Because you teach; you explain; you’re involved with the music; you’re a joy to listen to. You’re knowledgeable, and share your knowledge in an understandable, “speaking to” (not down to) your audience manner. Wonderful. Just wonderful. Thank you.
I found the constant stopping in videos annoying as well. Then, I realized that they have to stop playing the video periodically. If they don’t, UA-cam can pull the video down for copyright infringement. I still don’t like that people stop the songs but now I understand why it is necessary even if the UA-camr would rather let it play.
David’s story is fascinating. His songs are very emotional and come from his gut. My younger brother does lighting setup for some of his concerts and tells me what an awesome man he is. Enjoy
I can't tell you how many reactions to this song I've waded through to FINALLY hear a reviewer correctly identify the specific quality Disturbed brings to this song as being "gravitas". Draiman's ability to be both warm and sepulchral simultaneously in the early verses, plus the classic metal fry and growl later, lend so much pure emotional mass to already-genius lyrics.

Everything about this song moves me. The visuals, the instruments used, even the play of light upon his face, all tell a story that focuses your attention on the devastating lyrics so brilliantly born of Paul Simon's mind. The true hero of this interpretation, I believe, is David and his incredible vocal talent. He has the voice of an angel and demon contemporaneously. I am truly mesmerised by him. Btw, I heard that he had classical training and it can be heard by his control over his incredible vocal capabilities.
Your analysis of the song turning from a warning to reproach is spot on. I see Simon & Garfunkel's the warning and this version the anger of heeding that warning.
You are so right! Simon and Garfunkel sound like they are wandering through a dream of wishing things would change and Disturbed made this song into a battle cry a call to arms if you will for the world to wake up and do something about it as the signs are all around us if we but look!!!

Yes.. this cover is better then the original. I cried like a baby when I first saw this video. Knowing the meaning behind the song. Makes this version the more believable.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it!! He was trained as a Jewish Cantor, which is very similar to classical training. Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Andreas. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Enough", "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too. They are a "bit" heavier....LOL....
I like you broke down the song. It had a different quality than a lot of other breakdowns I’ve listened to. I particularly like how you pointed out when he was conveying more anger when the song really stepped up a notch. He’s not just angry, he’s angry enough to be committed to forcing a change and being proactive. To transcend the anger and force opportunity and optimism. Great job Andreas.
I absolutely agree with you about the Eva Cassidy Song. It was my favourite cover until I heard this. And I love Eva Cassidy and all her covers. They are exceptional but this covers so much ground. His training and experience gives us what I consider the greatest voice I have heard.. How much we lost when Eva died. Imagine if she had grown older and more experienced. She was beautiful
Covering Simon & Garfunkel helps Grammy-nominated 'Disturbed' vocalist rediscover his cantor's voice and classically trained style. Before David Draiman became famous as the singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed, he trained to be a cantor

I am not familiar with your favorite benchmark cover but this cover of The Sound of Silence is definitely a gold or platinum or whatever precious metal you use as a standard as premium top of the line. Paul Simon even likes this. Disturbed took it and made it their own. It’s had over a billion views so I think that’s definitely a benchmark that won’t be matched anytime soon. The bit about the false vocal fry was the most complicated part with the two parts of the voice being utilized to create that sound. Another vocal coach also noted that is why his face is so intense as his facial muscles are being utilized as well for that and in this particular song adds to the intensity of the song as it fits perfectly with the theme and words. This performance is a true masterpiece on so many levels and resonates with so many people in different and surprising ways. There are hundreds of reaction videos and many are deeply touched on a personal level depending on the events occurring in their lives at the time of the reaction. Hi. Great reaction to such an amazing performance! Incredible cover...one of the best ever! He was actually trained as a cantor when he began. Greetings from London
If you get the chance you must watch the live Conan version Disturbed sound of silence. The video version is amazing but the live version is next level and the fact that David Draiman was sick when he performed it, shows what an amazing singer he truly is.
I would very much like to hear your reaction to their live performance of this song on Conan. Despite being ill that day, David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Paul Simon reached out to the group after the performance to congratulate them as he posted it on his social media, calling it the best cover of any of his songs ever. Conan celebrated the performance last year as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views.
He was also ill during the performance and there was a little bit of autotune put in by the Conan people. He was less than pleased about that. It was unnessasary.
It's incredible, I can follow him as a bass (an octave lower), then, when he gets into his higher register, it even becomes difficult for me to follow... his range is insane.
Please, "Hold on to Memories" live concert video and "A Reason to Fight", also the live concert video. Both are written by them from the heart and shows the love for their fans and the world.
This song blows my mind every time. It's just such a powerful message. Completely agree that Disturbed took a deep and meaningful song with a bit of an up tempo happy sound and gave it a dark and brooding tone that certainly fitted the lyrics better. An amazing performance. As for great covers, check out Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"
@@andreasgrussl I would also definitely recommend it. Trent Reznor (front man and general god of NIN) said, upon seeing/hearing Johnny's cover, that the song was no longer NIN's. That Johnny had made it something far more affecting and emotive. I don't know if you'll be like me when you watch/react to it, but you might want to have a box of tissues nearby. It was, in all the ways that could possibly matter, Johnny saying goodbye to the world. And it shines through in every single note and phrase.
I have seen so many reaction videos to this great song. Yours is one of the best I have heard. You really explain many aspects that I absolutely have now knowledge or understanding about singing. I thoroughly enjoy your analysis and give you much respect for what you put into this. I am definitely subscribing to your Channel and will have to watch more. Good Job! 👍
This is my first time on your channel and I have to say I'm blown away! You are genuinely intelligent and, knowledgeable, as well as informative. You have earned a subscriber sir. Great job really, just great content!! Keep it up!
David wasn’t classically trained in the traditional way. But as a young man was training to be a Cantor as were his father and grandfather. To this day he still trains with a vocal coach. At least this is the understanding that I have. If I have made a mistake, my apologies. I have been a huge fan of Disturbed for many years. When I heard they covered the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song I wasn’t sure what to think/expect. But it blew me away. I like Disturbeds version much better. Such emotion coming through in the vocals and music. David Draiman is absolutely incredible!
A good cover is not one that seeks to repeat the original but makes you look at the work in a different way. Pay attention to the young performer Diana Ankudinova. Her covers take on a new sound in every sense. This is without even mentioning her unique vocal abilities.
Yay! I love when vocal coaches react- and naturally do more than JUST react. Thanks for talking the time to really weigh in and break it down! Can you do some Heilung? "In Maidjan" live from the LIFA concert at castlefest, maybe?
@@andreasgrussl awesome! I hope you enjoy! (Anything live from lifa at castlefest is better to sample ((they use more technique)) than the studio recordings)
This song is all about the great awakening. The first, third and fifth verse is written in the perspective of the unawakened and the second and fourth verse is written in the perspective of the awakened.
Damn, Andreas...new fan here. I've seen scores of reactions to this epic cover but yours is by far the most insightful and informative. As to singers you need to react to, Floor Jansen (of Nightwish) is at the top of my list, closely followed by Morrisette and Sohyang. Subbing for more!
@@andreasgrussl You'll also want to check out Britney Slayes with Unleash the Archers and Vintage Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart if not on your list yet. Cheers!

I never really paid attention to the lyrics in the original..... but oh my... David Draiman demanded me to listen to the lyrics and it's significance. IMO he and Distrubed brings this classic to a new and better level... Brilliant is deffo one of my words as well. And that last part.... ah... chills... so so sooooo GoooD!
A lot of reaction channels just stop the video for copyright’s sake and don’t really add any substance to their reaction. Loved your technicality with this truly amazing rendition.one of my all time favorites. WOW
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video!
If you get the chance you must watch the live Conan version Disturbed sound of silence. The video version is amazing but the live version is next level and the fact that David Draiman was sick when he performed it, shows what an amazing singer he truly is.
Thanks for letting me know. Several people have mentioned the live version, so I will definitely watch it.
Was he sick wow never heard that b4
Yes he was sick. He had a 102 fever but still sounded amazing
Thanks for letting me know. Will take a look at it.
He was also ill during the performance and there was a little bit of autotune put in by the Conan people. He was less than pleased about that. It was unnessasary.
@@jimspetdragons3737 Unfortunately autotune has become the standard in the industry
Disturbed also won a Grammy for Best Live Performance for that. Despite Draiman having a temp of 103° and not having the strength to stand.
And the schematic of the plane came together perfectly into reality and flew with almost zero drag.
lol, nice analogy!
I agree your analysis is phenomenal
Andreas, you sound like a professor I had while in university. I was studying trumpet, but took a voice class as an elective. Good analysis.
Great analysis, good points, thank you.
It's incredible, I can follow him as a bass (an octave lower), then, when he gets into his higher register, it even becomes difficult for me to follow... his range is insane.
I was scared by the intro but you do have good energy and a lot of personality 🤣 great reaction, this is one of my favs
lol, I didn't mean to scare you :-) But I thank you for your kind words and am happy that you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for the song suggestion!
@@MarcusH wow. that sounds heavy
@@andreasgrussl It very much is. But in a very captivating way.
Good Job! 👍
Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing! I really appreciate that you enjoy my content!
This is my first time on your channel and I have to say I'm blown away! You are genuinely intelligent and, knowledgeable, as well as informative. You have earned a subscriber sir. Great job really, just great content!! Keep it up!
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoy my content!
Goosebumbs.
This was awesome watching you react and also teach what is going on. Youre amazing!
Beautifully done sir. Thoughtful and emotional, just right for the song as sung here. Salute!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm happy you liked the video!
Yes he was trained as a cantor.... Phenomenal Voice... Best Cover Ever!!!
A good cover is not one that seeks to repeat the original but makes you look at the work in a different way. Pay attention to the young performer Diana Ankudinova. Her covers take on a new sound in every sense. This is without even mentioning her unique vocal abilities.
1000000%!!!🔥🔥🔥🎤🎤🎤🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶.......Diana-beauty in every minute!!!💖💕💖💕💖💕💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You guys make me curious!
@@andreasgrussl We just love this voice of the warrior angel..=))))))))
@@stasmarine1638 is that her nick name?
Hauntingly Beautiful 💫
Yay! I love when vocal coaches react- and naturally do more than JUST react. Thanks for talking the time to really weigh in and break it down!
Can you do some Heilung? "In Maidjan" live from the LIFA concert at castlefest, maybe?
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. I'll take a look at Heilung.
@@andreasgrussl awesome! I hope you enjoy! (Anything live from lifa at castlefest is better to sample ((they use more technique)) than the studio recordings)
The live versions are amazing
This song is all about the great awakening. The first, third and fifth verse is written in the perspective of the unawakened and the second and fourth verse is written in the perspective of the awakened.
Damn, Andreas...new fan here. I've seen scores of reactions to this epic cover but yours is by far the most insightful and informative. As to singers you need to react to, Floor Jansen (of Nightwish) is at the top of my list, closely followed by Morrisette and Sohyang. Subbing for more!
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video! I have all of the singers you mentioned on my list.
@@andreasgrussl You'll also want to check out Britney Slayes with Unleash the Archers and Vintage Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart if not on your list yet. Cheers!
@@brewswillis9783 Thanks, that sounds like a very interesting combo.
@@andreasgrussl Variety is the spice of life, as you well know! :-)
@@andreasgrussl Another group worth checking out is Dirty Loops, they're a Swedish trio with an excellent lead vocalist whose style is reminiscent of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, which is probably why they're being managed by Quincy Jones. World On Fire is, well, fire. LOL
Oh Wow, a nice reaction. Finally, somebody who knows what he is talking about who doesn't just say "He's got a good voice" Good stuff mate!! 👍
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video!
Unbelievable Greatness!!!!!
Amazing song!
preciosa canso cantada en esta maravillosa veu!!
I agree.
This version are better then the original.
It's simply more interesting....
That's a nice way of saying. It definitely is more interesting!
I think so too
Nice, I like your point of view and your analysis of the reason for what you're saying. And the visuals are bar none the best. Thank you. 😎👍
Love this version
Thank you for your breakdown of the song. It was a delightful experience. Loved hearing what you thought about it.
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
The cover is incredibly well done. One of my favourites.
@@andreasgrussl Yeah, and we're not alone.... looking at the amount of views ;) :P
I didn't even notice the lyrics before either
Yes. A reproach. An admonishment.
I loved hearing an experts evaluation of this beautiful song. I'd love to hear your take on the Bee Gees Too Much Heaven!! Thank you! New sub here!!
A lot of reaction channels just stop the video for copyright’s sake and don’t really add any substance to their reaction. With your reaction, though, I feel like I’m actually _learning_ something… learning why the song is structured the way it is and how/why the artist sings it the way they do.
10/10
My favorite rendition of the song.
Agreed, it's amazing!
Loved your reaction! Could see you really getting into the song!
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
I bet you're a great vocal coach. Good job sir!
Thank you very much!
I loved your reaction and how you explained everything.
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
I don't like constant interruptions but you taght me much by listening to this. thanks.
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video!
From interviews I've watched of David and other sources, he is classically trained and/or trained as a cantor.
Thanks for clarifying!
I have to completely agree with Mike M, I also think a lot of coach reactions fall short in relaying the knowledge. You teach while also giving us your overall feeling. I am new to your channel and thank you for your content. Also, I would like to see your review of Lukas Graham maybe 7 Years or Love Someone, I find his style unique and would like to hear your breakdown.
