    It was surprising how fast a format so rich in 7+ CMC cards ended up being.

      The Prototype mechanic and the abundance of powerstone creation may have had a lot to do with that.

      If Limited is your main thing, they don't really drop more sets than they used to. There is just a mountain of supplemental sets every year now too, but I pretty much ignore them.

      @@NizzahonMagic Unless you want to draft those masters sets like dominaria remastered. That format was atrocious for a younger player. So many unplayables and so many bad cards that just lead to vanilla hill giant cruising. (oh and unbelievable bombs like that one assassin that just taps to kill creatures for 3 mana)

    Looking at the cards before hand, I was thinking there just weren't enough ways to make power stones, which ended up being the case. Early on in the format, I tried to make the big bombs work, but yeah, there just weren't enough ways to make power stones.

    my favorite draft this set had 2 hero of the dunes with 3 warlord elites, some selfmill in airlift, and a lot of rebuys like emergency weld, recommission and no one left behind. there was a grindy match i was behind early by like 15 life, but i ended up playing hero of the dunes like 7 times always grabbing a warlords elite as 6-4 for free. lovely set^^

    Great video. Although i have found Fallaji excavation can work sometimes if you have enough early board state to keep up. Obviously it's terrible if you are behind.
    Recently, im finding Green as my favorite color in the set, because its ability to keep up with the aggro and then take over in the mid game.

  • @eduardobarros3986
    @eduardobarros3986 Рік тому +3

    Here's something that's true about every format: the more "worth playing" are the late-game cards, the better the early-game cards become, regardless of actual card quality. If most opponents are derping around with mana rocks to play their bombastic 7+ drop, just curving out with a 2-drop, 3-drop, and 4-drop is going to quickly overwhelm them.

    • @Redpoppy80
      @Redpoppy80 Рік тому

      Too true. If WOTC wants a grindy big body format then they need cheap removal designed to just wiping out cheap creatures in all colors that doesn't work on big bodies and gives you life and preferably another upside on top of that in addition to just not many low cost creatures in the first place. I'm not even sure that would be enough for a big body format to work.

    I actually think of anointer as more of a red/black card since blue was pretty bad. That color pair also has some good ways to draw that fit the game plan. Mutt and Rager fit well in sac, and pump up the anointer enough to recur something you sacrificed

    • @baconsir1159

    I still think green/white mana ramp was a top tier deck that gave me 5 different seven win runs. There is 3 commons that synergies so well. The 2 white drop with powerstone death trigger, green 3 drop that power stone, and that prototype golem that gains you life. Those three give you early board presence, ramp, life gain, and big creatures. Such a good ramp deck that naturally fights off ramp, not to mention that white and green had very good removal

    It's a bummer that Disciples of Gix flopped so hard this format. I think alternative ways to gain card advantage like that instead of drawing are usually interesting.
    Do you think if they pushed the card a bit more as a 5 or 4 mana 4/4 it could have found more success?

  • @LlywellynOBrien
    @LlywellynOBrien Рік тому

    I know that this format is not at all in the same conversation as SNC but the power of aggro was really disappointing to me thematically. In SNC it was a shame that a three colour set up defaulted to two color aggro, similarly the warewolf set last year failed to produce a workable werewolf limited deck. Along the same lines, this set which was set up to feature showdowns between big machines didn't really seem to land. At least one of the start factions ended up being really good.

  • @maxwellbalkema5388

    Junkyard genius really was busted honestly may have given it just an A this format went so wide and would often get boardstally so drawing that in the late game would just make you win similarly in the early game.

      Theros: Beyond Death was very grindy. In fact, 17lands stats even show the winrate slightly below 50% for the player going first! As of more recent formats, DMU and NEO were quite grindy.

    Once again, I do not agree with one of your F rated cards, to me F means absolutely unplayable, and while Fallaji Excavation was awful in many decks, I have played and seen it being played effectively in some decks. I would give it a D- in general and a C- in dedicated decks.
    Similarly, you forgot to mention how Levitating Statue (which you gave to a C) could be extremely good in some decks, sort like the Blastrunner, it could be a B or even a B+ in those decks.
