    Tons of respect to Ken. As someone who semi-wrecked their voice essentially yelling out thrash metal vocals, I just want to say listen to Ken and save your voice. This guy is killing it still at his age, and you can see he's still getting really good distortion on notes that aren't super easy to hit clean. You don't do that for as long as he's being doing it without doing it right. If he was doing it wrong, he would have lost it in his 30s like everyone you can think of that doesn't sing like they used to.

      That's why you have to catch most bands/singers when they are young and at their peak. Voices are shot before they even 40 or 30 even.

      I had a similar issue a few months ago. I had to refrain from talking when i could. My voice was really light pitched at whispery and some points. My voice is back to normal though. Is your voice okay now do you still have any issues?

    • @anna-ripley
      @anna-ripley 2 роки тому +7

      @@MrLuigiFercotti This is an old comment, but that's just not true. I started out singing three years ago (when I was 50), and I am singing rock now. I just build my voice up with the help of CVT to get the right singing technique - and I don't have any problems singing on the top of my lunges - for 3 hours in a row. I don't feel my age that way. So if anyone else reads this comment and you are thinking you are too old - then think again. It's possible to fulfil your dreams - but get a good vocal coach :-)

      When i saw them live in 2012, half of their first song (rock or bust) he was in falsetto and it was awkward. Then halfway through he somehow activated the grit. Listen to ballbreaker or stiff upper lip, you can hear that his voice is so ruined (think the sqwuaking thunderstruck voice to now) his falsetto is near naturally gritty. He used to clench his fists singing high, now he's really loose.
      Tl;dr. He ruined his voice and uses his messed up gritty falsetto to acheive grit.

      OMG 😳

    • @stogeez2637
      @stogeez2637 2 роки тому

      @@noverrr4508 nope, he said it in the video. In a nutshell you’re squeezing to get these sounds, but not super hard it’s very light, imagine lifting something heavy and going “huh”. Yk how you get that gritty sound when that happens? Thats where it comes from, but thats also just one kind of distortion, and you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT try to do it with what I just told you. It doesn’t have to be this guy however I would highly highly recommend him, but as long as they’re a good vocal coach and there is a lot of evidence to prove that. Then you should take their lessons and do what they tell you to do if you’d like to use vocal distortion. Trust me I blew my voice out before it sucks and its scary, luckily I’m young and have recovered pretty well. It’s just gonna take a lot of practice to get good. As for Fry, the sound the grudge makes is fry, if you can make that noise, you basically do that and gradually increase the amount you’re leaning into it. A good representation of this in a song is the part before the last chorus of Miss Murder by AFI. Hope this helps bro

      I did watch a video at one point about breath control exercises which I found useful.
      One that helped me extend my breath time was where I would time how long I could hold a "tsssss" sound, not using vocal cords, just breath through tongue and teeth. It comes back to what Ken said about not letting the breath out too quickly, it's controlled release like a pressure valve. Seeing how long you can go before stopping can exercise the ability. May cause lightheadedness which is normal, just be sure to breathe normally in between until feeling normal again. Breathing exercises can also be useful for anxiety and improve asthma (although not cure it), it just needs to be allowed to be done at the pace it's comfortable at. It's like blowing up a balloon, it can be hard but each (paced) attempt can improve the stretchiness of the balloon and strengthen the muscles involved, eventually being easier, but not if you go hell for leather in one go expecting instant good results.
      Perhaps you can look into breathing exercises and find something right for you.

    In a lot songs is possible using an distortion only in short parts. Usually in high notes. And pure the tone can be used in 80% of track. But because distortion is much more emotive sound, the listener better remembers high distorted parts. This parts hitting her heart. Therefore is possible save protect our voice, but final effect is still good. Changing of color of voice it bring nice changing of registers, which is always important value of our singing.

    Thank you for this! I’ve been watching your videos for years trying to nail compression better. Right now, it happens naturally now and then, but some days it’s not there at all. I still need to learn control to master it. My band is getting ready to record and I’m trying to up my game before it’s my turn for vocals. This is one of those skills so many instructors can demonstrate, but can’t tell you exactly how they do it. My old vocal coach told me to practice ‘Man in a Box’ so I was so happy to see Gabriela’s version. Perfect example of how females can sing with aggressive technique too. That’s the kind of music we make, so I’ve GOT to nail vocals down to match. I’m looking into your course and will have to convince my significant other it can fit in my gear budget - That’s not easy to do so pray for me! 😂

    Ken, I have been singing for years in distortion only and it seems I did it the right way, but what you say right there in the end is totally true. I could belt up to D5 only with a distorted voice. Only after a long period of singing lightly I can belt again up to D5 and even D#5 with clean tone. You are not just a vocal coach, you are a vocal MASTER!
