Vocal Coach Reacts To Avenged Sevenfold | Critical Acclaim | Live | Ken Tamplin

- Having recorded their debut album while the band members were still seniors in high school, Avenged Sevenfold is still at it almost a decade later.
The band has come a long way since their early days in Huntington Beach California when they debuted with a more metalcore sound. By their third album the band had evolved into more of a hard rock and heavy metal sound.
Having lost their original drummer James “The Rev” Sullivan in 2009, the band regrouped in time for their fifth album which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
The band has gone on to release 7 studio albums and has sold over 8 million albums worldwide. They have been ranked by Loudwire as one of the Top 50 Metal Bands of All Time.
Today I’ll be reacting to a performance of their song “Critical Acclaim”. I was thoroughly impressed with how tight the band was from top to bottom.
I’m looking forward to hearing what you all thought of the performance. Please make sure to share your feedback below!

Actually "The Rev" himself was the original singer of those parts anyways. He wasn't really covering up for Shadows. They did it almost like the studio. The only thing that was avoided was a rap-like segment where they just played with the crowd instead.
amen 🙏 avenged sevenfold has no slack to pick up.
You see this a lot on a little piece of heaven .
You see it in scream, brompton cocktail, afterlife, a lot In the white album. Which is when they did that stuff the most. But the revs vocals were always so insane.
What he meant was that a lot of those parts were WRITTEN for one of the other dudes to sing - started as early as city of evil because after Waking the Fallen, M had throat surgery to repair some damage done.
David Champion
It wasn’t written that way for Matt to have a break. He just liked the way jimmy sounded in the chorus and thought it was cool. That album had the intent of featuring the other vocals in the band. That’s also why the harmonies on the album weren’t all just matt by himself anymore
The Rev always sang the high bits in this song
Nicolas Gralewics 👍
@@kentamplin He also sings in plenty other songs such as Afterlife, Fiction, A little piece of heaven, Crossroads.
He had a band where he was the lead singer called Pinkly Smooth.
I miss Jimmy. Glad I got to see him before he passed
Love it..thanks for making me able to realize about that!
Matt used to get really high up there way back. Look at... i wont see you tonight
I cannot tell you how long I have waited for you to do something on Avenged Sevenfold
I hope you enjoyed it, Nathaniel!
@@kentamplin I did, Kendall
@@NathanielGoritski i'm dying omg XD
This guys are one of the best today rock and metal bands...Syn one of a kind guitar player...I truly love them!!
@@flavy1000 syn is flat out fucking amazing
The Rev isn't picking up slack, that's just his vocal part in the songs, along with many other songs.
You didn’t understand what he said. As avenged sevenfold got older, they use the rev more because shadows can’t really do the High singing anymore. Of course it’s his part, but it was written for him for a reason.
@@flonkas you realize that the rev passed in 2009 and Matt’s voice didn’t start to change until 2014, right? The rev was a singer in a side project and he was the main song writer for A7X before he passed. Has nothing to do with “covering for Matt”
@@flonkas maybe but the way he implied it was that the rev wasn’t the initial vocalist for that section of the song which he was
@@flonkasmatt was arguably the greatest vocalist on earth around the time the rev passed away lol
Matt was always the main songwriter (rev has about 30 credits while matt has over 60) but rev wrote a hell of a lot aswell, those 2 wrote most lyrics@@anthonyhowes8125
So glad you chose a video with The Rev, he was quite the vocalist too along with being a phenomenal drummer. December marks 10 years since the world lost one of the best musician...
A great loss, Maddog Jones!
December 28th, 2009
one of the best, most creative and humble musicians to ever grace the earth, will never forget the day he passed💀❤️
And he will be back as a ninja like he said he would be lol
He's not gone though, and when he comes back he'll be the knife masta
The rev always sang those parts even before Matt wrecked his voice
@Blake Houle That was the first time, Matt had some vocal troubles more recently after releasing the stage and then touring non-stop for 2 years straight.
@Blake Houle how did he wrecked his voice? 😪
@@allforone8311 too much tours, not rest...
Thanks for listening.
More of avenged sevenfold pls!
Daniel 👍👍👍
@@kentamplin Man this WHOLE LIVE IN LBC reaction please! These is the best concert ive ever listened to IMO
Yes please whole live in the LBC
@@kentamplin yes
@@joshhewitt9705 hell yeah
I used to be a "hipster" metal head and did not like A7x at all. But saw them live at wacken 08 and was mind blown how good they where. Mshadows was next level good. Been a fan after that.
Sorry what? So hipster metal heads didn't like a7x? Crazy. Always been such a huge fan since 05
@@flonkas I think he was referring more to the metal head elitists that think anything less than Slayer or some euro shit isn't real metal, not actual hipsters
It’s called a metal elitist lmao. Glad you’ve changed though.
Thanks for listening.
I will never get over The Rev’s passing. My favorite musician.
He was amazing
Such a great loss, Tyler!
@@kentamplin such a sad* loss
Probably the best live band I’ve seen in terms of sounding like the record, syn is also unreal to see in person
Seriously. He does guitar parts live most people couldn't do in 100 takes in the studio.
I'd agree I've seen 80 + bands n they are top 5 live performances musically. A7X are really talented.
@@sly11benal7 ain't no such thing as talent. Talent helps you start but to get that level you need thousands of hours of practice. Nothing here is God given or born with but the bodies they use. Learning how to use them is up to the person themselves!
You are so right. I've been a massive A7X fan since probably 2005, when I was 14, always loved it all. Never saw them live until 2011, they played Afterlife and I about fucking died when Gates busted the solo. Absolutely unreal.
He used to scream like a maniac. Then he actually learned how to sing.
Btw thats cool you lived in Newport Beach. I lived there from 99 till 09. Then moved to Marina Del Rey till 2012.
Cool, MrKookie79!
Everything before the self titled album u can tell he hadn’t taken any singing lessons. Not saying it was bad but U can tell when he gets better control of his voice
I seen them live a lot of times there concerts are awsome its not the same without the rev
Cali Miller 👍👍👍
You do realize that the drummer in this video is "The Rev" the one that overdosed of oxycodone abuse right. The Rev was an amazing tight drummer with or without the drugs. PS he's always sung the high parts even before M. Shadows hurt his voice there's also a false report of him tearing his larynx which is not true.
I think he was talking about a former member who was there in the first album before they really hit it big.
Adithya Prasad jimmy was on the first album
Adithya Prasad you fool, the only members who aren’t originals are Jonny and Syn.
Christon Richardson is he dead?
@@adithyaprasad8586 they had a different bassist before the first album
Matt has started to get reactions from his pre-nightmare album days and it’s a bit unfair. He’s gotten so so so much better and you can really hear it on their most recent album “the stage” ... please do a reaction of “the stage” live! It’s much more vocally impressive.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 uhm i dont know where all of the people started to talk about substance abuse out of nowhere but his voice has been completely fucked for a while due to blood blisters forming in is throat or something like that. the only case of substance usage ive even heard about with avenged is with the drummer when he purposefully overdosed on a Brompton cocktail due to an enlarged heart and he wouldnt live for much longer
musically they've gotten a lot less technical, I liked them for their long duration songs that jumped through several different styles and kept us guessing and entertained through each and every song with technical guitar solos. Now they're more mainstream and I don't care to learn any of their songs on guitar. But I guess most fans don't play guitar so..Also the random melodies they go in to, like when Matt sings "Excuse the obscene, ignore the untrue
Depictions we see try and get through
Admitting mistakes can hurt
I'm not the last but I sure ain't the first" Then a matching guitar run follows and it's awesome. I miss that style.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 exactly, dude! For once I'm not the only one thinking that.
Brett Stooksbury Nightmare was his prime voice? The Stage is poppy and not on the same rasp level. His voice has clearly declined and that’s when it showed.. smh
@@duckspy436 I don't think he meant substance abuse, but rather just singing outside of his range to the point of causing damage.
A7X ain't easy, even for trained vocalists. Now couple that with a hot environment from all the pyrotechnics, and being out of breath from running around the stage for ~2 hours a night for weeks at a time. It is probably going to cause some damage.
And even then, there *could have been* some substance abuse, but that's not really my place to talk about his life like that, IMO.
Fun fact : Jimmy was actually a vocalist in his former band before avenged sevenfold was formed
Thank you!
@@kentamplin you're welcome.. FYI, the band name was Pinkly Smooth.. If you wanna check them out (ie. If you haven't heard of them.
I went to Jr high with these guys.. and still friends.. before they became avenged sevenfold they were successful failure..in highschool they became avenged sevenfold they all where in second bands.. and all can sing
React to “I won’t see you tonight pt. 1”. Quite possibly M Shadow’s greatest vocal performance.
Thanks for the suggestion, caden!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy no prob, brotha!
Would probably have to do the studio version though because all the live versions suckkkk
AMEN to that comment! Live at Ventura, this perfomance is epic! 🤘😎
@@GeoffVentures you've clearly never listened to the Live at Ventura version
KEN!!! I've never clicked on a notification so fast, I love this love performance so much and was hoping for the video! You never disappoint!
Thanks for the kind words, 360Effecta!
legit one of the few people who react to a video and actually critique and transform the work. Thanks for that.
👍👍👍
Loved the positive insight on other reasons substance could be used. Never even thought it could be used to get more energy before a show / relax to get sleep.
You’re always very respectful w/ great info that’s actually interesting. Thank you for the breakdown & quality content!
The scream after the first chorus always gives me goosebumps man, it’s fuckin awesome
That whole live show is just insane. Just like a movie. Next to impossibile to replicate. The vibe is just incredible. All notes spot on. No mistakes. The rev drumming is unmatched. The backing vocals are tight as hell. Just nothing to say honestly.
Just bow to this 😅
At least Matt was smart enough to realize something was wrong and got a great vocal coach. Its almost like getting a great therapist
I’ve seen them live 4 times and they blow me away Everytime. They are one of the best bands I’ve seen live and I’ve seen a lot of bands live. Parkway drive is up there with them. The guys have always had amazing chemistry
That's awesome, Jamie!
Jesus Christ I’ve been waiting so long for this
Not slack for the rev. Was always his part. Shows how great a musician he was. To be able to sing and play those complex beats at the same time. Its hard to sing and play together with any instrument. Especially drumming and being able to make do single string picking arrangements on a guitar . Being a guitar player, i can only usually sing on songs that require strumming instead of lots of single picked notes on multipe strings or complex arrangements even on one string
chris gibson 👍
This tour was out of this world. Saw them at the House of Blues in AC, venue doesnt hold more than 400-500 people. Literally could touch their toes, amazing show, amazing band. Seeing The Rev weeks before he passed was a shocking and special moment in my life. As a drummer, my style has so much inspiration from him.
Very cool!
Yes! I've been waiting for you to do a reaction from this performance! Such a good live show🤘
I'm glad you enjoyed it, SLS10!
I loved your experienced recount of the touring cycle, it brought on Vietnam style flashbacks for me. So much worse without roadies, add three hours of setting up and packing down, and you’re so pumped with adrenaline after the show (or caffeinated for several hour covers gigs) and trying to sleep so you’re not trashed the next day is always so challenging
Man it's bands like that that really inspire me to become a metal vocalist
Wraith 666 The Rev made me want to be a drummer
Wraith 666 👍👍👍
Actually the parts that The Rev sings were written by him to sing on purpose.
He actually said that
You're way above UA-cam level dude. Thanks for the reactions they're actually helpful
You always bring my favorites singers, great job !
Thanks, DIOZI!
The whole album Nightmare seemed to be a true turning point for the band after the drummer passed. I loved how Mike Portnoy stepped in and filled that void and helped them finish the album and tour afterwards. As to the clean sound, the song Bat Country, is the finest example of their amazing double guitar attack ever. First time I ever heard it, I commented that the middle guitar riffs sounded like Mozart wrote it and Malmsteen played it.
Thanks for listening.
There have been parts on "Waking the Fallen" and "City of Evil" that Shadows couldn't sing live, that the others took. On the self-titled album they actually included everyones voice so the live performance matches the record. The drummer also sings these parts on the record, just because they liked it.
Seen them 6 times and each time I didn’t think it’s possible for them to top the previous tour but they always do! Proud fan since ‘03
Waited for a sevenfold “reaction video” forever now! Love it man! 😎🤘🏻
👍
The chorus of this song belongs to the Rev and always will do. They still play his vocals when they perform this live, such a tribute to such an amazing, talented drummer!
M.Shadows is the greatest live metal vocalist ever!
Ziaul Hoq He is not that good anymore. :(
Ziaul Hoq I don’t know, Howard Jones is pretty epic. Lol
He's seldom above good. He really is the only member who really lacks in this band.
Try listening to Joe Duplantier from Gojira! :D
way2sh0rt07grad just saw light the torch 2 weeks ago with fit for a king and ice nine kills. Honestly Howard Jones fucking killed it man
Thank you so much Ken!!
Had been waiting for M. Shadows for a long time.
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Resurgam 👍
I haven't listened to this band in a while. They're like my high school sweethearts. I also don't know your channel. But the amount of shoutouts and time you put into the description alone shows your sincerity and you earned a sub right out of left field. Looking forward to losing sleep to your channel
Haha! Welcome, Greg! Glad you're here.
Can you do a vocal reaction on Roxette? The lead singer (Marie) passed away. She was a fantastic singer 😔
Thanks for the suggestion, Carlos777!
The rev sang that part because he wrote it as a pre chorus but matt thought it sounded good as a chorus and should let the rev sing it
We will always miss The Rev. He was an amazing drummer and a crucial member of their band. Seeing this live performance made me tear a little because they are all a huge group of friends and their song "So Far Away" was a perfect tribute to The Rev
Joshua Wilson ❤️
Never in my life would I have thought I’d say another man has a great vibe haha. You seem chill has all hell dude. Awesome reaction.
The Rev always sang lead on the chorus of this song, not just live, the studio version is him too. He also didn't have a drug problem, he intentionally overdosed because he was given less than a year to live due to a heart condition he was born with, he knew he wouldn't make it to 30 and it ended up affecting him even earlier than they thought it would. He was in really bad health in the months leading up to his death and it wasn't from the drugs. If anything, the drugs were keeping him going. The song "Fiction" off Nightmare, which he sings lead on, is his suicide note.
I’ve never heard about this? Always just thought it was accidental, and didn’t know about his health conditions either
how satisfying was that omg. I feel cleansed
Haha! Awesome!
They had the Rev just sing those parts because they liked the way it sounded on the demo. He was insanely talented, rest in peace Jimmy.
Dude I love your content and your simplicity. Keep going!
Thanks for listening.
Please react to Pinkly Smooth, it is Brian and Jimmy's side project. It has Jimmy as the lead vocalists plus it's not signed by any label so you shouldn't have to worry about copyright claims.
Absolutely LOVE Avenged Sevenfold. This was my go to song!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
👍👍👍
my first time watching your video, and it looks like this will not be the last. Love your video good sir
😊Thanks for listening.
Awesome video. I've rewatched that full show so many fucking times. A7x is such an insanely solid band.
😊
I love Avenged Sevenfold. They have really awesome songs and what I like the most is this feel I get from some moments as if they were actually "secretly" making fun of this idea of being a serious band. For example they have a song that's longer than 8 minutes and this fact itself gets funny when I listen to the song and watch the music video, and the song is so good you don't feel tired of listening to that many minutes of one single song. I'm not that kind of fan that knows everything about the band, so I'm aware this kind of experience could be only happening with me.
Thiago Oliveira 👍
Some M Shadows hating going on. Nobody picks up his slack. And the Rev was doing his usual parts that they wrote together. M Shadows is a beast.
I asked and I received! Thanks Ken! These guys have a special place in my heart!
😊Thanks for listening.
Crazy I’m a manager at a casino and Avenged Sevenfold was sitting at my bar just hanging out. I even got a picture with them super cool people
I hate when people say he died cause of drugs. He had a heart condition and he and the whole band knew he was going to die soon. And one night the pain was so bad he took more pain pills than he should’ve, and died.
So sad, Allen. ❤️
He died by drugs
Rip rev, gone 10 years too long 😩😭😭😭
😭😭😭
WOW! That was one of the best edited live videos I've ever seen!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Calvin!
love your stories bud! really awesome!
Thank you, red zepplin!
hey bud, if i gave you my phone number would you call it?
The opening song really set the tone best band ever!!
Rock on.
The Rev (drummer) sings all those parts in the actual studio version. At this point of Matt's carreer he could sing all the high pitched parts and you can make sure of that if you listen to this entire show. He didn't have a single problem with that. And btw The drummer who is playing in this video IS the member who passed away and this is like 2 years before he overdosed (i think)
Thanks for listening.
Great video!!!!! Most react channels pause sooo many times they can’t really get a nice reaction to the music but you killed it with less pausing and more listening and talking about certain segments when it’s relevant. You my friend earned a sub keep up the great work 👍
😊Thanks for listening.
Yes!!!! About damn time ken!!!!
😊Thanks for listening.
It’s too bad you put out a new version of ktva I lost access to my old account and lost my course! I messed my voice up though I did what you said not to do and just started headstrong with everything before watching all the videos I’m definitely stuck in a raspy tone now and have zero range compared to 4 years ago when I first started the course
Don’t know about any loss of range man. Have you heard the newest songs like “higher”. That’s a pretty “high” pitch song. Or “tonight the world dies” and the ending of “so far away”. Would love to see you react to those.
Phil Anselmo had that trouble but at like 50 hes still got ranges. Are fat joints sobriety?
Dang that sounded killer! ~ Great review Ken! ~
Thanks for listening.
thank you for this🥰🥰
You're very welcome, Vexatious.
It's funny how much you talk about how tight they are, but the only time I saw them live was in Manchester Arena, January 2017 where Gates forgot the intro to Hail to the King😂
Blake Simmons 🤭
Could you do an analysis on Matts voice from a recent live performance, and go in more detail of what went wrong? and how we can avoid having the same issues?
Thanks for the suggestion, Alex!
U just got yourself a new subs man.. U are amazing

Thank you so much sir for reacting to their song😘😘 i waited so long for this 😂😂

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy you’re very positive and nice. ❤️🇺🇸
Nah buddy the drummer, jimmy helped write the that song as well as most of that album and he always sang those parts
This is the first video I saw from you and I already like it
Thanks, Synchro!
Seeing the rev again brings it back man. forREVer RIP
I saw them live years ago, and his voice was still strong at the end - while mine was shot to crap LMAO!
Thanks for listening.
The drummer had his vocals in the background of the studio version. I don’t believe he was picking up any slack.
That whole concert, the whole band was flawless. One of the best live performances ever!
😊Thanks for listening.
The opening that most moved Avenged Sevenfold fans, was amazing
We have to admit something... only reason why Matt’s voice has changed in such a noticeable distortion way, is because he’s always wanted to give his everything to us the fans
Good point, Daniel!
Ken, hi buddy. You know, you have introduced me to so many artists I’ve never heard of because all my life I’ve focused on Gospel artists like BrianFreeandAssurance. Ok? Just wanted to say that. Putting up the tree tomorrow.
I'm happy to hear that, john mark!
Made my day. Got goosebumps 10 timss. Thanks so much Ken. You should also react to a little piece if heaven and hail to the king the acoustic version.
Btw heard them live 2 years ago. M Shadows has actually learned how to sing with no screaming, but doing it in the past took its toll. Hope he recovers well

Hi Ken and Bob! In the 1980's America was turned on its head by none other than two of the best commercials ever made. One was the Wendy's ad with the old lady that begged the question, 'Where's the beef?" The other was for the Freedom Rock album which asked the question, "Hey man is that Freedom Rock?' and then answered it with "Yeah Man" 'and then demanded, "Well turn it up man." I listened to the Freedom Rock album until I wore out the needle on my record player. In honor of that great commercial and album, please do a vocal coach reaction to Donovan's live version of Sunshine Superman. Thanks Ken and Bob for all the fantastic and extraordinary videos.
I watched this one lady who was a clean vocal coach reacting to gunslinger, but I love that you have the knowledge of more of what they’re about
Ken, if I’m not mistaken, you look like you miss touring. It’s nice to know you put your money where your mouth is, and you absolutely lead by example! The proof is definitely in the singing! 🎤 You are greatly loved by so many!💖
Thanks, Ellexis!

Jimmy has a great vocal talent
Happy that I was at that long beach arena concert. I'll never forget it, April 20th 2008. I was in 8th grade. Huge a7x fan, still am. And it was my first show ever. First and last I'd ever see Jimmy drum his ass off :(
R.i.p Jimmy "the Rev" Sullivan.
Occlehnorton ❤️
This was definitely back in their party days lol, the rev (their drummer) used to sing in a band called Pinkly Smooth that Sinister Gates was also a part of. Rev had always taken care of the high note, he did so in songs like A little piece of Heaven as well.
You should react to Pinkly smooth, it was The Revs band, he did lead vocals
They don't have live footage tho as far as ik as it only lasted 1 album and was more of a side project
Thank for the suggestion!!
No that's Jimmy's part even on the album. That was actually his idea watch the making of the album
Texas Performance Trucks 👍
This was by far one of their best songs you could debunk. Love it
😊
I like this Ken guy. Very likeable and never boring.
Thank you, Enigma UniWar!
Was NOT substance abuse. He had a medical condition called an “enlarged heart. He had medication he had to take for it. One night, after getting home from having a few drinks, he made the poor decision of taking said meds while he still had alcohol in his system. The chemical mix killed him.
It was still an overdose, it was not a result of his enlarged heart. I'm sure it didn't help, but still. He had a lot in his system when he died. Enough to kill someone with a regular heart if they weren't used to it.
He was known as a recreational user, always switching up his drugs so he never became addicted. And of course, it's very hard to build up a tolerance to something that way.
R.I.P. Jimmy, we love you foREVer! ❤
