Not that this wasn't a good live performance. But one of the things with Supertramp, and especially that album Breakfast In America, is the production on the songs is really really good. And there's a lot of little things with this song that they didn't recreate live. In general, if you haven't heard a song before by an artist or band, you should always do the album version first. Unless most people tell you that the live version is the way to go, the studio version should really be your first listen to get a feel for the song and the band.

They started as progressive rock, at this point in their career and this song, it's more pop rock. With lots of extras, like the horns & whistles. Crime of the Century is a "desert island" album, one of those with no bad songs. Listen to it in order, starting with School, followed by Bloody Well Right, and the rest. (Yes, Roger really did NOT appreciate being sent away to school.)

@@christinerobinson9372 People think of "Crime of the Century" as their first album, and it was their first BIG album, with their "classic" band lineup, but they had two prior. A self-titled one, and Indelibly Stamped. "Crime" is a perfect gem; the prior two have some good songs but are a bit uneven.
I discovered them as a wee teen, when my sister & her hubs went to see Pink Floyd, and Supertramp was their opening act. I recommend listening to them the way we did, back in the day; the entire first side, a pause, then the second side. Sooo good with headphones.

In 1974 Supertramp released an album that should easily be in 90% of 70's music lovers top ten desert island albums. It should be listened to front to back, much like most Pink Floyd and Zeppelin albums. If you don't agree with me then that might be the crime of the century. Asia and BJ, you guys are all right. I wonder if the lack of knowledge amongst American reactors is down to the way their radio stations operate.
As a Brit, we used to have a main pop station, and others doing bits of evergreens, cookery chat etc, plus of course offshore 'pirate' radio.
That meant we heard current hits frequently but also some older stuff mixed in now and then, so almost everyone grew up having heard the names of artists from 1950's onwards plus their biggest hits

I'd be surprised if you haven't heard their song 'Dreamer' in the past. It was their break out hit in the UK and several other countries and though the studio version didn't really impact on USA the live version did about five years later. Some bands defy genre labelling, e.g. Queen, ELO, 10CC and so on, and Supertramp are in that group, though they were definitely a prog rock band at the start they evolved over time into a prog pop band. Pick anything from them and you won't be disappointed.

Whenever I listen to Supertramp, I'm reminded of being 15 years old when my younger brother and I broke the windows of my mother's closets, listening to "Dreamer" at full volume. I don't think she ever forgot either.

the whole "Live in Paris" album is just great.....for the longest time the footage of this concert was lost...only recently discovered that you can see some 'videos' of this concert like this one....
other 'well known' songs on there are "Breakfast in America", "School", "Dreamer", "Bloody well right", "Take the long way home" and "Crime of the century"....

If I had to pick a genre to describe Supertramp, I'd say they are Progressive Rock/Pop. Very unique sound and they have a lot of amazing songs! Please react to their hit "Bloody Well Right" next. 😎 Here is the remastered version from the Deluxe edition of their Crime of the Century album: ua-cam.com/video/-YAMbLHcS-8/v-deo.html You won't regret it! This song rocks and has more of that great sax! 🎶🎷

Try listening to "Take the Long Way Home" or "Goodbye Stranger" (the studio versions) by Supertramp. You'll love them!

No doubt you probably heard it, Asia. It was a big hit. Their other hits include Give A Little Bit, Goodbye Stranger, Take The Long Way Home, Dreamer, and Breakfast In America.

Hi Asia & BJ, I`ve always loved this song, glad you liked it. You should also checkout (Little Boxes) by Malvina Reynolds in 1962, it`s along similar lines, IMO. :)
