    Really enjoyed this video. When I was 16 (57 years ago) I retrieved a Remington Rolling block from a neighbors garbage can. The stock and forearm were missing and the bore was gone. It had been a 7x57. An older friend was going off to a trade school to become a gunsmith so I gave it to him to re-barrel as a project. It came back as a 45/70. I had to save up money to purchase a semi-finished stock and forearm but over a period of time, I got it done. Its a joy to shoot and out of respect to it's age I only shoot factory loads or my own light hand loads. I also noticed on your table a Krag rifle. This same friend had two of these. One was a full length rifle and the other was a carbine. However, both were chambered for 6.5x55 . He also had a trapdoor which we both fired many round in. Keep up the videos, Thanks.

      Your right, they were. Another friend inherited a 30/40 Krag. I don't know if it was from his Grand Father of Great Grand father. He fought at San Juan with Roosevelt"s rough riders. It was complete with the bayonet and sling. Really a nice rifle.

    Most people don't know it but the reason why the 45-70 was adopted in 1873 was the Army wanted a cartridge that would stop horse or rider. Remember back then troops were mounted and if you hit the horse the rider was a foot and out of action sort of. Reason why they used the 45 Colt revolver meaning it would stop a horse and rider. The original 45-70 military load was a 405 gr lead bullet with 70 grains of BP at 1200 fps. The Cavalry load was 405 gr bullet with 55 gr of BP in the Carbine. 45 Colt was a 255 gr bullet with 40 gr of BP at 1,000 fps.

      I loaded some balloon head .45 Colts with 40 grs. of 3F and 250 hollow base Winchester bullet in a Ruger SSA 7 1/2" barrel. It got an average of 1100 fps on the chronograph.

  • @tberkoff
    @tberkoff 7 років тому +10

    Hi Hickok, the Springfield Trapdoor and all its iterations were manufactured at the Springfield Arsenal in Massachusetts. Your M1884 was manufactured from 1884 until 1888 when the Army adopted the M1888, the last version of the rifle. The breach block would have been color case hardened and the barrel and receiver were blued.

  • @averageamerican9427

    Every sound this rifle makes is just satisfying as heck. The clicks it makes when reloading, the round being chambered in and out, and the shot itself, woohoo!

  • @Walter-wo5sz
    @Walter-wo5sz 7 років тому +161

    An interesting historical fact is that the Trapdoor was originally referred to as a repeater. Indian tactics were to send in a wave of attackers and when the soldiers pulled their muzzle loaders back to reload the second wave came in for close quarters combat. It was a shock that the new rifles were never pulled back to reload.

    • @tberkoff
      @tberkoff 7 років тому +18

      Huh? This makes no sense. Single shot rifles were never referred to as "repeaters." Not by anyone. The US Army continued to issue the Trapdoor until the Springfield "Krag" rifle replaced it around 1892, but Trapdoors continued to be used by National Guard units through about 1905, including in combat in Cuba, China, and in the Philippines, to name a few places.
      The US Navy adopted the M1885 Remington Lee bolt action rifle (in 45-70 black powder) starting in about 1889 and the M1895 Lee Navy rifle (6mm smokeless) in early 1896. The Remington-Lee rifle was the first bolt action "repeater" adopted by the US military until the Krag was formally adopted in the early 1890s.

    • @Walter-wo5sz
      @Walter-wo5sz 7 років тому +23

      I agree with you but they did refer to it as a repeater. I can see a soldier's point after dealing with a muzzle loader.

    • @tberkoff
      @tberkoff 7 років тому +14

      Armies used this same tactic you describe since before the Revolutionary War and through the Civil War using muzzle loaders. Its called "fire by rank" when the front row fires separate from the rear row (or rank) giving the enemy a double punch. It may sound like rapid fire, but these guns are still single shots. Actually, the command "fire by file" sounds like real rapid fire. True repeating rifles are an entirely different animal. No soldier would ever call his single shot Trapdoor a "repeater" when Indians were armed with REAL repeaters like Winchester lever guns.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 6 років тому +6

      Walter 1408 I'd like to see whatever source you cite that the Springfield was called a 'repeater' by anyone, much less by mystified Indians. Most of the Indian tribes in the US that were equipped to battle professional soldiers favored actual repeaters, such as the Spencer carbine. Remember George Custer? It may not have been his last stand if his men would have been equipped with Spencer Repeaters like the Indians that massacred them instead of those clunky Trapdoor Springfields.

    • @alufimmorah
      @alufimmorah 5 років тому +6

      Custer was also an idiot, so I'm sure he would have managed to lose even if he did have better equipped soldiers.

    This is what I love about watching Hickok's uploads. You can actually see the advent of firearms, from muzzle loaders, to breech loaders, early repeating rifles through to modern fully automatic weapons, from cap and ball to full metal jacket, all explained in a measured no nonsense way. I'd love to take a walk through those woods with a couple of choice weapons and chew the fat a while with him. I think I'd learn so much.

    The 45-70-405 (flat nosed bullet) was the military load for the Trapdoor carbine and contained 56 grains of black powder. The carbine, along with this reduced load, was for the Calvary and was easier to shoot from horseback. The round nosed (government) bullet weighed 500 grains and was propelled by 70 grains of black powder - this was for the Trapdoor rifle. I still shoot these fine guns with their original loads along with my Sharps and Rolling Blocks. They're a lot of fun!

  • @Walter-wo5sz
    @Walter-wo5sz 7 років тому +4

    The nice thing about the 45-70 is that a light load is still a bear killer. I shoot smokeless in mine but I never use jacketed bullets because I've heard they cause a lot of wear to the barrels. Soft steels in the late 1800's. Thanks for the great video.

  • @tccoup355
    @tccoup355 7 років тому +6

    I believe that one of the biggest reasons the army didn't adopt the Winchester 1873 lever action rifle was due to the fact it was chambered in 44-40. The enemy would be able to accurately engage our troops at much further distances.

    I am retired military, U. S. Army. I spent so much time on active duty concerned about what rifles were newer, badder, better … Once I was retired, I wanted something to shoot that was fun without concern for "rounds per minute." I found Springfield Trapdoors fairly quickly. I now have four of them, three replicas and one original. Those rifles are my definition of "fun." I cannot tell you how many rounds I have put down range with them, and I have grown to love them. I look forward to much more range time with them.

    Jacketed bullets are OK to use in Trapdoors very occasionally,but that old barrel steel from the 1873-1894 period of service is a lot softer than the steel alloys used for smokeless designated barrels. The higher friction of jacketed bullets tends to wash out the rifling. That's why you'll hear not to use jacketed ammunition. The chamber pressure of standard velocity factory loads is held to Springfield Trapdoor spec (28,000 psi or lower) so it can be safely fired in antique rifles.

    I can tell you like that trapdoor. I've had one (Sprfld 1873) for a long time, and just now gettin' up the courage to shoot it. It's in near mint condition. No worries about safety (long as I keep my smokeless loads under control). But sure don't want to mar up this beauty. Watching you, I can't wait to take it to the range!

    I got to shoot an officer's model trapdoor a long time ago. It had a shorter barrel and a ladder sight. I remember aiming at a rock across a dry river bed at about 300-400 yards. With the ladder sight the bullet trajectory had quite an arc. I fired and saw no indication of a hit. I lowered the rifle and was about to say I missed when I saw a puff on the rock. Man, that bullet was big, heavy, and slow. I figured just around 800-1000 fps; my friend must have loaded the rounds very conservatively. But that rifle impressed the hell out of me. I always wanted to add one to my collection but never got the chance. What a fun rifle to shoot. Thanks for bringing back that sweet memory.

      I've never liked wearing a watch, even as a teenager. I used to take my watch off the wrist strap and stick it in my pocket. Since mobile phones came along, no need for a watch; the correct time is always right there on your phone.

      Sky McDaniel They don't do anything because they get people to pay every year. If they can preserve the status quo and make money, why do anything? Change will only come when people stop renewing their membership. They are sitting on their thumbs while California and New York slowly make guns illegal, neglecting to help law abiding citizens who need AR 15's to defend themselves and their families in Chicago, and not doing very much to get magazine restrictions or the Hughe's Amendment repealed. Can you think of anything designed to help us recently besides the HPA or SHUSH Act?

      They have this program where they rebuild/build free public ranges with membership money. Twin ponds the local range here in SC got bad with people shooting trash and old tvs etc. NRA came through and promised to doubled the size and add separate pistol/rifle ranges plus a full time range master. I joined when I heard about this program and really liked the idea. NOW given its done yet (taking longer than expected) and havent been to it yet.. but if its no longer free to go there like the twin ponds web sight says Ill be HIGHLY upset. May even pull out from NRA... IF they trying to make money from a once free public range. I get the renovations cost, and the "range master" needs to be paid but thats what I pay for every year in my membership. *****UPDATE**** Checked the range website and people are saying in the reviews the range is MAGNIFICENT still free with target stands and all. The range officer is an absolute pleasure people say. ALTHOUGH its closed on sundays which is fucked cause some people work during the week, and rapid fire isnt allowed, I cant wait to go check it out. The NRA may not be perfect but they did good on this one id say. Delivered on their promise

    I have come across the original load information for the 45 70, it shows loads from the 500 grain bullet to multi round ball loads to shot loads. Be it a load with the 500 grain bullet or the 405 grain hallow base load, it depends on the type of sights on the 45 70. One sight is calibrated for the 500 grain bullet load and the other sight arrangement is calibrated for the 405 grain bullet load for the trapdoor rifle, not the 45 70 carbine which has different load requirements!
