I mean, if anything, the red and green does actually match. For version 2.0 you do actually need more out there colors. Radioactive lima bean green, petroil blue, dark oranges.
Exactly, the colours aren’t saturated enough, they need to be brighter and harder on the eyes! And there needs to be more clashing colours to make it worst

It would be SO much worse if the pattern was entirely random. Like, a stocking here, a christmas tree there, and maybe a creepy raindeer thrown ito the mix.

Right, I expected a face, but for all the talk about character, at the final reveal, there just wasn't one.
I don't think it was the hairy texture that was bad but the realistic hair that was throwing everyone off. The puffball on the reindeer shirt that was picked was cute but the one in the survey looked almost greasy.. like you could comb it..
Yeah, just imagine they replaced Santa's beard with hair that you could brush.

Lol I thought the one in the video looked cute and cartoony. I also thought that you didn't really show any reindeer that entered uncanny valley. Except the one with the greasy hair.
I'd argue that the bow isn't big enough or constrasting enough to actually be noticable as the 3d element. I think you'd need a bunch of the same 3d elements and subvert it with a single vastly different one
Personally I think that’s what what makes it even worse.
You take in all the things wrong with the sweater
and before you can compose your self and really comprehend it.

4 with each being different and wrong in some way, 1 is just random enough to be fun, 2 is not as random but its an even number, 3 is fine since they will make a triangle and subconsciously you will see symmetry even if not oriented correctly it will be whimsical, 5 and up and it starts to get too crowded and will never drop into uncanny valley or go too far and become fun again. For example the Titans from Attack on Titan, they are deep in uncanny valley but because of their execution they are a brilliant art design.

No way. The "ugliest" sweater wasn't that bad. The brown sweater with the mutant reindeer was much worse. The mottled pattern of the brown background looked positively diseased, like rotting zombie skin. The reindeer looked like someone modeled after a reindeer cadaver they found on the side of the road that had been hit by 4 cars and left in the sun for a week.

Every single reply is an "I agree" and i agree i would wear this sweater the feet arent very uncanny and the ribbons not enough maybe they get a few points for the pattern but thats it.

It could have been worse. He could have had multiple pictures of Santa's feet in place of the socks.

The beard too. It's giving more "floof" than "hairy".
I wonder if hairy feet could've added to it
the top ugliest was like that because the "hairy" texture was actually in place of hair, and looked greasy. In the version you made, the beard doesn't look nearly as bad as that reindeer. The reindeer also had red eyes and an expression that looked like a serial killer that this one was lacking. Cringy Christmas words would have made it weirder, as well as ornaments. For all the hate you gave the 3d Christmas tree sweater, I don't see any 3d things except for those bows, which aren't that noticeable.
Yeah nothing popped out or any face. I thought there would be something popped up 3d all around and the stockings look, nice, not busy or unorganized.
I’m impressed that they kept missing the mark with “hairy” texture. The faux sherpa texture and whatnot is not HAIR. The horrible Rudolph one just had a TUFT OF HAIR
Sherpa and faux sherpa is a normal thing to see on a sweater, but a random tuft of hair is gross and uncanny

I think that for 2.0 they need to play with color undertones. Red and green kinda match but if they make a dark warm red sweater with neon green that will clash and look hideous
It needs more chaos, randomness, and abstractness. Unmatching colors, different patterns, realistic and unrealistic together, and just more to truly assault the eyes. The one you made is one that you would still wear but no one would disown you for it. That's what we should be going for.
I agree because the feet are the only thing that really bothers me. Everything else is just silly or not off putting.
You need to use opposing colors together
Other than the santa portion, the rest of the sweater really isn't that bad. Gotta agree that they need more unmatching colors, and more disquieting portions besides just the santa.
add another layer size of sweater the smaller the better I've seen someone wear a toddler-size regular sweater and win a 600-participant competition
It’s the colors for me. Make the snowflakes blue to clash with the green of the socks or something. The colors there now are too complimentary.
And yes, the socks don’t match each other, but the pattern still feels to regular and symmetrical. Our brains like symmetry so it’s gotta be immediately identifiable as asymmetrical
After they mention the furriness on the other sweaters, I was surprised they didn't make Santa's toes hairy.

Honestly? I'm underwhelmed. Not enough 3d elements and clashing of different characters. throw in some weird three d frosty the snowman and it'd reach it's truest potential.
Same. Although the spread legs on the Santa was a nice touch.
I think if Santa was wearing one sock it would have been better.
I feel like more 3D elements could have made it even worse. Just, make it super busy with 3D elements awkwardly placed all over and not synced up with the socks at all. Maybe even different sized and different objects? Also, I absolutely abhorred the off-white color pallette, so that was perfect.
Ya, I don't think the final product was nearly as bad as the 3D element heavy one.

The sweater with the garland and ornaments in the front but blank in the back is actually a VERY accurate rendition of all of those Christmas trees out there shoved in a corner or against a wall with a totally blank or at least very, very sparse "backside".
Amy wearing a corset over a santa costume is everything and so her vibe she makes this channel my fav out of the 4

One thing that the disturbing reindeer face had that the final product didnt was the face element. When uncanny valley goes for the face, its a whole new level of disturbing. The eye divets paired with the smile are what did it for me too, because not only was it in the uncanny valley, but it looked like it was faking its happiness.
Just another layer of psychological horror to think about for next year.
Yeah, they didn't capture the uncanny valley FACE that's really the star of the uncanny valley art.
MAYBE with sweatier looking socks and hairy santa toes we need disturbing reindeer faces
they could've made something similar for the back
they could even make the nose plastic so it's even uncomfortable to sit down in bc ur back just has plastic on it
Imagine if the socks were actual 3d socks that you could reach into. That would be _actually_ horrendous
But you could then hide little candies in them and have easy snack pouches, or one could hold your phone or something depending on how big they are made.

You need wayyyyyyyy more 3D objects on that sweater than just the singular bow. I do agree with the uneven factor about the singular bow. But we need way more 3D objects on that sweater haha
lights and/or a moving element (think spinners or waving arms) those things just make my eyes roll SO hard

I would have made the feet and hands 3d objects. Instead of the fluff. I would have put actuall hair.
Still not as bad as that brown reindeer one, that thing was just disturbing... I think more brown and perhaps having the bow be bright yellow and on the collar would be even worse. Also, each snowflake should have one yellow jewel glued on, but so small and almost the same yellow that it would be close to unnoticeable. Last thing: I think part of ugliness is if the sweatter looks uncomfortable to wear, so perhaps use a material that looks like it would itch when you touch it.
Also lime green for something would probably look bad as well, like bright green feet…

I always hated clothing that that lit up, looked/felt extremely uncomfortable to wear, tried way too hard to be trendy/funny/edgy, and/or was constantly falling apart and getting everywhere(i.e. glitter, sequins, tassels, loose fuzz/3d-elements, ect)
I feel like the tops of the stockings all over the sweater would be even better if they were also done like the beard. That extra bit of 3D texture all around it would've added so much to this. Missed opportunity. But it's still a fun little experiment y'all did. 😆

I've been subscribed to this channel since day one. I've been a Game Theory and Film Theory fan for a while. Then Food Theory rolled around, and now this! I'm so excited to see that it's almost to 3 million already!!! Keep up the great work MatPat!
There is plenty of room for improvement, even when sticking to that design.
I mean...:
Add little bits of "real" white hair to the beard in a patchy way.
Make 3 of the Socks real and just tacked on.
Add random unfitting colors to 1 or 2 parts of the sock designs also at random. (like one of the pattern patches being blindingly pink, while the rest of the sock stays green and white)
Add bells to the wrist.
Make Santas feet glow in the dark and barely noticeably hairy (or make him have Hobbit feet and also make the hair real).
Make the snowflakes blindingly neon yellow (or a colorful mess of all kinds of nonmatching neon colors)
Make one of Santas hands have cookie crumbs on them (and the beard too)
Etc.
I don't think anything this year can beat my Bambi "When I grow up, I'll be served with red wine" sweater.
Part 2: the style theorist team designs & makes the sweaters. I think using a professional designer to make this one still makes it kind of a esthetic. We need some glitter and tinsel and fur in places it just shouldn't be.

This thing should incorporate aluminum foil. It's bad, but it's not physically assaulting the eyes. Very shiny foil would fix that.

I unironically like the christmastree sweater! Although it's sad the pattern isn't continuing the whole way around, if the pattern did go all around (except for the christmas baubles, cause that would be uncomfy when leaning back) I would totally wear it for christmas! lol

Any way to make it “look” uncomfortable? Feel like that would add to the unnerving element of the sweater. It looks bad, but it doesn’t make me wince upon looking at it. If it looked like it was a chore to put on, or even painful, that would send it over the top! Looking forward to the next one!
I seen worse on the quiz lol, I like that one, the fact it's just socks and snow even at random makes it look like a nice pattern, the bow should be in a less logical place and the beard should be longer and more wirey. Also the feet need to be like 3 toed (4 is to normal at least to me cause of cartoons) and hyper detailed to really set off the uncanny Valley
2.0 needs to clash more. Like cherry red with bright, MS Paint green. Maybe some blue LED Christmas lights to really make it feel cursed. The kind of clashing where the shades are so diametrically opposed that it gives you a migraine to try and get your eyes to focus on any one point on the sweater.

I think the sweater could be worse... Even with the bow its still way too artistically balanced... perhaps add a green tutu to the bottom hem
Better yet, make it a florescent green half tutu with very poorly lined up, unevenly cut orange and hot pink underlayers.

Even my phone hated this. When Mat pulled out the sweater my phone immediately died and when it was charged again and I clicked on the video agen it set me back five minutes. I’m going to by one to give to my brother.

4 things to add to make it even uglier is random elf heads that dont match (they should look like attack on titan titans) and add random bits of the beard material to the socks on the white parst and add a different material to SANTAS feet so it feels scratchy and also add a random MERRY CHRISTMAS with mixed letters everywhere on the sweater so even the patterns on the socks cant stay the same and THEN you have the perfect UGLIEST CHRISTMAS SWEATER! 🤢
honestly, I think that making the hands and feet of the santa into 3d protrusions would be *especially* heinous X'D

I think you need an unsettling reindeer with small beady eyes staring into your sou. Their small character incorporating a person is fine, but I think it is just a facet of the off looking character.
See if you can make the characters art style inconsistent as well in order to prevent any sort of ability for the mind to categorize the horror

Things to make it worse- hair on the tops of the feet and on the back of the hands (with a different material). Yellowed/damaged toenails/fingernails. A mismatched hood with reindeer antlers (or any deer antlers, the further off the better). I feel like the singular bow wasn't enough dangly bit, so maybe like those tassels that you see on old cowboy/native american clothes but tinsel? You can also do double *you*, where tiny santa is up top, but it also looks like the bottom of your shirt is riding up and your belly is poking out too. Or even better, make it a tied-off sweater with your actual belly showing.
