What my grades mean:
I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
(Steel Seraph, Titania’s Command, Tyrant of Kher Ridges)
B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
(Disfigure, Horned Stoneseeker, Obstinate Baloth)
C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Blitz Automaton, Unleash Shell, Yotian Medic)
D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Urza’s Rebuff, Terisian Mindbreaker, Swiftgear Drake)
F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (Calamity’s Wake, Fog of War, Painful Quandary)
There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Corrupt, Sibling Rivalry, Blanchwood Armor)
Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher

The thing about this format is the winning strategy is to play fast early game, then just keep playing "win more when you are ahead" cards. Blocking is a disadvantage for once.
Or load up on removal. I draft more removal than any set in recent memory and it works out pretty well for me
I have been having succes with low mana cost high toughness creatures that stall the board. Most people are trying to race and if you successfully stall them, a lot of decks just run out of steam.
I've been having luck when I'm on the play, don't mulligan and don't flood and hit my drops. That's 80% of it. All else is just trying to pick up that extra 15-20%
Hey Nizzahon! If you see this comment, I have an idea for a top ten you might be interested in covering. It's "Top 10 Creature Tokens", basically which tokens have seen the most competitive play (As in, which token cards would competitors need to pack in their decks at pro tours). Is it the classic 1/1 green elf? White human? Perhaps it's those devil tokens from various newer sets? Is it Marit Lage? Or a 2/2 goblin that creates a treasure on the attack just because of one broken saga?! I think it's a cool idea if you're digging it.
That’s an interesting idea. Would the Goblin Shamans from Fable stand up to Seasoned Pyromancer’s 1/1 Elementals? Or every card that’s ever made 1/1 Human or Soldier tokens? 1/1 flying Thopters?

A suggestion for future grade videos: State and visually post your revamped grade at the start of your explanation.
In this video, we get to hear your new grade at the end of a minute-long dialog and then that new grade is posted for a second or a fraction of a second before disappearing and moving on to the next card. I think it would be a more effective formatting.

I made staff of completion work once in a blue/black proliferate deck with multiple of the 2 mana 1/3s that drain every time you proliferate. That was fun, winning with such a terrible card.
These, and the weekly notes, are some of my favorite videos of yours. I definitely feel like I learn the most here as it breaks down how you evaluate cards and a format. It helps that I also have experience with the set by this point, unlike the card reviews.

I think it would be cool compare your grade scores (qualitative data) with a normalized percentile score from 17 lands (quantitative data) as a perhaps more objective way to see how your pre grades line up with what really happens on the battlefield.
I loved playing Urbrask's forge. When it drops early, it needs to be answered. If not, it just flings bigger and bigger ball lightnings. Mix it with any oil counter generation and it's gross af. With some good supporting cards, it can win you the game turn 6 by playing it turn 3. I loved this card in draft.
I liked playing it. I hated playing against it.

The only draft where Magmatic Sprinter worked wonders was when I drafted All Will Be One as well, so it was a constant removal every turn.

Loving this format, chimney rabbles and furnace striders all the way. The red deck does, in fact, win. People really need to start prioritizing some of these red commons, getting them passed to me a worrying amount. Not gonna complain about some free wins tho. On a side note, blue is certainly the weakest color, however it is a bit underrated in my opinion. The 3 mana cat and immobilizer(and to a lesser extent blue skullbomb) are absolutely key to success with blue. Especially with red. Batterfist into the cat into rabble is just absolutely brutal, great tempo deck with the right commons. Dont get me wrong though blue red will often feel more like mono red because of how unplayable so many blue cards are, so it’s best if both red and blue are somewhat open. Also prioritize those terramorphic expanses and dune movers yall, splashing for a removal spell and not just for a bomb is very very real and good would highly recommend. Anyways good luck with drafts to anyone who reads this, may you curve your rabbles into your striders and your batterfists into your furnace punishers, and may the draft gods bless you with a play set of hexgold slashes.
Love listening to your analysis! Would have liked to hear more thoughts on how enjoyable the format was overall - color/archetype balance, luck/swinginess, how would you rank it against other modern limited formats? I know that those things are mentioned across the many draft sessions but it would be nice to put it all together as a way to cap off your coverage of the set.
I was going to do this, but between Shadows Over Innistrad Remastered and March of the Machine, I probably won't have time for a dedicated video.
Expand the Sphere meanwhile does feel very good to play in EDH for strategies which benefit from proliferate. One off proliferate effects just don’t feel good in counter based decks IMO, but proliferate twice is pretty good.
What's the takeaway from the last few sets? Cheap and aggressive cards are usually better than they look. Expensive cards are worse than they used to be.
The Rustvine Cultivator and the Axiom Engraver were largely decent because OIL
Staff of Compleation on turn 3 replaces itself. I remember playing it on turn 3, paying 12 life and drawing an extra card on turns 3, 4, and 5. All for 3 mana!! 3 cards for 3 mana (and a card) seems worth 12 life to me. The other abilities are not as good. Drawing into removal and blockers made me comfortable with winning on 8 life.
Its a bit of a win-more card though. I mean, there have been a lot of games where I had already taken 8 damage by turns 3/4

What i found odd was, skrelvs hive doesnt' give lifelink to a creature that has an ejector equipped but does give lifelink when enchanted with bedrogen communion?
That seems like a bug.
Veil of Assimilation (2:50) should have provided a +1/+1 counter and a vigilance counter in order to make it worthy the cost (both mana and a card)
I wonder how good a card like that would be in constructed, though. That might be an insta-ban for standard
They avoided +1/+1 counters so keeping track of Oil counters was easier, imagine +1/+1 counters with all the proliferation...

I think veil of assimilation is actually pretty nutty. Especially in blue white. It combos really well with the justiciar, chromatic prowler, and charge of the mites. It's super useful both on attack and defense and all your artifact creatures can be like combat tricks. Used it twice in blue white and it was really good in both. Just had a low curve and would hold up charge of the mites as a combat trick for defense and attack.
When it's good it's good and when it's bad it's reeeeeally bad. And unfortunatly it's not good that often.

I’ve had a lot of good luck with Plague Nurse. If your all in on toxic the ability can really threaten the opponent.
The data backs up my assessment that it is one of the worst Green commons. You may have had some anecdotal success, but it is better to steer clear of the nurse.
@@NizzahonMagic Just surprised that’s all. Must of had good luck dodging the hex gold slash. I’d probably still play it in a heavy toxic deck though.
I tried Plague Nurse and just found it too ineffectient at what it did. I ended up making a green/black toxic deck centered around using low-cost spells on Venerated Rotpriests to rack up poison counters. It's an incredibly defensive and often boring deck, but I lack too many of the big green cards to play a mono green alternative and it worked out fairly decently.
Someone beat me with a myr kinsmith deck the other day. I felt very silly.
"A creature that's this inefficient" He says about a 2/2 with a keyword and a positive modal ETB for three mana. Man, power creep has really gotten nuts on low drop creatures. Like that just sounds like an amazing creature to my old brain and it's hard to parse it being so outclassed.

It's funny isn't it? I also had a hard time accepting that for a while during the format. It just comes down to having less than 3 toughness and no evasion being too bad this format at mana value 3.
If you had the play, you most likely won. Fast formats are okay, but not when they're dependent on the "die roll"
The game is fundamentally dependent on the die roll being on the play is significantly higher than a 50/50 to win in every 1v1 format
It's always true but the effect is bigger in fast formats. 17lands has a nice chart of how big the play advantage is vs average number of turns, for each format.
@@gaebril131 it shows ONE as being generally at parity with the majority of sets.
It's the only standard release that goes past 53%. Other fast sets like Khm, Mid, and Vow are at about 52.5%, while Dom and Neo are under 50.5%.
Now granted, the way people talk you'd think the first player advantage was at 80%. So it's a question of what number you think is "significantly higher than a 50/50"
I found that having to mulligan at all also just meant you were predestined to lose from the tempo hit of going down a card. It didn't help that the format was so fast you were incentivized to go lean on lands, but at the same time getting a hand with not enough lands or spells that are too slow is also a death sentence.
I liked the format overall but the swinginess that comes from these factors really bring out the salt from losing a game before it has even begun
Not sure how much this is happening, but cards have been overrated a lot more in the last few sets compared to before. This set/video alone it was 10 overrated vs 6 underrated. I know before it was like 1 or 2 overrated cards. Not sure if its because the formats have been more unpredictable. Nothing against it or anything, nailing grades before even playing them is not easy and these videos are a great resource, plus I don't even play anymore and I still watch all of these. Just wondering if maybe there is a reason for it?
I think it's unavoidable as cards, on average, become stronger and more complicated. In older sets you had a bunch of stuff like "vanilla 2/4 for 4" and nobody's gonna overrate that, but these days every single card has some ability and even uncommons can have 2 or 3, something in the past you would see only on rares, so it's easier to think they're gonna all be strong.
I believe the reason for that is that this format developed a very specific meta that made cards that seemed either good or bad compared to the totality of the set but when put in a meta where the thing that it would be good or bad against isn't being played or when the opposite is the case (a card it is good or bad against is really widespread) it warps the format and ratings made before the meta was set become deprecated.

I honestly don't get why this format was so hated. Like, I do, but also I think limited players are a little too allergic to aggro. A 20 turn "grindy" game imo is just not that fun.
Admittedly the color balance WAS off this set, but a lot of the other complaints just don't ring true for me. I liked it more than brothers war honestly
I agree, the only problem I see with a format this fast is it it makes losing due to being on the play or to getting mana screwed/flooded a lot more common and these are the kinds of losses that just straight up feel bad.
My experience with the format was interesting: I did pretty well at the beginning and then had a really hard time adapting to the meta. After a while though I changed the way I drafted and started winning more again.

Huh. The two limited events I played I went 3-1-1 & 4-0-1 with G/U proliferate. So not sure...
Two events is a very small sample size. Every color pair can win sometimes, but being really focused on Proliferate doesn't turn out well on average.
@@NizzahonMagic I understand that's a small sample size. I wonder since people say it's a bad archetype, other players stay away from it, leaving the cream of the crop in card selection.
If this were true, UG decks would have a pretty high win-rate, but they don't.
I guess you'll have to be more obvious that these ratings are based on limited (draft) gameplay. Proliferate, when built around it, is very strong for constructed standard.

I love and hate this format. The game can be over in 4 turns if you are not on the play and no 2 drop. It's very easy to be without hand in turn 5-6. But the synergy between cards is very high and is very rewarding when your cards work together.
It's understandable to underestimate Rampage 4. It's like indestructible or annihilator 6, just ten times better.
This meme got old fast. Now it's just annoying.

Nobody can get everything right in advance, there are simply too many variables in play for us to know everything in advance.

Ever thought about looking hard into the reasons your personal ratings and his are so different and try to learn something from it instead of thinking you always know best? Also, if you are criticising ratings he posted before the format was a thing, remember that hindsight is 20/20 and there are ratings that would have worked better had the meta been different.
Gleeful Demolition is an A, dude. You're meant to target your own indestructible artifact land with it to gain three 1/1 tokens for a single mana. This inside of a Goblins deck, which is a pretty high tier deck, will give you 2/2 tokes with haste most of the time. But even when it doesn't, getting three 1/1 for a single mana and getting to keep your land due to it being indestructible is CLEARLY A tier.
