As an artist, when I want to depict evil that’s associated with violence, the color combination of black and red comes to mind first. The green and purple color motif is more representative of the greedy/conniving type of evil, and your explanation of bankers/royalty being associated with these two colors makes so much sense.
I dunno, when I think of black + red I tend to think of that as more of the 'edgy/cool' combination. I mean the first two that came to mind was Dracula and Batman Beyond. Death in Puss in Boots also has that color combo as well. Darth Vader also uses it, which again tends to fit into that general theme.
Red and black, as far as I've notice, depicts more edgy self-fulfilling character types like Shadow the Hedgehog, Scarlet Witch, and Batman Beyond's Batman.
The lack of orange in villains is actually pretty simple. It was traditionally a very difficult color to get to stand out in color printing. Red and yellow inks were combined to make the browns that would often color buildings and other backdrops. It made it difficult to produce an orange that would stand out against those backdrops.
What I love about Jack Horner is his general vibe is “I’m bad and I love it”. Also another colour twist can be found in The Owl House: White and Gold are seen as holy colours and are often associated with the church, but Emperor Belos wears these colours for most of the series, and he is no holy man, I mean he has fratricide and attempted genocide on his rap sheet
And then when Emperor Belos is found out, he turned into a sickly green colour. Then near the end, when he envelops Papa Titan, the death mold he spreads is a lighter shade of green. Notice the extreme lack of purple due to him never being true royalty.
Meanwhile Darius is decked out in purple due to Coven Heads being treated as essentially royalty in this world. Willow's green hair fits will with her plant vibes, and Eda's red outfit maps to her wild and passionate nature. Lilith's dyed blue hair fits the calm, stable authority figure she tries to be, but the orange of the Clawthorne's natural hair color betrays her true energetic, adventurous nature underneath.
Emperor Belos uses religion to justify his genocidal plans, so it makes sense that he wears the colors of the church, even in-story. Also this video and comment remind me of Amity changing her hair color.
The radium girls not only worked with the dangerous paint, but we're also encouraged to lick the tips of the paintbrushes to get a fine point. So not only were they in lose contact with radium but they also ingested it.
I think there’s another reason you missed. In old books and comic books the printing method made it so the primary colors look sharp and “stick out”. That’s why they colored most superheroes with those colors, and it stuck. With supervillains they wanted colors that caught the eye more than the brown and gray backgrounds, but less than the super heroes, so they chose secondary colors like purple and green
Something he forgot to put in is that the radium girls weren’t just exposed to radium while painting watches they were told it’s healthy so they would paint they’re nails with it and even eat it
If anyone reading doesn't know about it, it's definitely something they ought to look up. It's horrifying, but it's also something to remember when dealing with employers. The radium girls' employers knew the dangers, protected themselves, and yet told these women to use their tongues to "point" the brush tips for painting. And then denied everything when the women started dying and started asking questions. They even spread lies that it was a disease spread by alleged promiscuity among the women to try to discredit them as they were dying. And then, as it proceeded to court, they closed the company in Illinois where it was being litigated, moved to New York, and reopened it, and lied to a whole new batch of victims. They also made every effort to stall out the litigation INTENTIONALLY so that the victims would die before it was ruled on. And the reason this still matters is companies still do all these things today. I've experienced it multiple times myself and it is very hard as an employee to decide which battles for your health and safety to fight and which ones you just have to accept because we live in a country where worrying about health and safety is labeled "communism".
I do think you've forgotten one Disney villain from this list, and its one of the most modern of them... Tamatoa, from Moana. He's purple all over and quite literally carries his wealth on his sleeve, and his back, and all around him.
I can't believe Matpat mentioned purple and green being complimentary secondary colors for evil and DIDN'T mention Dr. Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb. Everything he owns is purple and green! Literally everything! His houses, his vehicles, his inventions, everything!
At first, you would think Dr. Facilier would be an exception of the royalty rule, he even called himself a “poor sinner” in his first song. But, he also said “y’know, I’m a royal myself, on my mothers side,” at an earlier point in the SAME song
12:53... i nean orange is villainous. Halloween pumkins on headless horsemen, color of pill bottles, prosioner outfits. Villans with orange: Sabertooth, ten eyed man, orange lantern of avarice larfleeze.. ok yeah there's not many examples.
They might not have used orange often on villains because it's really close to heroic colors like red and yellow, so it didn't match the evil, dark feelings villains usually were supposed to give off. Plus, it's harder to make orange darker or lighter in tone, so it was harder to use in many different formats like evil fire, poison, and clothing in this case. I could be wrong though 🤷
That makes sense. Orange is much more similar to red and yellow than green is to blue and yellow or purple is to red and blue. (I'm sure the human eye's affinity to green is likely responsible for that disparity. 🤔)
Fun fact: in film school I was assigned a filmmaking book called "If it's purple, someone's gonna die." It explained why we associate certain colors and even more so shades of those colors with certain feelings and emotions. Violet Purple and Lime are evil colors
@@PhantomGato-v-Have you ever noticed that some Disney villain's have bird side kicks? My purple is my favorite colour, I have pet birds, but I'm not evil, does that mean I'm a villain in Disney's eyes?🤔🤨
I’d love a sequel to this where you go through polls and design history, to determine what would be the most evil/scary/intimidating villain fit ever. And weather we have already seen it or if it’s yet to be shown
0:51 fun fact! the purple minions are well... purple because purple is in the opposite of the color spectrum of yellow which was the original minions color.
I actually knew about the royal purple thing from an article I read in a gaming magazine when I was a kid about why Nintendo made the GameCube purple. Apparently they chose purple because of its status with royalty and nobility. I think the article even went into detail about how purple dyes used to be hard to come by, thus giving purple its illustrious status.
I always love when characters go off the “traditional colors” for their character type. As a professional concept artist, it’s fun to use color in ways that is not traditional.
13:53 Funny enough, his clothes do turn into purple under the light after he has finally kill Murray, indicating that his transformation is finished and he has joined the other Jokers as a "bad guy".
The biggest reason of why orange isn't as prevalent in villain designs is probably due to the fact that there are quite a lot of natural orange things, the sunset, oranges, pumpkins, butterflies, many types of flowers, etc, so it's kinda not as unnatural as the other secondary colours.
@@LemeAndCat it's a bit hard to explain, it's almost like how you can have a white wall or flower and a white light, sure both are white but the light "hurts" your eyes, neon green would be something similar althought I would need a much more detailed explanation to really categorize it
Actually, I believe that another reason why so many comic book villains wore green was because green was the easiest color to print in large bulk. It's why Hulk became the not-so-jolly-green giant.
Correct. He was initially gray but the ink they used for him was becoming too expensive, and because he’s basically just two colors and frequently takes up most of every panel he’s in, they decided to print him in the cheapest colors they had.
To the orange in villains point, something I didn't see addressed in other comments is that it shows up in many of their weapons. Green Goblin and his pumpkin bombs. Joker's joy buzzer is usually either yellow or orange. It's brightness makes the weapon more noticeable against the cooler costume.
Interesting point about the Hulk: when first conceived, not only was he not green skinned (grey but the printer turned him green), but his ripped pants were not purple (they were blue). The first Hulk in green-with-purple-pants was actually a robot built by the government to fight the real Hulk (still with blue pants), keeping with the "Purple = Evil" idea. At some point, Marvel switched him over to the purple pants and kept them to make the character's look consistent.
Im so glad you brought up the HUlk. I love that twist of color on the Hulk. Because from the outside, looking in, Hulk is a monster. If you are just a random citizen and a see a 7 1/2 foot tall, 1,400 lb monster destroying your town, you would 100% think he was the bad guy.
Purple is also used to delineate mystery and mysticism, so of course it ends up in the outfits of a bunch of mages. As mentioned by others, orange is a bright, and by definition warm, color, so largely ill suited to ominous usage, although sometimes you do see it as an accent color.
The mystery aspect is most likely due to the formula for creating tyrian purple being secret. It is like how to produce silk used to a top national secret of China.
I'd like to point out another swap of color in the animation world. In the Owl House, the protagonist, Luz Noceda is usually associated with purple. She's depicted as a weirdo who never had friends in the human realm due to how strange she is. Meanwhile the antagonist, Emperor Belos, is associated with yellow/gold. To the Boiling Isles, Belos is a savior. A kind of God, if you will. Very few actually go against his word. He's seen as a wonderful man to everyone besides Luz and her friends/allies, even the sixteen year old that dug his own grave to avoid going back to the Emperor's Coven empty handed looks up to him.
I was just thinking of that! Amity also gains a major purple theme as the show goes on and the classic purple + black villain pairing gets strongly subverted in the final two episodes
The purple-themed characters in my stories tend to be of a very specific sort: very powerful, in one way or another, amoral, and always motivated by the same thing. They're always out to protect their families (or in one case, avenge them) at ANY cost. At ANY cost. They're not necessarily villains (depends what they need to do to protect their loved ones; they're not shy about becoming villains if they must), but they tend to scare the other characters.
I actually did something similar when writing. I decided to make red and purple the signature colors of the female lead. Meanwhile the most despicable villain is associated with white and blue due to her obsession with purity.
While this is a very fun video essay, this is a very English-speaking-centric take on color. For example, purple is associated with mourning in Brazil and Thailand, not royalty. Colors aren't evenly perceived across languages. Take pink - which isn't a primary or secondary color, but rather light red. This is a color that the English speaking world has exported to other languages. The Japanese word for pink is pinku. Before taking the word from the English language, the closest color they had was peach- colored (momoiru). When linguists went around the wolrd eith paint chips to gather color names in all languages, there are some that only have two as few as color words- and even that is controversial if they actually exist at all. I would love to see if this color theory works for non English speaking films, or what villains wear in those movies and stories.
Very true, however he's using colors in the U.S. I'm aware that black was considered a royal color in some east Asian country, it was rare. White is worn as mourning clothes in some countries.
All the things you mentioned are valid points but the target of this video were English company's all the examples he had given are from shows that generally targeted English speaking costomers . And I want to know , What about Rapunzel is she bad cause she is my favourite princess.
As a artist One of my villains has a purple/ violet dress and purple rose The purple was to simulate the mysterious part of her Is well as the rose It also simulates the royal and depression of the character of what she was doing and what she had done Eg: manipulation And the dress showed royalty is well (Also bc my favourite colour is purple and I wanted a deep colour palette) She had wings and halo Kinda like a crown I also used it to show anger in the character And I also did it not thinking about it so when I think about it I did it because of colour association unknowingly lol Honestly it’s quite interesting.
Mat-Pat wonders why orange isn't used more in villainous characters. Meanwhile, some versions of the Joker include an orange shirt or vest under his jacket. The Goblins from Spider-Man throw orange bombs, and the Hobgoblin especially wears an orange outfit compared to the Green Goblin's purple outfit. It's not nearly as often as purple and green, but orange does make an appearance.
The colors of purple and green also remind me of poison from some games, often saying something of DANGER in gaming at times (for instance, if in a game a room were to be filled with a poison gas, it would usually be shown with a subtle hue change in the air with a purple, green, or rarely a yellow color). I also see green and purple shown in pokemon games for poison types quite often. Something that does make me think of though is... why are stamina potions and the color of stamina in games also green then? is it cause it pops out easier? when and why was green chosen to be the color of stamina in games?
I have always noticed that villians were primarily purple and black, but when they do have accent colors then they are red, lime green and yellow. I'm actually super excited that it's not just something I imagined. 🙃
As someone who absolutely loves designing characters I noticed something. My main character is an outcast with green skin and purple clothes, hidden behind a blue cloak, a calmimg color hiding the more flashy colors. But most of my villains wear or are black(not the race). A color of mystery and fear as well as sadness or dread. I often use red as a secondary color for my villains, a color of blood and danger, an alarming color. Death from puss in boots actually follows this design. His black cloak portrays an aura of mystery, while his piercing red eyes show his danger.
@@dnm3732 I have not posted it anywhere yet. I wish to preserve it so it cannot be plagerised. That way once I get to Hollywood, it will not have been done before. But I am flattered by your interest.
I would just like to point out that all of the villains from Gravity Falls never wear purple. Bill Cypher is the yellow triangle and Gildan Gleeful wears a light blue suit.
@@mackthegreeny1096 Actually I don't think it's an unexpected choice of color as Pacifica is one of the richest girls in their town. Her family's nobility is probably why they dressed up her in purple.
@@Rubbyy28 And my two cents: Mabel specifically calls Pacifica a stereotype. This could be adding another layer onto that idea, being both rich and purple, blonde and one-dimensionally mean(among others), creating very strong _stereotypical_ associations. It's also worth noting in this case then, the series finale where we see her wear Mabel's *brown* "commoner" sweater.
Approaching this from a design standpoint: purple is one of the darkest colors on the color wheel. It's often used as a "substitute" for black, a way to texture characters in a color that's seeable but still "dark"
I'm a designer and color theory is fantastic! Did you know when online shopping for clothes you should print the article of clothing you like? There is a different way our eyes read screens instead of paper. The screen is additive light and expands the color of what you see. Subtractive light works differently and can give you a more clear picture on how your outfit might look. That is if you have a printer with the right CMYK settings!
Actually, orange being left out makes sense. Orange is signified with energy and humor, so putting a character in orange would tend to depict them as more of a humorous joking character. A villain in orange would be a either a trickster and prankster, like Mr. Mxyzptlk, a character whos meant to be very put of touch in a humorous way, like Starfire, or characters that are overall just goofy like Ambush Bug. Its also used well for legacy villains, depiciting a new energy guven to an old character, like the Green Goblin's legacy villain the Hobgoblin.
my theory as an artist is that purple is commonly used as a colour to shade things as its a cool toned dark and is fairly uncommon in character design (or used to be ) and just in general its really nice colour to use in cell shading. so to give the idea of a dark character while still keeping them vibrant they used purple ps you did bring up some nice points too so over all 10/10 love your stuff :)
I absolutely loved watching puss N boots the last wish it’s one of the best films I’ve EVER seen and yeah death is my favourite character but all the villains were awesome and well written (the 3 bears and goldie locks were really fun and enjoyable to listen to)
The colour language is so interesting. Blue's "trusting" nature is the reason why so many banks and businesses have blue in their design. Cadbury has that gold and purple going on because Cadbury wants their chocolate to appear luxurious. Humanitarian aids like the red cross have red because its a symbol of health and blood. Its so fascinating how colours influence our emotions!
Style Theory at first seemed crazy but fun, but every day it makes more and more sense, this channel idea was genius! Everyone wears clothes or looks in some way, if you exist, you have some style even if it is the simplest, and Style Theory just makes sense.
meg from hurcules (worked with hades, makes sense) rapunzel wore purple too, tho seeing that she was raised by a villian i guess it makes sense that she was dressed in purple. the step sisters in cinderella also wore matching dresses in different colors: purple, and green
As an artist this itched my character design brain in a really fun way ❤ loved the video! And its true, purple is a very royal color, and I liked how you pointed out how red was for passionate emotions, because while red is also a common villain color, the villain that's designed w red is usually a more passionate or angry or out there character it seems
I'm gonna have to debunk that "Joker's not in a purple suit because he's not the villain" idea, because the color palette for the suit they chose was actually based off of the Adam West Batman show from back in the 1960s, where the suit was much more magenta than purple, and it was actually Batman TAS that could be attributed to starting the more purple color scheme for the Joker rather than magenta. That being said I like everything else here, lol. Purple is my favorite color, and as an artist/character designer, it's fun playing with its different uses in heroes and villains alike. I didn't actually know about the history of green either, so that's a fun little fact.
To go along with the whole off putting colors, just look at Halloween- its most common color palette is LITERALLY orange, purple, and green. While Halloween is all about dressing up as monsters and unnatural beings. Just thought that was interesting 😊
It worked so well, probably because they knew exactly what they were doing and, as you said, leaned into it on purpose. And combine that with having another set of antagonists, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, who were more complex, nuanced, and ultimately not EVIL, just working against Puss. So it balanced out nicely and ended up being really fun to watch
Makes me think of The Owl House, where the color palette was reversed between the main character (Luz, wearing purple as her primary color) and the antagonist of the show (Belos, using blue magic and having blue eyes as his primary color)!
So what’s with TMNT’s Donatello being green with a purple bandanna? I assume that was just a random color they chose when deciding to move from the all red bandannas of the original comics to giving each turtle their own color, but still. He doesn’t fit the qualities Mat described purple and green characters to portray, so he just stands out
Literally watching this while wearing purple, which is my favorite color to wear, but green is just my favorite color outright. Probably says a lot about my psychology and influences, whether conscious or not, based off everything in this video!
I love this episode. Next month I am teaching my class about character design and how to dress and color the outfits their characters will wear. The class decided to watch Puss in Boots before spring break to get us started on the discussion on characters you like based on personality and one based solely on design. This is going to be a very powerful learning tool to help the students learn that color is not a new thing, how it links back in history, all the way to how we portray it as short hand in visual language. Thank you!
You should talk about the mantis shrimp with your class, hear me out! It’s a colorful, violent little psycho of the sea that can process 12 channels of color. Comparatively to humans who can only process THREE, which are the 3 primary colors. Imagine a color you can’t even imagine because, you physically can’t. Now do that 9 more times, and you’d be on the same level as this shrimp. Like asking a person whose color blind to know what red looks like, it’s impossible. This topic can delve into a deep conversation on the concept of color, the importance of shapes/lines, and how our perception of art is so humanly limited. Imagine how different art, and media in general would be if humans could perceive as many colors as the mantis shrimp? Or, how other creatures, maybe even aliens, would perceive art due to different color perception? It’s a fun topic to talk about amongst artists. 👍
Hey Mat, food theory idea here: If Scooby doo/shaggy had a normal day/human metabolism why can they eat so much? Are they aliens? But hey that’s just a theory, a food theory! Edit: I don’t want to be that annoying person but thank you for all the likes. Mat still probably won’t see it but oh well
In "Scooby-Do and the Monster of Mexico", there is a scene where the gang meets Fred's pen pal, and he mentions to Fred that "It doesn't look like he could eat you out of house and home," to which Fred replies, "He has a high metabolism." So, at leat in that movie, Shaggy has a high metabolism. Though I don't know how high it needs to be for Shaggy to stay skin and bone skinny.
Oddly enough, when talking about colours to evil characters, one of the things that came to mind you didn't mention, was paw patrol. Mayor humdinger and the humdinger family famously wear purple, and as a mayor, he is rich. Similarly sweetie and claw both wear purple, sweetie is a royal pup and claw is a knight (kinda) both positions of power. Even in the new spin off rubble and crew, the antagonistic speedmister, wears purple.
Its interesting to apply this to a character like Rapunzel who wears purple at the beginning of the film despite being a very positive character from the start. You could interpret that as a symbol of the evil person that she was raised by and the power Mother Gothel has over her for the majority of the film.
I think that's more to fit with her status as the lost princess, purple being not only a royal color, but specifically a big color of the kingdom itself, including being the color of their flag, purple with a yellow sun.
In 'Yu-Gi-Oh', Atem (main character and protag) wears purple throughout his whole series (he also has purple eyes.). Something else to note, the (quote on quote) 'villain' of the series, Bakura, wears mostly primary colors (blue and white). However, by the end of the series, Atem wears a purple cape, signifying his evil past is behind him. Just a little thing I noticed.
I really liked this theory! Especially the part where you showcased how Ariel and Aladdin change their colors throughout the movies. I never picked up on it, but that's super interesting! I feel like I'm going to start paying extra attention to all the colors in movies/shows from now on. 😂
Hmmm, issue with this is that purple does go with yellow, and it can also go with blue or red, it just depends on what kind of setup you're going for. One thing to remember, if they are on the opposite side of the color wheel, they are called complimentary colors, with the best of the bunch in my opinion being the purple and yellow combo. And in the end, they are both in certain color palettes together.
Things I'm surprised you didn't bring up: 1. Knowing that purple was a royal color (while, yes a villain who is royalty would have purple), a villain who craved power would dress in purple to show he covets the position that purple usually gives. Like a man calling himself a king, whether he is one or not. 2. Purple was a royal color long before the Roman Empire. In Mordecai was dressed in purple in Esther 8:15 to signify that he was favored by the Babylonian king. And Jesus was dressed in purple in Mark 15:17, because the executioners mocked him as "King of the Jews." (Although, this is the Roman Empire, but it's important.) So far as linking Jesus to green and purple - because I must uphold my reputation for linking the bible to video games - Christ had a green garment in Revelation. With that said, a nickname of his was "Prince of Peace." Also, he called himself "Alpha and Omega" which also is translated as "Genesis and Apocalypse." And two of the most powerful weapons in Maximo and Jak 3 are: Armageddon and Peacemaker. Both are purple. Am I saying these weapons represent Jesus Christ? Yes.
What I learnt in school was that Red GREEN and Blue were primary colors but dude's straight up taking a secondary color (yellow) and saying it is a primary color
Idk if this makes sense, but I think it would be really cool to do a video discussing straight vs wavy vs curly vs coily hair and the products/history/etc. of them. As a curly haired girl, I’d love to learn more about the various hair types!
There was also a theory that in video games purple is just a convenient color to use for evil corruption that stands out against the other colors in use for health bars, potions, poisons, etc. Which, I guess just goes right back to everything in this video anyway.
This is also the reason why country flags don’t have purple in it was far to expensive and hard to get. 3:50 Plus like Mat said purple had to do with being rich and having a monarchy, countries did not want to add purple in their flag due to this being a “unnecessary symbol/color”. 5:09
@@LukeMaps They might have been referring to historical flags that represent countries throughout the years due to the fact (as discussed) Purple was expensive, but as we now have synthetic purple dyes it is accessible as very few countries have purple incorporated into their flags.
I think Mat forgets the fact that green is often contextualized as envy too. So of you combine the colors of purple and green with purple representing wealth you can see it as being envious of wealth or being greedy as they already have wealth but they want more.
I just realized I’m definitely a villain by color. I’ve always avoided primary colors, and stuck to secondary colors. I love green and purple/violet together, that’s my favorite colors, with some sort of blue-green color too, so a mix of the three of them. I wonder if that’s why I always like the villains most 😂 I mean, I already knew I loved “villain colors” but this made me realize it in a different way
One of the few Disney characters whose magical powers are based off a lime green but isn't evil is Bruno from Encanto. But, like the person talking about Luz and Belos down there, Bruno was seen as evil by the village, making his color scheme a sensible idea.
Interestingly enough, there is a brazilian indie comic about a half-human, half-unicorn superhero. His outfit is pink and purple. According to the comic's creator, not many superheroes wear pink, and purple is usually worn by villains. So he made his suit pink and purple to break stereotypes, since the comic is superhero deconstruction.
Was pretty funny to hear about color theory. Reminded me how all houses in the Harry Potter series are all primary colors while slytherin is the only one being in a secondary color
Blue and white together fall into a message of cold intelligence, fitting Taskmaster well. His ability to memorize and replicate any fitting style, as well as his status as both a mercenary, and an instructor at his own villainy school, show this off incredibly well. It's also worth noting thst early iterations of his costume also had orange as a primary color, showing off his his energy skills and fighting.
The Indigo Lanterns from DC Comics (because it would be silly to call them Purple Lanterns) are supposed to represent “compassion”, much like the Green Lanterns represent willpower and Sinestro’s Yellow Lanterns represent fear. But the Indigo Lanterns use their power to forcefully indoctrinate their ‘compassion’ and their other beliefs into others. So… make of that what you will.
Also in an RGB color wheel Purple and Green are complimentary colors. As an Artist I usually think of Complimentary colors as a way to create or show tension or drama in a way because they so opposing, similarly to Triangles in shape language I suppose. So It might be that too. Also I notice that if its not Purple and Green together its usually Purple and Teal.
Honestly purple is pretty much the "evil color" in a lot of media, being often used to represent Corruption, Darkness (if its not outright black) or poison (if poison isn't green). I've heard that this might be due to purple being very rare in nature, like sure there are a few purple flowers, but not much else in nature is purple, thus it has a more unnatural feeling to it than other colors.
I like to view that red meant "Controller" while clothes that have white AND red are the ones being "controlled". While red and black meant a backstabber of either group. And Black, Blue and white meant "Blind".
8:25 One of my villains has a brown and green colour scheme💀 Green = irony. Because the villain wears green for a colour scheme, most tend to picture her as a "Lively and sweet woman". Anything/anyone ironic (for me) has at least a green accessory or some green clothes. They are also deemed as 'useless' characters😐. The irony comes from how 'useless' the characters are. All of my characters that have at least a green piece of clothing, are useful. Sometimes even the mastermind. Anyone wearing a lighter version of green means subordinate. The darker version means 'Reality'.
As an artist, when I want to depict evil that’s associated with violence, the color combination of black and red comes to mind first. The green and purple color motif is more representative of the greedy/conniving type of evil, and your explanation of bankers/royalty being associated with these two colors makes so much sense.
i was going to comment this exact thing. black and red are so incredibly strong when put together.
Jeez i need to rebrand. Is purple this bad?
You can make an evil mastermind in greens and purples and give them a second-in-command that is black and red.
It made it difficult to produce an orange that would stand out against those backdrops.
exactly. its also why the hulk was turned into green and purple was because of printing problems
And if we go the emotional route; orange was used to for bravery, honesty, and trustworthiness!

I think it was also standard practice to lick the tips of their brushes so they’d get cleaner lines
The Radium Girls is one of those subjects that gets more disturbing the more you learn about it.
Paint they are nails with it
If anyone reading doesn't know about it, it's definitely something they ought to look up.

12:53... i nean orange is villainous. Halloween pumkins on headless horsemen, color of pill bottles, prosioner outfits.
Villans with orange:
Sabertooth, ten eyed man, orange lantern of avarice larfleeze.. ok yeah there's not many examples.

The biggest reason of why orange isn't as prevalent in villain designs is probably due to the fact that there are quite a lot of natural orange things, the sunset, oranges, pumpkins, butterflies, many types of flowers, etc, so it's kinda not as unnatural as the other secondary colours.
green?

Actually, I believe that another reason why so many comic book villains wore green was because green was the easiest color to print in large bulk. It's why Hulk became the not-so-jolly-green giant.
Correct. He was initially gray but the ink they used for him was becoming too expensive, and because he’s basically just two colors and frequently takes up most of every panel he’s in, they decided to print him in the cheapest colors they had.
and the bulk is the inbred cousin
12:00 isn't red also associated with fire, evil, blood, hell, the devil?
Talking Ben yes sound effect
Purple is also used to delineate mystery and mysticism, so of course it ends up in the outfits of a bunch of mages.
As mentioned by others, orange is a bright, and by definition warm, color, so largely ill suited to ominous usage, although sometimes you do see it as an accent color.
The mystery aspect is most likely due to the formula for creating tyrian purple being secret. It is like how to produce silk used to a top national secret of China.

Dr. Eggman: *Hold my animal robotization machine.*
I miss this show already :'(
*le Mickey mouse cancel jumpscare*
True, in some Asian cultures, red is actually seen as a lucky color that helps ward off evil.
Very true, however he's using colors in the U.S. I'm aware that black was considered a royal color in some east Asian country, it was rare. White is worn as mourning clothes in some countries.
It is also a mourning colour in christianity (at least in orthodox )
All the things you mentioned are valid points but the target of this video were English company's all the examples he had given are from shows that generally targeted English speaking costomers . And I want to know , What about Rapunzel is she bad cause she is my favourite princess.
Pink is more often used to refer to a light shade of Magenta. Light red looks like a faded red playground slide

Green works for stamina because it is also associated with vitality since healthy plants are normally green.

Everyone wears clothes or looks in some way, if you exist, you have some style even if it is the simplest, and Style Theory just makes sense.
meg from hurcules (worked with hades, makes sense)
rapunzel wore purple too, tho seeing that she was raised by a villian i guess it makes sense that she was dressed in purple.
the step sisters in cinderella also wore matching dresses in different colors: purple, and green

Now do that 9 more times, and you’d be on the same level as this shrimp. Like asking a person whose color blind to know what red looks like, it’s impossible. Imagine how different art, and media in general would be if humans could perceive as many colors as the mantis shrimp? Or, how other creatures, maybe even aliens, would perceive art due to different color perception? It’s a fun topic to talk about amongst artists. 👍

@@chazzywaz The first one is blue. But where the heck do you see purple in the green red and yellow flag? 💀
There are purple flags but only a little bit Because it’s rare :D

Green is complimentary with magenta on the light colour wheel.
We also often associate green with jealousy, which makes sense that it would end up being a villain color.
We need an episode on how Barney is secretly evil now
Perfect film theory after this one
I didn't think it was a secret
Things I'm surprised you didn't bring up:
And Jesus was dressed in purple in Mark 15:17, because the executioners mocked him as "King of the Jews." (Although, this is the Roman Empire, but it's important.)
So far as linking Jesus to green and purple - because I must uphold my reputation for linking the bible to video games - Christ had a green garment in Revelation. Yes.
What a convoluted idea. I like it.
I was just about to say that if William didn't show up in the first minute of the theory, I would be done
This is also the reason why country flags don’t have purple in it was far to expensive and hard to get.

Plus like Mat said purple had to do with being rich and having a monarchy, countries did not want to add purple in their flag due to this being a “unnecessary symbol/color”.
5:09
Connecticut has a little purple in their flag, though of course, CT is much newer.
@@LukeMaps They might have been referring to historical flags that represent countries throughout the years due to the fact (as discussed) Purple was expensive, but as we now have synthetic purple dyes it is accessible as very few countries have purple incorporated into their flags.
@@moonwalkerangel7008 Exactly that!
I think Mat forgets the fact that green is often contextualized as envy too.
So of you combine the colors of purple and green with purple representing wealth you can see it as being envious of wealth or being greedy as they already have wealth but they want more.
It blows my mind that green can have both positive and negative meanings.
@@JamesDavy2009 every color has that tho
I'm starting to understand why I love the black, green, and purple color palette so much... 🤔

And at 0:56 he left lol 😂
Ahh
Was pretty funny to hear about color theory. Reminded me how all houses in the Harry Potter series are all primary colors while slytherin is the only one being in a secondary color
Green is a scientific primary color
I would actually like to know more about colors and emotions from MatPat. He makes something as simple as colors so enticing to know more.
10:32 Bright colors like green and yellow are often found on poisonous animals. It probably has more to do with how we evolved than toxic dyes
Yeah
Love to hear a breakdown of the baddies who break odd color trends now (ie task masters white and blue)
Oh that would be great!
7:55 Barney is evil confirmed
14:13 Actually the Hulk is green because the original grey coloring wasn't printing correctly, but the heads of Marvel decided they liked green better
Yeah
He has said this b4 he knows but it still had purple
Orange is so underrated tbh 12:36
Yeah
I wanna see matpat talk about edna mode's superhero suits

Fun fact: Baby says this cuz in terms of history, purple is a rich-person thing, and only the wealthy could afford it
The Indigo Lanterns from DC Comics (because it would be silly to call them Purple Lanterns) are supposed to represent “compassion”, much like the Green Lanterns represent willpower and Sinestro’s Yellow Lanterns represent fear.
Actually, this is great! I’m loving this as a character artist! Please keep talking color and character style/design!!!

One of my villains has a brown and green colour scheme💀
Green = irony.
Can we please talk about how stunning Jack looked in the thumbnail 😂
Giving Zoolander realness 😎
