AVENGED SEVENFOLD A Little Piece of Heaven ~ Composer Reaction and Dissection
👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
Avenged Sevenfold - 'Save Me' is a journey, wonderfully composed and very meaningful, it was one of the last track written by their drummer The Rev before he passed away
I’ll add that it also has Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater on drums and halfway through this video I stopped to listen to “Save Me” but then came back for the rest of the video. I’m still here! Aww right!
Save me is definitely their most underrated song.
@@trogdorman121 remember the first time you realized it was a masterpiece. we were so young then.
I agree with you, but for me Save Me is still second to Exist. That song is their best masterpiece.
@@VelvetySharkToast first time i listened to it, i believed save me was a masterpiece. But after the 100th listen you realize how repetitive it truly is compared to other songs. Honestly it should have ended much earlier and truncated the guitar solo.
It's funny you say it has a Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo vibe. The song was written by The Rev inspired by Oingo Boingo and A7X actually got Steve Bartek to help with the orchestral arrangement and production. There's an awesome bts video of the making of this song.
Comment needs bumping!
@@pierat___ yep!
Don't forget, Shadows compared ALPOHEAVEN to Bohemian Rhapsody as well‽
Almost as of uncle Geebz watched the making of video, if not my respect of your musical eptitude/knowledge is staggering.
That whole album bts "movie" is amazing
Don't forget Marc Mann was there too.
REVs vocals in this are one of a kind. RIP to an amazing musician
It's so crazy that he sounded even better live than on record. I miss him so much.
Agreed, as a drummer it's so crazy to be able to sing and drum at the same time. Timings never line up and even breathing doesnt work the same lol.
My wife doesn't even really like A7X that much but she LOVES his vocals. He was a great singer
@@fliper975 Have her listen to Pinkly smooth 🤘🏼
The only a7x songs i actually go back to is critical acclaim and this one, live versions just for revs part lol
The fact that the Rev played the living daylights out of the drums and sang those words AT THE SAME TIME just blows my mind
The fact they all sing harmony is badass. Literally what's sets them apart in my opinion
This song is 100% the Rev (drummer). He had a unique, goofy style. The band hasn't been the same since he passed away.
Wish I could see them live with the Rev. He died when I was a kid
@@thedankestmemes1116 Got to see them in February of early 2009, one of the greatest shows I've ever seen and probably the best drummer I've seen live
Not the same, absolutely, but I'm glad they stuck around and keep on producing tracks. The Stage was a very good album, but Hail to The King has some of my fav's from them. _Planets,_ and _Heretic_ are fantastic pieces.
@@jaikanatar4502 I missed a show of theirs the year he died. Them as headliners, and Skindred and Disturbed as the supporting acts. I’ll never forgive myself for missing it.
@@JaySay Personally i prefer Nightmare the two albums before it. Hail to the King i still enjoyed though. They have one hell of a live show
Not sure why nobody is bringing up I Won't See You Tonight. Most overlooked avenged sevenfold song ever. Two-part masterpiece that shows off the band's musicianship really well.
100% agree!!!!
That song alone was my transition to metal
Great songs, the end of the first part was one of my favorite vocal lines from M. shadows. Waking the fallen as a whole was such a great album
Part 1 is really good. Part 2 is straight ass
@@1nnova659 the hottest take
Fun fact: The drummer (James/Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan) wrote this whole song in ONE night. While absolutely smashed.
that is quite the fun fact thank you
That is not exactly true. They wrote this song collectively for months. It took them the longest to write the entire song. He laid down a basic demo in one night which had just a piano, drums, and basic vocals with little lyrics. They hadn’t even finished writing it by the time they were in the studio, and most of it was written by all of them in the studio.
@@ExternusArmy it’s even funnier that none of them (except jimmy) even wanted to work on the song and were ready to be done recording but as the song came together they realized they had something special
@@mickdanger1434no, Matt was the actually the one who really pushed the band to work on and finish the song. You can hear either Brian or Zach saying the same in the breakdown video they have on their YT channel.
Even if you hate this band you have to respect this production. Masterpiece
if you hate this era of a7x you aren't a musician. i can understand hating new a7x (hell i do) but city of evil and the self titled were fucking OMG (chef's kiss). city of evil got me into heavy music (well that and static x as well as pantera's the great southern trendkill)
@@hughneutron5303 can i ask you what do you hate about last a7x? no hate, just pure confrontation
@@hughneutron5303 I'd say the only "new" a7x album that is arguably worthy of hate is HTTK. It was largely a safe, uninspired, let's-get-back-on-the-horse collection of songs, with the exception of a few of them, including This Means War and Acid Rain. Nightmare and The Stage are both remarkable albums, with very great songwriting.
@@iconamongidols as far as httk I get that. But I do like the song Hail to the king. The rest are meh. Shepherd of fire is ok. Never got into the rest
@@iconamongidols This Means War? That's literally just a Sad But True rip-off. Requiem, Planets and Shepherd Of Fire are much more enjoyable to me.
I was there that night, and there was something utterly magical in the air that night. We still miss you Jimmy - we will never get another song like this. ❤️
Taste of Chaos 2008 was a beast of a tour. I was at that show too at the Long Beach Arena. Atreyu, BFMV, and Blessthefall with A7X. Taste of Chaos needs to come back.
@@PrelectXBL oh man, wasn't that Crazy? BFMV was Amazing. I mean they all were, but god that was a hell of a tour. D'espairsRay and MUCC too, which I Never thought I'd get to see in the US.
Those in pain tend to tell the most amazing stories, I feel like his pain came through a lot in his writing. We were lucky to have had him in our lives as a musician. RIP Jimmy, the world misses you.
The Rev was a unique talent. RIP
They were never the same after he passed. He was the glue RIP
@@mmatthews90 epecially since he wrote pretty much all of the epics. (like this)
Ughh... here we go again
@@tyef572 what you have a problem with bands that have more talent then you? ;)
@@hughneutron5303 I don't have a band , I'm just tired of hearing about him. He did it to him self. No sympathy here. He was a good composer but an average drummer. Now if you wanna see a truly great composer and drummer , check out vlad from Jinjer.
Not surprised you hear Oingo Boingo in this piece since they had help from former members of this group for this track back when they recorded this
Syn Gates is just a beast on the guitar
I was never a huge fan of A7X but man The Rev could play.. Johnny Christ is also criminally underrated..
Omg finally some one thinks that to
they're all awesome. Synyster Gates can shred
JC is the leader of the Band actually.
Idk why but I always used to think that Synyster Gates wrote Johnny's bass parts. I'm still convinced Syn wrote the bass in the outro to Bat Country
This whole concert blows me away with how SOLID their performances are.
This band is in the larger than life category. They've had an impact on so many people. I don't listen to them on a regular basis anymore but I can always go back and listen and it hits me just as hard
This song was co-written by Steve Bartek, longtime collaborator of Danny Elfman’s and guitar player in Oingo Boingo. The A7X boys wanted to work with him to merge their sound with Boingo’s.
If I don't go wrong, Steve focused especially on wind instruments.
Man, i didn't know this, but it makes so much fucking sense now that i know lmao!
I don't think this is true. Jimmy 'The Rev' is the only one credited as writer of this song.
@@kabband(( co-written ))
Well, I won't say they did merge it in that way, but Rev and syn had a band with just an EP that came out named Pinkly Smooth that was a LOT more along those lines, great crazy shit. Rev actually was the lead vocalist for that while playing piano instead of drums, syn was still on guitar, but different stuff than you'd be used to from him. A lot more of that was clearly written by the Rev, and it brings a lot more attention to his style, and where this song came from. HIGHLY recommend anyone check them out, Pinkly Smooth. The names of the songs alone are wonky as hell, and they're so good.
They had the whole orchestra take part in this song. Absolute demonstration of Jimmy's mastermind. RIP
Regarding the members, the same members were together since like 2003 until the death of their drummer The Rev (who had the amazing backing/tradeoff vocals) in 2010. They had Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater fill in for the next album and then had another drummer for one album before their current drummer joined in 2016.
They are without a doubt one of the best live bands I've ever seen. M Shadows is INCREDIBLY consistent live too which is super uncommon in metal.
They had one or two bassist before Johnny but yeah it was the same since 2003
@@givenspade Syn also wasn’t in the band for sounding of the seventh trumpet.
I've seen them maybe 7 times since my first time in 09. ALL of them are that consistent its insane.
@@puppetmaster8551 yeah true he was just a session guitarist
@@givenspade ya he only played on to end the rapture, Zacky did all the other guitar work on the album.
I totally agree with you, took the words out of my mind. That's A7X Bohemian Rhapsody, at least by then. Super nice reaction brought me back to my very young years back in Cuba where I used to have that concert on repeat. Avenged is one of the bands that pulled me towards metal and in glad their sound evolved as much as it did to that point and beyond. Nice one geebz
Jimmy Sullivan was a legendary storyteller. There's a video of them in the studio recording it from start to finish and it's incredible.
Save me by sevenfold is my all time favorite song
The Rev really was one of those once-in-a-generation talents. Guy wrote whole songs by himself and then sang while drumming and twirling his sticks without a single mistake.
It's insane how The Rev could play without looking. Absolute Legend! R.I.P.
Funny I just rediscovered this track a few weeks ago and found out what it was about
Yesss!!! YEEEEEEESSSSS!!! Thank you for this Geebz 🖤
Please do the Rev's final swan song for Avenged Sevenfold - his magnum opus "Save Me".
Man it makes me feel good to see somebody having such a great reaction to this masterpiece of a song, and to the best live version too!!
You should watch the “Making of” for this song. It’s so cool! You’ll love it, mainly composed by the drummer
You gotta check out “Save Me” by these guys. The musicianship is just straight up incredible.
Thanks for the Oingo Boingo connection! That’s why I love your vids. I always learn something new
Seen them live numerous times and they never disappoint. This song is so fun, especially live.
istg i get literal goosebumps everytime i hear this performance damn the emotion is so good
Omg I can’t believe you did this one. I’m excited!
Edit: I almost choked when you said you were going to do Static X. My fave.
Absolutely awesome in concert
I generally just watch your videos and never comment, but I just had to say I'm glad you look so refreshed. It's great you took that break after all, which is funny because I also took a break from work and am starting to feel better too. Keep on rockin'!
How do I like a video multiple times
I'm so excited for this reaction
This is such a fun video to watch. You can see the genuine look of terrified, impressed, happy, confused, and confuzzeled look as the song progresses. Love your thoughts on the song as well because the whole thing is so whimsical for a heavy metal ballad lmao
I love the way you describe their music and the way you admire their talent I will be watching more of your videos 🙏🏼
Avenged was one of my favorite bands up through and including Nightmare. After that (also coincides to losing the Rev) they lost what drew me in. That said, still doesn't take away from how good of musicians they all are.
You can't really ever replace what the Rev brought to the table, but Brooks is an exceptionally great drummer and The Stage was a welcomed addition to their catalogue after the phoned in crap that was HTTK.
@@iconamongidols it's not Avenged Sevenfold, but it's also not crap.
I agree. I loved the Stage but mostly they lean to close to their influences now for me.
The stage is an awesome album and Brooks a fantastic drummer and writer. They lost their way with HTTK without the Rev but they bounced back with the stage, that album is a grower over time but there is some awesome shit on there and it unquestionably has the best drums for any A7X. They aren’t the same as they were with the Rev but they’re still A7X and a quality band.
This one particular live got me into the Avenged. Amazing one, all singing, that visual symetry of guitars... just wow. RIP Rev
oh wow this brings me back. This was my favourite song for the longest time! Times and interests change but there's no doubt is a solid banger. Missing The Rev. He was a goddamn BEAST.
I like how you decided to start doing live videos more often on the one I think we all would have wanted to see you do the music video for.
Live engineers are the silent heroes of live shows and it’s nice when bands really recognize them for their hard work.
Awesome video dude... All of the best wishes towards your channel
Glad to see you do this song, man. My best friend who is the polar opposite of me in music taste (she hates anything rock/metal), she absolutely loves this song.
It's so well written and a lot of fun 😎
it always amazes me how great they are live. I saw them in Dallas in 2014, I think it was, with Trivium and Korn. Absolutely amazing show
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it and would be shocked to find out what it was about later on - which I'm sure was the case for many people. 😅😅😅😅
M. Shadows is on record as saying that they intended to make a Halloween horror/joke album and that this song was written to go on that.
Eventually the album fell thru but they did so much great work on the song that they kept it and gave it to us anyway. It's a pretty gruesome topic but I can forgive them the content in light of the context.
Shoutout to the Rev who wrote this and many of their other songs. We love and miss you. You will be forever remembered. 🤘🤘🔥🔥
They have an unofficial/official tribute video to The Rev on their UA-cam page that's makes me cry every time I watch it. Would love to see just a straight reaction to that some time, Geebz.
Regardless, keep up the great work. Love your channel. 🤘🤘
One of my favorite songs by this band but all the way through out they are amazing. Rip rev
Rev's backing vocals just send me to sad ville everytime 😩
Facts.
I love this song and I'm glad you had such fun with it! I would love to hear your thoughts on Black Light Machine or Hyperventilate by Frost*!
I love this guys vibe
One of my favorites. Good selection
So much talent!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
Wow...1st time seeing this 🤯🤯🤘🤘unbelievable performance
They did release this concert as an album “Live in the LBC”. Second Heartbeat, after life, unholy confessions. You should just do each song from this concert lol. This concert is What turned me on the Avenged Sevenfold
Been waiting a year for you to do this banger.
This dude hits the nail on the head with every single assumption he makes it’s amazing.
It’s because he’s pretending not to know. He’s obviously done very thorough research, kudos to him.
I was at that show in the front row. Long Beach Coloseum.
Greatest show I've ever been to in my life.
Your reaction about the rev coming in I love it 🤣🤘🏾
You should watch the making of video where they show how they put this whole thing together! It was just amazing!
ua-cam.com/video/RTnO24cJEaQ/v-deo.html
Yeah. It's 80% Jimmy just screaming, drunk off his ass in the booth.
Absolutely love the call back screams from matt and then the rev on the last 'And againnnnn'. foREVer
Great to hear your digging into other creators! What a great song though to pick for a live performance! I would definitely watch the bands breakdown of this song on their UA-cam channel! For a live suggestion for Avenged you gotta do one of 'God Hates Us' from Rock am Ring 2011!
This is one of the most unique and best songs imo and a great live performance. I would highly recommend Save me, it’s a great song that’s about the death of their drummer the Rev.
I was lucky enough to go to the last "great" Ozzfest in 07 main stage was System of a Down and Disturbed as co headliners. Avenged Sevenfold opened the main stage.Bat Country just came out I instantly became a fan.
So glad you're reviewing more A7X. Exist by them is a MUST!
Love your videos dude
Freaking awesome song 😍
Love it Geebz! Yes, please check out “Exist” the full version please 😁
Little late to the party, don't know how I missed this one. They do a series on their own YT channel where they break down the recording and compositional choices they make for the album recordings. They've even done a video with Rick Beato who you mentioned at the end of yours. I'll never tire of hearing artists talk about their work and seeing the passion that they poured into it, definitely worth checking out.
i love how he caught that it was an Oingo Boingo kinda vibe, since a a member or two had involvment in the arrangements !!!
I have been waiting to see this one for A WHILE, thank you so much. Seeing your enjoyment and reactions to this song made me so happy. This song originally started out as an 8 min piano track created by the Drummer (rest in peace Jimmy foREVer) and if I remember correctly only one other band member along side the rev wanted to see the song come to fruition. If you enjoyed this song PLEASE check out Save Me or Exist, or MIA. They're all final tracks and are just musical masterpieces I think you'll really enjoy breaking down. As far as the band members everyone but the drummer and lead guitarist are the original members. Synyster gates was picked up after their original lead decided to go to college and that really paved the way for what the band would become. Thank you again so much for this, (if you can't tell A7X is my favorite band LOL) , this made my morning. Aloha!
Amazing reaction
When you mentioned Bohemian Rapsody the first A7X song that came to my mind was The Stage. I think you will really enjoy it.
That was way better than i thought it might have been because of the power of the cartoon version but super nice live. Love that about these reacts man!
Loved the analysis, I recommend watching the making of the song because of s couple things you highlighted are actually involved. I’d recommend it, making of a little piece of heaven
Live in lbc was their best performances for me . RIP The Rev 🙏
Gunslinger Live in the LBC is another great one. I honestly like the live version better than the studio
You will definitely enjoy The Stage. If this is their big closing song, the Stage is their intro song to their most recent shows since the album came out. Its a journey as well, its a more real message but with the musicianship and just pure ability/talent.
This is masterpiece
The rev is a genius for this but also thankful that Matt convinced everyone to finish the song 🎶
I can’t believe how great this sounds live. Figured this would be the one song that was unplayable in a concert of theirs. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
We love The Rev(Jimmy) Bestdrummer (R.i.P)🙏
F' Thailand 🇹🇭
R.I.P THE REV 🤟 This is one of my faves from A7X
Also, if you want to know more about his this was composed, there's a great behind the scenes mini documentary about it. It was the brainchild of the drummer, The Rev, and he had hands in every step of it's creation. He's one of my all time favourite musicians and it's such a shame he died so young.
Love your shoutout to the Punk Rock MBA! Love Finn and his show
One of the best live performances you could have picked. Good luck keeping the bar high now.
I would give any amount of money in the world to go back and attend this concert. Must’ve been fucking crazy man 🤯🤯
Oh snap! You did the song! Didn't think you would ever get to this one.
Definitely check out Save Me
A little Piece of Heaven was Rev’s masterpiece. Only he could of thought of a song like this. RIP REV.
Great song to restart. Keep rocking geebz. R.I.P The Rev the soul of the band.
I love the entire Live in the LBC, but the music video for this song is a must-watch.
I love this song. One of my favorite avenged sevenfold songs. It's crazy to think they were going to delete the song and just scrap it until the producers said no because this was going to be one of their biggest tracks. And now look almost 15 years later and it's still one of their greatest tunes
Totally need the video for your first time.
syn is so happy drunk, hilarious acts
My boy Finn Mckenty getting a shoutout! Love him and all his rock knowledge.
M. Shadows is still the lead singer, Yes.
Honestly I highly recommend watching the full live in the LBC video. That DVD made me a life long fan I thought they were great before that but after seeing them play it live...yeah.
M Shadows said that this song was never planned on being released but at the last minute the producer out it on and here we are
