This plant grew on me! It was failing for so long but never dying. Mine had that starter plug fabric cup on the roots. Once I cut it off and freed the roots it grew like crazy. Mine was from a big box store. If nothing seems to work check the roots! Great tips. Thank you.
Mine is drying out (burnt tips) , yellowing and thinning like paper above burnt tips and has dark lines just under the leafs on the cane. I'm new to this type of plant( I was given it when my son passed away in January this year, because it's also called Angel wing) so I do not want to lose it! HELP ME PLEASE! THANK YOU!!
Is that starter plug fabric bad? I was excited that maybe it was my ticker out of trying to figure out watering 🥲. Maybe if I get the edges of the plant because it has fine roots it will be ok?
WAOW Thanks so much! Honestly, I've got a lot of exotic plants and it's not behaving the same as most. I've always ended up killing these Begonias over time or stunning their growth by fear of root rot (it's real but as long as it drains well, the plant spits out whatever it doesn't need). Definitely a game changer NOT to let them dry in between waterings.
Sheffield Made Plants suggests treating your water with aquarium water treatment (buffer) to prevent leaf crisping. I've tried it and it does work. My plants that tended to have this issue are now producing perfect leaves. So y'all might want to give that a try. I got mine on Amazon and you only need a few drops per pint.
I'm obsessed with my begonias, have fallen in love with every rex or cane I ever saw, so I really appreciate this comprehensive video because my love of my angel wing....does not seem to be reciprocated. back. Thank you!
I've thanked you before for explaining so much information about each of the plants' root system you do videos on, but seriously!! it's soooo helpful! when you mentioned humidity probably not being the issue, immediately I was like "hmmmmm. with fine roots, it sounds like they're more likely suffocating the root system with dense soil and frequent watering than the humidity affecting the foliage." That was 100% the case with a few of my calatheas and your videos absolutely helped me with that 'aha!' moment :)
I feel like this plant is just perfect for me because I can't stop fussing about it lol I am constantly misting and checking moisture for them. It's always grown beautifully and QUICK for me. Thick and lush with many stems in one pot. Also I LOVE how it sprouts roots along the stems in water. I struggle with plants that need a more "hands off" approach
Thanks for a great video! I have a very large Begonia Maculata that I have never staked up. I've pruned it / taken cuttings many times, and perhaps that gives the stems time to become sturdy enough to support all the growth. In the summer I put this plant outside, but in shade. (Indoors, it likes a sunny spot.) It's not that the sun is strong here (Sweden) but it does get MANY hours of daylight then.
I saw one with 4 leaves and the tiniest pot and then saw the price. 8$ for a 4 leaf plant but the money just flew out of my wallet. Later I saw what I thought was going to be a flower but it unfurled into a new leaf. Stunning plant that started my Begonia fascination. Dragon wing in the garden. A red and black Rex in the house and a few more common types around the yard.
Thank you thank you thank you for your excellent tips! I’m a new begonia maculata dad and I just paid a pretty penny for mine, they are so expensive, at least here in SF Bay Area! I also got mine at a “plant studio”, aka euphemism for overpriced plant shop 😂 In any case, I LOVE the way these plants look, so decorative and definitely a looker!
This is informative - in all aspects of care of this plant. I have had a plant that did not do well, I'm now caring for another that I hope will thrive. Thanks. A new fan here.
This was great!! I've had one for about 6 months but haven't been into it at all. You made me want to give it some attention and see if I can't get it to thrive!! Thanks for the info AND the inspiration!!
I agree with the underwatering = crispy leaves. I live in a tropical country and the average humidity in my house is 75% and around 85F temperatures. When I forget to water the begonia I get crispy leaves and she's still in high temps and high humidity. It's kind of tricky getting right the amount of water she needs. Also I agree with more light! My first one declined quite quickly because I kept her indoors and with relative medium/low light. Recently I got a new one and I have her in my east facing balcony and it's getting a ton of morning sun, it's growing and doing so much better than the first time around.
I just got a similar one and it is soooo pretty. Thanks for explaining the care, I feel much more confident now! I have had wax and Rex begonias before but not one of these cane/angel wing types. Thanks!
Thank you for these care guides! They are my go-to resource whenever I get a new type of plant. Quick question: Do you acclimate your plants to ambient when they outgrow the cabinet? If so, how do you acclimate? Thanks again!
I sooo appreciate your concise and informative video, it is overwhelming with the amount of resources and even how annoyingly so much of search results are just saturated with descriptions of plants for sale. You are engaging, interesting, and easy for me to understand. It’s also amazing how your video is broken down into the segments so I can actually find whichever part I need to review and be reminded of. Thank you so much for your work and I look forward to learning more from you!! 🌱🌿🪴❤
I just got one of these and it is sad looking, I'm happy that it shouldn't be sad looking for too long! If i get crispy i know it's my water bc i have hard water. I think humidity is the issue when it's a humidity swing, example, buying from a greenhouse that feels like you're going into a wall of water as you enter then bringing it home to normal humidity and there seems to be a harder transition for any plant IME. When I've ordered online or bought from a grocery store the plant usually never looks as sad again after a few days of my light and temperatures etc. Even though i don't have good windows i have the right amount of lamps i guess!
Just had a leaf fall off that had no indication of a problem. No browning, yellowing etc. Have been trying for a year to grow one of these polka dot gems but several have died. First thought it was the lack of humidity in the air and now have a small humidity tent that I keep them in. Now they don't seem to need watering as much as I check the level with a moisture meter and it seems to be right in the middle, not dry and not drenched. Now, after watching your video, I am thinking it's not getting enough sun. Thank you for your insight, so helpful
Thank you very much, I have one in my office that a friend of mine gave me, and the leafs are getting brown and crispy. Am going take it home and repot it and a different soil. Thanks again, you are awesome 👍🏽
We have two Begonias, one exactly like in your video. Nowhere as big as yours, however, it does have one leaf that is crispy. The rest of the plant itself is blooming like a crazy. I have been keeping a much closer eye on it's watering schedule and I do notice it doesn't like being under watered. So, with that being said, I would be led to believe that is why ours has a not so good looking leaf. What I did find informative and wasn't sure about was the lighting. With a lot of plants with thinner leaves they are more prone to leaf burn/crispy leaves per say. We have one underneath our coffee table and it receives indirect light and more of the afternoon/late evening sun. The other Begonia is in our bathroom above our tub on a rack and our bathroom has a skylight. That plant loves it there. It did get a bit top heavy because that particular Begonia has rather large reddish leaves and we repotted it. Has done amazingly well too. Haven't propagated these plants as of yet, but will definitely be doing this in the very near future and selling to other like minded people who love plants. Great video, very imformative, and keep the great content coming.
You mentioned grey spots = fungus & we should use a fungicide. Do you have a fungicide recipe? Recently found u (u deserve more subs!!!) & have been binging ur videos, did I miss that 1? This video was so incredibly helpful & informative! Thank you.
I just use a store bought one as I find it works best. This is the store bought one I use: Bonide Captain Jack's Copper Fungicide, 32 oz Ready-to-Use Spray for Organic Gardening, Controls Common Diseases a.co/d/2RtK4u9
I’m finding myself searching my plant questions looking for your input. I feel like I have a TON of questions and I have a hard time finding the answer and you ALWAYS come through! My plants are doing so much better since I started watching your channel. Is there a way to submit very specific questions, so maybe you can do a video on it if there are a lot of people asking similar questions?
Thanks for this detailed video. I got one 2weeks ago after a long thinking, coz last year I got 2 so beautiful rex begonia which were thriving in winter and spring, but once summer started they died back dramatically.. 😢. The leaves were dry and crispy, while the stem of the leaves were kinda lagging and not able to straight up.. was lost between over watering vs under watering.. I will do my best for the new Polka dot princess I got.. Hope it's gonna thrive ❤
Watched the video and immediately subscribed. My Begonia which is now blooming beautiful white flowers also has crispy and dropping leaves. Off to try some of your suggestions.
Before I do any care guide video I do research to see what you guys are finding when you’re trying to research care for a specific plant, and there is SOOOOOOO much bad information out there on how to care for this plant that I was super shocked!! Like way more bad info than any other plant I’ve done a care guide video for before. Good news is this plant is such a prolific grower that it isn’t too, too difficult to turn things around.
My begonia maculata has one sad leaf... from the comments, I'm guessing it's underwatered and needs more light. It's already in a south-facing window, but I have a double window in another room facing south as well that is much brighter! I only use filtered water, and now know not to repot it yet 😂
Watching this video and subscribed! How did you read my mind about trouble shooting this plant!! Thank you!! It seems there’s so much misinformation? out there regarding humidity and light about this plant… Mine also has an issue of growing only horizontally, so come spring, might be time to use some vertical supports or at least prune it…. 🤔
I'm using a bottom feeding planter. And my plant really started to flourish. I got them from Amazon they have clear bottoms where you pour the water with strings that hang into the water so it can drink. I used those bottom feeder planters on mostly all of my plants. The are like 20 for 5 hard plastic pots. I would highly recommend them because I also have hanging plants in them and the most weight is from the water in the pot rather than heavy ceramic pots. I also like that you can see the roots in the clear bottom part of the pot. So I can tell if my plant needs to be repotted if the roots have grown alot through the holes in the top part to the bottom part where the water goes
I’ve severely neglected mine in terms of watering as much as it needs it & I didn’t have a pole to support the heaviness. Now that im repotting & properly educated on how to care for it what do you recommend i do since its lost so many leaves & somewhat bare?
Thank you for the Indepth information, I have been so worried about my begonia. It is really huge, really approximately 3 times the size of your mother plant. The leaves are nice and crispy with no brown tips however, I am noticing more space between some of the leaves on some of the branches. I need to propagate it but because it is so huge (tall), I am wondering if I cut off a large portion of the plant, will I kill it. It is nearly touching the ceiling and the original stems that are actually in the soil have no leaves but many, many shoots. The plant has been in our family for over 40 years (a piece was gifted to me) so, I do not want to lose it. It has both a southern and western exposure. I've noticed that I do not get the beautiful pink flowers anymore. Any advice on what I should do with this precious plant? Thanks you.
You can definitely cut it back, I just wouldn't cut back more than a 1/3 of the plant to start with. Once you cut it back often times new leaves will start to develop further down the stem. Mine actually just started pushing two new branches out from the base after I cut it back about a 1/3 of the way.
You gave a lot of good information I just bought one from Walmart it’s a Costa Farm plant my question is would it do ok in a hanging basket ? Would it look less leggy ? Thank you
Cane like begonias grow too fast and to talk to really work well in a hanging basket. Think like how bamboo grows in the wild. That’s the best example I can give for how cane begonia grow. Rex Begonia on the other hand can be grown in hanging baskets.
Thank you for making this video. My begonia maculata plant is browning in the stem from the top down. The top of the stem then dries out and breaks off. Any advice?
Drea I need help! I've watched a bunch of videos and can't find any help for my begonia maculata problem. A couple of days ago I noticed a browning/yellowing patch AT THE CENTRE of the leaf, by the stem (nothing on the tips). It didn't look dry at all but it made the leaf see-through and vain-y, especially against the light. Yesterday the centre of the patch dried out and is now fully brown, front and back. Then I noticed the same starting on another leaf so I panicked and cut them both off. The soil was only houseplant soil so wasn't draining well, so I repotted to add perlite in case of overwatering but I'm worried that it's progressing fast :( It sits on a windowsill in the living room and gets bright indirect light half the day. Hopefully you have an idea and can help (shame we can't post photos). Thanks for all the great info on everything else :)
So weird I’ve been having such trouble with mine but I found mine likes dryer soil. Whenever I do add more water mine starts to yellow. I do live in Florida too but since I’ve started treating this plant like an orchid with less watering it’s blown up so much.
I haven't had ANY of the issues you described. 😕 Especially crispy leaves. In fact, one of my leaves just started turning brownish and transparent on the side. Perhaps I have watered it too much? Or because I have hard water, it doesn't like that?
OMG! Did I forget to mention anything about soil type in the video 🤦♀️? I can’t believe I didn’t talk about that 😣. I use what I call my basic mix. It’s a premium potting soil I get at my local plant store and I mix 5 parts of that with one part perlite. The plant store is called Calloway’s and it’s their brand but you can see what’s in it by looking at the picture of the back of the bag here: www.calloways.com/calloways-organic-container-potting-soil/
I’ve had my begonia for a year now - it’s super happy and the branches are really beginning to grow outwards maybe tooo much so I’m thinking I need to stake it to encourage the two biggest branches to go up. Any tips????
I am constantly having to stake mine, so yes, go for it. As it matures though the newer branches should come in thicker and sturdier to the point where you won’t need to stake it but it’ll be a while before that happens.
Thanks for the video! By any chance, any idea what it means when the begonia just drops a perfectly healthy looking leaf? Because mine is doing exactly that and I have no clue why... Also, it doesn't grow very much. Can it be hunger for some fertilizer? As it's winter and she doesn't grow, I give her only water.
Have you checked to see if there’s fabric around the roots? If there is, try to carefully remove it. If the roots still look healthy then should be able to bounce back. If not, then I’d try propagating the stem.
First of all the polka dot is very expensive. I pay $20 ,at Walmart, small one. Is beautiful I have my infront of the window I water every Sunday, the other day 4 leaves fell down I do not know what to do I don't see she has grown much since I bought it. Do u think I should repotted to a medium pot????
Is a leaf or two with a hole or split a problem? Should I cut them off? Loads of new leaves are growing all over the plant. It's doubled in size in 3-4 months. I did repot it a few says after we got it home as it was dry and the pot it was in didn't have much soil in it. It turned out to be root bound too. I have it near an East facing window, in a self watering pot. I check the soil for dampness every 5-7 days and fill the ressevour as needed. A few of the original leaves have brown tips and edges, this isn't going way, but there aren't any new ones. One stem sna[[ed of so I set it in water and roots grew, I left it for 2-3 weeks and when there was a good bunch of roots I potted it uo into a 4" pot with cocoa fiber and watered it when the top started to dry. Seemed fine, but didn't survive. Any suggestions, before I try it again, on purpose?
Holes and splits are nothing to worry about. I just use 4 parts premium potting soil and 1 part perlite after rooting my propagations in water and I water them when the soil has dried about 1/4-1/3 of the way out and they’ve all done fine for me. Hope this helps💚
When cutting to propagate, how many nodes need to be in water? And is there a certain amount of leaves or nodes that should be out of the water? Hope that question makes sense! Thank you!
Just one node needs to be in the water and preferably one node out of the water. Don’t have to have leaves as long as there’s an active growth point on the node.
So my grandson threw a ball and the pot tipped over and it totally chopped off the top of my plant. I put the top part that got chopped off as it hit the ground in water and it started rooting. Even tgiugh it was chopped on accident. Lol I've actually shared my propagated piece. And now the original plant which was given to me from a friend from her propagated plant is now 4 ft tall. Leaves grew from chopped top part. But it's kind of weird because the 4 ft plant has about 3 to 4 inches apart from each wing. But the 2 plants growing from each side of the tall one has leaves/wings close to eachother on the stem. So I don't know why that is happening. But you've given me lots of great information. So I will continue to share the love now that I know how to properly propate these angel wings. I've also used plant sticks to prop up the stems closer to the main stem so they don't hang over. So that may help some people who have a plant that is toppling over. I also think that direct East light has burnt a few of my leaves. Because they looked like they were burnt compared to the ones that were light colored and dry when I wasn't watering it properly. So I just pulled those leaves off so the rest of the plant can get the energy. Thanks for all the great information you answered alot of my questions & the information was thought provoking.
What advice could you give on curling leaves because the one I bought doesn't have crispy leaves but the leaves are very curly and twisted. I can't get the leaves flat like most begonias I see
@AlohaPlantLife I've noticed the leaves flatten out a bit, I was giving it TOO much intense indirect light, who knew lol! It was about 2ft from a filtered south facing window and I thought it'd be a happy place but obviously not. I also noticed my epipremnum pinnatum growing stems with no leaves constantly and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong, I moved it across the room and can tell it's relieved, it was right next to the begonia!
You could use either my basic mix or my forest floor mix. Here’s a video on all my soil mixes: The Perfect Soil by Plant Type | Custom Soil Mix | Houseplant Soil Mix ua-cam.com/video/k9B8jNsYzjw/v-deo.html
My begonia is very leggy. It is 1 long 6ft stem. Can I clip some off the very top to see how that goes and if it works can I clip a little further down? I’m wanting it to be more bushy. Can I plant the new babies in the same pot as the mother plant?
Mine is starting to look really bad 😢 looks leggy and I evhave dead stems 😢I think it’s because I now have a window unit in the window where it sits and my violets are all at this window because it’s the best window but now this window unit may be causing issues with my plants 😢violets still look good but not my begonia, never seen it this bad before and it’s the mother plant 🪴 I haven’t repotted it in years..should I do this?
What am I doing wrong if the leaves are getting brown/crispy spots whilst it is still propagating in water? It’s not getting direct light at all. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Hi, so you could use either my basic soil mix or my forest floor soil mix. I currently have mine in the forest floor mix. Here’s the video that shows what’s in each mix: The Perfect Soil by Plant Type | Custom Soil Mix | Houseplant Soil Mix ua-cam.com/video/k9B8jNsYzjw/v-deo.html
I just bought my 4th one. Previous 3 died slowly. I have about 70 plants but cannot grow this one. Help me. Fyi. I have grow lights, humidifier and humidity trays. I will say I did not have the previous 3 on a humidity tray.
Check if it has a fabric plug around the roots and carefully cut the fabric off. Most of the ones I’ve currently seen on the market have fabric plugs and they end up killing the plant.
I got a begonia maculata cutting as a bonus on a plant purchase and I am TERRIFIED. I love the look of begonia, but they have a reputation for dying and i don't want to go through that heartbreak lmao. I've got a nice spot for it and I'll do my best, but only time will tell.
They aren’t particularly prized for their flowers so that’s why I didn’t cover it. Mine has never flowered but a propagation of mine that I gave my friend has flowered once. We care for the plant the exact same way so who knows why her’s chose to flower
Have you checked to see if the plant was grown from a plug? I’m finding more and more people are losing these plants because they were grown from fabric encased plugs and that fabric is choking out the roots. If it was grown from a plug then carefully remove as much of the fabric around the roots as possible.
Watching this because I decided to pick one up yesterday at Lowe's lol. People give the "let it dry out COMPLETELY" advice for hoya, too, and I killed so many cuttings listening to that terrible advice. They do best when I water about once a week.
You explain everything so clearly & thoroughly. I really appreciate all the plant info😊thanks
My pleasure 😊

I take there hidden in The soil

@@jessicapetrin1655 I should also note that it neutralizes heavy metals which are likely not appreciated by plants.

I just use a store bought one as I find it works best. This is the store bought one I use: Bonide Captain Jack's Copper Fungicide, 32 oz Ready-to-Use Spray for Organic Gardening, Controls Common Diseases a.co/d/2RtK4u9
@@AlohaPlantLife Thank you so much!
Sure! You can email them to me at contact@alohaplantlife.com
I have some propagating in water and it LOVES it, it’s got good roots and new leaves. Should I just leave it in water since it’s doing so good?
Thanks for this detailed video.
I got one 2weeks ago after a long thinking, coz last year I got 2 so beautiful rex begonia which were thriving in winter and spring, but once summer started they died back dramatically.. 😢. The leaves were dry and crispy, while the stem of the leaves were kinda lagging and not able to straight up.. was lost between over watering vs under watering..
I will do my best for the new Polka dot princess I got..
Hope it's gonna thrive ❤
Great video. You explain everything so thoroughly. I appreciate that. Thanks!
You're very welcome!💚
This was so informative and very well delivered. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!💚
Watched the video and immediately subscribed. My Begonia which is now blooming beautiful white flowers also has crispy and dropping leaves. Off to try some of your suggestions.
Thank you!💚
What a helpful vid--just got this plant from Big Box abuse--hoping to transition it to a happy healthy plant!
Very informative 👏. Thanks for sharing this video I.I really appreciate it 👍.
You’re welcome💚
O.k. I think I was doing everything wrong....lol...Thank you for the video and always replying to comments.
First video I've seen of yours, I love it, subscribe! :)
Welcome to the planty fam!💚
Yahoo...this us the one I was waiting for
I was waiting for a comment from you, lol! Hope it was helpful 💚
Glad I could help!💚
Yours looks healthy n pretty
What do you think about self watering planters for these guys? And just top watering with fertilizer?
That could work
I'm using a bottom feeding planter.
@@LatishaBlayne Send me the link to them on Amazon please
Thank you thank you thank you! I think k you may have very finally demystified this plant for me!
Glad I could be of help!💚
I’ve severely neglected mine in terms of watering as much as it needs it & I didn’t have a pole to support the heaviness. Now that im repotting & properly educated on how to care for it what do you recommend i do since its lost so many leaves & somewhat bare?
If you cannot afford purified water, you can TECHNICALLY still use tap… but it needs to sit for 3-4 days before using. ❤️
I found your video so helpful. I was wondering if a self watering pot would be okay for this plant?
Yes, absolutely💚
Great content.
@@AlohaPlantLife thank you
Thank you for making this video. My begonia maculata plant is browning in the stem from the top down. The top of the stem then dries out and breaks off. Any advice?
Hmm….. I haven’t experienced that before…..are you on Instagram or Facebook? If so, could you send me some pics? @alohaplantlife
I have found that clustering plants together helps increase the humidity!
Thank for the tips ❤
No problem!!💚
That was spot on! Thank you!
You are so welcome!💚
Thank you for all that info
You’re welcome!💚
Amazing video. One of my begonia leaves is turning yellow which according to google means that I'm overwatering it, is this true?
Lots of things can cause leaves to turn yellow, so it’s hard to say without seeing it and knowing your conditions💚
Which video would apply to begonia ferox? I don't believe it's a "cane" begonia. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Unfortunately, I don’t have a video on non-cane begonia because I have never owned a non-cane begonia
Love from Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Drea I need help! I've watched a bunch of videos and can't find any help for my begonia maculata problem. A couple of days ago I noticed a browning/yellowing patch AT THE CENTRE of the leaf, by the stem (nothing on the tips). It didn't look dry at all but it made the leaf see-through and vain-y, especially against the light. Yesterday the centre of the patch dried out and is now fully brown, front and back. Then I noticed the same starting on another leaf so I panicked and cut them both off.
The soil was only houseplant soil so wasn't draining well, so I repotted to add perlite in case of overwatering but I'm worried that it's progressing fast :(
It sits on a windowsill in the living room and gets bright indirect light half the day.
Hopefully you have an idea and can help (shame we can't post photos).
Thanks for all the great info on everything else :)
Can you send me photos on facebook or instagram @alohaplantlife?
Thank you Drea!! :) I've sent an invitation to message on Instagram ❤
Very well done, thanks!
You’re welcome💚
So weird I’ve been having such trouble with mine but I found mine likes dryer soil. Whenever I do add more water mine starts to yellow. I do live in Florida too but since I’ve started treating this plant like an orchid with less watering it’s blown up so much.
I haven't had ANY of the issues you described. 😕 Especially crispy leaves. In fact, one of my leaves just started turning brownish and transparent on the side. Perhaps I have watered it too much? Or because I have hard water, it doesn't like that?
I'm sorry, what type of soil did you suggest? And where did you buy it? Thanks so much!
Did you check to make sure it doesn’t have a fabric plug around the roots?
Gm edagdwg love this special plant enjoy seeing it grow thank you for sharing this showy plant Linda j. Peace
Super helpful, thank you!
You're welcome!
I got one in a six inch pot it seemed to be doing well then it started dropping healthy leaves now I just have a stem that I water.
Have you checked to see if there’s fabric around the roots? If there is, try to carefully remove it. If the roots still look healthy then should be able to bounce back. If not, then I’d try propagating the stem.
@Aloha Plant Life thank you so much I'll look for the fabric wrap.
Hello! I just purchased one of these and it has quite a few brown crispy leaves can I just cut them off? Or cut at the steam?
Yes, you can cut them off if they are bothering you or just wait for them to fall off on their own
@@AlohaPlantLife Ok, thanks
First of all the polka dot is very expensive. I pay $20 ,at Walmart, small one. Is beautiful I have my infront of the window I water every Sunday, the other day 4 leaves fell down I do not know what to do I don't see she has grown much since I bought it. Do u think I should repotted to a medium pot????
Have you checked to see if there’s a fabric plug around its roots?
@@AlohaPlantLife thank you! Going to do that now!!
So my grandson threw a ball and the pot tipped over and it totally chopped off the top of my plant. I put the top part that got chopped off as it hit the ground in water and it started rooting. Even tgiugh it was chopped on accident. Lol
I've actually shared my propagated piece.
I can't get the leaves flat like most begonias I see
Are you on Instagram? If so, could you send me a pic of the leaves? @alohaplantlife
@@HelicopterPLArent So glad you were able to figure it out💚
I planted mine in a dryceana pot for support so the trunk can support the begonia.
What is the potting mix please
You could use either my basic mix or my forest floor mix. Here’s a video on all my soil mixes: The Perfect Soil by Plant Type | Custom Soil Mix | Houseplant Soil Mix

My begonia is very leggy. It is 1 long 6ft stem. Can I clip some off the very top to see how that goes and if it works can I clip a little further down? I’m wanting it to be more bushy. Can I plant the new babies in the same pot as the mother plant?
Yes, yes, and yes. It probably wants a little more light too than you’re currently giving it if it’s not branching on its own.
Mine keeps dropping healthy leaves all the time and I just do not understand why! 😢
Same here😢
Do they do ok with grow lights? And if so do they do better on the purple light setting or plain white setting?
I put my propagations in my IKEA greenhouse cabinet and they’ve done fine with those grow lights which are white.
@@AlohaPlantLife thank you soooo much. I just got mine and I really don’t want it to die it’s my new princess lol
I would slip it out of its pot and see if it’s root bound if it is then yes repot it
What am I doing wrong if the leaves are getting brown/crispy spots whilst it is still propagating in water? It’s not getting direct light at all. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
How long has it been in water and does it have any roots yet?
Hi, can you please repeat the mix of potting soil? Thank you!!
Hi, so you could use either my basic soil mix or my forest floor soil mix. I currently have mine in the forest floor mix. Here’s the video that shows what’s in each mix: The Perfect Soil by Plant Type | Custom Soil Mix | Houseplant Soil Mix
ua-cam.com/video/k9B8jNsYzjw/v-deo.html
Can I cut off the brown crispy leaves? If so where should I cut them?
Yes, just make sure you don’t cut into the healthy tissue, only cut through the brown tissue or else it will spread upward.
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
My leaves are curling upward. They’re still green, just curling :(. What do I do?
You are great . Love that plant and you explain everything so good. I do want to mention you shake a lot , are you ok?
I have a condition called essential tremors. Nothing serious, just more of a nuisance than anything
My leaves are very droopy and limp but have new growth on stems And it is very leggy any suggestions
Have you checked the roots to make sure there wasn’t a fabric plug around the roots?
How long does it take , for the pork dots to-show, those are new leaves the no poke a dots , o leav
They should be there immediately unless it’s a different kind of begonia
Has anyone used terracotta spikes on these?
Mine has barely any white spots?
This is the first time I’ve heard anyone have this problem with this plant. Do you have instagram and, if so, can you DM me a pic of it please?
I got a begonia maculata cutting as a bonus on a plant purchase and I am TERRIFIED. I love the look of begonia, but they have a reputation for dying and i don't want to go through that heartbreak lmao. I've got a nice spot for it and I'll do my best, but only time will tell.
You didn’t really cover blooming and that’s my issue. It used to bloom prolifically and now it doesn’t. Any ideas?
They aren’t particularly prized for their flowers so that’s why I didn’t cover it. Mine has never flowered but a propagation of mine that I gave my friend has flowered once. We care for the plant the exact same way so who knows why her’s chose to flower
Anyone know what to do if ALL my leaves dropped?
What kind of light do you have it in?
Mine is still tiny and only has one leaf. I’ve been struggling with it for 18 months 😭
...I didn't catch what soil you use??
What kind of soil?
My basic mix will work fine for it which is 5 parts premium potting soil to 1 part perlite or pumice.
This plant is making me crazy. I basically tried everything and it seems to just be slowly dying :(
Your not alone 😂😂
Have you checked to see if the plant was grown from a plug? I’m finding more and more people are losing these plants because they were grown from fabric encased plugs and that fabric is choking out the roots. If it was grown from a plug then carefully remove as much of the fabric around the roots as possible.
Watching this because I decided to pick one up yesterday at Lowe's lol. People give the "let it dry out COMPLETELY" advice for hoya, too, and I killed so many cuttings listening to that terrible advice. They do best when I water about once a week.
