much on par with the BMPCC 4k. So what’s there not to like? Maybe that the crop factor increases from 1.558 to 1.692. Well, put the magicbooster behind the lens and you are on 1.2 and gain 1 stop of light.

    • @katlis

      I have a LucAdapters "magic booster" (0.71x focal reducer) for my Pocket 6K. Absolutely love using it with my set of Zeiss ZE primes, and I can unscrew the focal reducer glass by hand whenever I want. By the way, if anyone wants one, Luca is very responsive on Facebook (just search LucAdapters). And I agree, shooting 5.7K is the way to go as it's such a nominal FOV loss with much better rolling shutter.

      Yes it does, to counter that I would get a Zoom H1, H2, H4n, H5 or H6, from the smallest which is easily held in your palm to the biggest H6 which can still be handheld, or a Tascam or a Sony field recorder. Then bring in the good quality sound in post. It's an extra step, and annoying, I know, but that consistency of doing that will build a good habit of always relying on top notch sound for your footage, and rarely using the onboard camera recording unless of course you're recording kids running around, making noise and that will actually cover that annoying camera sound. Most of the time, I prefer using an external mic, it makes a vast difference in sound quality and stereo field.

      @@KingCladCrowe You're so welcome. Awesome of you to have the H1. It records beautifully and it's small, pocket size and super easy, and it delivers good quality audio. I guess these cameras have fans, so of course there's bound to be some noise there. I'm sure though that some of the BMPCC4K's might not have that noise issues, but mine does. The only time I'll happily record straight from camera is if I'm in a noisy atmosphere, and believe it or not, with some good EQ knowledge and a Compressor you can get the camera audio to sound closer to the H1. Anyways, cheers and enjoy the Blackmagic. I absolutely love mine.

      You can get the practice by using a film city follow focus gear. If you are doing filmmaking it will probably come down to how you choose your shots. For example I always put it on a tripod. And handheld will be as less as possible. So I hope you get the gist. If you are not bothered with the learning of filmmaking as a cinematographer I would suggest bmpcc. So boils down to comfort

    As a user of the Pocket 4K for more then half a year: Please don't underestimate the file size, especially in RAW. Don't buy any of these camera's if it's your complete savings account. You really need a more expensive SD card for RAW (At least lexar 1667x, tested on 12:1 60fps 4kDCI) and a lot of (possible expensive) storage if you're going to be shooting on these. And don't forget you probably want a rig, extra batteries, several cards as backup, maybe even a gimbal like ronin-s or zhiyun, a special baseplate for the ronin-s or a cage for the zhiyun crane etc etc etc.
    The total towards shooting what you want is probably going to cost a lot more then you think. Make sure you have more savings to use and/or income.

In opinion, the only reason I would go for the 6k version is to be more flexible when it comes to using vintage lenses (except the Canon FD and Leica R glasses): we all know that lenses are an important factor in filmmaking and if you want to go for lenses for which a quality Speedbooster is not available (for example, Pentax Takumar series) and to have a decent wide-angle glass, the BMPCK 6K is the right choice and I'm very surprised that Metabones in not thinking about a speed booster for M42 lenses.

    Just the video i was looking for very informative. I just have one question about whether having a speed booster on the BMPCC4K affects the image quality and sharpness. I'm considering between the 4k and 6k because they are basically the same price once the 4K is paired with a Metabones adapter. My only concern is about the sharpness on the BMPCC4K after having a speed booster on as there an extra glass element in front of the sensor.
    I was considering the Viltrox adapter.
    Would really appreciate the advice as you have experienced using both cameras. Thank you

    • @kmal16
      @kmal16 2 роки тому +3

      Hello there, the Viltrox adapter is very good, almost on par with the Metabones, up close some differences can be noticed, but that's only after a side by side comparison. Other than that I feel my footage with the 18-35 Sigma (Nikon mount) combined with the Viltrox on the 4k has been more than impressive.
      To get good results I would highly recommend knowing how to expose properly using the false color, this will ensure top quality for your 4k footage. You will have more detail in the shadows and in the highlights. I try to keep my shadows just above the blue, and avoid if I can the dark magenta, unless I don't care about those shadowy parts. Also, for the highlights, I discovered a good trick, I'm not sure if this is consistent across all footage in RAW, but I recently discovered when importing your footage in D. Resolve, within the RAW panel in the Color Tab, don't just click on the Highlight Recovery that won't be enough to recover some highlights, actually use the Exposure slider and bring it down to about .50 to 2.5 (even 3 in some cases) stops down, you'll be impressed at this, then bring back up your exposure in the Gamma wheel inside the Primaries only, you won't need to use the Global Offset in the HDR wheels, just using the Gamma in the Primaries then a bit of Lift and a bit of the Gain will now help you to almost fully recover those highlights. You can also use a bit of Curves but keep it to small gestures, if not you'll risk blowing up your midtones very quickly. Main impressive feature for this to work is the Gamma wheel. Then a bit of the other primary wheels, and a bit of the Offset wheel and then a hair touch of the Curves and also for micro shadow adjustments go to the Log Wheels, and bring the Shadows a hair bit down.
      All of this will ensure an incredible footage all around.
      But please make sure to use False Color on the 4k camera, that is key to all of this.
      Sorry, this has been way more info than you asked but to come back to your concern, yes, the Viltrox works beautifully (so long as it isn't for autofocus which I don't think it would be good for that).
      The Metabones is far too expensive for what it delivers compared to the Viltrox which easily competes on all levels with the Metabones. There's been online comparisons which almost convinced me to get the Metabones, until I went out and shot with the Viltrox, then I was convinced it would be a waste of my $$.
      But all in all, 6k or 4k, I think both will deliver amazing footage. But I will say I notice where the 6k rules, and undeniably I wouldn't hesitate I if I could afford it. The other side of the 6K, is I think you cannot shoot in 4k, I don't know if that was resolved in an update, but it was a big complaint from the PK cinema community, then media storage and recording, you're spending a lot more than the 4k. Is it worth it, yes if your budget can handle buying bigger CF cards and and 2TB ssd's (Sandisk extreme and extreme pro). Also keep in mind, on the 6k because of its global shutter issues, I would use it as a stable camera, with little to no fast side to side movements. So again, would I choose the 6k over the 4k, my answer would be yes, because I'm in love with how the 6k translates skin tones, shadows and color. The 4k comes super close to the 6k, but that extra edge makes the 6k a winner for me. But in post, you can easily rip and tear a well graded 6k footage with a 4k footage if you know what you're doing and everything on camera was well shot. Hands down.
      Thank you for bearing with this essay on my views concerning the 6k and the 4k.

      I've used the 6k before, and while it does get great resolution and picture quality, from my point of view it's not worth it based on all of its cons. If you're more into vintage lenses and cinema, based on this video you're going to be able to get more variety of lens choices with the 4k. The thing I love most about the 6k is its color grading (I can't speak for the 4k since I haven't used it yet). However I absolutely HATE the battery life. You either need the powerbase edge which gives you about 3 hrs. of recording time, or you have to have A/C. Another problem I've run into with the 6k is that unless you significantly downgrade the picture quality, the file sizes are MASSIVE. I shot 5 minutes of footage and it was a 115gb file. That's insane. To be able to complete my project, I had to put the settings on ProRes LT to make the file sizes manageable, and that was about 1gb per minute of footage. With either camera you'll need to invest in a good size external hard drive. Some people really like using higher res cameras and downgrading the footage like he talked about, however the reality is that if you're not actually planning on editing and showing the footage in 6k, it's kind of a waste of money. Technology is just now catching up to be able to handle 4k. And like I said, if you want that vintage cinema feel, I think the lens choices you will have with the 4k cam will give you that ability. That's just my opinion.

      @@alirazastudios4427 I honestly can't say because I have very limited experience with BlackMagic cameras. When I used the 6k, I had it paired with a Sigma Art Lens using the Canon EF mount, both the 18-35mm and the 24-70mm, mainly because that's what was available for me to use. Rokinon has a pretty decent cinema lens kit that gives you 6 prime lenses for $2,500. That would be more than enough to get you started. I would say don't invest in super expensive glass until you really know what you're doing. You can learn how to get great shots with a mid-level lens. If you're on a tight budget, then maybe get one zoom lens and one 50mm prime lens. But if you can afford to get a variety, that will help you get a wider diversity of shots.
