  • The Blackmagic design pocket cinema 4k camera has been one of my go to cameras for a number of years now.
It's a fantastic digital cinema camera, regardless of how cheap it sells for.
The key features of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K are a 4/3 image sensor with 4096 x 2160 resolution and an MFT lens mount, allowing you to capture wide dynamic range, Hollywood quality, digital film images in the palm of your hand! It’s an extremely advanced and affordable high end digital film camera.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a native sensor resolution of 4096 x 2160, while the 6K models have a native resolution of 6144 x 3456. Whether you’re shooting in bright sunlight or in almost no light at all, the 13 stops of dynamic range with dual native ISO up to 25,600 provide stunning low noise images in all lighting conditions.
Multiple Resolutions and Frame Rates. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD up to DCI 4K. You can shoot stills at 8.8 megapixels on the 4K model.
For higher frame rates on the 4K model you can shoot up to 60 fps 4K DCI at 4096 x 2160 and 60 fps in Ultra HD at 3840 x 2160. You can even shoot 120 fps in 1080HD.
Couple with the right accessories this a digital cinema still out performs many other cameras on the market.
So is it still worth buying?
    Absolutely.

Hey dudes, I need to say this up front. I love my Blackmagic design pocket 4k. Yes its a quirky camera, but the images that a pocket 4k can produce are amazing. So much has changed since its release, the biggest being the introduction of BRAW. Blackmagic design RAW is one of the best, most widely adopted RAW formats on the market today. There is so much to like about this camera. Let me know what you like or dislike about the pocket 4k. Super interested to hear all of your thoughts....

      @cinechimp  Рік тому +3

@@carmit.shaham Do you mean buying the pocket 4k as a kit that comes with a lens? Normally new they are not sold with lenses. If buying used, I would bargaining to get a lens with it yes. Otherwise buying blackmagic design pocket cameras is pretty cheap for what you get. I would recommend a lens with stabilisation of you are not intending on using a tripod.
However a great go to fast wide lens for the pocket 4k is the sigma 18-35mm. Its affordable and very sharp. It is not stabilised though. If you tell me more about what you are trying to achieve I can offer better advice.

    • @cinechimp

You dont get a lens with the pocket 4k from Blackmagic Design. So yes you will need to get one - the sigma 18-35 is an affordable, very sharp and clean lens that pairs well with the system

As a proud owner of this camera, I would not recommend you to follow the advice of most UA-camrs and go all out on rigging your camera. Just use it for what it is, learn, have fun, and only expand your gear when it makes sense! I say this from experience as my rig got so out of control, that it stopped me from taking my camera with me. Remember creativity comes from necessity and constraint.

Very well-put (especially the bit at the end!).
I really dig Blackmagic's ethos as a company more than anyone else's, too. The way that Grant Petty (the CEO) does the announcements and demos himself and understands every aspect of the tech, parts, supply chain, colorist needs, codec decompression/workflow is so, so different to most companies, and I really appreciate their frankness in what works great and what corners have to be cut to achieve that price. Hell, I called support because I couldn't get my Røde Wireless Go 2 to get me anything above -30dB no mater what, and the customer service rep told me that the Pocket models just have really weak preamps (he shoots on a Pocket 6K himself), that it's one of the cheaper parts in the camera, and that the lack of signal boost is inherent in the camera hardware and isn't my fault.
Aspects like the above are _so refreshing_ when compared with the ultra-glossy, shareholder-approved, "we've never done anything wrong in our lives" attitudes that pervades the product/tech industry.

Another upside to this great camera, I live in BM’s hometown of Melbourne. I fried the motherboard of the camera (long story but my fault) I took it to their repair shop at 11 am and before the end of that day, it was ready to pick up. An expensive lesson but I can't fault how quick they repaired it.

PS: Yes, the used market prices SHOCKED me. But you are right, prices reflect just how high it is still valued!
PPS: If you want to buy a BMPCC used in Germany, be aware that scammers are flooding Ebay and other online markets with fake listings; At least half of all listings i encountered were fake. Be aware! Scammers know too how high demand still is for BMPCC 4k!

I ordered at launch, and it's still my A cam. The value of Blackmagic's free firmware updates can't be overstated. The best part of this camera is it initially provides a low barrier of entry to shooting professional images and it can continue to grow with you by making incremental rig upgrades over time. I have a few recommendations to add to your great list. The cine-lock version of the Metabones speedbooster designed specifically for this camera is expensive, but will more than double the quality and functionality of this camera. A Portkeys monitor can wirelessly control the camera, which is invaluable if using a shoulder rig. I use and recommend four lenses. First, the Sigma 18-35 1.8. The other three are Canon FD lenses converted to EF by Simmod. The 55mm 1.2, 70-210mm F/4 and 24mm 2.8. Lastly, a wireless follow focus system. Happy shooting!

I was recently looking for a new camera for personal projects and had my eye on the BMPCC6K Pro. I was surprised that the cam hadn't dropped in price during the several years since its launch. Even used models didn't have as big a discount as I expected. I realized that, like the 4K, this really spoke to the kind of value Blackmagic cameras offer. I went back and forth between the BMPCC6K Pro and the Sony FX3. Ultimatly, the 6kPro one out because of the internal ND filters, RAW+ProRes Recording, and the lovely color science. Having owned it now for a little while, I can see why the value hasn't changed in the last few years. There really is no one else offering so many features at so small a price.

If you are not using a speed booster, Loawa has amazing affordable lenses that are optically very good. Then this lens can be kept if you ever move on from the MFT mount. Plus for doco work the speedbooster will come in handy for those lower light situations. Cheaper than this would be a couple of Loawa primes or zooms. Hope this helps you out.

You batteries must be old or non genuine. Try using the newer Canon LPE6N batteries internally, you should get over an hour per battery.
Even our old genuine batteries still get 50mins record time.
If you are actually on a production and not running around with the camera in your hand, use V-lock or mini Vlock battery with your pocket 4k. Then run times for the camera will be several days at a time. For really demanding shoots we us a 230Wh batteries with both our 6k Pro ad 4k, which is no different from any other production camera on the market. In fact this camera with the same Vlock as an Alexa requires only 20% of the batteries for the same shoot day.
But if you are just using the camera to document your life, cars, horse riding and home videos - you would probably be better off with a Canon or a Sony.

If you need AF for video, neither the GH5 or pocket 4k are the right camera for you. You’d be better off with a Canon, Sony and even some of Nikon Z line of cameras.
But these options all vary drastically in price point. So budget is a real concern. @@BerserkFlow In thats case whats your budget?
If you already have a dedicated stills camera, the Nikon, you should go for a dedicated video camera. The AF hierarchy for dedicated video cameras, not hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon, 2) DJI 3) Red 4)Panasonic/Arri/BMD/Zcam/Kinefinity
      and for Hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon 2)Panasonic/Nikon 3)Fujifilm 4)Olympus etc
The best video cameras around 5k USD are Canon c70, Sony FX6 and both will work great straight out of the box.
You also have the Red Komodo or a used Arri Alexa. But both require money spent on accessories to start shooting.
But also dont be afraid to look into the Canon XF range of handy cams. These are excellent cameras, that dont generate a lot of data, have solid AF and work out of the box. They have attached zoom lenses and are pretty good in low light, plus they are SUB 5K new with good audio.

      @cinechimp  Рік тому +1

Hey there, with a small MFT lens it would be great for fat biking and skiing, but you would need to bag the camera as it is not weather sealed.
As far as video quality goes, the pocket 4k smokes a GoPro, but you're not going to get steady shot in camera which is really what you want for action.
If you use a manual focus lens, run the screen brightness on a low setting, the battery will get you about 55 minutes.
As the Pocket uses Canon batteries, they are pretty good in the cold weather. However, to get more run time you can use a Sony NPF 960 with a small cheap adapter then you will get a around 3 hours. This does increase the size of the setup though and how that suits you shooting action sports is the real question.
Im interested to know which way you go....?
