This is such a loved part of the Nizza content cycle, I don't think it would be out of place to make a "10 More cards I got wrong" in a couple weeks or a month, once the format has really settled... if there's even room for that in your packed schedule (and if there is in fact 10 more worthy candidates).

    • @stuflames4769

You know, the funny thing about proliferate is that it seems pretty good on the surface, and I was kinda worried about how intensive its getting used in the set, but without +1/+1 counters it's really not that busted. It also doesn't help that the format is just really aggressive.
I had a 0-3 premier draft with a simic deck and I really quickly recognized why I failed to win.

    • @armani722
      @armani722 Рік тому

I feel like proliferate has been pretty good for certain toxic decks tbh, there's just no interaction when you have poison on the OP already. I've had a ton of success with Izzet/Dimir toxic proliferate decks. Those colors just have so many efficient cards that just have proliferate tacked onto them. You just need a way to get the first poison counter and then it's pretty powerful from then on.

Green black proliferate has been killing it in my shop. If you get enough of the black small toxic creatures its super easy to get green to proliferate to get them to lose by poison

Forge IS a permanent board presence. You can think of Forge as a 1/1 that gets +1/+0 every turn, can't block, and is completely unkillable in combat or with creature removal of any kind.

Nizzanotes idea: "The evolution of combat tricks in limited", a look at how combat tricks have improved over time and how the number of playable ones in each set has increased. I'd also be interested to know if there's a strong correlation between the number of playable combat tricks and whether the format is a fast, aggro format.
I know you covered "what makes a combat tricks good" in the past but I hope you see the difference here :)

Huge shout out for this particular content. It's probably been said before, but the fact that someone as deep in limited as you gets stuff wrong is WONDERFUL. Imagine how boring this game would be if you could make purely accurate predictions based on a visual card list alone?

15:49 this card is even good when it is not in your hand or even your deck. Your opponent is so afraid of you getting a 2 for 1 for two mana that you can attack into a bigger board and bluff your toxic creatures through.

Tyranax is the first pick. Maybe I haven’t played as much in this format as you but one 7 drop doesn’t make a deck slow. Including it in your 40 makes your deck so much better. It will single handed Lu win you games. It’s a bomb. You pick tyranax.

Way I look at Urabrask's Forge is that it's a 1/1 trample haste that triggers ETB and enter graveyard effects, which ramps itself up by 1 per turn and is fairly resistant to blocking and removal, and has sick synergy with anything that plays with counter (Which this set has plenty of). As you said, maybe not a bomb, but I rather like it.

I’ve had a lot of success with Veil of Assimilation in R/W aggro too with all the good common and uncommon equipment. It often feels like a 2 drop with “haste” for 1 or 2 power and that ends up netting me 4 or 5 extra power throughout the game. Not bad for 2 mana.

Had a draft with urabrask's forge and it probably won me 3 games. The one time it didn't win when I played it was when my opponent was able to aggro me out before I could develop a board. It still managed to get a good amount of damage in before I lost though.

  • @mikemosz
    @mikemosz Рік тому +1

I've been loving this format, normally I hate fast formats, but here it feels like aggro needs skill in playing, but especially in drafting. Synergy-less aggro doesn't work, you can't just shove the Crawling Chorus in every deck.
One thing I totally misjudged was the taplands that can draw a card. I thought they'd be pretty great but they really slow you down a fair bit when you're trying to curve out. Still run one or two but don't take them highly.

9 times out of 10 you'd be right to underrate 1 drops. There have been one or two examples in each set that are pretty good in one archetype but rarely are you actually drafting a 1 drop highly, it's very rare for a single set to have multiple common one drops that are good, and same goes for uncommon 1 drops.

Viel of assimilation and mandible justicar are nuts together....if you got turn two mandible then turn three viel and incubation sac youre hitting for six vigilance life link and the following turn you can play your hand or start adding to your board via the sac which makes a 3/3 artifact which makes justicar a 4/3 vigilant lifelink which if left unchecked to turn four has given you ten life....the only deck that doesn't care about that line of play is toxic and even then only the heavy toxic decks have been able to come back from that play line....I've drafted this set over 200 times most of them being green white with these cards and I've had a lot luck with them.

Toxic creatures are all dealing regular damage too though, so I'm not sure I'm really buying this point. Magic has generally passed cards like Arena by, slow card advantage engines don't cut it anymore. In this format it's even worst because of its speed, you take a turn off to play this and you will be behind and likely never recover for you card advantage to matter.
It's obviously good if you happen to be playing against a control deck that doesn't really pressure your life total early much, but those decks are so few and far between that I'd never start this in my deck, and never be actively looking to pick it for that reason.

Is it too early to call this draft format terrible? What makes it bad in my eyes?
    1. Ultra aggresive format
    2. Being on the draw almost auto lose
    3. Rare variety is insane, so many 1-card "win the game" , other rares completely useless
    4. No other gameplan but agrro. Like you're forced to play 1 drop 2 drop 3 drop, or you essentially lose the game, ESPECIALLY on the draw
    5. Mechanics are boring.
    6. Blocking is ATROCIOUS!!! Like what is the point? The whole idea of being on the draw and playing behind is that you have that card advantage and you can still block, right? Not in this format. combat tricks draw cards further rewarding the agrro play who played first.
Really this format turned me into "Do i want to win, or do I want to have fun?". Winning is load up on 20x 1-3 drops, couple of combat tricks and couple of removals, curve at average of 2.5 and call it good. That is just an incredible boring format to me. Literally no room for other strategies. You're forced to play low or lose. Really dissapointed that after several years away from magic i come back to this format.. Meh at most.

Overall, agree with your points. Unlucky returning to this format after several years off. As far as "all decks are aggro" formats go, this one seems fine. Synergy is important, so the specific 2 drops that are key vs filler varies between drafts.
"20x 1-3 drops" seems like an inappropriate grouping, 3-drops serve a different purpose than 1-2 drops. Contagious Vorrac is currently the top rated common specifically because it enables the format's less aggressive decks.

My mono green stompy deck can just outrun proliferate decks. While you're fidgeting with counters I'm dropping turn 4 titans of industry.

Nah I disagree, Sinew Dancer is not good even in a white aggro deck. One of the worst white commons imo

I'll use my card "bring democracy", pay a white, a blue and a red and remove every oil counter in the Battlefield.

This format is managing to top kamigawa now dysinstal as worst limited format of the year for me

This has to be among the most awful sets I ever played.

So...do you like the format? Why are you being so coy about it? 😉. I guess you can't talk too much shit in WOTC.

I always do a format review, and have bashed many formats lately. It is a little bit early here, but so far I think it is decent. Not great, not bad.

@@NizzahonMagic That's exactly how I feel about it too. Middle of the road format. Would have liked to see slower decks have more viability
