Totally wrong comparison! the Mangusta A129 was created to compete with the Cobra Bell AH-1, a correct comparison in terms of type and size should be made with the new Model Aw249!

I partially agreed with you. A129 was originally designed to be support for the tank divisions that are expected to operate along the Italian east borders, where the tactical environment was totally unbalanced due to the limited number of Italian tanks present in the northeast. The invasion was expected in the Gorizia province, were that Alps crossing easier that in the north side. So the helicopter was supposed to mitigate the situation of inferiority until the arrival of other tanks and troops. For that reason first design of this helicopter doesn’t have capability to perform close support operations, only afterwards important updating added this capability.

The Mangusta is more comparable with a Cobra then with a Apache
The name itself was a reference to the fight for the market. BTW Egypt never got the Aw129: the only other user outside Turkey, which made it's own version, are the Philippines.

The Apache can carry up 16 ATGM while the A129 carries just 8
