It's a pity he's never been able to prove that he can sing it live like the album version though. Although in fairness there's only one concert video of Anselmo attempting it live when he could still technically sing high. But drug abuse, overall bad living and constant guttural screaming turned even his speaking voice into a bass baritone which is sad as I don't think I've ever even heard a good cover singer do it well... maybe Ken can do a version of "Cemetery Gates" as his falsetto screams are great.

Love that we got Steven Tyler in his latter years ranking in this list. I honestly prefer the rasp of his voice in his 40s-60s over the earlier days of Aerosmith
Ken, showing my age here (56) but that epic Scream by Steve Perry from Wheel in the Sky was sustained a really long time and probably is the most or one of the most beautiful, dramatic and haunting in history and right up there is Three Dog night's "one" Chuck Negron vocals tow a rds the end of the song but only the studio version because he had a difficult time doing this live in sustaining that note but the studio version is unreal those are my favorite two but it is unbelievable that you did not have at least a half a dozen of Robert Plant's screams here because he is the original master of Rock screaming and everybody basically copied him (and mostly badly I might add)... so you need to make up for this by doing another list because these are the real singers anybody can just scream through a reverb can and take a deep breath and sustain it for several seconds that's nothing I could do that when I was a kid and do it just as well as half of these guys that you're showing what I couldn't do is sound like Steve Perry, Robert Plant or Chuck Negron or Ian Gilian... that level of performance and skills only come through training that didn't happen by accident those guys may have destroyed their voices through the years but they didn't just wake up singing in the shower like that one day with the exception of maybe Robert Plant lol. That level of greatness only comes from hard work and studying under somebody that is an equally great talent and teacher like yourself which I highly admire and you are definitely helping me get closer to my goals and I will be purchasing your full course as soon as I can afford it. Ian Gilan should have been number one on your list without the shadow of any doubt he is probably the most gifted voice in rock history simply because he was the male version of Mariah Carey back in the 60s & 70s. He was almost at dog-whistle territory until he blew his vocal cords out just like Robert Plant which Plants epic scream in the middle of "Since I've Been Loving You" (studio version only) Is from another planet and just the little things he used to do like at the fade out of communication breakdown or whole lot of love or if you want a grungier modern scream from plant just listen to the studio version of I'm going to crawl at the end that basically puts all these modern guys to shame because he does a better job at what they are doing then they do but it's really because his voice was shot by 1980 sadly but he still sounded great because he knew how to use what he had left and occasionally he can still hit a few highs I have seen some bootlegs of him using his true head and chest voice in a few bars and some really good days and it was really really awesome and the thing with plant is his talking voice sounds beautiful and I wish he understood that about himself a little more and quit putting his voice through a harmonizer to jack up the pitch the dude has such a eloquent and romantic voice that he can recite a Shakespearean prose and warm everybody's heart so I wish he would use his true voice a little more in his newer music it would be 10 times better because he is perfect the way he is that is unchanged in his voice it's just he can't get up there super high anymore. But I can't do this rant without also discussing the female counterparts to all this screaming which I want to scream at you for not putting Janis Joplin in this list because she is the originator of all females screaming in rock music and nobody ever did it better than her in her prime so to not include her at all was definitely deserving of a dozen lashes here so assume the position and take your medicine lol. I usually overlook these things you miss because you seem to be really focused and obsessed with 80s and 90s rockers which is surprising for your age you're about the same age as me but I guess it's because of your target audience and that's cool but not at the expense of the greatest era which even young rockers will usually admit is the late 60s and 70s and some of the 80s like with Iron Maiden in great bands like that 4 hard metal but even those guys are all hugely influence by Sabbath and Deep Purple so even that generation Drew their inspiration from the late sixties and early seventies just like classical music basically Drew most of its inspiration from Beethoven, Bach and Mozart each form of music has that Golden Era of inspiration and all I am saying is you cannot forget that nucleus whenever you discuss or create lists of greatest attributes... I mean nothing against Axl Rose but I'm sure he would be embarrassed to be in the same room with Robert Plant and sit and watch your list and Robert not being mentioned once in it come on dude... we've got to put these things in context to give proper homage and respect to the foundation we are all standing on. There are of course exceptions to the rule like Chris Cornell and a few other singers who actually sound like they have some training and actually worked on their voice apart from singing in the shower or karaoke night at the Corner Pub and I don't know what's going on with the newer guys in rock but they just don't sound right and it seems to be accepted to have a really wimpy almost sissy like voice in rock music now... almost like a kind of androgynous voice that doesn't know if it's a man or a woman. I don't care what somebody's sexual orientation is but a man is still a man and should sound like a man even if a man sings high you still know you're listening to a man back in the day; just listen to Robert Plant or Steve Perry; there's no gender confusion here. I don't know what it is but it's like men lost all their testosterone somewhere back in the 90s and it never returned with the exception of Chris Cornell who I thought would be the next Robert Plant until the evil cabal that has infiltrated and taken over the music industry they seem to just destroy everybody's life that enters their evil domain... without going too much in the weeds of all this I think you know what I'm talking about and its really disheartening that nobody ever talks about this aspect of the music industry but that's another subject altogether but anyway it would really be great if you did another video with these things in mind I could send you a link to probably about 10 bootlegs of Plant doing things that he couldn't even do after 1969. I will try to dig them up and send them to you. Peace, Bob
Many of the honorable mentions were better than many of the ones that actually made the list. Also, incredibly sad that Michael Sweet shows up no where in any of this.
Great list, thanks Ken, and you absolutely deserve to be there with your closing of 'you know my name', it was phenomenal! I absolutely love that song, and it seems really hard to sing, but you really did it justice. Really love your song 'Media Mania' btw, which seems even more appropriate these days!
You know my name is such a cool James Bond tune. You did that song justice! (Massive Bond fan aswell) Chris Cornell is one of my favourites of all time. Really want to be able to scream someday. Didn't really know much about him beside his music, and I was really sad when he and Chester left Earth. A couple months later, I was bored and looked at Wikipedia, searching up my birthday only to see what has happend during the years on that day, and figured out that me and Chris had the same. It doesn't mean anything, I know. I just thougth it was really cool!
Great list of vocals of all time, for me the number one is rob halford in victim of changes theme. thanks a lot! dont´n forget a epic scream of GEFF TATE on Take hold the flame, see it in concert of Japan is fantastic!!!!!!!.
Legend has it that the producer of Number of the Beast kept stopping Bruce short of his scream and criticizing his performance and making them constantly start over. Bruce was furious, frustrated and tossing chairs. Once he honked Bruce off enough he said Now scream. Legendary scream.
Layne Staley of Alice in Chains also had some epic screaming vocals in songs like Love Hate Love and Sunshine etc. It would be awesome if he would also get included in the list. Anyway you rock Mr.Ken!🤘🤘
Great list! Screams have been integral for my vocal style and your videos and lessons on your channel have helped me out a lot through the years in that as well as my fundamentals. I think this year I will finally be able to get one of the full courses and take it to the next level. I'm really excited. Super thankful for all of your work. Appreciate it. As far as lists, the scream I always hold as the most epic personally is Jim Gillette's scream in Nitro's Machine Gunn Eddie. It is so insane. A few other personal favorites that really affected me in no particular order (Well, maybe the first lol): Michael Sweet (Stryper) - The Way as well as In God We Trust (both versions and well, basically all of Michael's screams lol He has affected me more than anyone) Chang Yu-Sheng - The Talk Show Singing Challenge (really helped me key in on sound queues for my own technique development) Rob Rock (Impellitteri) - Lost in the Rain (made it a goal of mine when I was younger to be able to scream the notes like him, and play like Chris.... HA! Talk about lofty) Brandi Carlile - The Story Rob Halford (Judas Priest) - Exciter Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart) - She's Gone Freddie Mercury (Queen) - Gimme the Prize (Not quite a scream, but the high register notes and tone is absolutely insane) Roger Taylor (Also Queen) - My Fairy King and 39 David DiSanto (Vektor) - Tetrastructural Minds Tom Araya (Slayer) - Angel of Death Dan Weyandt (Zao) - Parade of Chaos Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) - Run to the Hills Just some that came to mind. There are so many more. TLDR: Good vid! Love your content! Screams are nice n' stuff! \m/
I miss Freddie Mercury's WHY from Under Pressure, which is not just an extremely high scream but also demands an excellent vocal technique since he's perfectly singing up the chromatic scale until a freaking A5. Furthermore Tom Araya's scream in Slayers's Angel of Death. Oh, and Bruce Dickinson (Number of the Beast) and Ian Gillan (Child in Time) should easily be in the Top 10.
I missed Tony Harnell(TNT) in this one. The last song on the album Tell No Tales, which is the title song, has one of the most epic scream /high notes I have ever heard 😎👌 That whole album in general is just epic 👍
My top 5 personally, in no particular order: Eric Adams (Manowar), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), M. Shadows (A7X), Michael Kiske (Helloween), and Blackie Lawless (W.A.S.P)
I had to pause the video yesterday and come back to it today and just finished it. That scream you did at the end is bloody impressive. I'm now going from not subscribed but watches some of your videos, to subscribed and going back to watch your other videos.
@@kentamplin do you have videos on hitting, and sustaining, high notes consistently? I can HIT the notes from songs like Dream Theater's "Finally Free" but I have trouble holding the notes and not having voice cracks while doing so. I've gotten better over time by practicing with easier songs like Roman Sky by Avenged Sevenfold, but I feel like there's something in the way I sing that is making it harder on me than it needs to be.
The scream that I was impressed by was Caleb Followill's of Kings of Leon on the song "Charmer". He preceeds each line with a scream but flows into the first lyric immediately.
I'm shocked that Cradle of Filth's cover of Hallowed be Thy Name by Iron Maiden didn't make it in the top 3. Dani Filth is easily in the top 3 of all screamers out there.
Another excellent list. The difference between some screams and Gillan's scream on Child of Time is conviction, emotion, passion, pain and soul. This a scream that brings so much emotion that I always have a chill run through my body when I listen to it. Some screams are screams just for a scream sake with no feel, emotion or conviction. Some of my favorites are vocalists hitting musical notes or through a series of musical notes to reach that high note. There are many great screams. Tarja Turunen, Ralf Scheepers and Brad Delp all belong on the Top 25. This is especially true for Brad because Boston's More Than a Feeling is such an iconic and perfect song. It's not just the scream rising to hit the high note, dropping lower before extending to hit an even higher note and then his fade out . . . then accented by the guitars of Tom Scholz and Barry Goudreau. This is some of the best vocal control I have ever heard. A couple of notes on Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris and The Number of the Beast. Steve also drew inspiration from the Scottish Poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns. Bruce was frustrated by Martin Birch (not a larch) direction that he threw chairs around the studio and gave out the scream that became famous. Thereafter Bruce has had to do that scream at every concert Maiden has played since. Do you ever think that Bruce asks, "Why? Why did I do it?" 😉
Before any of these, as well as the honorable mentions, as a scream that easily goes alongside that of the late great Chester Bennington. This would be first released in ‘68 , though played live earlier, by Pink Floyd having title that evolved over time and published as the “Point Me at the Sky” b-side, “Careful with that Axe, Eugene” contains one of the earliest epic screams in rock. A magnificent live version was released in ‘69 on the Ummagumma album that features the slower instrumental build to Waters’ swallowed screams. Too many fans, this is among the songs that exemplifies the Syd Barrett era of experimentation. This was an influential progenitor of the screams that followed and seriously deserved no leas than an honorable mention. As Ken Tamplin said, this was based on poll results, so that is what it is, but if you fancy screams in music and haven’t heard this landmark Pink Floyd live version, you should check it out as well. Peace. ✌🏻

@@williamkramer9731 Ticks and Leeches is in the honorable mentions at 13:25. I do think it should have been high up in the list, though
Yes Grudge
Love that we got Steven Tyler in his latter years ranking in this list. I honestly prefer the rasp of his voice in his 40s-60s over the earlier days of Aerosmith
👍👍👍
Peace, Bob
I honestly thought Plant was going to be No. 1. Sooooo messed up. NOBODY ON EARTH can scream better than that rock God. What a sham.
I think Michael Sweet from STRYPER had, and still has, a phenomenal voice with some SWEET screams! 😁
Thanks for weighing in, Kevin!
Thank you sir for your best information on best screamers
My pleasure, Atharva!
Many of the honorable mentions were better than many of the ones that actually made the list. Also, incredibly sad that Michael Sweet shows up no where in any of this.
25 slots. 25 S L O T S.
Agree wholeheartedly. The end of Stryper's "The Way" is epic!
Michael Sweet missing what a drag.
@@CruelSun7319 AND?
Ian Gillan's intro on Highway Star
Marco Salvetti 👍
Ian Gillan "Don't Hold Me Back"
Child in time, that are his best screams by far
Marco Salvetti Sure did like his voice. His work on "Jesus Christ Superstar" is ...well, it's....Godly. Plus there's all his stuff on stage
That is cool, Åsmund Selland!
No one is gonna mention the clever puns for everyone.
Honourable mentions are awesome!
Great list of vocals of all time, for me the number one is rob halford in victim of changes theme. thanks a lot! dont´n forget a epic scream of GEFF TATE on Take hold the flame, see it in concert of Japan is fantastic!!!!!!!.
Terrible !!!!
Surprised Blackie Lawless wasn’t mentioned. He’s one of the best metal vocalists I’ve ever heard. In fact, he’s my favorite vocalist of all time!
Dude couldn't agree more, what a legend. The neon god is a fucking masterpiece.
@@ivanivanovic5857 and The Crimson Idol!
So happy Chris is on here, his scream in Cochise is my favorite of all time!
My two favorite screams saved for last 🤘🔥
👍👍👍
Lots of screamers in metal music. You’ve compiled a pretty good list.
I have always loved me some Blackie Lawless.
I'm glad you liked it, Andy!
Can’t really argue with the list but I can’t believe Micheal Sweet isn’t on here
Legend has it that the producer of Number of the Beast kept stopping Bruce short of his scream and criticizing his performance and making them constantly start over. Bruce was furious, frustrated and tossing chairs. Once he honked Bruce off enough he said Now scream. Legendary scream.
Hahaha! Great!
Mutt Lange did similar to Brian Johnson on Back In Black
That dio scream in Mob Rules was awesome.
Cody Harbour 💪💪💪
Great video!!
Death's cover of "Painkiller" by Judas Priest contains some of the sickest screams I've ever heard. Chuck Schuldiner was insane.
A few other personal favorites that really affected me in no particular order (Well, maybe the first lol):
Michael Sweet (Stryper) - The Way as well as In God We Trust (both versions and well, basically all of Michael's screams lol He has affected me more than anyone)
Chang Yu-Sheng - The Talk Show Singing Challenge (really helped me key in on sound queues for my own technique development)
Rob Rock (Impellitteri) - Lost in the Rain (made it a goal of mine when I was younger to be able to scream the notes like him, and play like Chris.... HA! Talk about lofty)
Brandi Carlile - The Story
Rob Halford (Judas Priest) - Exciter
Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart) - She's Gone
Freddie Mercury (Queen) - Gimme the Prize (Not quite a scream, but the high register notes and tone is absolutely insane)
Roger Taylor (Also Queen) - My Fairy King and 39
David DiSanto (Vektor) - Tetrastructural Minds
Tom Araya (Slayer) - Angel of Death
Dan Weyandt (Zao) - Parade of Chaos
Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) - Run to the Hills
Just some that came to mind. There are so many more.
TLDR: Good vid! Love your content! Screams are nice n' stuff! \m/
👍👍👍
There's about two or three from Slayer that are some of the most epic screams ever that you forgot.
Angel of Death!
Especially the Angel of Death scream
Angel of Death!!!!!!!!!
WAR ENSEMBLE
Thanks for the mentioning them, Will!
Michael Sweet's high note in "In God We Trust."
👍
Great scream Ken!
All GREAT!
My personal favorite is from "Unleash the Archers" singer Brittany Hayes' opening scream on their song "Awakening".
😮 🙂 😃 😎 💪
Thanks for sharing this video. I also love lincon park. Great band!
😊
I missed Tony Harnell(TNT) in this one. The last song on the album Tell No Tales, which is the title song, has one of the most epic scream /high notes I have ever heard 😎👌 That whole album in general is just epic 👍
The most epic scream most of us have ever heard is Angel of Death. HAD to be on you list. Great video though!
really liked to see chester in number one, this was a really well made video ken!
Thanks!
@@kentamplin i can only imagine how much research you devoted to this video
My top 5 personally, in no particular order: Eric Adams (Manowar), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), M. Shadows (A7X), Michael Kiske (Helloween), and Blackie Lawless (W.A.S.P)
Couldn't agree more. Eric and Ralf are deserve more love
Stratovarius, king Diamond, udo, and Doro Pesch should have definitely been somewhere on this list! Udo’s opening scream on fast as a shark!
You should check out Axl’s Coachella scream during Live and let die . It’s pretty insane! Also... you freaking killed it!
Rock on!
I had to pause the video yesterday and come back to it today and just finished it. That scream you did at the end is bloody impressive. I'm now going from not subscribed but watches some of your videos, to subscribed and going back to watch your other videos.
Thanks for subscribing!
The reason why chester bennington scream is so memorable because it really sounds pretty unique like no one can scream like him 🙂
👍
Not even a mention of Michael Sweet? He's one of the best if not the best in the business.
thank you, that's good that someone knows it!
Thanks for sharing your pick, Brian!
My thought exactly.
Good call I forgot
Stryper rocks!
Cheers
The end of THWTD is epic.
Nice great vídeo man thanks
My pleasure!
The scream that I was impressed by was Caleb Followill's of Kings of Leon on the song "Charmer". He preceeds each line with a scream but flows into the first lyric immediately.
museofire 👍
Why did I do it?" 😉
😊
Peace. ✌🏻
You're absolutely right! Thank you!
...surely Marko Hietala’s ‘Sing my angel of music!!!’ From the End of an Era concert deserves a spot on this list...
😊
That scream you did at the end was pretty awesome man. Nice video!
Thank you, Charles!
Listen to Lost Horizon - Highlander. It has a few reeeeally high screams but also has one INSANE scream! It would be on this list 100%.
