Really great tutorial. I have an idea to convert an old farm in Denmark to a community & business centre, and I think I might try doing something like this as a baseline ...
As someone who has always procrastinated on truly absorbing 3D workflows, it was retopolization and corresponding UV map stuff that always felt like it was just an astronomical workflow to undertake. I feel like UE5's Nanite is one of the biggest gamechangers ever for high-detail 3d workflows. So amazing.
2:55 For people who aren't going to use a tripod and are newer to photography, I personally recommend a minimum of 1/125 for your shutter speed no matter what (unless you're going above 60mm). It's the slowest you can really go without having to worry at all about having motion blur from your hands shaking.
I suppose it really depends on how stable you can hold your camera! Personally i think 1/125 is overkill at 24mm, BUT you’re not wrong. Faster IS better for this kind of work, provided you have enough light!
By importing such a large model at the first step, you have pushed this app to its limits :))) Pixels will be the future with the emergence of UE. Do you need an extremely powerful computer to run this application or is the analysis done on the server?
This was great, and I wonder how simple it could be using a phone camera. I suppose the quality of the textures wouldn't be nearly as pristine, but certainly helps with homebrew assets and workflow.

This tutorial is like a Christmas gift! It is amazing what we can achieve nowadays with technology. I have one question... Does RC recognize a video format besides photos? Because you can hoover around a building with a drone and get as many frames as you want. Thank you!
I think it supports video but I wouldn't recommend it. You CAN do it but video in 4k is only 12 megapixels. Pretty low resolution. You'll also get motion blur in videos, and compression. You don't want that.
The texture is 40k x 8k, is it possible to reduce it at 4k for the whole asset ? I wonder what would be the quality here in that case. Anyway amazing video as always William. Love the result! I'm getting reality scan, hope to dive into scan soon enough
well that Reality Capture Software seems to be a bit more complex but still easier to handle then the Mesh Room Software i'm using right now...think i'm gonna give it a try. :) thanks for the Video man. :) great tutorial. :)
I was provided a license but I believe this would cost about 20$. Bear in mind it’s a HUGE asset, 6x10m, and you are charged by megapixel used. So 1600x24mp. Smaller models wouldn’t cost nearly this amount.

Thank you for this! Is there a way to delight in Reality Capture? Lets say you scan a tunnel in the metro and you need to get rid of the spotlight data in the albedo.
Would love to hear your thoughts on an effective method for shooting interior spaces. I'm thinking the 1st layer would be a series of 360 panoramas (shot with a fisheye lens and a nodal ninja), from various locations, followed by a 2nd layer which would be all the closer up shots, getting in to all the gaps that are occluded by furnishings, etc. The problem would be the necessity of using a tripod for slower shutter speed shots due to low light. Depending on the interior space, using a tripod to get in, above, and around furnishings might be incredibly difficult though.
That's actually a great question. Sounds tricky for sure. Ideally it would help to have an empty room void of furniture for the most part. Then scan individual props separately. You don't want to scan the whole thing in one go. Modularity is key.
@@WilliamFaucher I can see the logic in that, but it might not always be practical, or even possible to do everything separately, particularly if its an already fully furnished environment.

Great, do you think the next solution for pushing forward the industry with great texture results it will be especially for huge games with huge bugets to make real life props, scaning and then a little 3d work ( this is where the 3d artist skills and experience appear) and we have unique and great 3d models? Instead of trying to make some realness from 3d software, some kind of realness from megascans...So we can have in the near future an industry where the traditional craftman and 3d artist can make a good living from theyr passion and job? I think now it can be like this but at a small scale, but in the near future, this nanite will make possible that scenario that i've already mentioned? Thank you!
12:44 thats a big error, about lens correction. You definitely want to use it in my experience :) What you do not want to do, is allow the lens correction to adjust disortion, that part is correct and you avoid it by pulling disortion slider back to left side (0). Why use it at all? for vingetting. proper Lens profile removes it really well and that has huge effect on alignment. Parts that had were different due to vingetting will now match on a lot more photos. And ofc chromatic aberrations, unless you have super expensive lens, there probably will be some and that affects both mesh generation and textures.
Hi there, thanks for chiming in! Depending on your lens, when you stop down so much to f8 and more, vignetting and chromatic aberration tends to disappear, or at least it’s substantially reduced. They mostly show up when you are shooting wide-open on a fast lens. I was in talks with CapturingReality themselves and they didn’t deem it necessary to bring up in the video :) I’m not saying you’re wrong, because it does make sense, and if it works for you, great! But I think for the average beginner it’s not entirely necessary to get started.
Just curious. Have you attempted to use reality capture to capture a whole interior space using a camera? I feel like a lidar scanner like a Leica might be a better solution for this, but I'm trying to find a workflow to do this with just a camera. Do you think doing 2 concentric circles in a room from varying heights, while reversing the direction I'm facing in the room, to capture all detail would be a solution while adding varying parallax as I get closer to an object might be a solution? Then just maybe setting a lot of control points via brightly colored tracking markers I have set around said room? I have used poly cam but the results aren't up to par with reality capture. My end goal is to import a scan into Unreal engine to use as a set on an Led volume. Thanks in advance!
William, at the end for the close up of the sign, did you use a smaller section of closeup photos in RealityCaptutre as a new project, use the existing project but higher Tris with cropping or something else like Blender or Maya? Thanks, love the walk through. I've used meshroom but this looked so much more developed and polished.
@@WilliamFaucher Big thanks! Sorry for being clueless again, but can you automate the process so you don't have to fly the drone up, take a picture, fly left, take picture and so on..?

William i need your help! I am 17 years old and need to choose a job. Ue5 is very new so i cant find enough information about it. I want to make 10-30 min type of short films with ue5. Because i want to control all of the things in filmmaking by myself and for free. But i am not sure if i can do that as a job with ue5 and future versions we are going to see. Should i choose another career like coding/programming and do what i said(ue filmmaking) as a hobby because i can not do that as a job? And if i can do it as a job what is the category in university that does that?
I tried this today with a 3 foot tall wooden carving in my yard. I took a ton of photos from every angle, and I did a bunch of close up ones. However when I use all the images, reality capture did not like the closer up shots, and I could ony get it to generate the mesh properly with the shots of the entire object in the frame. What am I missing? You said you took some shots that were almost macro of the building. Why would those work but my close up shots wouldnt? thanks.
It sounds like RC had trouble aligning those images. There's a lot of factors that could cause this and it's hard to troubleshoot over YT without seeing the dataset. Perhaps there wasn't enough overlap between photos?
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I can’t tell you how much you helped me. Can I use my medium format Hasselblad H5D as the camera or is medium format not the right focal length?
@@WilliamFaucher awesome thank you again for your priceless expertise! One of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen. It might be easier with my Nikon 24 mp dslr but will try both. With the hasselblad, I’m hoping I can get the focus right because there’s so much more data.
Was not working for me... But then i noticed that the naming of files out of RC was "my-file.1001_diffuese.png" So the UDIM naming was wrong... After manually changing the names... UE5 saw the sub files... So not sure how to change the file names in RC to reflect correct UDIM naming... Looked to see if there was further export settings but cant find them... Is there something I am missing? Thanks!! Great workflow!!
@@WilliamFaucher That would be great... Not to bad to rename in light room but would be a nice step not to have to do... One thing that has been a bit weird... Is it seems the material editor in UE 5.0.3 works some times... I follow the exact workflow you laid out but on my last scan I have not been able to get the single material to actually apply... It looks like it did but then when i save and close out... my model is still showing the checker board pattern and has one material slot but even if I change it nothing happens... So I tried removing the extra material slots in blender... But I think that put my UV tiling off because when i brought it back in to UE and applied the virtual texture it seems to have a weird tiling... Any thoughts on a good work around? Thanks so much!!
Could you use an 8k video on a drone and convert the video to frames and then use that for this process? would also get lots of overlap... and lots of frames, just a thought not sure if that would work or not. If anyone knows that would be great!
It works but you need the correct amount of shots and overlap between shots. What might help is shooting the two separately and combining the components in RealityCapture!
Yup! The workflow is largely the same regardless of photogrammetry app you use. Each app has its own pros and cons, I've never used Meshroom so I can't vouch for it, RealityCapture is what I know and love to use. But feel free to use whatever you prefer!
Thank you so much for this incredible video!! It has really helped me out :) Quick question, when exporting the FBX, Reality capture has two options (1) Dense Mesh Model and Textures and (2) Dense Mesh as a Level-of-Detail Set. Which one should I choose?
hi william, ive got a question. on your mars live stream how did you get the canyon pack? was it a one click install for the whole thing? I can only download one at a time and when I import them into unreal they're all in separate folders. im using ue5

What about taking pics inside the cabin? I want to go inside! It's cold!
Haha could be a fun challenge!
Awesome tutorial! Will definitely try this out sometime. What tree assets did you use?
Thank you! I used the RealBiomes Scots Pine pack on the marketplace :)
Outstanding
@@WilliamFaucher Thanks for the reply. Il'l try again.
If you took photos from the interior, would that have been modeled too?
You could yes! You might need to combine two separate components in reality capture but it is possible, absolutely.
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I can’t tell you how much you helped me. Can I use my medium format Hasselblad H5D as the camera or is medium format not the right focal length?
Thank you! I don't see why a medium format camera wouldn't work! I bet it would look great. :)
That's a fix in progress that should be coming soon in a new version /patch update of RealityCapture!
Fantastic! Thanks!
Could you use an 8k video on a drone and convert the video to frames and then use that for this process? would also get lots of overlap... and lots of frames, just a thought not sure if that would work or not. If anyone knows that would be great!
Thank you.
does this program not work with modelling interiors of rooms? i tried and it was just a jumbled mess.
It works but you need the correct amount of shots and overlap between shots. What might help is shooting the two separately and combining the components in RealityCapture!
Great info
Wonder if I could do the same project in Meshroom?
Yup! The workflow is largely the same regardless of photogrammetry app you use. Each app has its own pros and cons, I've never used Meshroom so I can't vouch for it, RealityCapture is what I know and love to use. But feel free to use whatever you prefer!
Incredible! May I ask, what kind of time does such a project demand, from the image processing starts to you have the model in UE?
Thank you! It depends on the size of the object you scan. This one here took about a day.
@@WilliamFaucher Thanks for the quick response =)
@@Kallenator1988 cheers, and happy holidays!
@@WilliamFaucher You to mate!
Thank you so much for this incredible video!! It has really helped me out :) Quick question, when exporting the FBX, Reality capture has two options (1) Dense Mesh Model and Textures and (2) Dense Mesh as a Level-of-Detail Set. Which one should I choose?
I guess that depends on whether you want LOD's or not?
@@WilliamFaucher My plan was to use it with Nanite in UE5, so I imagine I don't need LODs. Which version did you use in this video?
@@francisghersci6890 Nope! No need for lods then! I used ue5
Did you took the pictures in Skien(Norway)?
No sir, Gjøvik!
hi william, ive got a question. on your mars live stream how did you get the canyon pack? was it a one click install for the whole thing? I can only download one at a time and when I import them into unreal they're all in separate folders. im using ue5
I used the assets from the UE5 valley of the ancient demo :)
@@WilliamFaucher so did you transfer the mesh or save them?
@@infectioussneeze9099 No I just used that valley of the ancients project for the stream
What landscape material are you using for the ground/snow? Assuming you didn't make it yourself, I rarely see results that look nearly as good with all of the fluffiness and would love to know how you achieved that look.
I made it myself! It's just megascans kitbash :)
@@WilliamFaucher Any insight you could give on how you actually went about making it? A video maybe even? Snow has always been something that I see artists avoid because it’s so incredibly difficult to get looking good.
