We have all been conditioned and moulded by society to think a certain way and be a certain way. I think this song makes you question societies rules and regulations and makes you ask the question 'who is the real me?' If I hadn't conformed to societies rules, what would my true nature be?

It makes me think about how quickly the entire world would fall apart, with everybody dying from starvation or exposure, if people followed a desire to remain children for their entire lives.

I've mentioned this before on a ton of other reactors channels.
The "Breafast in America" tour by Supertramp is still my #3 top concert out of the 1041 concerts I've attended since 1973.
They sounded just like the studio versions of their songs, just perfect.
    Such an underrated band.

    One of my all-time favorites!
Check out the whole ‘Breakfast In America’ album. It’s one of those records you can listen to from beginning to end, then flip it over and listen to it again.

It's so funny that I've heard this song my whole life and never cared for it or listened to the lyrics. With this reaction, I have found an appreciation to this song that I never had before. That's what I love about reaction channels, you hear an old song decades later and enjoy it through fresh ears.

This group was my childhood. I was so fanatical that at one point I could name every track, in order, on every album they put out between '74 - '82. And this is still one of their best! 👍🏽

Great song. Supertramp had a unique sound. No one quite had the same voice. "Crime Of The Century" is their best album imo. Check that one out sometime.
Simple message in this song to me. Dont give up your passion and what uniquely makes you and who YOU are.
Education is important, but dont just think materialistically. Going to school to gain acceptance and a great paying job. But do what truly moves your soul.

Each of us encounters that point in our lives when we see the “world” for what it is……It’s in this moment that we decide to “Toe the line”, or “Cast aside supposed obligations”, and chart a course for ourselves. Because we’re “finite”, we know that neither venture is the rightful answer, but we choose our fate and accept it.

When I was younger in grade school, I thought they were singing about going to a mental ward. Now I know he's singing about school, but I have come to the conclusion they might be the same place at times. Depending on the person and the treatment he or she gets during thier time incarcerated at school...

Ha. I used to fish up in Alaska on a factory trawler processing Surimi. I had a walkman and a Supertramp "Breakfast in America" tape that I would listen to ALL SHIFT or until I had an opportunity to change the tape. The newer walkmans had a flip and repeat, so it would play one side of the tape, then automatically switch to the other side. It would play over and over and over. So watching this reaction made me remember back to early 90s. Supertramp was with me through those hard years. Thanks Supertramp and thanks for playing this one.

I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.

It’s so true. I tried so hard to make it in this world. Trying to do everything just the way society dictated. There was just one problem. I didn’t like the person I was pretending to be. This song always makes me think of all those wasted years trying to fit a mould I wasn’t meant to fit. The moment I decided to hell with it, I’m going to do things my way, my life made sense to me again. It didn’t gain me sudden riches or perfect life but I knew who I was and I could sleep at night knowing succeed or fail, I did it my way and I was ok with that

7:54 The only thing music tells me now vs then, is the fact that back then artists and producers cared about the music, now they only care about making it(artists, if I can call them that!) producers for sure they collect; because music and nowadays artists are just the same as fast food in quality.

BEST CONCERT EVER! Victoria BC, Canada back in the 80s. We were a total of *Only Twelve People* at their arena concert that had 10,000 seats. Thought we were about to see Ted Nugget but marquee displayed an unknown band call SUPERTRAMP. Checked them out anyways and *What Professionals*. Performed like was a sold out show, then encored their entire unreleased *Breakfast in America* album.

They make you learn the most strange and stupid things at school. I hated school, had a lot of fun, but hated the learning. I've been working with my hands my whole life, and not sorry about it. Had a verry good and, most of all, a fun life. There is no excuse for what they teach you, however.

So Supertramp had two lead singer/songwriters, one from an affluent upbringing, the other not. The one singing, Hodgson, is on record as saying he had a very happy childhood, always smiling, full of innocence, protected from the financial difficulties most families face. He went to a private school, on leaving, he saw the world for what it is. This song is about that transition.
Supertramp had an astonishing start and very nearly didn't make it. They had one last chance and it was the album, Crime of the Century that was their breakthrough. The next to albums were not as well received, but it was the one that this track came from that sent them through the stratosphere - Breakfast in America (it was received extremely well the US too).
At their peak, they wrote amazing lyrics set to great tunes, all mastered to perfection. Awesome musician's, this album is regarded as one of the most important rock/progressive rock albums of all-time, and rightly so.
They are one of the greatest UK exports, and I for one feel that my appreciation of music was shaped, in part, by their love for music.
Sadly, groups like this do not exist anymore, perhaps they never will. So listen to their songs, marvel at their talent and remember; good music never ages, it matures like a good wine and just gets better.
To bring prog rock up to date, can I recommend you listen to more Radiohead?

No doubt there are pressures to conform. I was lucky to have had encouragement by my parents to be myself and think for myself, and also an education that focused on critical thinking and investigation into things. So, by the time this song came out, I was a university professor, encouraging my students to think for themselves.

First became aware of Supertramp, 'Crime of the Century' I believe, at a party in the lower Vancouver area, '78, with a dawning appreciation for the songcraft and overall musical excellence involved. A year or so later, this came on the radio back in Toronto, headed for lunch at a co-worker's place. Speaks to you, doesn't it? Good, or even better, great art does. Sorry to hear you also think some things are or may be worse than they were when it came out. May we all have the opportunities to elect much better representatives for our societies, for our collective, long-term interests, for the betterment of the world we hand to our children and grandchildren.
Very much appreciate, btw, your looking up backgrounders on the artists, and the impulse to tackle broader questions and the implications of ideas or questions posed by the songs you explore. All the best, cheers. ;>D

No critical thinking, no figuring it out for yourself. This is the way it's done. This is what we do, how we feel, what we say. It's scary.
