As an artist, I think I can add another layer to this. When a face has perfect vertical symmetry, we don't register it as a real face because real faces just aren't that perfectly symetrical. Because of this, they can fall into the uncanny valley. They make you uncomfortable. When I draw a person in front-facing perspective, I'll use the symmetry tool but I'll always go back in and liquify or redraw some of the features to break the symmetry and make them less creepy and lifeless. The uncanny valley plays a huge part in this because our brains register symetrical faces as unnaturally perfect. Plus, asymetry can make things more interesting and therefor more memorable. I'm no scientist or mathematician though, so take this with a grain of salt. (Side note- I already love this new channel. It's a really creative and cool idea)
100% CORRECT! I can't agree with this strongly enough! Perfectly symmetrical faces actually give me minor anxiety feelings, especially faces I'm normally familiar with (Perfect Sym-Matpat is a PERFECT example..*shudders*). And i get chills looking at them. The Uncanny Valley trope sums the experience up in totality.
I actually believe the reason the Team Theorist faces ranked so highly overall is because we are used to these faces, honestly an interesting result that could make for a great episode to talk about seeing something more often improving it’s look
That too. But I also think it's personality. We like them. We're not only used to them, but they're not generic stock images with no personality. We find them funny, witty, etc. Objective looks can be skewed by knowing someone is a total douche or super funny.
Very perceptive. I've taken to calling this the reverse halo effect--studies have shown that familiarity with a face does increase its attractiveness (unless it's the guy who destroyed your village or something.)
@@squishyduck8059 I mean looks are subjective anyway. On the evaluations I put MatPat as the most attractive male on the test. Followed by Tom. But I put Steph and Amy ahead of them objectively because I think they’re more attractive.
I watched this last night and it made me feel more confident. I was hanging out with my friend today and she started using the filter and was upset her face was not symmetrical. I showed her this video and she said she felt better about how she looked. MatPat out here single handed increasing the confidence of teenage girls 👏
I agree, the perfect person through my eyes is someone with alot of confidence. And MatPat is single handedly making the confidence of anyone increase by a lot.
A Color wheel is literally my best friend, you can do complementaries or triangles or “neighbors” (colors that touch each other) I definitely recommend using one
For what it's worth this is largely solvable in my experience by using color theory, on which there are of course a number of great videos by professional artists. Essentially colors work well not just in direct contrast (red + green), but in more extensive but related groups of contrast (red + yellow-green & cyan or red & yellow + cyan & indigo); in this though you should factor value (lightness-darkness) and saturation (how "diluted" a color is) not just hue.
Would recommend learning about colour theory and use a colour wheel for that. Example, complementary colours are opposite of each other on the colour wheel. Which is what makes them match each other by balancing out light and dark. This is the most known and easiest one to learn about since all you do is look at a colour wheel. Thats my advice for you
I remember doing this survey! There were definitely a few pictures that set off my “uncanny valley” alarm and I surmised that they had been digitally altered. So in my case, natural asymmetry is more attractive than artificial symmetry.
this is exactly what i put in my note on the survey! it was far too easy to tell which were altered photos, and artificially symmetrical faces fell into a light uncanny valley.
It's a very poor way of doing the study. If you measure how symmetrical the faces are and then check whether more symmetrical gets higher scores instead of making unnatural faces you'd have a waaaay better measurement.
Yeah, perfectly symmetrical faces tend to be very uncanny. I’m an illustrator and I actually take advantage of that when drawing someone I’m trying to make creepy or uncanny, I perfectly mirror their face and give them unnaturally exaggerated facial features.
Learning that Mark doesn't pass the test is definitely a confidence booster. If the sexiest man on the Internet doesn't pass then maybe these tests aren't so important after all.
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable. -Socrates
One more thing , since the faces were flipped in Photoshop , it also flipped the lighting, causing the uncanny valley effect in there , wonder how it'd go if the lighting was fixed as it was in the original
Which is why I feel like this was a really bad experiment to test this theory out. It would've been much better to just Google symmetrical faces, but now the faces they offer us to rate don't even look human to us.
I was thinking the same. A flipped uncanny valley photo is very different from an actual symmetrical face. Plus even on a naturally symmetrical face, there are tiny differences between the two sides that tell us the person is human, on a flipped photo everything is 100% same and therefore scary
I love how everyone taking the survey ranked Team Theorist high. Even though we are all strangers, how much we have seen everyone's face make the Team feel more familiar, almost like friends. No one is going to call their friend unattractive to their face.
I think authentic, friendly expressions is also a big deal on how they were rated. But that's harder to analyze, other than micro expression matching macro expression.
As soon as I saw the official name announcement for this channel, it all started to make sense. The Theory Team has been putting a lot of love and thought into their Clothing Merchandise for years. I truly hope this channel grows and produces excellent content like all the others!
If you ever get the chance to revisit this concept, you should include naturally symmetrical faces to the survey, and for the Photoshop faces work on the shading and eye direction, many of those faces hit the uncanny valley because you can tell they've been digitally altered, either by the shadows not working the way shadows normally work or the eyes no longer looking in the same direction, or both. This can definitely be expanded upon to make a serious, potentially publishable, bit of research.
Exactly what I was thinking they’re soo perfect they cross the line that it ruins the results. The faces look off and even if you can’t tell they’re photoshopped which would ruin the results they’re a little unsettling. Definitely hitting that uncanny valley. Where as someone with almost perfect symmetry but not perfect might score better.
Yeah, that’s why i came to comment too. Unnatural lighting creates an eerie effect and can actually make you look cross-eyed. The photoshop-flipped faces look kinda creepy for that reason.
If you're going to do a sequel to this, I would love to see you analyse the different beauty standards in different cultures (eg. Eastern beauty standards vs Western beauty standards)
In art, asymmetry is often a desired trait, as long as it's with purpose. If you have a symmetrical piece, it's boring, it's simple, it's quick to analyze and quick to throw into the bin. However, asymmetrical pieces leave you thinking, they cause your brain to go into overdrive as your eyes wander the entire canvas. Why? Because like Aerosmith, you "don't wanna miss a thing." You check every Tom Nook and cranny and try to understand everything about it. It's like a scavenger hunt or a "Where's Waldo?" In some cases, you find yourself asking "why?" and in others, like certain precarious sculptures, you ask yourself "how?" It's like Matt's older FNAF videos mention. You keep going back looking for more, but when you figure out all of the answers, your brain discards it as no longer necessary. It's complete, it's finished, but by not answering every question, it stays in the back of your mind. That's why pieces like "Mona Lisa" are so memorable, not because of the portrait itself, but because of the mysteries surrounding it. Seriously, in reading the name "Mona Lisa," you can't tell me a silhouette of the painting didn't just pop up in your mind... Right? Only me? Well, I'm weird.
i also think part of the issue with just flipping the face is the lighting. with a lot of the natural photos, half the face was in shadow, so removing that made it look unnatural (not to mention the eyes not looking in the same direction)
I would like to point out that the title of this channel is "Style Theorists" meaning that it doesn't only have to be about clothing... it could be about architecture, it could be about how someone writes, it could be about practically anything... in other words... whether realizing it or not, MatPat made a way for him to keep this channel alive even when he runs out of ideas involving clothing
I remember taking that survey! I could tell that some of them seemed "unnatural" or edited, though I wasn't sure on how. But there was a real uncanny valley feeling to some of them. But some seemed more attractive because they seemed to have more personality or seemed friendlier. And some seemed unnerving because they smiled with too much teeth. A LOT of it is gonna come down to subjective bias, once you toss out what you're told attractive looks like.
I'm pretty sure i wrote that in my final note actually! I could tell they were edited and something was unnatural or off, i couldn't tell all of them were made to be symmetrical though.
@@maysar4159 I could tell that they were mirrored cause I have messed around with that feature a lot with faces, but I assumed it was gonna be a Mandela Catalhoue thing
Part of it is that the shadows and highlights being mirrored throws off our brain because we naturally are aware of where a light source is shining from when looking at an image based on these things
I always found the idea that symetry as beauty to be odd, considering things like beauty marks are often considered attractive, and many of the best fashion outfits are intentionally not symetrical. I've always found style and faces with less symetry to be more attractive, because they are more interesting to look at.
I wouldn't say perfect symmetry is beautiful, but a tendency towards symmetry. The same principle is applied in design because symmetry is the easiest way to achieve visual balance. Asymmetrical fashion, like you mentioned, draws our attention because it looks different. My guess is there's still balance achieved through the weight of colors and shapes, but I'm no fashionista.
I really hope this channel actually gives us fashion tips like for example how to chose colors to project yourself a certain way or how how hygiene and smells affect people's perception of you, maybe even identifying a style and breaking down their components to make sense of it!
Oooooo I really want to see a color video like the whole winter summer spring colors look better w certain skin tones, if it’s true or not bc it seems pretty subjective to me, would love to see the science
The biggest problem with that symmetrical face flip filter is that the shadows on the face aren't corrected and make it feel artificial and enters uncanny valley territory.
exactly! since shadows weren't corrected the face seems 'flat' This is exactly why photographs are generally placing a highlight to one side of the face (except for pass photos)
To be fair, the perfectly symmetrical faces kinda activated my fight or flight response for some reason. Something in the eyes and perfect smile made it seem like a skin walker who studied how to be a human and was trying it out.
I personally feel like it might be a sort of- Self preservation response Same reason why humanoids scare us instinctually. There mustve been something with a face that was... Too perfect...
For our first creepier, disturbing Fashion Theory (You know they'll come) can we get a Theory on the Uncanny Valley and why ancient humans would develop the idea that perfectly symetrical, beautiful faces are wrong and uncomfortable?
That's not quite what the uncanny valley is. The uncanny valley is an instinctual thing where we think something looks wrong when it looks almost human, but is just slightly off, something is wrong and we don't like it. Whatever looks almost human has a flawed version of what humans look like.
Like the other commenter said, that's not quite what the uncanny valley is. As for why humans developed the reaction, though, the most believable theory I've seen is simple: We had to learn to instinctively avoid dead bodies because of things like sickness and such
I think it would be cool to hear MatPat break down the arguments for School Uniforms vs. the right for students to choose what they wear to school! I am super excited to see what this new channel brings!!
The problem with the test you guys did with the faces is that lighting wasn't taken into account. I think the inaccurate lighting on the left and right sides of the face meant it triggered those "wait something isn't right" senses in our head and chucked most of them into uncanny valley territory. Would have loved for you guys to have had some other symmetrical faces as a third reference point
Also, the guy who ranked the lowest was angled slightly to the left, and when he measured his own chin his mouth was slightly open. I'm not sure how much these affected the results but, it seems sloppy to let those obvious controls go.
EXACTLY! I commented the same. It super broke their survey, in my opinion. I’m willing to bet the results would be different if they made both faces look natural due to things like lighting.
Yeah. It change all the dynamic side lighting into front lighting. You know, the thing the DMV uses to make everyone hate there driver's license photo.
In high school art (years ago) I chose to do a self-portrait every year. My teacher had said 'the brain thinks symmetry is beautiful including in faces. and it messed with me each year. but in the following years, I tried to do one 'correcting' my face and hated it lol. I think that was actually when I started to like how I look
I'd also be curious to see how lighting affects this-- something that I noticed about flipped photos is they dont show angular light the same way unedited photos do, which could be increasing the uncanny valley.
This. A symmetrical face is not the same as a symmetrical photo of a face. Adding to this, the camera being even slightly off center or the head being slightly tilted can completely skew the result for any of these "rules", and that's without even going how different camera lenses can affect it as well.
I would recommend asian skincare! From websites like jolse or yesstyle, for teens I would recommend a low ph cleanser, hydrating products to balance out the water and oil content in your skin and spf. Acne patches won't hurt either! Liah Yoo has a youtube video specifically for teen skincare 😊
I once told my kids that scars mean that you are healthy. (My son has had a scar on his arm for several years and he is currently 13. Also, I have a scar where I had a rod put in my should when I broke my collarbone.) To me, scars mean you were injured or had surgery, and were able to recover.
I remember taking that survey a while ago and not really thinking about exactly what it would be for. It's really cool to know that I was contributing to the new channel. Side note, editor Dan has an indisputably handsome face.
Video idea: You should use this same rule but it reverse. Meaning, instead of finding what makes a face more attractive, you should find what makes a face scarier to then find the “perfect” monster.
The rule of 5ths and 3rds gave me flashback to art class when we were doing self portraits. The rule of 5ths matched well with how we were taught to guide our drawings. The rule of 3rds were a bit different. Which might explain that, outside of the fact that I can't draw to save my life, something about the drawing felt off. Now I know that it was the rule of 3rds XD
As someone who struggles with both facial recognition and defining attractiveness, this was easily the most informative of the premiere videos from this channel for me.
as a student currently studying in korea, this helped me feel better abt myself. The beauty standards here can be pretty harsh and it feels intimidating when you cant fit in properly, i know how to love myself and accept my flaws but its also nice to know that i can still consider myself attractive aha
I had a customer make a deodorant return the other day because there was too much aluminum because “that stuff is poison!” And I’m just standing there like “you wrap your food in this tf you talking about?” Lol
@@kevingross6774 It's my understanding that studies have shown that too much aluminum in the body - either injesting it or absorbing it like with deorderant - has been shown to link with cancer, but I haven't done any research myself.
Wow. Before this video, I had crazy disforia about my face. I put my face into procreate and put it into fifths and thirds. Matches up almost perfect exept my eye and nose on the left size. Thank you style theory!
Funnily enough we tried to follow these rules of thirds and fifths in my art class with our own faces. Almost everyone in the class (myself included) hated the way we turned out looking, until we decided to ignore the rules and just draw what we saw. I think that’s interesting-
I have honestly had really bad body image all my life but for my beloved math I decided to test my face and much to my surprise fit the two rules pretty perfectly even if my face isn't vertically symmetrical. Now whenever I feel bad I can refer back to this video and help myself feel a little better
i would LOVEEEE an episode abt how different the beauty standards are for women and men i think it’s would be so interesting to see the difference between what society demes “beautiful” in women vs a man also love the new channel!!💪💪💪
Absolutely!! Also, the difference between Eurocentric beauty standards versus the beauty standards of other countries, and why it’s wrong to push those standards onto other races and ethnicities.
Personally, I would have considered the Theorist team data from the survey into the theory, not as means of comparing it to the same symmetry standards as the other results, but instead as a prove that physical appearance isn't everything when it comes to attractiveness, even if done subconsciously or "as a joke", the intend of calling the Theorist team more attractive than random stock images proves that familiarity and just knowing a person better than a random stranger is a more valuable asset towards attractiveness, a point that would also apply into the celebrities favor, as we all amply recognize the celebrities by their acting roles or their music, immediately easing the brain into ignoring their "asymmetry" and deeming them as attractive because they are recognizable and their personas are identifiable.
I noticed while doing the questionnaire that the ones I rated highest were those that seems the happiest, the most cheerful. Sometimes their flaws were quite apparent but their expression was brimming with confidence and joy. I will admit that as I am a variant of ace conventional attractiveness doesnt apply as well to me, but presentation really matters at least to me.
If you’re talking about the trend involving criminal minds. The golden ratio is unlikely to increase you being attacked by a k*ller. That influence is more about the person’s pattern and their preference. The episode it references also specifically revolves around a dude with the obsession of perfection and the golden ratio
I loved the survey too! For so long I thought it was for the Mandela Catalogue or something like that. I didn't expect it to be for something like this.
I saw a thing recently that was essentially "Beautiful only has so many forms. Ugly, though? Infinite. I love ugliness so much more than beauty because it's so much more interesting and unique."
Wow, 5 fully fleshed out videos at once with the launch of the channel! This is so super cool. I've never seen anything like this before. So excited to see where this goes!
I'm pretty sure Film Theory and Food Theory were also launched with some videos already in there, though I definitely cannot remember the amount of said videos. That being said, I'm guessing you weren't there when that happened, which is fair.
You could’ve gone more into the rule of Phi (aka the golden ratio). This is the 1 thing that I’ve seen that has predicted beauty. Another thing is that women tend to be judged (in attraction) more harshly physically (by both men and women) and men tend to be judged more harshly based on socioeconomic status by both men and women.
@@tann_man There is no single source that supports the claims I stated; however, they are widely accepted (by data and anecdotes). To confirm my claims look up: correlation between woman's beauty and mating success, socioeconomic status of a man correlated with mating success, mating preferences ranked by men/women, etc. ^A lot of these studies are found through Springer and NIH. Google should be of great help finding these studies.
Totally digging the new channel! How about a theory on superhero costumes? Why does one outfit become iconic while another becomes an embarrassment, and why do live action movies always do something dramatically different (usually darker) than the original material?
I have ptosis on one eye since I was born. That means it's eyelid is always lowered, just above the pupil. And no, I can't lift it any higher. Anyways, I always preferred asymmetrical hair style, and still do. Even when I collect my hair into a pony tail, it is noticeably to the right. So, face asymmetry has been with me all my life.
I remember in my psychology class we talked about the same thing, and if I remember correctly the conclusion that was drawn was that Beauty is a mix of the brain loving proportions and symmetry, but also uniqueness from deviations from said norm, do to it being more memorable.
Love this channel! I work as a tailor, so the genre is definitely up my alley! I’d love to see an episode on if fabric softener is actually worth it or if it’s beneficial or even an episode on Japanese Americana
Mat perfectly symmetrical is so cursed 😭😭. Tbh I didn’t really expect much for Style Theorist but after watching all the videos so far I’m hooked. Can’t wait for more.
I think the symmetrical faces mainly looks unearthly because of the odd lighting, the majority of the stock photos had one side of the face lit up and the other slightly darker. When the image is flipped symmetrically the face is lit up unnaturally making it seem eery. The faces of the theorists had much more even lighting although not completely perfect so they looked a little better then the stock photos when symmetrical. I still think that a perfectly symmetrical face would still score lower but I think the large difference is mainly because of the unnatural lighting.
Love the new channel! I'm not sure if this is on topic enough for this channel, but I'd love to see a video that explores the real connection between amount of sleep and the bags under eyes. Is it actually possible to get rid of them all together? And can you really tell how much sleep some has gotten lately just from looking at their eyes?
This kept running in my mind during the entire episode Heather Macnamara: And a symmetrical face. If I took a meat cleaver down the center of your skull Id have matching halves. That's very important.
I think there is a personality factor too which does get caught in photographs but it’s harder to measure. Also just like everyone likes certain clothes, colours and shoes… It’s all subjective fam
The best light is direct soft light to your face. The same lights that influencers and youtubers use when making videos. The worst is directly above and directly bellow your face.
0:01 that picture of matpat has gotten so old that its hard to think it as a real picture and not a mc paint product sry mat. and dw it will never get old
A few years ago I learned about flipping your art. I understand the concept but something made me do an experiment where I drew a face portrait, then took the portrait and did a horizontal flip on half of it, one I copied the right, one I copied the left. The results were overall more favorable for the asymmetrical portrait I did than the two symmetrical portraits. It was kind of funny.
I think one of the subjective factors to attractiveness also has to do with familiarity and the "energy" someone projects. Often times a person will seem a lot more attractive the more you know them, especially if they exude genuine confidence.
I guess since dedicating entire videos to him wasn't enough to entice Markiplier to actually watch, MatPat has now resorted to shameless flattery and simping 😆
i'd love to see a video comparing the female gaze vs male gaze, you sorta touch it with the standards for symmetry, but it'd be interting, especially since i think femake gaze considers style or personality more than male gaze
around 15:00 you mention a gender difference, my theory based on evolution is that rougher, imperfect men seem more attractive since that proves their strength, meanwhile a more perfect and untouched woman seems more attractive since they're healthier just throwing that out there, very likely wrong
I've been struggling with body dysmorphia (specifically over my facial/jaw structure) from a young age, and it's a daily, silent battle. As an adult, it's surprisingly harder because random new adult friends and acquaintances feel compelled to point out my asymmetrical face, suggest procedures, or ask if I've tried the app to see what I'd look like if I "fixed" my face. I brush it off in the moment, but damn...
I've watched all the videos, and I can say two things: 1. This is the only style-related channel I'm subscribed to, and 2. I only take advice on style from channels or creators that are stylish, but not known as a "fashion guru".
@@StyleTheorists I usually miss seeing the surveys, but this was one of the few I actually caught! I remember thinking, "Well this is weird and unexpected, but I'ma just go with it!" It was really fun to see the results, though apparently I'm a lot nicer than the average survey-taker lol
When I did this survey I was wondering why some of the images were repeating, I didnt even notice that some were normal and others edited to be symetrical, they just looked the same.
8:42 I actually figured it out rather quickly when answering, but I still just answered with my first instincts (And NO, I wasn't biased and I judged everything as fair as I could)

I think maybe the fact that the shadows were flipped also in the symmetrical faces gave an uncanny , unsettling, look to them. To do the test correctly, you’d need the shadows to appear natural
I'd love to have seen this video with K-Pop idols in mind. What's deemed exceptionally beautiful in K-Pop is pretty different that that of most Western media. South Korea is also very fond of symmetry, so we tend to see more symmetry in different idols. K-Pop fans also have a unique perspective on beauty that I imagine would be fascinating to look into. I know not everyone here is very fond of K-Pop, but from a more scientific side of things, they might have a big impact on the results of studies like this. :)
I think it would be cool for a video on the impact of body image and clothing choices! Other ideas: evolution of body image, body hair and removal, influence of fast fashion, fast fashion vs high end (quality, company influence), color palettes for skin tones, evolution of under garments
btw, did you know that in most cases u can measure most of ur face with the length of one of ur eyes? space between the eyebrows? eye. nose bridge? eye. nose button? eye. forehead? double eye. vertical/horizontal cheek length? double eye. mouth? eye. lip? probably half eye. between mouth and chin? eye! ear? double eye vertical, one eye horizontal! even if we're not perfectly symmetrical, as these measures won't fit peeerfectly but closely, we still follow a personal, unique symmetry.
5:18 actually most greek sculptures are asymmetrical, the older ones were perfectly symmetrical so they were perceived as dull and boring, so the artists started making them pose in an asymmetrical way and make their faces asymmetrical as well. In art asymmetric is beautiful
At 13:27 you talk about the guy who doesnt have even proportions but i 100% believe thats part of the picture problem with the angle it was taken. If you look at his shoulders he is facing to the side and has his head turned towards the camera but its not quite square with the camera which is what is throwing it off. I dont think his ears are that different, just that you can see one more than the other due to the angle.

It's a very poor way of doing the study. If you measure how symmetrical the faces are and then check whether more symmetrical gets higher scores instead of making unnatural faces you'd have a waaaay better measurement.
Even as a face blind person, the perfectly symmetrical faces are super uncanny valley.
Yeah it's unnatural. I don't like it.
That might be why Harrison Ford and Chris Evans rate so highly. Mostly inline but something human.
I thought that would just be "uncanny"
Yeah, perfectly symmetrical faces tend to be very uncanny. I’m an illustrator and I actually take advantage of that when drawing someone I’m trying to make creepy or uncanny, I perfectly mirror their face and give them unnaturally exaggerated facial features.
How does face blindness work when you look at the symmetrical pictures? Do you see them and then forget them?
Learning that Mark doesn't pass the test is definitely a confidence booster. If the sexiest man on the Internet doesn't pass then maybe these tests aren't so important after all.

One more thing , since the faces were flipped in Photoshop , it also flipped the lighting, causing the uncanny valley effect in there , wonder how it'd go if the lighting was fixed as it was in the original
I was about to say it, prolly because of the shadows.

@Fortecielo oh no i am gonna die, wait i am already dead… i am already bones…
If you ever get the chance to revisit this concept, you should include naturally symmetrical faces to the survey, and for the Photoshop faces work on the shading and eye direction, many of those faces hit the uncanny valley because you can tell they've been digitally altered, either by the shadows not working the way shadows normally work or the eyes no longer looking in the same direction, or both. This can definitely be expanded upon to make a serious, potentially publishable, bit of research.
Ya, imagine the photoshop faces go into the uncanny valley.
There is no such thing as a perfectly symmetrical face, there will always be something.
Or they could have used pictures with soft straight ahead lighting

I pictured it too.
i also think part of the issue with just flipping the face is the lighting. with a lot of the natural photos, half the face was in shadow, so removing that made it look unnatural (not to mention the eyes not looking in the same direction)
Absolutely!
I was about to say the same thing, the unnatural lighting is dipping into the uncanny valley

I also felt uncanny valley ! This was one of. The only times I’ve felt it and was just about the symmetry. Brains are weird huh 😅
I saw some of then and murmured "Dang, this person's definitely an alien. Kin-"

The biggest problem with that symmetrical face flip filter is that the shadows on the face aren't corrected and make it feel artificial and enters uncanny valley territory.
exactly! since shadows weren't corrected the face seems 'flat'
This is exactly why photographs are generally placing a highlight to one side of the face (except for pass photos)
I tried it, and when I saw the results for my right side, I was shocked. I looked like some superhuman Lmau.
That was legit my first thought when I saw the flipped faces. Just shoved straight into the uncanny valley.

I'm kinda hoping they do a theory on hair textures and why many stylists aren't trained to do curly hair.
For our first creepier, disturbing Fashion Theory (You know they'll come) can we get a Theory on the Uncanny Valley and why ancient humans would develop the idea that perfectly symetrical, beautiful faces are wrong and uncomfortable?
because aliens had symettrical faces !!! 😱😱😱 or maybe something more sinister... like DEMONS ?!!?!?!? 🧐
As for why humans developed the reaction, though, the most believable theory I've seen is simple: We had to learn to instinctively avoid dead bodies because of things like sickness and such
@@GrizzlyBearable Dead bodies, yeah, but also rabies.

I am super excited to see what this new channel brings!!
I think he actually mentioned that would be a future theory when he announced the new channel.
Yo Pikachu PFP gang\cult lol
Exactly
I was looking for this
Hey mat I think the uncanny valley might play a role in the manufactured mirrored faces since we can subconsciously tell that something isn't "human"

The rule of 5ths and 3rds gave me flashback to art class when we were doing self portraits. The rule of 5ths matched well with how we were taught to guide our drawings.

As an artist who loves to draw asymmetrical faces this is so kind

If you look at his shoulders he is facing to the side and has his head turned towards the camera but its not quite square with the camera which is what is throwing it off. I dont think his ears are that different, just that you can see one more than the other due to the angle.
I think that I was part of the problem because I am gay so I rated guys lower but I felt bad giving them a zero so I gave them like a 2
exactly 😂
Is it just me or was this one of your BEST videos ? I’m pretty sure I’ve been watching you since high school! This was so well executed by mind was blown by the possibility of how much MORE you can do with your channel and brand, and where you all seem to be taking this. Y’all could really show up some of these scientists because 40,000 responses in a WEEKEND? These videos are damn near almost better than some published papers, real talk! Imagine a future where published papers can be videos for the actual public to criticize and review ? Creators would just need to get officially peer reviewed ? And maybe some other legal stuff haha. I’m blown by the impact of creators like you all these days!
Imagine peer review through the comment section. Things could get rough.
But honestly love the concept!
To my eyes, anytime I would see a face or object that looks too perfect or symmetrical, it make me feel as though it's fake or unnatural. Seeing a flaw allows me to have a sense of distinction and realness. Even down to the smile. A perfect set of teeth is creepy to me lol
14:00 Is it bad that he said rihanna and I automatically knew forehead would be a factor? 💀
11:43 dam bro you didn’t need to cook her like that
