Begonia maculata | My Experience with Cane Begonia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лис 2024
- Hello plant friends! Today I bring you my Begonia maculata. In this video we take a look at my Begonia that you saw in one of my previous videos and I share with you my experience growing cane begonias. In my opinion, they are were easy if you get some of the basic things right (like watering, for example). I discuss some other things that are very important such as light, humidity, potting mix and the choice of the pot.
This isn't my first time trying begonias though! Oh, no mister! I tried begonias last year and I didn't have a lot of luck but I think this year begonia gods decided to forgive me and bless me with some beautiful begoners!
I hope you enjoyed this video. I also tried something new. I hope it wasn't too awkward. As always, thank you for watching and see you very soon!
P.S. Keep buying plants, don't leave me hanging!

Some of these ideas seemed better in my head 🤣 But at least Begonia is nice. 🌿
Basie Plants all youre videos are🙌🏼
Oh, thank you! 💚 It's really nice to hear positive feedback. :)
Watching two years later, still laughing at the intro 😊
I have a massive begonia maculata and I just bring it into my bathroom when I shower, then leave her in her overnight. That has worked well for me over the year/two years that I rescued the plant.
Begonia’s can grow on riverbanks, so they like humidity and wet, but drained soil. They like to be in small pots and love bright, indirect light or a grow light. I take my maculata outside as soon as temperatures go above 10 degrees Celsius, because it’s more humid and light outside.
I sadly can't keep up with watering when they are outside. Too hot and dry.
Nice little Maranta in the background
You make this tutorial so funny and interesting❤️
I hope you had fun watching the video 😊
Top marks for entertainment and information...a rare combo.
Begoners have entered the chat.
This is the day I realized you can be a hoya hoarder and a begoners as well.
Hello I am here from your Root Rot video Betsy 😊 thanks for recommending a new channel to subscribe to!
Basie Plants you sure can! Both are my favourite types of plant to purchase 😊
@@nemo5288 Oh, if only those two were my only plant addictions xD
Dude wtf happened to me, i just watch plant videos all day
Same, same
It's too late to get out now :D
There are worse things 😂 Like finishing a TV show and it's the last season. 😂
I'm not sure who I love more You or @betsybegonia. So I will divide my live evenly. Great Job! Very funny and educational.👍🏾👍🏾😊
Haha, well those are pretty big shoes to fill in 😅 Thank you for those nice words. 💚
The fighting with yourself is me! Instant like lol
Begonias are one of my favorites!!!! Great video. 😃👍🏼🪴
I love to see them in other people's collection. ♥️
I know you don't like them :( But I forgive you
@@BasiePlants ❤️❤️❤️😘
Awesome video. Thank you. Just got my first begonia maculata and I’m super excited!
Thank you! I hope your begonia grows well. I think maculata is very easy to take care for!
Basie Plants I’m happy to hear that. Pretty dm sure my Rex begonia hates it at my house. 😂
Gorgeous Begonia! Not easy to take care of, good luck 🌱💚
Thanks! I haven't had any issues with it and it will soon be a year. I love it! 💚
it looks happy .Shows us the light situation.
I like the funnies you added to this video - made me smile while watching... thank you
Very enjoyable and happy to hear of the fails and then successes after! Gives me hope as somehow I lost all the leaves on my maculata but kept the cane sticks .... with hope.
I've lost leaves on all my cane begonias, only the stems left and hoping they'll recover.
‘If it’s alive, be thankful’ Aaaaand subscribe
Hahaha 😂 Well, it IS true :D Thank you for subscribing ;)
Olala that Verru...!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍
And that Maranta Lemon Lime !!!!😍😍😍😊😊
Ouhhh and that Hoya!!!!!😍😍😍😍
Lol well all of your plants are gorgeous!
Verrucosum grew so much since then! And the hoya too :) Maranta... well, we had red spider mites. 😂
Love your sense of humour Miro! (please correct me if I spelt your name wrong 👍)
Thank you! That is an excellent way to spell my name :D And of course, correct! :)
You are so brave! The courage it must have taken to admit you are an under - waterrer! You are an inspiration and keep doing what you are doing. Entertaining video and you have given me hope that I can keep my begonia alive. I am currently on #2 so I hope with your advice I can avoid going through 7 or 8 before I get it right. It doesn't seem to like the light in my kitchen so i am considering putting it under a grow light.
I love your video!!! You are so funny and your information helped me! Thank you!
That’s a great looking plant 👍🏼 nice info
Thanks! I find it really easy :)
*goes and look for microfiber clothes to cut up* 🤣 great tip!!!
Haha :D Well, true self-watering pots are very expensive and only come in couple of sizes, so you gotta do what you gotta do :D It works!
I had microfiber bath towels I got as presents a couple Christmases back which I haven’t used ever (bcoz I just prefer cotton). Now I pulled them from my closet and planning on their new use 😅😀
Omg.. luv the alter ego chatter !!!
Hahaha 😂 Thank you. I wasn't sure.
@@BasiePlants it was alot of fun to watch!
It makes me very happy to hear that 😁
Agreed! ❤️
I bumped on this cool video being a begonia newbie parent and trying to understand my 2 maculatas in plastic pots. Most days they’re looking fabulous but some days, they are definitely this! 🤣 6:30
😂 Everyone finds this video somehow :D Was not expecting it for this video lol
Your begonias are very pretty and your video made me feel better about growing begonias! Mine is only one cutting with a couple of leaves.
I hope you'll have great luck with your begonia!
Ive killed one because it came with fungus gnats and I couldnt get rid of them..I was also a beginner. And now this time the plant was beautiful...no gnats..little sun damage but was thriving overall..or so i thought. It was actually very water logged. It had no drainage and began dropping leaves after I watered it. I got it some drain holes and removed much of the soil and put it in a tropical mix with lava rock and perlite. Im hoping thatll help. Im still learning as i go
Why is it so fun? 😅 I’m also a “begonia expert” but this season I fall in love with some specisies💕💕 so I’ve ordered some and hope I’ll manage not to kill them
Begonias love it❤️💚☘️
more begonia talk pls!!!! loved this video
I will try to! :) But I do stand by me not being a begonia expert 😂
HAHAHAA THE BEST VIDEO, really you're so funny! kkkkk
So happy I stumbled on your channel! Subscribed! : )
What a fun video to watch, you are very entertaining. Love your begonia! I have one that is small but flourishing. Hopefully it will be as pretty as yours someday.
Thank you! I am very happy you enjoyed it! I am sure yours will be pretty too. They are quite easy-going (most of the time).
Great video! Its just nice to hear that everyone sometimes struggle with some plants. I also have a polka dot begonia at home and somehow she does not grow taller just bushier haha. Ngl i sometimes cant believe that the dots on them are real
LOL, I love this. Great Vibes 🌿
Glad you liked it :)
Chill out! I love your videos!
Haha, thank you :D
Bas mi je trebao ovaj video, jer je moja prva begonia maculata po dolasku odbacila 2/3 listova. Ovo sto je ostalo drzi se nekako, nadam se da ce izdrzati dok je ne skuzim ;)
Nice content. Explained well. By the way what is that plant at the back of your left hand side. It has palmate star shaped, striped leaves
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. Do you mean Begonia diadema? It is a very nice one. :)
@@BasiePlants the one leaning over the yellow ladder
@@dr.sreedevirao2339 yes, Begonia diadema :)
Really cute video! Still very much struggling with my maculata. All the leaves are crispy even the ones that are still waiting to unfurl already has brown tips. I am contemplating if I should cut all the leaves off and just start it over bald. Like you said, they will grow out new leaves. Right? I have tried everything I can with this plant. Sad.
Oh, I am sorry to hear that! Well, the smaller one I have arrived in terrible condition and it was able to recover. I think brown tips could be result of inconsistent watering? I find that they really don't like to get bone dry, so that's why am I using a self-watering pot (or my DIY version of it). I wouldn't defoliate the plant, if anything you can cut it back and then the new shots will grow. I actually did this to one of my cane begonias because it was just getting too big. It takes some time for them to grow after that, but they do. Maybe you can first try to modify you care to see if it can grow new leaves without browning and then you can decide what to do from then. Otherwise, you might end up cutting your plant and without modified care, you will still get brown edges.
Mine died down to 3 sticks…I pulled it from the pot, and realized it was in one of those death plugs! Removed that thing, repotted and voila it’s huge now!
Hello plant friend xx
Youre actually really funny, subscribed!
Thank you! :D Glad you think so 😂
Nice!!!👍🏻
Thanks for the video.
Thank you more for sitting through it! :)
Your maculata is stunning :)
Funny you should write this now as I chopped it up 😂 It got too big so I decided to trim it but I may have gotten carried away 👀
@@BasiePlants lmao. It will be super full and lush if you are potting it all back together!!
I enjoyed your video ... it's fun! May I know what fertilizer you are using?
I am using Bio Grow from BioBizz and Algamic for "regular" houseplants. I use RainMix for Hoyas and Orchids
Hej Miro! I really enjoy your videos! I just have to say, I am sooo curious about one of the plants behind you, also a begonia I believe, the one with like star/finger-leaves. What is it? :)
Have you experienced curling leaves?
Hello, my name is Ruth, and I am an underwaterer ✋🏼🤦🏻♀️🙈
What is the name of the begonia you killed? When would you say they like to be watered? When first inch or two of soil is dry or deeper?
Nordic glacier, Black Mamba, African Jungle, Hildegard Schneider. I don't have the IDs for all of them :) I keep mine in self-watering pots, and I add water once a week (now even more because my reservoir is small). You can wait until the leaves start to get a bit droopy but don't wait for them to go all the way down. I would say that first half of the soil dry :)
please but I want them to bloom mine used to bloom I repotted it but what do yoy do? hope you answer, you seem so nice! i´ll become your first greatest fan XD tia
where can you buy the plant distancer?
Great Video - thank you.
You're welcome! Glad you liked it :)
Love this video heheheh! And learned a lot!😘
It is great to hear that! I hope it was informative to some extent :)
I’ve had a begonia maculata for about a month now which I bought from someone on Facebook. It has been producing new leaves that are a decent sized but the backs never turn fully red. Any idea why?
Are the older leaves red on the back? It might be too much nitrogen in the fertilizer. It might be the case that too much chlorophyl is being produced and the red is not visible. Or at least that's what I read :) You can read more about this in the 70th volume of The Begonian (March/April 2003) on the American Begonia Society website.
Basie Plants yes the older leaves have fully red backs. Thanks so much! I’ll definitely check out that article
Nice job on plant. Is that the same Begonia they call angel wing Begonia? Great information for all plants.
They call several begonias that look similar to this one Angel Wing Begonia. I think they more commonly call this one Polka Dot Begonia? Thanks for watching :)
You crack me up and I did kill many begonias too.
We are begonia killers together :D
What is the plant to the right of your left shoulder?? In between the Rex and the polka dot begonia plant. It’s the rly bright green one
Looks like another Rex to me
Came for the Begonias, stayed for Basie
Have you grown begonias Sophia?
Auto like!
Auto like your like!
Thanks for the video!(: I just got a plant at Home Depot labeled “polka dot begonia”, but her leaves are super dry and crispy, and there’s no silver spots whatsoever. This is probably such a dumb question but Can the polka dots fade if they weren’t taken care of properly?
i dont believe the spots themselves can fade, but the vibrancy of the green and silver spots can definitely fade. maybe it’s a different variety of begonia?
@@emilyadams1970 that’s definitely possible, thank you! Probably mis labeled (:
wow..so nice..feom where u found it
I bought it in a local garden center :)
Lmao! New sub for sure!
Thanks! That makes me very happy! :D
I think I am at two stick stage with my begonia miss mummy 🤦🏻♀️
Let's see what happens...🙄
Ouch. I was at that stage too! Now I have 5 rex begonias that were destroyed by thrips and they are at... pot of soil stage praying to God they start growing again? We will see. We can go through this together.
@@BasiePlants You are so hilarious 😂
Atleast I am better off among two of us...
I broke one stick and propagated it and it seems to be working!😉
👍😉🌿
Love your video ❣️😂🪴
Begonia Maculata - sounds like a great drag queen name
