I just rescued my very first one from my local supermarket, the poor thing was not taken care of as half of the leaves on it were dead and it looked beat up as hell. I decided to see if I could save it so I took it home, trimmed off the dead leaves and browned edges, gave it plenty of water and it's thriving now! In only 4 days it's already sprouted 4 new heads, maybe I just got lucky and ended up getting an easy going one but so far this plant hasn't given me any issues.
I'm in zone 9b in the San Francisco north bay area. A friend from Fort Bragg gave me a cutting from her houseplant in Oct 2023. The cutting is now (July 2024) a 2.5 ft plant, climbing a tripod made with bamboo sticks. I use leather string to tie the begonia's trunk to the bamboo . The leaves are large, dark green with silvery spots. The plant is at a north facing window, getting only indirect sun. Once in a while, the pot is rotated to give other leaves a chance to face the window. I water once a week, using rice water or just plain water. At the base of my beloved begonia sits a young dark buddha figurine that my best friend in Iran had handmade for me. The little boy sits inside a lotus. So, begonia, buddha and I are a triangular team, enjoying each other's company while I sip tea in my favorite living room chair. Cheers
I straight love my spotted begonia I had never had one before never even seen one before and I ordered two mediums got six small ones gave three to my best friend cuz we're doing plank collections together and the video was very helpful on what to do with them
I just got a begonia maculata from Lowes Clearance . It was soo dried out, has fungus gnats, and falling leaves. I repotted it in a pretty airy mix, added perlite and peat moss, and gave it a good soak with a diluted 1/4 hydrogen peroxide + filtered water solution. Hopefully it makes it through!
@@datlaichelle2736 it's doing well now! It had a ton of leaf fall, but after a few more rounds of treating the gnats, it started to grow back and is happy and polka dotty now.
@@reshmaanand1889 you can find it at local pharmacies for very cheap, usually in the first aid section by isopropyl alcohol. Make sure to dilute it for your plants, or their roots can get chemical burns.
Thankyou so much, I inherited alot of houseplants from a neighbor who moved overseas and I got one Polka Dot Begonia. It has one stem thats just gone crazy long and I had NO IDEA what to do lol.

I finally purchased this one. I own 3 other begonias that look like this; 2 smaller and 1 larger in the leaves. Two of them live in the biOrb; 1 is in the kitchen, and this one lives in the living room in my old school green house from Ikea. It is growing nicely, though not as nice as yours. It does grow quickly and I need to move it b/c it has reached the top of the shelf above it, which I just removed it. This is a great plant to me!

By the way... another great video! Really appreciate your quality of video. It makes watching that much more enjoyable.
Thanks Charlene, it really is a great plant and quite easy compared to some other Begonias :) I looked up what a biOrb was and wow that thing is so cool looking. Definitely added to my wishlist of planty things!
I bought a little maculata in a tiny nursery pot that I've had for weeks waiting to be transplanted. I feel guilty that I haven't given it attention but I bought all the soils I want to mix for my new plants and as I started repotting them from their nursery pots I noticed the soils I bought aren't good. They are supposed to be well draining but they're not. As I'm out in the country, it's more than an hour away to get different soils so I don't run to those type stores every day. Anyway, my maculata has sat in my sun room upstairs and I have barely watered it waiting to get new soils which my husband is getting as I type. I paused this video just to run up and check on it and it's sitting there looking way better than it did when we bought it and it has a new leaf that's just opening up! I'd say this is an easy care plant so far. I live in a cold snowy climate and I'll have to see how it will do with a Northern winter before I make cuttings and invest more time in this begonia. Otherwise I love everything about this plant - especially the polka dots!!! Don't be afraid to try this one imho 😁🤓
Funny how some plants do better if we leave them alone! I wouldn't put this one in the same category as snake plants or ZZ plants in terms of ease of care but it is surprisingly easy to care for, especially compared to some other begonias! Thanks for your input Denise :)
Beautiful begonia, I'm scared to try this variety though, maybe one day when I become more skilled plant person😊 great video, informative, I'll watch it again when I buy her one day just in case🤣🌱✳️
Thank you for putting this great video up. I have just bought one of these plants. Is it ok to take cutting now, end of August, or do I wait for Spring? Thanks for your help with this.
Yes you can! It might be difficult to propagate in the dead of winter, depending on where you live but I think if you cut and root them right now you should be good! That way you should have a new plant with healthy roots by the time winter rolls around.
I bought 2 plants and I cut the tips off so I can get a bushy plant .I have now 8 plants and they are growing like weeds. I keep them in the bathroom with 3 daylight bulbs and watering and misting with temp 70-78.
Hi. Thanks for the advice. Will help me alot. I had a lovely healthy plant when I bought it. Leaves all but three dropped off. Now I have one very long stem which grew a leaf in the summer which then also fell off a few weeks after. The new fallen leaf is now in water and has roots about an inch almost. Can it grow in water indefinatly or is it better to plant into soil? Also what did I do to make the leaves fall off so rapidly. My humidity in the summer is between around 70-80.Im in the UK. Watered when dry. Was about two to three feet inside my east facing window.Love your Vidio.Just found you and is just perfect for advice.I like that it is about one plant in particular and not general advice about one genus of plants. It's a more targeted care advice Vidio which is ideal. Thanks so much. SARAH
You have a number of cuttings now, rooting in water? If and when you pot up those cuttings, maybe a video about how you do it - a few cuttings in one pot for a bushier baby, or a few separate one-cane wonders?
Yes! Great idea, I've already noticed the smallest of roots forming on these cuttings already so maybe that video will happen sooner rather than later. Thank you!
Hey! I really enjoyed this video! I own this plant and im starting to get dry tips! I put the plant in my bathroom so when i shower the humidity is high. Also the window is a south facing window and the plant is pretty far from it. Do you have any recommendations? I really need some help

I don't find these to be common at all (At least in Southern California). I couldn't find one so eventually I just ordered it online. I wish I could have found one at a nursery.
they are not from the jungle, but from the central part of brasil, near to Rio de Janeiro :) That's my favorite plant ever, sad to know you can almost not find them anymore here in Brazil in their natural habitat.
Good to know! Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read online ;) Thanks for the correction, I really strive to be as accurate as possible so I appreciate this, thanks Kelly!
Mine only grows leaves at the very top, I literally can't trim her and she's growing like a tree 😒 I've only had flowers 8 or 9 years ago. I don't know what to do

Tried it and in love with it. I was afraid too but they are easier than expected.

Beautiful begonia. Thanks for the info.
What do you use to fertilize it?
Any idea why the stems would droop down like it’s too weak to hold it?
Thank you .
Can you talk about what kind of substrate is best for cane begonias

These are terrestrial plants. They can grow in an aquarium that’s being used closed off to increase humidity, but not with water or fish in it.

My begonia’s leaves are falling down.. i am understanding the reason
Yes, maybe over or underwatered! I hope it improves for you!
Its almost died.. i can only see little green stem. Please give me tip to save
nice video but i would loose the music
Also I just put it in soil after I broke the stem
Don’t mist the leaves, it’s prone to fungus
Is it poisonous to cats ?
